3.75stars- RUNNING SCARED is the fourth instalment in DM Earl’s contemporary, adult RUNNING dark, MC romance series, set in the author’s Devil’s Handmaidens MC, and the multi authored Mayhem Makers. This is MC prospect Dani Smith, and Noah’s story line. RUNNING SCARED can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is an ongoing premise throughout.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there WILL BE triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from several first person perspectives including Dani, Noah, Dottie, Raven, RUNNING SCARED continues to focus on the take down of the group known as the Thunder Cloud Knuckle Brotherhood, a dangerous organization that may have joined with a religious cult using God and religion to justify their actions. Dani and Dottie, along with their brother Matty, and Dani’s love interest Noah were raised in the cult, having suffered through pain and torture but the cult continues to target our story line heroine, and with the aid of the Devil’s Handmaidens, Blue Sky Sanctuary, and the Grimm Wolves MC circle the proverbial wagons but predator is always one step ahead of its’ prey.
The world building is detailed, complex and gritty as the MCs and former US military veterans struggle to take down the people taking aim at our story line heroine. As Dani continues to heal, MC brothers and sisters will pay the price for protecting Dani, and the people she loves. Throughout the story and series, the author references several Mayhem Makers series authors, as well as dropping a surprise regarding the author themselves.
The relationship between Noah and Dani is slow to develop as Noah keeps his distance allowing Dani to heal. Their mutual attraction cannot be denied but Noah is afraid to approach the woman that calls to his heart. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.
There is another large ensemble cast of determined and dedicated secondary and supporting characters, all from the author’s interconnected MC series including Devil’s Handmaidens, Grimm Wolves MC, and Blue Sky Sanctuary.
RUNNING SCARED is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, obsession and madness, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is emotional and intense but I thought there was more telling than showing; the characters are desperate, dogged and purposeful; the romance is subtle and understated.
This is book 4 and final book in this spin off series Mayam Makers, and is Dani's books, the last of the prospects to get their story. But don't worry Ms Earl saved lots of healing, heartbreak, secrets, angst and danger for this book too.
Dani finds herself once again in recovery from trauma at the hands of her father, the elders and Samson. Seriously, how much should a girl have to go through. This just helps us to understand some of the why's behind what the Devil's Handmaker's do and why these strong as stone ladies are so passionate about the cause. But Dani is sensing that everyone is keeping secrets from her, she might be the quiet one but she is not soft and breakable. She is struggling a bit with the return to her life that Noah has brought but she misses what they once had and is being cautious.
Being part of the same community that Dani & Dottie grew up in he knows first hand what the women from their have incurred. But working his life to be something so different than his example of men. This is hard he often finds himself guilty without cause. Working hard with Matty to take down their fathers and the horrible things they do. Given a chance to reconnect with Dani is something he has only dreamed and now that it is a reality, he is willing to do everything he can.
For series followers this book gives us a look into all our prospects and how things are going in the club, while they work to keep everyone safe once again from the Brotherhood that is determined to take them down. Bringing our friends from the Intruders and Blue Sky Sanctuary. Though the series is over we will might still see these characters in some of the other series. Fingers Crossed.

Running Scared, featuring Noah and Dani's story, is the conclusion to the MMM series. We thoroughly enjoyed this emotional and moving story, with themes of healing, growth, betrayal, and romance.
Dani's journey from a traumatic past to finding hope and love with Noah was heartwarming and suspenseful. Our hearts went out to Dani for the hardships she endured growing up and during her kidnapping. As she heals, tensions with her twin sister Dottie reach a breaking point. The complex bond between twins is portrayed realistically, especially given the trauma they experienced together.
The characters in this story provide moments of lightness amidst the intense themes of human trafficking, cults, and the aftermath of trauma. Avalanche, a beloved character, continues to capture our hearts with his capacity for love.
Noah and Dani's relationship, rooted in a shared past, offers a second chance at love. Their connection is deep, despite the challenges they and the club's troubles linger, justice seems inevitable in the end.
Their connection is palpable, and their journey together is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The conclusion of the story leaves the reader with a sense of hope and closure, as Noah and Dani face their pasts and look towards a brighter future together. Despite the challenges they may still face, justice and love prevail.
What initially drew me to this book was the premise of a female biker club. Unfortunately, while the concept sounds refreshingly different, the story doesn't make as much use of it as I had hoped. The women have their own bikes and are technically members of the club, but much of the action and decision-making ends up centered around the male love interests. One of the female bikers is involved in intelligence gathering and contributes in meaningful ways, but overall the story still feels surprisingly male-focused. The plot is largely driven by the merging of two biker clubs and the resulting romantic pairings. While that can make for an enjoyable romance, it also felt like a missed opportunity. A female biker club offers the potential for unique dynamics, leadership struggles, and adventures from the women's perspective, but those elements never take center stage. That said, the book is still an entertaining read if you're looking for a biker romance. I just found myself wishing it leaned more heavily into the female club aspect that originally made the premise stand out. Overall, this was a decent romance with an interesting foundation, but one that didn't fully capitalize on what made its concept unique.

This series just keeps getting better and better. This is Dani's story and follows on from her twin sister Dottie's book. Recovering from what happened to her at the hands of her father, the Elders and Samson, Dani and Noah start to rekindle the possibility of a friendship and relationship, something Noah has wanted since they grew up together, despite their damaged pasts. Frustrated by the knowledge that people are keeping things from her, including her sister, Dani needs a quiet place to deal with everything going on in her head. While having to deal with the change in relationship and dynamics with her twin sister Dottie and the discovery that Samson is sending threats in his determination to punish her, Dani is pushed to the edge, but with Noah, her brother and her Club family standing by her side, Dani will need to decide what she wants for her future, despite the dangers. Fast-paced, action-packed with lots of drama, some angst, great characters and storyline, this is a page turner that grabs you from the very first page right through to the end. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
This story leans into dark, emotionally charged romance, pairing Dani (a traumatised heroine) with Noah (a brooding hero seeking) redemption against a backdrop of danger and secrecy. The tension builds through a mix of internal conflict and external threats, with trust and vulnerability at the centre of their evolving relationship. It embraces familiar themes of healing, protection, and forbidden closeness, while the gritty world of bikers, mobsters, and hidden agendas adds intensity and intrigue. Overall, it’s a moody, suspenseful read that will appeal to fans of darker romance with wounded characters, high stakes, and a strong emotional undercurrent.

This is the fourth book in the Running Series which is a spinoff of the Devil's Handmaidens MC and includes a lot of the same characters and their ongoing battle with traffickers. Dani, still reeling in the aftermath of her kidnapping and torture, feels that the MC, including her twin sister, see her as soft and weak. When once again she is targeted, there are only a few people she feels that she can trust. She asks Noah to take her away and her brother Matthew comes with them, but trouble follows. Despite everything, the injuries to those around her, a falling out with her twin, and a deepening connection to Noah, there is a bit of humor. Eventually, Noah and Dani get their HEA or maybe HFN ending.

Running Scared is part of The Mayhem Makers Series written by the talented author D.M. Earl. These standalone novels are brought to you by several bestselling authors specializing in writing twisted chaos. This was everything I hoped for and more. This is Noah and Dani's story. I love this book, the plot is so unique, I read it in one day, could not put it down.
Be mindful of your trigger warnings entering this book, although like always the author handles distressing content with dignity and grace. So much happens within the pages yet I still finished reading with a couple of big questions. That didn't stop it from being an captivating read though. If you're new to this author I would recommend reading Running Free first as I needed a refresher on a few key details/characters. I hope this isn't the last we see of this family, both blood and chosen.
Dani is a phenomenal heroine she’s heartbreakingly vulnerable after surviving absolute hell, yet so incredibly resilient. You feel every ounce of her fear, trauma, and desperation for peace. Noah is the ultimate protective hero. Fighting his own demons, he becomes her perfect safe haven. Their chemistry is top-tier, packed with pure slow-burn desire, fury, and genuine heartache.
It’s a brilliant, high-stakes romantic suspense that hooks you from the start.
This story tied up some things. A lot of healing took place as well as love, and I had moments where I was so touched. Dani had so much to work through, and Noah tried to be patient but still express how he felt. There was plenty of action, danger, and we almost lost people. I loved the fact that Dani and Noah did not rush into the bed, like Dottie and Halo. They worked at getting over their past which was still following them. This was worth the read.
I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.
'Trusting Noah with my safety is easy, Trusting Noah with my heart terrifies me. Can I open myself to a future with him without Running Scared?'
The characters were very complex and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. All in all a great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.

Running Scared is Mayhem Makers Devil's Handmaidens MC spinoff book 4 and is a fantastic, fast-paced journey. It's not surprise that I love the Devil's Handmaidens. They're a great group of fierce women who take us on unforgettable journeys. This is just what this book is, an unforgettable journey. It's a tragic, emotional, second chance journey all about healing, hope and like a phoenix, rising above the trauma of the past. An absolutely consuming journey.

Another amazing read by DM Earl! I was captured from the beginning and couldn't put the book down. There is so much emotion on these pages. The love. The hurt. The unfortunate abuse these poor souls suffered through. The healing. So much! Noah and Dani have a long history but they still have secrets. Will their growing feelings survive the harsh reality of the past? Will they find the healing they need together. Such an amazing book! One click and read ...with tissues nearby!
I kind of forgot what happened during Dotti's story so might have helped me if I had reread it first. Dani and Noah's story is a good one. There is a lot Dani has to work through and Noah was patient. Their relationship was allowed to grow rather than be all go right from the beginning.
As always, DM Earl is mentioned as the mysterious writer writing about them. We learn part of the secret but the rest is still remaining to be found out!
This compelling story had me connecting with Dani and Noah. She is a woman haunted by her past and he is a man seeking redemption. When threats both internal and external arise Dani, there is only one person Dani can trust Noah. Their story is heartfelt and had me drawn to their journey of healing.

Dani has a past that has followed her to the MC. She is learning the navigate a relationship that is best for her. Noah knows the past that Dani tries to hide. Because at one time he was part of it. I loved the storyline of the book. I love the characters and the roles they play throughout the book. 5 stars I hope this ain't the ending to this series.
This group has all kinds of personalities. Big, scary, small and scared. Together they balance themselves out to be the team needed to do the work and bring survivors to the other side of their journey!!! I can't wait for more!!!
There was action, danger and healing from the trauma that life threw at you in this book. Loved how much care and support Noah showed to Dani. Some questions were finally answered. What happens next? Received a free copy.
Running Scared pulled at my heartstrings as Dani reminds me of my daughter Dani-typically underestimated but a mighty warrior! I love that DM Earl intertwines characters from other series!
Running Scared: Mayhem Markers(Running Series) by D.M. Earl was absolutely amazing. I adore this series. The characters were real. They touched my heart. I cried and shouted for everything they went through. You will be moved by this story. Thank you for your awesome stories.
