My Little Doe pulled me in from the start and ended up being such an emotional ride. This is not just “dark romantasy with wolf shifters.” There is SO much more going on here with grief, trauma, pregnancy, survival, healing, family, and learning how to feel safe again.
I really liked Zay. She was strong without being written like nothing could touch her. She was falling apart, but didn’t let that get in the way. Her love for Aspen, her little sister, stayed at the center and that made her feel so real to me.
And Quinn? Ugh. Quinn was perfect. Not because he magically fixed everything, but because he gave her what she actually needed: patience, safety, care, and space to heal. Their connection is slow, but it makes sense because it is built on trust first, not just attraction. Quinn’s perspective added even more weight and made his protectiveness feel earned.
The pendant. December 7. Two hundred and forty seconds. Will forever live with me rent free. It added another layer to Zay’s grief and made everything she was carrying feel even heavier.
The darker tone and slow-burn pacing worked so well because the story gave the heavier moments room to breathe instead of rushing the healing or the relationship. From beginning to end, this was so well written, especially with how sensitive some of the subject matter is. It never felt heavy just to be heavy.
The ending was just perfect for the story and made the whole emotional journey feel worth it.
I’d recommend this to readers who like emotional dark romantasy, wolf shifters, slow-burn romance, protective MMCs, found family, healing arcs, and stories that handle heavier themes with care.
I was so excited to receive the ARC for My Little Doe. I just want to say a big thank you J. L. Rosenauer for the opportunity to rate and review your book!
Immediately within reading the dedication and content warnings, my eyes welled with tears.
The main events do happen early on and once it got around 80-85%, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and it just didn’t. I think because I do read a lot of dark/pitch black romances and erotic horrors, that’s why I was expecting something crazy to happen. I’m honestly happy it didn’t though, because what the FMC went through was quite traumatic and throughout the entire book, it’s showing how resilient she is becoming by growing through her grief and healing.
This is definitely not your normal wolf shifter romance. It is about a young 18y/o going through one of the most tragic things a woman could ever go through and coming through to the other side stronger. As soon as the MMC was introduced, I immediately knew he was the one hahaha. He is the absolute best man, even though he might not have given off those vibes in the beginning. The way he doted on her, understood what she was going through and was willing to do whatever he could to help her through it. And the presents he got her for Christmas?!?! I absolutely loved his POV characters!! But mind you, this is most definitely a slower burn romance! It focuses mostly on the healing after a loss. It also does very well on navigating through an interracial relationship.
This book was so emotional and quite powerful. If you are a woman and/or have been through pregnancy, I definitely recommend reading this book.
As I said, this is definitely more of a contemporary romance that does have some “darker” and “heavier” themes to it. I think the only complaint I have is that the lead up to the possible pack “war” was mentioned quite a bit, that I wish the actual, for lack of a better word “war” was resolved immediately. I would’ve enjoyed reading that play out some more and some possible dark themes happening during those potential scenes.
Please check the content warnings before reading.
Tropes: Shifter🐺 Captive/Guard Slow burn One Bed 🛏️ Forced proximity Pregnancy 🤰🏻 Infant loss Found family 🧑🧑🧒🧒 Hate (kinda?) to love
4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A paranormal shifter romance with DEPTH?! You get it with this one. No miscommunication tropes here, just real depth as very real life elements intersect to build a story with lovable characters you can’t help but root for. I will say, the first bit of the story I wasn’t sure how I was feeling so if you find yourself there, PLEASE KEEP GOING! It turns out to be so much more sweet and emotional than you’re expecting.
This story follows Zaylayuh, a girl already carrying the weight of her family on her shoulders… and on top of that? She’s pregnant. What she doesn’t know yet is that the baby growing inside her is far from ordinary 👀🐺
Before she can even process any of it, she’s kidnapped by the baby daddy’s father and held captive for reasons she doesn’t understand. While trapped, she starts hearing wolf howls, seeing things she can’t explain, and when the truth finally crashes into her world it leads to heartbreaking loss.
Quinnlyn, who was supposed to be guarding her, ends up helping her escape to a secluded cabin where his titi cares for her while she heals. Watching Zay slowly rebuild herself after everything she endured was one of the strongest parts of the book for me. She goes from surviving to wanting to fight back, wanting control over her own life again.
And the romance? SLOW. BURN. Like painfully slow at times 😭 but the progression from enemies, to reluctant allies, to friendship, to oh shit we’re kissing felt earned. When the flashbacks start revealing there’s more connecting Quinn and Zay than we originally knew, everything starts clicking into place.
The final act had me locked in. Zay and the pack formulate a plan to take down the man responsible for destroying so much of her life, and honestly I loved that she got the final killing blow herself. It felt deserved. It felt powerful.
What hit hardest for me though was the ending. After all the supernatural chaos, Zay returns home only to face the reality she left behind — addiction, neglect, and needing to protect her little sister Aspen. Seeing her choose a better life for Aspen after everything she survived was such a satisfying full-circle moment 🖤
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. The burn is VERY slow, the spice is lighter and more emotional than explicit, and there were a few moments where it felt like the story could’ve wrapped earlier, but I still enjoyed where it ended. Definitely a journey-heavy paranormal romance with healing, loss, found family, and a heroine who grows through every painful step.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story flows naturally creating this need to know how everything will unfold. This one is a slow burn with a sprinkle of spicey scenes. I do appreciate how on those scenes the words the characters use are more realistic. I loved all the characters, they each have their own vibe. My favorite is Callie, I felt really drawn to her. If you liked Mate by Ali Hazlewood I recommend you read this when it releases. It’s got that found family feel and the tension, holy cow I was like when do they reach Fuck it because man was there some real buildup. Please check the triggers before reading, the author did a great job listing out what to expect and mental health is important. All that to say I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to read this as an ARC and I can’t wait for others to read this.
This book was such an emotional roller coaster. J. L. Rosenauer hit all the marks on this book. Please ensure to check for trigger warnings.
The beginning of this book had me in all me feels.. mostly anger and sadness. My heart ached for Zay. The build up and relationship of Quinn and Zay captured every part of me, I found it extremely hard to put this book down! The ending, brought absolute joy to my soul. The healing mended my heart in so many ways!
Thank you for the opportunity to be an ARC reader!

Be sure to review the trigger warnings and are 100% ok with them. At first I thought this would be your average wolf shifter love story, which to some extent, it was, but the trauma in the book made it different from others. The trauma that the female main character went through left me in shock and she was only 18. How she managed to heal from something like that is beyond me. I’m glad Zay was able to not just heal for herself but was resilient for her baby sister and helped her get away from a bad home situation. Love story aside, I enjoyed the strength that Zay showed in this story. I enjoyed Quinn being the one to help her heal and plow her to get the vengeance she got.
This book was an easy read with a great story and just the right amount of spice! It was easy to read and did not include intricate world building.
I loved the relationships that occurred, I started the book hating Quinn and loved him by the end. He started off as a brute and his character evolved into a complex lover.
I was kindly given this arc. Haven’t loved a story so much that i read the book in one day! Zay and Quinn were everything! The bond, Louisiana and even the novo just had me hooked. I was crying on and off the first 20% of the book. Aspen is just the cutest little girl and deserves the world.
Tomato-faced, snot-blocked, curled-up-crying-because-you-can-relate kinda wrecked. The sound trauma is so accurately described it was like reading a page from my own history. The emotional bleed left me wrecked initially. I found as I the further I read, the more Zalayuh fell apart, then slowly pieced back together, had a profound cathartic effect on me. You see, I experienced the loss of a 26 week pre-term infant. I was blessed to have shared 32 days with my little Wesley. Every second was a miracle. This layer of Zalayuh’s journey made her flesh and bone to me. This part of Zalayuh and Quinnlyn’s story hit the hardest. Initially it felt the biggest part of their story . . .
Bliss.
Strange that I said the loss of an infant “initially felt the biggest part of their story”, right? But, it isn’t really. Once you take in what came after that loss. How she gets to being-whole-after. Who’s next to her *after* is big. That someone is solid, steady, quietly cares, lets her heal at her own pace, picks her up when all she wants to do is stay on her knees. And this, for anyone that has suffered ANY sort of loss, is massive. Everything Quinnlyn does, though it’s not always understood, he does . . . for her.
Zalayuh’s voice came through the pages so clearly, like I was sitting with an old friend while she caught me up. Reading MY LITTLE DOE in the right ‘voice’, which came surprisingly easy here, really amplified the quality of the writing. Quinnlyn and Zalayuh are very well-fleshed, making them a breeze to solidify as very ‘real’ people—even with the Shifter trope. *Zalayuh’s reaction to witnessing the shift is, in my opinion, about as close to what I’d picture the average Joe/Jane’s reaction would be.
J.L. Rosenauer has most assuredly created a smart, emotionally charged love story, whose HEA is hard won—but, in the end, worth every teardrop that fell from my eyes.

My Little Doe had me feeling so many emotions. This is one of those stories that truly sticks with you. Set in Tennessee and Louisiana during the ’90s, the atmosphere feels vivid and immersive in a way that completely pulls you into the story.
Even though this is categorized as a dark romantasy, the vibes I personally got leaned more toward small-town contemporary romance with subtle splashes of dark fantasy through the werewolf/shifter elements and the trauma the FMC experienced. I read a lot of dark romance and romantasy, so this felt lighter to me personally 🖤
To me, the heart of the story was the FMC navigating grief after pregnancy loss and learning how to heal more than the romance itself… and honestly, I think that aspect was executed beautifully.
The connection between the FMC and MMC was built over time, and while it definitely delivered tension and slow-burn chemistry, it was also incredibly sweet. The MMC was patient, caring, and understanding in a way I really appreciated. I especially enjoyed the FMC’s POV because it showed her internal battle with these newly developing feelings while also giving insight into why she resisted them so strongly.
One thing I do wish had been explored a little more was the lore surrounding the wolves/shifters. I would’ve loved a deeper explanation of the world and mythology behind it all. Especially since this is a standalone, there were several moments of “you have so much to learn” without fully giving the reader those answers 😔
This story delivers beautifully on the enemies-to-lovers and slow-burn tension while also including themes of kidnapping and captivity, trauma and healing, forced proximity/one bed, and found family. There are probably more tropes than I listed here 😅 Those were just the loudest ones for me!
This was my first time reading anything by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m already looking forward to reading more of her work.
I do recommend checking the trigger warnings beforehand, as there are several descriptive and potentially triggering scenes throughout the story.
ARC Disclosure: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
“I received an advance copy of this book from the author for a honest review." My Little Doe by J.L. Rosenauer was such an engaging paranormal romance that kept me hooked from beginning to end. What stood out the most to me was how well the author captured the characters and allowed them to grow throughout the story. Zay goes through so much emotionally and physically, yet she never completely loses the fierce determination to survive and protect the people she loves. Even while being held captive, her concern constantly went back to her little sister, which made her character feel incredibly real and easy to connect with. Watching her slowly learn who she could trust while finding her own strength made her growth one of my favorite parts of the book. Quinn ended up being far more layered than he first appeared. At the beginning, he’s one of the people helping keep Zay captive because of orders being forced onto him, but as the story develops, you see the conflict building inside him. His protectiveness toward Zay slowly grows stronger, and I loved seeing him struggle between loyalty, fear, and doing what he knew was right. The author did a great job showing his growth instead of rushing it. The chemistry between Quinn and Zay had a really nice slow build that kept me invested the entire time. Their connection felt emotional as well as romantic, and the tension between them kept me wanting to know what would happen next. I also appreciated how the story addressed racism toward Quinn and showed Zay standing up for him. It added depth to both the characters and their relationship. Between the werewolf elements, suspense, emotional moments, and character growth, this book was a very compelling read. The writing kept me engaged the whole way through, and by the end I was fully rooting for Quinn and Zay.
this was my first book i've read from this author, & I was lucky enough to get an arc copy to buddy read with a friend. I can't stress it enough— read the triggers in this book before going ahead, this is a very dark story. the book starts off with the fime, zay, finds out she is pregnant & is kidnapped by her baby's fathers family member & held captive. during her captivity she experiences some awful memories, trauma beyond belief, but also a friend in someone when you feel like you have nobody. this is a classic case of stockholm syndrome & I loved every page of it. another thing to note, I loved that while I was reading, I could smell, taste & see every scene that was happening because it was so descriptive. if you're looking for an enemies to lovers/slow burn trope that's going to break your heart over & over, but then heal it in the end, this is your book. again, check triggers!

This book absolutely wrecked me in the quietest, most human way possible.
At first glance, My Little Doe sounds like it’s going to be another dark shifter romance, but it’s so much more layered than that. Beneath the wolves, captivity, pack politics, and survival elements is a story about grief, trauma, healing, and learning how to breathe again after life has hollowed you out.
Zalayuh felt painfully real to me. She’s not written as some untouchable badass heroine who magically survives trauma without scars. She’s exhausted, grieving, stubborn, angry, terrified, and still somehow keeps going. Watching her slowly reclaim pieces of herself throughout the story honestly hurt in the best way.
And Quinn? Ugh. I loved him. Not because he “saved” her, but because he learned how to care for her gently. Their relationship is a true slow burn built on trust, patience, protection, and emotional safety before romance ever takes center stage. It never felt rushed or performative.
This book also handles pregnancy loss and grief with so much care. Some scenes genuinely sat heavy on my chest afterward. The emotional weight of this story lingers long after you finish reading it.
I also loved that the werewolf elements never overshadowed the humanity of the story. The supernatural world added tension and danger, but the emotional core stayed centered on survival, family, healing, and finding a home in people who choose you.
If you’re expecting nonstop spice or a typical possessive alpha shifter romance, this may surprise you. This is darker, quieter, more emotional, and deeply character driven.
I started the book without having any expectations, and I was truly blown away by the story.
So real, so heavy. A reality for many women.
The story pulls you in very quickly, and the main events happen fast as well. The difficult moments were described so realistically that even someone like me who currently doesn’t want children , cried like a little child during several scenes. The emotion completely overwhelms you, and you feel such immense pain.
Buuut our MMC was so caring, so devoted, thoughtful, supportive, and loving. He makes you realize that love isn’t always just words and good sex - it’s care. It’s making warm food for the person you love, giving them a small gift, or simply being there.
Being there and listening, truly hearing what the other person is saying, even through their silence. Wiping away tears, even the ones you didn’t cause.
It was genuine and beautifully written. I was left speechless.
Now let’s talk about the werewolves. My obsession with them started in early childhood with Teen Wolf, and here they were portrayed wonderfully. We get a clear understanding of the hierarchy, how everything works, and why, which I really appreciated, because I don’t like when something is simply mentioned without being properly explained.
So many emotions, so much sadness, so much happiness.
I’m giving it 4⭐️ because I wish the book had been a little longer, and in my opinion, the villain’s death was a bit too easy.
I want to be honest with you before you read this review. I have experienced child loss myself and I picked this book up knowing what was inside. What I did not expect was how deeply it would reach me.
J.L. Rosenauer perfectly captures the thoughts that go through your mind in the weeks and months after losing a baby. The kind of thoughts that are rarely spoken out loud because child loss is one of the most taboo and lonely forms of grief there is. Seeing those feelings written so truthfully on the page made me feel seen in a way I did not know I still needed.
If you have experienced child loss, please know that this book describes those moments in vivid detail, and you will be transported right back to them. Only you can decide if you are ready for that. But I can tell you that for me, it healed part of my soul.
Watching Zay slowly find her way through the devastation and come out the other side into peace, love, and a true family is quietly extraordinary. And Quinn, in the second half of the book, gives her exactly the kind of love and support she deserved all along.
This is not an epic paranormal romantasy. The werewolf storyline is really a backdrop for a deeply human story about surviving the unsurvivable and daring to believe in a beautiful life after. For readers who come to it understanding that it will stay with them for a long time.
Five stars without hesitation. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book starts with Zalayah pregnant straight from the beginning so we get into the story and find out how she gets there as the story unfolds. It takes place in the mid 90s and as someone who was getting married and having children when this storyline started, I was immediately immersed in the era. The author is great about including things like Blockbusters, pay phones and pagers and even includes themes of racism that speak to the timeline.
The writing is not juvenile but the author did an amazing job presenting the characters as such. Zalayah is newly 18 at the start and while she has been forced to grow up young, she is still a teenager.
I think this book is great in general but is especially poignant for those who have experienced, or can relate to, the incredibly dark events that unfold. I signed up for this arc knowing what I was getting into and It was particularly healing for me as a woman who can relate.
I was disappointed in how the resolution regarding the person who orchestrated her kidnapping happened but that may just be a me thing and it didn’t ruin the story for me overall.
I really feel like I went on the journey with Zalayah and Quinnlynn and experienced the fear, anger, heartache and grief. What is truly amazing is the author did put me back together again by the end. If you’re sensitive to any of the themes in this book, please take care and read the trigger warnings. This book is heavy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️/5 Tropes: Captive X Guard Hate to love Shifter So much hurt but also healing Teenage pregnancy Child loss
This book absolutely destroyed me and broke my heart in the best way possible.
The way this story is written pulled me in so quickly and easily I did not want to put it down. I was constantly turning the page desperate to learn what was going to happen next.
The majority of the book is written from the FMC’s point of view but towards the end we do get to see from the MMC’s point of view and gave us such a different perspective of the same situation and personally I loved how it tied everything together.
Zay’s story, while heartbreaking, was also so empowering and written with so much care and compassion. I truly felt her emotions and think the author did a great job capturing the devastation and loss she was feeling.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Quinn in the beginning (obviously) but he so quickly redeemed himself and seeing his point of view and WHY he had to do what he did, and how he protected and supported her through her loss was moving.
I really can’t recommend this book enough, I only wish it was longer because I want MORE.
please check trigger warnings and be mindful of your mental health.
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD! In the begining you think oh teen pregnancy and the guy who isn't going to help . The Fmc is going to have to raise the baby on her own .. Then the story gets craxy where she is taken and but in a cell ... Zay is kept there because of a family secret of the babies father. His dad finds out and holds her captive.... why she's taken and the nafarious plans for her unfold. The Guard who is in charge of making sure she doesn't escape Quinn is not super nice in the begining or so it seems . What transpires ans the hidden identities of those who wont let her go . There are themes of loss of pregnacy and recovery and Captor captive love trope but the journey to redemtion and safety is a long one ... this story takes place in Tennessee and then in Louisiana so you get some southern flare in the cooking and atmosphere and the dialect . Themes of interratial relationships and rascism in the south in the 90's as well . Add in a touch of paranormal activity in the book is a nice twist to a dark contemporary romance . Ten out of ten for the MMC and his redemption arc . And the FMC for her recovery and strength . They really go through it . Tried not to spoil everything in my reveiew so you can read this masterpiece for yourself ... you will cry a bunch but find joy in the end as it has an HEA !

This was DARK,and honestly a little unsettling. All while being emotional, and completely addictive in a way that had me hooked from the first chapter 🖤🦌 This is definitely one of those books that pulled me into a twisted atmosphere and kept me there the entire time. The tension, the obsession, the emotional intensity… EVERYTHING felt heavy in the best way possible. The relationship dynamic was so complex and toxic but also weirdly emotional and vulnerable underneath it all, which made it impossible to look away. J.L. Rosenauer really knows how to write damaged, morally grey characters that completely consume your thoughts 😭 And the MMC??? Absolutely unhinged, possessive, obsessive, and terrifyingly devoted. The kind of character that makes you question your sanity because WHY was I blushing at some of the things he said LMFAO 😩 What really stood out to me was the atmosphere and emotional darkness throughout the story. There was actually good story buidling and It wasn’t just shock value because there was genuine emotional pain, trauma, and desperation woven into everything, which made the story hit even harder.
If you love: 🖤 dark romance 🖤 obsessive MMCs 🖤 toxic but addictive dynamics 🖤 emotional intensity 🖤 possessive energy 🖤 morally grey characters 🖤 unsettling atmosphere 🖤 books that leave you emotionally damaged
From the dedication alone, I knew this book was going to wreck me emotionally. The Southern atmosphere and 90s nostalgia felt incredibly authentic, and as someone who lives in the South, every detail hit perfectly. I was hooked from the very beginning.
I became deeply invested in Zalayuh’s journey. Even after reading the trigger warnings, Chapter 11 completely shattered me. I was sobbing for her. The emotional depth of this story pulled at every heartstring in the best and most painful way.
This is one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it. The rawness, trauma, healing, and ultimately hopeful ending felt so real and beautifully handled. And Quinn- He genuinely surprised me. There were multiple moments where I found myself thinking, “Hell yeah.” The deeper we got into Zalayuh’s healing journey, the more I fell in love with him too. The spice was perfectly steamy just like we expect it to be with a protective warewolf.
This was such a beautifully written love story with a fantasy twist through the werewolves, but at its core, it’s a story about survival, healing, and finding love after pain. I’ll absolutely be recommending this book to anyone willing to listen to me.
I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
The premise had real potential. A captive and her reluctant guard in a werewolf world. Dark, atmospheric, slow burn. On paper, exactly my kind of read.
Unfortunately, the execution didn’t live up to it.
The writing felt choppy and disconnected throughout, scenes and phrases that didn’t flow naturally into one another, which made it hard to stay immersed. The world-building was frustratingly thin for a paranormal story.
What hurt the most, though, was the romance. For a slow burn to work, you need yearning, stolen glances, loaded silences, tension that builds under the surface. Quinnlyn read as broody and closed off, but not in a way that made me want to crack him open. There was little chemistry between him and the FMC, no tender moments that made me root for them.
One thing the book does genuinely well is the way Zalayuh’s grief and trauma are handled. Her suffering isn’t rushed or conveniently resolved, it stays with her, shapes her, becomes part of who she is. That kind of emotional honesty is rare, and it’s what kept me reading.
I wanted to love this. The bones were there. But between the uneven prose and the emotional distance between the characters, My Little Doe just wasn’t my cup of tea.
This book grabbed me from the very beginning. Zalayuh shows such strength and resilience that it’s hard not to root for her immediately. The amount of trauma this girl has gone through is unimaginable, but yet it is portrayed in an appropriate manner. We felt it all! It was not under played, it raw and real. So many times these scenes lose sight of the impact on women and the rest of their lives, it doesn’t just happen and we move on forever. It lives with us forever.
Bonded! I appreciate that the bonding wasn’t brought to light until later on, it gave us a chance to really acknowledge everything else that was unraveling. We were able to see the Pack dynamic, relationships unfold and unravel, as well and new ones being formed. Everyone aspect of family function is touched on, we are reminded that we never truly know what’s going on behind closed doors. How quick some were to turn on each other, but also how quick a stranger was to integrate them into the family. The darkness of the events in this book was turned to light by the end of the book. Quite frankly, I needed a happy ending to all of that!

Werewolves, love, heartbreak, teen pregnancy, infant loss. Read that again. Emotional roller-coaster is an understatement. With that said I loved every minute of this book. Its sad, its beautiful. It breaks you then fills you will love. I cried at least 4 different times, some sad most joyful years. Our MFC Zay has just turned 18 and finds out she is pregnant by a friend of her brother. Things go wild from there. Kidnapped by her unborn child's grandfather and held captive until the baby is born. Things take a turn for the worst for our beautiful soul Zay. Along the way she found our MMC Quinn, he was her guard while held captive. Mean, dismissive, secretly protective. Without giving too much more because its worth the read for you to discover for yourself, the story gets dark, sad and heartbreaking. But the ending, oh man the ending. So many tears. This won't be a single read book for me. Ill be rereading it once its released and add it to my shelf of my favorite books.
Spice was about a 3 (That slow burn was burning though)
This story was absolutely heart wrenching. I demolished it in one day. From page one I was HOOKED. Zalayuh's growth throughout , her grief , her everything is just stunning to read, to feel to know. And Quinnlyn's pure dedication is so powerful. The real , raw emotion of this book had me absolutely sobbing. The pregnancy and grief was hard enough to get through, but to add in the 90's setting with the mixed couple was a home run. Adding in a little of Quinn's POV was a bonus for me I love seeing from both POV's. And I'm a sucker for it.
My only complaint was that I felt there was a strong story behind Ravik & the pack, like he was a major issue and that ending gave me a little bit of an "oh ok" feeling instead of a "YES".

I’m giving it 5 ⭐️ because the book Was fantastic.
My Little Doe has an interesting dark and mysterious atmosphere, especially for readers who enjoy emotional tension and haunting themes. The writing creates a moody vibe, and the symbolism throughout the story adds depth to the overall tone. Some moments feel emotionally intense and visually vivid, which helps the book stand out stylistically.
However, the story may not work for every reader. The pacing can feel slow at times, and it can be difficult to fully connect with the characters or stay emotionally invested in the plot. While the dark aesthetic and themes are intriguing, the narrative itself may feel repetitive or lacking momentum depending on your reading preference.
Overall, My Little Doe is a book that leans heavily into atmosphere and emotion rather than fast-moving plot. Readers who enjoy darker, character-driven stories may appreciate it more, but for others, it can be difficult to stay fully engaged throughout the book.
What has really stuck with me post-read is how gritty J.L Rosenauer allows her books it get, especially this one.
The pain and despair that bleeds out of the loss and rebuilding of Zay is palpable. As a mother that has had an intact miscarriage, her description is raw and utterly heartbreaking, just as it should be. JL takes her experience as a birthworker and a loss mother herself really brings the birth aspect of the story to life.
Her writing allows you to get lost in the story. I’ll be honest, I expected this to be a sort of Twilight-esk book but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The werewolves add to the story, they aren’t the whole story. The character development, especially Quinn’s is phenomenal, but I won’t give away too many details about that ;)
I was given an Advanced reader copy by the amazing author and This had me in all my feels completely, being a mom who also has angel babies 🥹❤️ it’s such an amazing book filled with trials and love. Zay & Quinn were everything! How he pretty much loved her from afar and then saved her even if it wasn’t how he or she would’ve liked it to be. Quinn’s family from him mom’s side is truly remarkable I love his Titi, especially how great she was with Zay and the bond they share over something so hard.. Zay sister I really hope there is a book on her and finding love she’s a ride or ☠️ and The love they also have for Zays sister Aspen is truly amazing they are such wonderful parents to her. I lord the ending you gave for them both bringing a new baby into the world. I really can’t wait to see what’s in store next!

ARC read—I absolutely loved reading Zaylayuh and Quinnlyn’s story. I’m not usually one to gravitate toward slow burns, but this one had me completely hooked from beginning to end.
The chemistry between these two was absolutely worth the slow burn. I never expected their relationship to unfold the way it did, and discovering how and why their story came to be was such a beautiful surprise.
This book definitely brought tears to my eyes more than once. No matter what Zaylayuh was feeling whether it was heartbreak, hope, or happiness you couldn’t help but feel every emotion right alongside her.
I highly recommend this to my paranormal romance lover girlies, my slow burn girlies, and anyone looking for a beautifully emotional story with medium spice.
And trust me, J.L. Rosenauer really makes you earn that first kiss. 🖤🦌🥀✨
