More than Words: Velvet Shadows

Rate this book
Kate Martin does not do spontaneous.

She color-codes her calendar, creates multi-tabbed, cross-referenced spreadsheets to plan her dinner menu, and once made a PowerPoint to decide between two shades of beige. But after a brutal breakup leaves her questioning everything, Kate decides it’s time to shake things up by accepting a job offer as the personal assistant to rock’s biggest heartthrob. For Kate, control is comfort, predictability is peace, and falling for a rockstar—particularly one who has a habit of forgetting things like names, birthdays, and, occasionally, pants—was never part of the plan.

On the outside, Josh Calloway has it all. On the inside, he’s falling apart.

Frontman for the chart-topping band Velvet Shadows, Josh is confident, charming, and used to living fast and loud. He’s always used humor to hide his flaws, but lately, the spiraling self-doubt is getting harder to ignore. Enter Kate—the quiet, capable assistant who calms his chaos with color-coded precision. She wasn’t supposed to matter. Now she’s the only thing that does.

She’s organized. He’s impulsive. She plans her days down to the minute. He can barely remember what day it is. On paper, they don’t add up. But sometimes love shows up exactly when—and how—you least expect it.

More Than Words by Lexie Black, performed in duet by Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap, with special guests Samantha Brentmoor and James Cassidy, produced by High Gravity Productions

Are you kidding me??
I absolutely adored this story and already want to reread it.
This was swoony, funny, and just pure perfection. This is how you write and narrate a rom-com.
I finished this in less than 24 hours, that’s how much I loved it. The FMC and MMC were perfect for each other, and I really appreciated the mental health representation, Josh with his ADHD and Kate with her past trauma.

🎧 The narration was SO damn good. My gosh. Andi Eloise is one of my favorite female narrators, and she was an absolute masterclass here. And Ryan Lee Dunlap as Josh?? Perfect. He nailed that goofy, spiraling energy while still bringing the heat in those more intense moments.

I need more of these characters and definitely more from this narration duo, please and thank you.
If you want to swoon, laugh, listen with a smile on your face, and then get a little hot and bothered the next minute… you need this audio.

ALC Review: More Than Words by Lexie Black
Narrated by Andi Eloise & Ryan Lee Dunlap
Thank you to Lexie Black and High Gravity Productions for the ALC

Andi Eloise made Kate’s anxiety, control issues, and quiet vulnerability feel so authentic. Then Ryan Lee Dunlap came in with Josh’s chaotic rockstar energy and absolutely wrecked me. He balanced charm, humor, and heartbreak so well that every crack in Josh’s confidence landed hard. Together, they made this feel like eavesdropping on two people slowly falling apart and falling in love at the same time.

The opposites attract dynamic worked beautifully because beneath the chaos and post its, these were two lonely people trying to hold themselves together. Their chemistry felt natural, their emotional growth felt earned, and the humor kept everything from becoming too heavy.

Also, any man who falls in love with an aggressively organized woman while actively trying to hold his life together with some post its deserves respect.

Sweet, messy, emotional, and surprisingly healing. That bonus epilogue almost took me out.

Tropes:

📋 Opposites attract
🖤 Grumpy x sunshine vibes
✨ Personal assistant romance

Absolute perfection. Funny and sweet with just the right amount of spice. Kate and Josh are just the cutest and so perfect for each other. This story just makes you feel good and these characters are so real and genuine. The audio was exceptional. Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap were already two of my favorite narrators, but the way they brought Kate and Josh to life was truly special. They put so much heart into their performances and it really put this story on another level. Great story and an amazing accomplishment for Lexie's second book.

I read this book earlier this month so when the audiobook was released before scheduled and Lexie announced this, I RAN to Audible to get my audio copy. I absolutely LOVED the book so I knew I'd fall just as hard and fast for the audio.

The narrators she selected were perfect for these characters. I don't know if I've ever listened to a book narrated by Ryan up to this point. He was great. I can't wait to hear more of his work. Andi Eloise is a great Kate. Both of these narrators are able to make you feel the emotions the characters are expressing throughout the book, which is what I always look for in any narrator.

Now, as for the book, I posted a full review on the digital version of this book but I'll add parts of it here:

I stumbled upon Lexie back before book one, Long Live the King, was released. I read the blurb and was hooked. I just had to get my hands on that book. She was gracious enough to allow me the ARC opportunity and I’ve been in love with her books and Velvet Shadows since. If you’ve read Tyler and Eric’s story, I’m sure you fell head over heels for Eric and how sweet he is. Have I got news for you. The tidbits you get about Josh in that book are just small breadcrumbs for who he is and I can guarantee you’ll fall even harder for him in this book.

Josh Calloway is the lead singer for Velvet Shadows. He’s also one hot SOB to anyone with eyes. He isn’t cocky, nor does he act as if he’s god's gift to the world. He’s just a down to earth guy that loves being around his friends, who he considers family. He has no intention of ever dating or falling in love again. Been there, done that. Has the divorce trauma to prove it.

Kate, well she’s a whole other story. She was in a relationship for years with the worst guy ever. Anthony was so verbally abusive to her that she still hears the ugly things he said to her even after they broke up. The impact those words have on her are deep rooted and won’t go away overnight. When Dani, her BFF, suggests she accept a job similar to hers as an assistant to one of the guys in Velvet Shadows (Josh), Kate takes a leap of faith and goes for it.

I was only 4% in with the digital version when I felt the angst to my soul for the first time, which is what I love about Lexie’s writing. Getting that gut punch while reading, especially that early on, will hook me for life. Having a reader read a book is one thing. Getting the reader to immerse themselves into a story and feeling the words as if they’re the one living the situation is a talent not every author possesses.

Ok, let’s get into the deeper aspect of the book: mental health. Abuse, whether physical or verbal, will mentally affect the victim for a lifetime. At first you may read Kate’s internal dialogue and think she’s a Debbie downer but she’s not. Those thoughts were instilled into her mind through years of negative comments and verbal lashings. Why would someone stay in such a relationship you might ask. Easy. Their perpetrator isolates them so they think they have no one to turn to and nowhere to go. That’s why people stay for years. It doesn’t start immediately or at the degree it gets to if/when someone leaves. It’s a gradual process resulting in a lot of damage. So please, don't read this book and say something negative about Kate because of how she acts. I feel like until you've had someone in your life do to you what was done to her, you'll never fully understand. In situations like this, sympathy may be hard to find but empathy is standing tall, waiting to hug the other person.

Now, back to the not so deep stuff… Like how much I absolutely love all the rom-com movies they watch throughout the book. It’s made me want to rewatch them again. There were some great titles mentioned that I had totally forgotten about. Thanks for reminding me of them.

I know this was a longer review so I'll do a TL;DR for you. Don't wait to read this book, dive into it right now. Don't judge Kate until you've walked a mile in her shoes and even then, still don't judge her. Be prepared to fall deeper in love with Josh. This book is worth its weight in gold. Trust me.

📖🎧 Book & Narrator Review

This book was such a fun, swoony, and emotionally layered ride—and the audiobook made it even better.

Kate Martin is so relatable in her own way. Her need for structure, control, and predictability comes from a real place, and after her breakup, you can feel how she’s trying to hold herself together the only way she knows how. I loved how grounded and real she felt.

And then there’s Josh Calloway…

A literal walking contradiction. Confident, chaotic rockstar on the outside—but underneath, he’s struggling more than he lets anyone see. That vulnerability added so much depth to his character and made him impossible not to love.

💞 Their Dynamic

This is opposites attract at its finest:

* She’s calm, structured, and precise
* He’s impulsive, messy, and unpredictable

But instead of clashing, they balance each other in the best way.

Watching Kate slowly loosen her grip on control while Josh finds comfort and stability in her presence It was soft, emotional, and so satisfying.

🎙️ Narration – Andi Eloise, Ryan Lee Dunlap, Samantha Brentmoor & James Cassidy

This cast absolutely elevated the entire story.

* Andi Eloise brings Kate to life so beautifully—her delivery is controlled, thoughtful, and full of subtle emotion that perfectly matches Kate’s personality. You can feel every moment of growth and vulnerability.
* Ryan Lee Dunlap as Josh So good. He captures that effortless charm and humor, but also those deeper, more emotional moments where Josh is clearly struggling. It adds so much dimension.
* Samantha Brentmoor & James Cassidy add even more depth to the listening experience. Their performances help round out the world and make every interaction feel natural and immersive.

Together, this cast creates:

* 🎭 Distinct, believable characters
* 💞 Chemistry you can feel
* 🎧 A fully immersive, almost cinematic experience

🎸 Vibe Check

* Rockstar x assistant
* Opposites attract
* Emotional healing
* Soft + swoony romance
* Found stability in chaos

⭐ Overall

This is one of those stories that feels:

* Comforting but still emotional
* Lighthearted but with depth
* Easy to fall into and hard to leave

And with this narration cast? It becomes something extra special.

💭 Final Thoughts

Love doesn’t always come perfectly planned…

Sometimes it crashes into your life, turns everything upside down, and somehow makes it all make sense.

And with this narration
You don’t just hear their story—you feel every moment of it.

🎧 I felt that I needed a book narrated by Andi Eloise. Her voice always brings a smile to my face. So I blindly chose this one. Of course I enjoyed her narration and also the secondary characters she voiced. Bliss.

🎧 This has to be my best Ryan Lee Dunlap book to date . His inner monologue is soooo good. Funny on one hand, but I felt his frustration and angst too. Could be because I recognise part of my way of thinking although I have not been diagnosed with anything. Yet. :D

🎧 She won me over with her organization. I loved the movie references, since I was making a list already with romance movies I enjoyed in my youth to watch with my daughter. I loved that it fooled me, because it started so sweet, I was smiling for most of it, and then the spice hit... and it was not too much but certainly not sweet and it caught me by a very pleasant surprise. He is such a sweet man, given that wonderful voice and then the spice hits. Nice. Wink wink. And I love how she evolves through the whole story.

🎧 Mostly I enjoyed their back and forth and little one liners if I can call them that. I am obviously not a well articulated person and I just finished it and don't know how to put my thoughts in order, but lines like "Jesus I think I saw my ancestors" crack me up.

🎧 It seems I have found a new author to enjoy. After I finished and went on to search more, I realised this was only the second book by Ms. Black. There is only one more. So so good for a start. There was a bonus epilogue by Ms. Brentmoor and Mr. Cassidy.

🎧 Overall the book made me happy, so thank you again High Gravity Productions.

‘More Than Words’ by Lexie Black and narrated by Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap, completely pulled me in from the start and even though it’s not something I would usually pick up I am glad I did. I went in expecting a fun rockstar romance but what I got was so much more… it’s an emotional story about Josh and Kate that really sticks with you and had me all fluffy.

Kate and Josh are such a perfect contrast. Kate’s need for structure and control balances Josh’s chaotic, larger than life rockstar personality and watching their relationship grow felt natural and heartfelt. Their chemistry is undeniable from the start, with just the right mix of witty banter, a little tension (secrets) and spice.

The characters felt so sweet. Both of them are dealing with their own struggles and the way those are explored, especially themes around self doubt and mental health just added depth to the story without taking away from the romance of it.

I also have to mention the audiobook narration, which was incredible. The narrators brought so much emotion and personality to the characters that the entire experience felt just perfect and made it even more immersive. I love listening to Andi Eloise and she was perfect for Kate and Ryan Lee Dunlap gave Josh than whole reflective and unsure chaotic feel I expected.

Overall, this is a sweet, emotional and highly engaging romance that balances humor and heart so so perfectly. If you love rockstar romances with strong character development and meaningful connections and some spice when it’s needed, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I pressed play expecting a cute rockstar romance…

…what I got instead? Emotional damage. Healing. And a voice that absolutely wrecked me.

This audiobook completely pulled me under. Andie Eloise brought Kate to life in a way that felt so real it almost hurt—every anxious thought, every quiet hope, every moment of growth… you feel it.

But Ryan Lee Dunlap???

I was not prepared.

The way he became Josh—his chaos, his vulnerability, the cracks beneath the charm… it didn’t feel like a performance. It felt like living inside his head. Raw, messy, beautiful. He didn’t just narrate Josh… he broke me with him and somehow stitched me back together again.

And that’s exactly what this story does too.

Kate and Josh aren’t just opposites—they’re two people trying to survive their own battles. Watching them slowly find comfort, trust, and something deeper? It sneaks up on you. One minute you’re smiling… the next you’re sitting there, emotionally compromised, questioning your life choices.

And that bonus epilogue?! Oh you thought we were done crying? Absolutely not.

This wasn’t just a “great audiobook”—this was an experience. The kind that lingers long after the final chapter.

Safe to say… I’m not okay. And honestly? I don’t want to be.

Josh Calloway is a rockstar God in the music industry. Kate's life implodes and her best friend asks her to come on tour with her to be Josh’s assistant. Kate is organized, assertive and gets the job done. Josh isn’t your typical rockstar, he’s chaotic, kind and sees Kate for who she really is. Josh and Kate could not be more opposite.

Together they are fighting their own battles. I loved watching their journey in finding comfort, trust and battling their insecurities in each other and eventually to HEA. Josh’s genuine concern to be there for Kate and help her find her self worth is beautiful and Kate’s resilience with the noise outside of their relationship just perfection.

Narrators Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap brought their A game to this audiobook. I felt Josh’s struggle with keeping his thoughts quiet amongst the storm from within. He’s a sweet marshmallow when it comes to Kate. Andi Eloise brought out Kate’s vulnerable but quick witted personality beautifully. Together they brought this audio book to life in a vibrate way that had me squealing in delight. Go get this book and experience it for yourself!

I loved it so much 🎤🖤

Thank you so much to Lexie for the Advanced listener copy of
"More than Words".

If I could have given this book 10 stars, I would. I didn't think I could love two characters more Tyler and Eric from the first book "Long Live the King" but oh was I wrong. Josh and Kate's story in More than Words just stole my heart... I cannot explain or describe all the feelings & all the emotions that I had while listening to this audiobook.

Kate Monroe is just out of a horrible manipulative & mentally abusive 4 year relationship. She decides to take a job with a touring band as a fresh start. Her job is to assist/help Josh Calloway the lead singer to stay organised, prepared and on top of things. Before long the two develop feeling and after an almost kiss it all kicks off.

The story is so sweet, romantic and absolutely spicy as hell. I will never look at post-its the same way again and the amount of time the character communicate forehead to forehead actually has a squeeze on my heart...as this is something I do with my other half.... and the epilogue... Oh God!

Treat your ears and put this audiobook in your ears. The narration is simply out of this world. Andi and Ryan are a dream narrator pairing and both brought their characters to life.

📚This was so unexpectedly sweet. I haven’t read two characters so perfect for and that balance each other out so well in a very long time. Kate is super relatable and is fighting her imposter syndrome that just so happens to have the voice of her ex. Josh battles his ADHD on a daily basis and his frustration will break your heart. And the chemistry when these two finally come together has their dynamic shifting from sweet to spicy on a dime!!

🎧There could not have been two more perfect narrators for these characters. Andi Eloise has such a beautifully lyrical tone to her voice and it was no hardship having her in my ears for hours at a time. Ryan Lee Dunlap did a phenomenal job with portraying Josh and the chaotic workings of his brain. The vulnerability came through and brought so much more to his character’s personality.

Okay but WHY did this audiobook have me giggling, kicking my feet, and emotionally attached at 2am??

More Than Words completely stole my heart. Josh and Kate balanced each other so perfectly, and their chemistry felt effortless. Josh has that chaotic rockstar energy but is secretly so soft and vulnerable, and Kate felt incredibly real and relatable.

The ADHD rep was done so thoughtfully, and you could feel the emotional depth in their relationship just as much as the romance and spice.

And the AUDIO?? Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap absolutely crushed this duet narration. Ryan brought so much charm and emotion to Josh, and Andi made Kate feel so authentic. This was actually my first Andi Eloise audiobook and now I NEED more of her work because she is insanely talented.

This audiobook was sweet, emotional, funny, and addictive all at once, and I genuinely didn’t want it to end.

I couldn't get enough of this. Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap were amazing at narrating the characters. They brought all the best of Josh and Kate. Of course they also brought to life who they were, made them feel believable, relatable, and realistic. I also liked the other narrators Samantha Brentmoor and James Cassidy in this. Their performance was amazing too. All of those involved in narrating were incredible to listen to and worked well together and brought this book to life. The banter in this was so good too. The chemistry and spice was just the right amount. I loved that the assistant and the rockstar were the two people who fell for each other. I also loved the narrative. It was incredible, well written, and beautifully crafted. This is a romance story that'll stay with you long after you finish it. This is an absolute must listen. More Than Words was fan-freaking-tastic. Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap did an amazing job of stepping into this emotional and spicy audiobook. And the extra treat of having special guests Samantha Brentmoor and James Cassidy, was amazing. The thing that stuck a cord with me was that Josh(MMC) had ADHD and it was described so well , I thought you were talking to me. But the love story here was a delicious slow burn and once things heated up, they definitely caught fire. Kate(FMC) was amazing as she left her trash ex and did something so outside her norm she couldn’t believe it. Being an assistant to a super hot rockstar was such a fun plot. I loved how even though Josh has issues remembering things, he made a list of things Kate liked so he would remember. Adorable. I am so looking forward to meeting Lexie Black at Spicy Reads in June!

This was a super sweet rock star romance with Neurodivergent rep and recovery from a DV situation (off page but an essential part of the story) that brings two unlikely people together. The connection and vulnerability this book brings is so good. It makes every interaction deeper and the love feel stronger. This is a quick easy listen and has lots of spicy moments thrown in. This audiobook was narrated by Andi Eloise, Ryan Lee Dunlap, Samantha Brentmoor and James Cassidy. This full cast did an amazing job with this story and bringing everyone to life and letting you feel those connection and deep moments. I love Samantha Brentmoor and I really enjoyed the other narrators a few who I have listen to before and would definitely recommend. I love the quality of the audiobook and the sound that was crisp and clear. You really felt like you were there with the characters in these moments.

This story was so good. Funny and sweet with a hint of spice to mix in. A combination that is deadly enjoyable. Kate and Josh are just adorable together and the are like two seperate pieces that somehow still fit together perfectly. Kate a woman of structure, control and balance. Josh a bit more chaotic and live life to the fullest. Together the perfect blend to off set each others over powering personality. The banter, the tension added to their dynamic and provided for such a captivating story. This was an amazing read that was brought to life by some top tier narrators that did a phenomenal job . Andie Eloise and Samantha Brentmoor (Two queens of narration), Ryan Lee Dunlap, and James Cassidy who are ones I love diving in and listening to.

Ryan Lee Dunlap, the vulnerability and emotion he made you feel for Josh was amazing, it felt so real.
They both put so much heart into this one, you could hear the growth of both the characters. An amazing performance from them both.

I am obsessed with the series. I received this as an ALC and listened to about 15 minutes of it before I quickly realized I would love this author’s writing. While it is a standalone, it is book two in a duet so I quickly went and purchased book one and devoured it in one day.

I adore these characters. I’m rooting for them and I love them. The world building is perfect. I want this band to be real so I can go see them in concert and Google over Josh and his body paint.

Adding this duet to my favorite rockstar romance shelf.

Josh is a rockstar with severe ADHD, and Kate is his organized, people‑pleasing assistant from Nashville who’s had more than her share of disappointing men. Their dynamic on tour feels warm and easy to root for, and the mix of music‑world chaos and growing connection works well. The story is an easy listen with characters who are genuinely likable. The duet narration from Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap was a perfect fit for the story.

Huge thanks to High Gravity Production and Lexie Black for the ALC!

Such a good and easy read. I love that I could connect to both main characters. The MMC has ADHD and I can relate to a lot of the trials he deals with. The FMC has self doubt and issues thinking she's not worth the hassle, due to a bad past relationship.
I love these two together and how they work through everything by just having a conversation.
The spice is spicy and the banter is funny. I really enjoyed it.

This was… interesting. Let’s just say they’re fucking sprinkled with some plot. It’s the rockstar and the assistant. This is the second in the series but I haven’t read the first one yet and wasn’t lost.

The duet narration of this was done really well and I enjoyed the narrators voices.

This wasn’t the most mind blowing thing I’ve ever read. I felt a little bored in the middle, almost like I had to try to make it to the end. Overall, not horrible. Very light read.

I really loved the first one so much in this series. At about halfway through, it started to feel sooooo generic and cheesy. I ended up reading the rest of it, but it was a bit too much for me. I thought it was cheesy and over the top. Plus, the dialogue and spicy scenes were super cringe.

More Than Words is a beautiful, heartfelt rockstar romance. Josh is a lovable, funny, adorable musician with ADHD. Kate is his new assistant. She’s very organized and is also trying to recover from a breakup. It was a pleasure listening to their relationship as it developed.
The duet narration by Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap was phenomenal. Andi Eloise was magnificent as sweet, kind, beautiful, organized Kate. Ryan Lee Dunlap was spectacular as cute, funny, chaotic Josh. And the epilogue with Samantha Brentmoor and James Cassidy was absolutely perfect. I highly recommend listening to this audiobook.
