Mac has a great way with words. He provides details about each one of the characters enough that you can picture them in your mind. But he doesn't give you enough information to figure out the surprising ending. I plan to read more of his books. I recommend you do the same.

Cam Derringer is the usual Florida PI. He's looking for his missing wife, when he's hired for another job, and finds a new woman. Of course, it's all connected in a huge plot. He gets beaten up a lot, and he probably has it coming to him.

Knee Deep - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Key West PI Cam Derringer has been looking for evidence in the rapidly-cooling case of his wife Malinda, missing (after a suspected boat-jacking raid five years earlier). As his search continues he's involved in a violent event that nearly proves fatal. Who's Jenny Jacobs? Why does she help him?
Hired by a wife to find her missing husband, Cam and his 'daughter' Diane are getting too close to the truth for both sides of a terrorist plot, that's linked to boat-jacking and drug-running.
As the body-count in Davy Jones' locker rises, Cam faces tough questions from the FBI...he's knee deep in trouble and a net of death and betrayal is gradually closing in on him.

Mac Fortner really knows his stuff when it comes to riveting crime-thrillers and flawed, believable main characters, in exciting storylines.
Get your copy of Knee Deep as soon as you can - it's a sure-fire, action-thriller-winner of an adventure to grace your bookshelves... don't miss it!

Initially I enjoyed the story. As the story evolved, enjoyment reduced. The plot became overly complex, yet characters lacked depth. The lack of detail when characters were introduced made it hard to recall who was who. I read it in Kindle. There were no x-ray entries to assist track the characters.

The story is mostly linear but in places stepped back ("x hours earlier..."). I prefer stories that unfold in chronological order.

The nature of a lot of the characters in the story were predictable but not to the point you understood how they were involved or who might return from the 'missing' list.

There is a hint of olde worlde detective story that I dislike in the writing style. It may appeal to some but I won't be reading another by the same author.

Summing up: A just OK read that I did finish but...

Once again, another of Mac Fortner's novels, Knee Deep, kept me turning the pages and did not disappoint. The action and twists and turns were enough to keep me on pins and needles. The characters are as dark and as complex as his characters in his Sunny Ray books. In Knee Deep, the plot starts off simply enough, but soon turns into a complicated maze of deceit, revenge, and intrigue. Fortner's ability to weave such a complicated plot in a quick-read book (it's hard to put down, and his unpredictable ending will surely satisfy the reader who is looking for a fast ride and lots of action. I look forward to the next book in this Cam Derringer series.

I don’t know what happened…started out fairly well but. I maybe lost interest. For me too many characters, then it just became meh.

A fun action packed read. Love, lies, murder and humor. You'll be cheering for Cam Derringer as he fumbles his way through an assortment of friends and enemies trying distinguish one from the other. Set in Key West, you can't help but love the quirky characters Cam calls his friends.

A good, fun & easy read. Cam is an interesting character, like many of those that surround him. I'll be reading the rest of this series, as well as Fortner's other books!

The plot was okay, some things were obvious to occur, other things I was genuinely shocked by but it all was super rushed. A lot of details were missed that could have built up the story better. There is little to no character building, which was confusing for how many people were shuffled in and out with multiple names. I couldn’t keep track. Also, in the most non-sexist way possible this book screams *wrote by a man* the only thing we knew about the women was their name & what there bodies looked like, specifically their boobs… really dude? Giving it 3 stars, but really it’s more like a 2.5 mayybee 2.75. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re an adult male at a 3rd grade reading level. It’s just not that great, sorry!

*changing my review to 2 stars the more I think about it, ugh sorry I just cant* For being a PI, Cam has got to be the worst investigator I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Definitely not continuing on with the series.

"Time to get off."
Narrator Tom Taverna becomes the Key West P.I. fan Derringer, as he gets drawn into the search for a missing man, an insurance assessor, gone for three weeks. Dan's own wife vanished five years before and he's still trying to find out what happened to her. Then along comes this rather attractive woman who almost makes him forget his post love. But then more people in the little port start vanishing including his Cam's partner.

Written in the first person so that everything becomes immediate and personal, the text doesn't pull it's punches right up to the father predictable ending. But with interesting characters and full action plot, this story is recommended to those who enjoy the slow of waves on a boat as well as slaps on the protagonists.

Fast, furious and funny.

This is a very good start to a new series about a private eye, Cam Derringer, operating out of his houseboat in Key West Florida. It is a more realistic private eye story because Cam is not an ex-Navy SEAL. He is a former lawyer. So, he doesn’t beat-up or shoot every bad man he encounters, and he does encounter quite a few. Instead, he interviews witnesses and suspects and tries to develop his case. The case involves missing pleasure boats and often the boat owners as well. There are unexpected and surprising plot twists that breathe new life into the mystery just when you thought you had a handle on a solution. All in all, a good start to this mystery series.

A medium length Kindle unlimited offering that I could have skipped. Cam Derringer (cheesy name) is found beaten, naked on a dirt road in the Keys with no idea how he got there. He was investigating the rash of stolen boats in the area that have grown in the last five years since his wife and her boat disappeared.

He is a disbarred lawyer (why is never fully explained) and now a PI who kind of trips over information instead of really investigating. The bad guy seems easy enough for the reader to figure out but he bumbles on for hundreds of pages before getting to it.

Won't be going on with this series

Head Twister

I’ve read hundreds of books just this year as I’m a voracious reader, helped by the pandemic with time on my hands.

As plots and stories go, subplots, twists and turns and surprises are par for the course but this book really takes the cake. Even the title, Knee Deep had an amusing part toward the end (not a spoiler alert).

Action packed, interesting characters, romance, friendship, heartache, devotion, loyalty, and betrayal all played major parts in the story very cleverly but carefully linking and tying everything together.

A Great Read

I really enjoyed this one. It is action packed and suspense filled and will keep you reading long past your bedtime…just one more chapter. Cam is working as a PI in Key West after loosing his law license. His wife went missing five years ago along with her boat and he is still trying to find out what happened. Boats and their owners are still going missing and Cam is determined to solve this.

👍♥️

Absolutely cant wait to read the next adventure of Cam. I really enjoyed the book. The book was faced paced dialogue with intrigue, seduction, murder, love, grief, mystery, and friendship (& so much more). The bond between Cam and Diane characters is priceless. Love Cam's humor and quick wit. I can see it becoming a tv series. 😉

The first half of this book was quite boring, to the point I almost gave up hope on finishing it. BUT, finally about 70% through, it got interesting and I really enjoyed the last few chapters.
There's a lot of "he said, then she said, then he said" which makes it read very choppy, like you're just reading a screenplay conversation. The storyline of how it ended up, was actually really good though

Terrorists plan a bomb attack and insurance fraud, boat theft, and drugs fund it.

Fast-paced, excellent characters, with plenty of twists and changes as murder covers loose ends and a concrete block seems the common form of burial. Action flows quickly throughout and surprises form natural attention grabbing elements. A fascinating tale and well worth the time.

I was immersed in the story right from the beginning.
Cam is a disbarred lawyer turned private detective in Key West looking for his wife. She disappeared years ago, but he has not stopped looking.
There is a lot of snarky dialog and the usual strange Keys inhabitants.
Well written with lots of action and betrayals.

Knew deep Florida keyscrime

The book was good. It had some surprises and a good ending. The characters had a good blending to figure the good and the bad people. The keys were a good blend of the area that carried the story with some surprises! I would recomend this

AS MANY TWISTS AS A RATTLESNAKE IN DEATH VALLEY

Mac Fortner has written a suspenseful story incorporating more plot twists and turns then a rattlesnake crossing the hot sands of Death Valley. Quite the page turner.

Couldn't wait to see what happened next.

This book was one that you arranged your chores around so you could be able to get back to reading it. Even if I wanted to stop I kept reading more chapters, just to see what was going to happen next! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
