This was a great World. Charlie is such wonderful character. She loves het sister so much. She makes a deal with the Devil to save her sister. She finds more then she expected.

This was enjoyable and not as predictable as some books of this genre are.

Firstly I loved the bath scene with Ronin. I laughed so much.

Secondly we didn’t have a fmc who is quick to give into her feelings no matter how attracted she finds the males, her first intimacy is under the influence of a spell, a demon who thinks everyone is his servant, a vampire who isn’t exactly a nice guy and an obnoxious fae. Love it.

The jury’s still out if I will finish this or not. Although I’m sure it eventually will be revealed, I’m irritated that the reason for Dora’s abduction hasn’t been given. Also, the expression, “I’d sell my soul” is pretty common so why does Satan immediately pop up when Charlie utters it?* It seems he’s been standing in the wings waiting. He’s too smarmy for me but hey, he’s the devil so why should I like him at all?

Charlie is disguised as a demon so she can infiltrate Hell’s Abaddon Academy where Dora has been taken. Satan has gone out of his way to humiliate her with the demonic form she is given as well as her wardrobe.

Charlie is more than out of her element dealing with magical beings but Satan did assign a knowledgeable snake to help her navigate without blowing her cover. (Snake supposedly blinks at times but snakes don’t have eyelids)

Various events cause Charlie to become the talk of the Academy, but not in a good way. She eventually manages to win over one creature although I’m pretty sure all four of her future lovers have been introduced. (werewolf, vampire, fae and demon)

This wraps up on a pretty surprising cliffhanger.

*Both reasons are eventually disclosed near the end.

Maybe 3.5 stars is more accurate because it really picked up at the end, and I’m definitely curious enough to see where the next book goes.

However, I felt like the first half to three-quarters of the book dragged a little bit. The parts I wanted her to lean into and give me more depth, maybe more time with the guys or her to do more searching on her own, I felt were developed enough, and the parts where the snake (who is so sassy and I love, btw) was sneaking and giving her all the intel, but felt very info-dumpy and heavy were not spaced out enough and carried the bulk of the story. I suppose I wanted there to be more stakes for her as a female human in this world, or for her to have more connection and time for with the guys besides just the one, but I suppose there’s more books and time for that later. That said, that’s definitely what affected my rating and overall enjoyment of the book.

Honestly, this book was surprisingly really good! It wasn’t super long, but it completely held my attention. The plot was solid, and I really liked the main character—Charlotte. Living a normal human life and just thrown into this wild, crazy situation, and her reactions felt real. I hate when a character just blindly accepts everything, but here, she questioned things, and I was right there with her. I’m definitely going to pick up the second book—can’t wait, even with that cliffhanger!

Ruby Vincent is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors in this genre and this is another example why - great humour, mystery and interesting world building combined with relatively complex characters where you’re often guessing their true motives.
