Wonderful traditional regency! It has a great atmosphere, I felt immeadiately immersed in the book. The setting is an old, scary looking scottish castle, but this isn't really a gothic tale. It's a mix of romance and Agatha Christie type mystery. Usually I don't like the mix, I prefer plain regency romance, but here it worked perfectly. You get more a sense of coziness, than one of danger.
Also, I usually don't like first person POV, where the main character tells the story, but the author is such a good writer that it actually adds to the charm of the book.

I have to agree with the other reviewer. I dislike first person narrative but, Ms. Hazard created such a great heroine and an interesting story, that I was completely enamored of it. Lila Douglas is too tall, too plain, and all of 24 years of age. She's travelling to her great-aunt's home in order to discover who the old lady will name as her heir. Lila's brother as well as four other cousins (and a cousin-in-law) are also there on the same errand. Unfortunately, it looks like someone is trying to kill the possible heirs, and most of the book revolves around this mystery.

Lila is my type of heroine: older, sensible and tall (the last one is just an extra delight). Even though she believes herself in love with her fashionable cousin Alastair, she does not act like a ninnyhammer. She also soon starts seeing him for who he is. Prior to this event, she had only met him briefly. One of the reasons I dislike first person narratives is that the heroine is usually full of self-pity and constantly doubting the hero with a woe is me attitude. There's none of this here. Not to say that Lila is always sure of herself, but she's a rational being and able to analyze her feelings as well as the feelings of others.

The hero is just my type. Tall, serious, and brooding but also loyal, strong and passionate. Seeing him through Lila's eyes, and knowing how she was hurting him, I just wanted to give him a big hug. That said, I actually understood a lot of Lila's actions and have to say I'd probably would have reacted the same way. The other characters were an assortment of stereotypes, but it was still enjoyable to read about them and their antics. I'm not sure if this is a true 5-star book (definitely 4), but I enjoyed it tremendously and that hasn't happened much lately, so I'm going to be generous. This is a clean romance and highly recommended.
