Thank you so much to the author for allowing me an ARC of this book; I truly appreciated getting to read it prepublication!

Scorched had a compelling premise and a classic fantasy atmosphere that made it easy to settle into. While the story started a little slowly, it became increasingly engaging as it progressed, and by the end, I found myself genuinely invested in both the world and its characters.

One of the novel’s strongest elements was its character dynamics. The cast was highly likable overall, and several characters stood out in particular. Ferrion was an especially welcome addition, bringing humor and an approachable charm that balanced the story nicely. I also appreciated the depth given to Valen. His loyalty was unwavering, but it never felt one-dimensional or generic. The memory aspect was another highlight. It added an interesting layer to the story and helped set the book apart.

That said, there were a few areas that pulled me out of the experience at times. The prose occasionally felt overly descriptive, with long lists of details and awkward phrasing that slowed the pacing more than necessary. I also found myself wanting a bit more from Scorch as a protagonist early on, as her personality initially felt somewhat muted. However, the later reveal that her devotion to the king was influenced by magic served as a strong explanation for that characterization and reframed much of her earlier behavior in an interesting way. While I still would have liked to see a bit more personal growth and individuality from her, she does develop over the course of the novel, which made her arc satisfying overall.

Even with those critiques, Scorched was an enjoyable read with a cool concept, memorable supporting characters, and enough intrigue to keep me turning the pages. I’d be interested to see how the characters, especially Scorch, continue to evolve moving forward.

I also respected the sincerity of the acknowledgments, particularly the author’s decision to begin by thanking God, as not many authors have the courage to do so.

I received a free ARC of this book and have written my honest review below.

Scorched follows our FMC, a young woman whose memories are locked behind a mental barrier. She loyally serves her king as his executioner/interrogator/investigator. After the capture of the enemy king, she finds herself facing a mystery she struggles to unravel as she rediscovers her identity. I give it 3.25 stars.

Likes:
I was intrigued by the runic magic system and how it interplayed with memories/their minds. The side characters were endearing, and I appreciated how competent they all seemed to be—especially Ferrion. I'm intrigued to see what exactly he's hiding and why. By the end of the book, I was excited to see what came next, and was disappointed to realise this wasn't a standalone (meaning I'd have to wait for answers) when it ended on a cliffhanger (lol 🤭). I thought the soul bond was a really intriguing aspect of the romance, and I'm excited to see how else it plays a role in the story.

Dislikes:
The book felt overexplained. The plot twists were heavy-handed and obvious from a mile away (yet the FMC couldn't see them until they were flashing in her face, and even then it felt like she was intentionally obtuse). Several transitions felt repetitive, being described in detail through to the end of the book (after the first time she got ready, I skimmed each following step-by-step description). There was also a scene at the beginning of the book that went through and dropped everyone's names and roles in quick succession, and because I had no frame of reference for the characters, I quickly forgot who they were and why they were important.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to someone wanting a gentler romance with an approachable magic system.

I received this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First let me say that I started reading this book on bed this morning and had finished it by lunchtime.

Initially I felt like I needed more description of Scorch I struggled to picture her as a character and I really like a good character description and because I didn't have this with the FMC I found it I referred with my getting sucked in as quickly as I could've been.

This ceased to matter so much once the frustration as Scotch's situation kicked in. Now I won't say too much because I'm not one for spoilers but I will say having memory loss and being under the thumb of such a manipulative and controlling ruler was deeply, deeply frustrating. And then the inability to put two and two together added to that frustration.

However, for all my criticisms, I really enjoyed this book. I loved the devotion of other characters to the FMC and their willingness to endanger themselves to help her - their patience and in some cases teasing really made them quite lovable I found the world building really interesting and look forward to finding out more about it. I thought the plague was a wonderfully clever additional layer to the villain's ability to control Scorch and his other subjects. THE plot absolutely drew me in and kept me reading because I really needed to see Scorch finally connect the dots. And I also kind of enjoyed the feeling of constant frustration right up to the end which I'm assuming will lead quite nicely to another book and to this story continuing. I'm totally here for another book!

I received Scorched by Kaylyn Pak as an ARC read!
I took my time reading this book.
I wanted to savor it. This new world and magic system and i loved it!!

Scorched is the executioner, investigator and interrogator for King Silas
She only remember the last 3 years of her life.
She is loyal to the King because he helped her use her powers and cares for her, but is not until the Purist King becomes the prisoner that she has to interrogate that she starts remembering her life and everything she believed starts to crumble.
Wanting to stay loyal to the King and prove him that she has control over her mind. Scorched tries to figure out what is causing the plague while doing her others duties to keep the King happy.
But while she interrogates the Purist King more memories start to come back to her of her previous life and it seems she knew very well the Purist King.

The King has done a number of her! She doesn’t trust her own mind. While investigating a plague that is taking over civilians she rely in unexpected allies that sense to know her story but aren’t able to speak freely of it because of the King. Scorched try so hard to uncover the truth about the plague and the Purist King but its surprise by what her memories discovered.

I’m grateful I had the opportunity to read and review Scorched! I loved it and I can’t wait for book 2
Looking forward for more world building and character development in the next book.

THIS IS A DEBUT?! i’m floored. If you are a “Assassins Blade Third” and Alchemised Part 1 fan…. i fear this needs to be on your TBR and read on release day.
-
The entire time reading this was like carrot dangling on a string for a dog on a treadmill… does that make sense? Subtle hints throughout the book from dialogue with other characters who know what’s going on but you FMC does not ~memory loss~ (underrated in my opinion but i’m glad it is not overdone because when it is done well it is so tasty).
-
You follow a King’s executioner who lost all memory of herself from before she was “scorched”. Meaning she overused her power and was left with physical and internal repercussions. WHICH I LOVE because how many times has someone with power “gotten the bottom of their power” and nothing happens. Pak put meaning into every little thing.
-
The love story is this was lovely as well. Reminds me a lot of Kaan from When the Moon Hatched. He never pushes her too far or reveals anything, letting her find out for herself.
-
I really am in awe that this is Kaylyn’s debut. Mark my words, she is going to be HUGE. Such a beautiful mind, I loved this story so much.
-
Also that ending? Please. I love a cliff hanger honestly. Make me rush to the bookstore on release day so I know what is going to happen next. And i’m hoping we get a prequel novella of some time before this as well.

Thank you to Kaylyn Pak for reaching out to me to read this book as an arc. I genuinely am so grateful since I ended up loving it.

Starting off, the female main character, Scorch, works as an executioner for the “evil” king. Her power is very unique since she can control golden strands and also enter others mind with them or hold them. She’s heavily manipulated by him and lost all of her memory. She was also scorched because she used to much power.

Then there’s this other king who’s supposed to be the worst but actually turns out to be the most caring and lovely man there is. Well he’s imprisoned and Scorch must interrogate him. But guess what? He already knows her. Shocker right hihi. Turns out he came there and let himself be captured to get her back.

Well if we’re already taking about the Purist King, let me just say I’m OBSESSED. His quotes are everything to me. And the way he treats Scorch? Goddamn.

To the evil king I can just say that I absolutely despise him for everything that he did.

Overall I really liked the plot, the world building and the characters. Since this is a debut novel I’m actually shocked it’s written that well.

The only thing that didn’t really vibe with me was how clueless Scorch was at some points even though it is really understandable with how manipulated and torn her mind is.

I’m really excited to see how this processes in book 2.

*first off, thank you ms kaylyn for the chance to read the ARC!! this was my first ARC opportunity and safe to say i will be itching for more*

from the first page through the acknowledgements, this book captivated my interest and kept me wanting more with each page turn. Scorch (my scorched one, scorched, executioner, etc) is the king’s right hand, handling all the dirty business he deals with in his kingdom. she does so not always with class but definitely a perceived grace. her relationship with the king angered me at times, as did some of her actions but as a stubborn girl and one who was told she was “saved and would be nothing without him (the king)” i can’t fully blame the girl. her character buildup, as well as Silas’s (the king) and Valen’s as well, kept me turning pages. the sort of slow burn romance between valen and scorch has me ITCHING FOR MORE (please kaylyn i need this)

my few points that had me stopping and having to re-read were the excessive descriptions at some points, and the slow build to the beginning. but everything played out very very nicely in the end and i can not wait for book 2!!

thank you again for this advanced copy! looking forward to its official release xx

3.5 rounded up to 4 for the app.

"Hes a prisoner and I'm the executioner.
How could this not end in tragedy? "

Loved the idea for this book and give me a yearning man any day of the week!

A story about a kings executioner (Scorch) with no memories from before and a prisoner who has been captured and in a cell to be interigated.
This story is one that keeps you reading so you can piece together the memories and the mysteries between the prisoner and executioner.

Some absolutely swoon worthy quotes too...
"I have trouble thinking of anything but you. Youve consumed me. Every sound- I hope its you. I watch the stairs, waiting..for you to come to me, to question me, to undo me with your touch"

I did enjoy reading it and what a way to end the book!!! What a cliffhanger... iykyk. However sometimes the writing did feel a bit basic and some things were being repeated. At first I thought it was intentional with Scorches thoughts and that it might change as she gained more memories and control etc but it didnt. So unfortunately thats why its below 4 stars. I did enjoy it though! And excited to find out what happens next.

Thank you to the author for letting me be an early reader for your debut novel. I massively appreciate it and am very grateful for the opportunity.

I was very blessed to be given an ARC of Pak’s debut novel! Did I consume this book or did it consume me? I finished it within 3 days DURING FINALS WEEK?!?!

I loved the character’s pov we follow throughout the book and it was fun to learn things as she did. I also enjoyed how you were immediately dropped into the story and world building happened along the way. That being said, I would’ve liked a little bit more detail on the actual kingdoms and the idea of some people displaying power and some people not.

I also really loved that there were clear twists that kept me involved in the story, but also surprises that left me shocked.

The only thing that bothered me sometimes was the amount of repetitive details (i.e. what someone was wearing, what daily tasks were, etc.) but it never really took me out of the story.

I really found this to be a truly impressive debut! I am definitely looking forward to reading the sequel and seeing what’s next for these characters (maybe a dual pov in future books?👀)

Thank you so much to the author for an advanced copy of this book!

Scorch is the King’s executioner. She’s under his control. What he says goes, and she remembers nothing beyond the past 3 years. She has golden powers.. and meets the Dark Prince who’s imprisoned in the dungeon and she’s tasked to interrogate him.

I loved the descriptions in this book, the world building and loved all the characters and their little developments and interactions. You could say I was a LITTLEEEEE frustrated with Scorch at times, the way she acted and things she did after having warnings not to do so… and with the little hints dropped here and there throughout did figure out early on who she ‘really was’ which I kinda hoped would be a big OMG moment towards the end.

The abrupt end kinda got me too, but it really made me excited to eventually read book 2 when it comes out🥰

Again thanks so much for this ARC✨

I will preface this review with not being a big fantasy reader, so take my opinions lightly. This was a fantasy book through and through we hit all the major fantasy tropes that you expect. I think the writing was good, but there was times I feel that simple or unimportant events were overly explained and detailed which frustrates me on occasion. The FMC seemingly being unable to piece together the pretty obvious hints being given to her was another point of contention that made me a bit crazy (but I feel that this is common in fantasy writing). I think the characters and plot are interesting and well developed throughout the story with each being distinct and intriguing in their own right. There is some romantic tension but as is mentioned this book has no spice at all so don’t crack it open hoping for spice. It also finishes on a cliffhanger

I couldn’t put it down! I received Scorched by Kaylyn Pak as an ARC yesterday. I finished it today. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Written in first person, you meet Scorch, the king’s executioner. Her face was ruined three years ago when she overextended her magic and it backfired, “scorching” her. She was saved by the king who nursed her back to health and now cares for her, despite her disfigurement. She has no memories of her life before being saved by the king.

She isn’t just the king’s executioner; she’s also one of his investigators. A plague of corruption has been destroying those who possess magic. She has been tasked with finding the cause of the infection. How is it passed from person to person? Will there ever be a cure?

This is an engaging story with a unique magic system, clean romance and mystery. A must read for anyone who loves fantasy romance!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author.

I enjoyed Scorched overall! For a debut novel, it had a lot of interesting ideas and mystery woven throughout, from the FMC’s lost memories, to the prisoner, the plague, and the weird touchy king (the one Scorch serves who gave me the ick).

It did take me a little while to fully settle into this new world, but I found myself curious and wanting answers. Even though some parts were predictable (the book was marketed as ToG x Alchemised inspired so I clocked all the clues right away!), I had a good time with it and finished the book in one day!

Book 1 ended in a cliffhanger!!! I’m definitely excited to see where book two goes!

If you're looking for a straightforward, closed-door Romantasy read, consider Scorched!

And.. Congratulations on your debut Romantasy novel, Kaylyn Pak!

Thank you to the author for an eARC of this novel prior to its release!
This book was very well developed for a debut novel! I loved the complexity of the characters, and there was a very interesting magic system I loved reading about! I also love books that have a “mind block” that the main character eventually frees herself from and slowly gives more answers as the plot thickens.
The only reason this is 3 stars instead of four is because of the pacing. It felt so slow to me, especially the romance. The yearning gets to be a lot after pages and pages of not understanding why, and I just wish it would have been a bit earlier in the plot for the FMC and the MMC to figure things out.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book, and am very interested to see where the author takes the story in the sequel!

I really wanted to like this book. I was really honoured to get my first ARC. The tropes and blurb really hit many of my checks.
It started strong with a dark and powerful FMC, lots of secrets and intrigues. The MMC felt at first like a warm blanket, his devotion and love endless.
But in the second half the story-telling style was too difficult for me to follow.
There were lots of too detailed descriptions, repetitive romantic scenes and similar actions. Scenes where she visited someone ended too abruptly and felt a bit artificial. FMC was strong in the first chapters and then rapidly turned into a scared child (but she had so much potential!) The plot twists were nice but over explained.
The story has potential and the world and magic system are interesting. I wish the author all the best with the second book! Trust in your characters and let them be harsher on their stances.

I just want to say thank you to the author for sending me the ARC of this book!

Scorch is King Silas's executioner, investigator, and interrogator. She only remembers the last 3 years of her life after the king saved her life after she overused her powers and scorched herself. When King Silas brings in the Dark Prince, Scorch is tasked with interrogating him. As she starts questioning him she slowly starts getting her memories back. All the while she has to figure out what's causing the plague to all the magic users in the village.

It does start off kinda slow, but I quite enjoyed this book, I finished this book in 3 or 4 days and it usually takes me MONTHS to finish a book. I couldn't put it down.

No spice

I really enjoyed this book and honestly didn’t want to put it down… but, ya know, mom life 😂

This story kept me constantly guessing and coming up with theories about what was really going on and what might happen next. I loved unraveling the mystery alongside Scorch and trying to piece everything together.

While this is a romantasy without spice, I genuinely didn’t miss it. There was so much happening that the story completely carried itself.

That ending though… total cliffhanger 😭😂 I need book 2 ASAP. I felt frustrated, sad, and angry right alongside Scorch as she uncovered pieces of the truth and struggled to make sense of everything happening around her. I cannot wait to see where the story goes next.

I was fortunate enough to read as a BETA and then again as an ARC and this book...ahhhhh!!!
Im not gonna lie, I LOVE spicy shit haha, but something told me to try something new and I did and I was NOT disappointed. While there is no spice in this book, there is so much more!
Finding her memories.
Figuring out who she can trust.
Figuring out who she is.
The way the prisoner pulled on your heart strings.
The King who was always "protecting" her.
The ruins.
The side characters.
The way you question what's going to happen next, or what something means while you're reading.

Kaylyn's debut novel and it was amazing! I cannot wait for book 2!

I went into this as an ARC thinking I knew what I was getting… I did not realize I was signing up for a clean romance at 462 pages 😅

The concept? Really good. The story had potential and the ending actually delivered in a satisfying way. But getting there felt long. Like… “checking my percentage every 10 minutes” long.

For me, this would have hit so much harder with tighter pacing. Clean romance can absolutely work but at this length, I needed more tension, more payoff, or something to keep that momentum going.

That said, if you love a slow, gentle build and prefer closed-door romance, this might be your vibe. As for me… I will definitely be double-checking future ARCs before I commit 😂

Thank you to Kaylyn for an ARC!

Wow! This was an incredible debut romantasy! The world building, character development, and plot were done immaculately well. Scorch was an intelligent, powerful, brave, and resilient FMC despite lacking all memories of her past. The Dark Prince was a loyal and devoted MMC. The way he cared for Scorch and was patient with her was endearing. Once her lost memories started to resurface and their connection started to be revealed, the depth of their past bond that had become estranged was a heartbreaking revelation. The cliffhanger this one left off with is brutal and I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!

Scorched is a dark fantasy novel that immediately immerses readers in a brutal, politically charged kingdom where power, loyalty, and fear are tightly intertwined. From the opening execution scene, the story establishes a tense atmosphere full of suspicion, violence, and hidden agendas. Kaylyn Pak creates a kingdom that feels richly gothic and emotionally heavy, full of darksteel halls, shadowed politics, elaborate royal traditions, and a constant sense of danger. The writing style leans heavily into dramatic imagery and emotional intensity. Readers who enjoy immersive fantasy prose and morally gray characters will probably love it.
It is definitely a re-reader.

This debut novel by Indie Author Kaylyn Pak is absolutely wonderful! I am so grateful that I was able to read this as an ARC. The only downside is that this book hasn't come out yet and I already need the next book! The world the author is creating is different from what I've been reading lately and I am loving it! We're seeing magic connected more to runes which I am here for. I also love how badass our FMC is! Scorch is so strong and even though I was yelling at her some times I am excited to see what the author does with her world.

Scorched by Kaylyn Pak was such a solid fantasy read for me! I gave it a 3.75/5 ⭐️🔥 The world building and tension kept me locked in, and I loved all the secrets, betrayal, and morally gray vibes throughout the story 👀 There were definitely moments where I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I needed answers ASAP.

Some parts did feel a little slower than I wanted, and I wish I connected to a few characters a bit more emotionally, but overall the plot twists and intrigue kept me invested! If you love hidden pasts, power struggles, and fantasy with dramaaaa… this one might be for you too 📚✨

This book was spectacular.. So many times I wanted to jump right in and help the characters out. Spent so much time yelling for Scorch to figure out what was going on. I finished it 3 days ago and I find myself thinking about it and wanting to read more only to realize yet again that I am done reading it. The twist and turns in this plot had me guessing the whole time. The more characters that were introduced the more uncertain who the good guys were. Thank you so much Kaylyn Pak for the opportunity to be an ARC readers for this book.

From start to finish, Kaylyn really puts us into the world she built. I love the POV from the main character, Scorch, an executioner for the King, who she serves loyally and faithfully until she starts to unravel her past after meeting the Dark King. As their relationship grows, she learns of the past that she has forgotten and starts to question where her loyalties lie.

The world building and character development are top notch and I can’t wait to see what the sequel brings!

Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this phenomenal story!

The world building and writing style are amazing! I cannot believe this is a debut novel. It is so impressively done. I enjoyed the setting and the magic system. This is definitely not an epic style fantasy that spends 100 pages hashing that out, but the author sprinkled enough in here and there to make it interesting. I enjoyed the premise of the plot as well. I thought it, as well as the characters were very unique. It isn’t like anything I’ve read recently. However, the plot was extremely predictable. Within the first two chapters, I had already figured out the main plot points and upcoming twists in the book. It did end on a cliffhanger though, and I am intrigued with how the story will continue.

ARC Review - omg what did you do!!!

This book keeps you hooked from page one, one of my fave and underrepresented troupes is forgotten memories and this books shows that in such an brilliant way.

We have a badass FMC with deadly powers, MMC who is her prisoner, a questionable king and cryptic side characters.

There is a plague, mystery, layered characters, a strong but manipulated FMC and a juicy cliffhanger that leaves your jaw on the floor, can we have book 2 now please?
