Since exiting a finance career in a world of cubicles, Bruce Fottler has been busy writing novels. His latest is the suspense thriller: "The Initiative: In Harm's Way (Book One)."

Bruce grew up in the Chicago suburbs and moved to the Boston area as a young teen. While seeking a career-track that mostly put him behind a desk, he dabbled in creative pursuits such as producing, writing, and directing film shorts. However, it was always writing novels that interested him the most because they aren't limited by production budgets, technical capabilities, or tight shooting schedules.

Bruce has five published novels: "Chasing Redemption" (sci-fi thriller), "Dover Park" (mystery), "The Juncture" (time-travel drama). "Paladin's Odyssey" (post-apocalyptic thriller), and "The Initiative: In Harm's Way" (thriller).

His novel "Paladin's Odyssey" was recently reviewed in Publishers Weekly magazine (Jan 2016).

Sometimes I'm reading a book and I know what is going on, however, the last part of Dover Park blew me away because it was so unexpected. Throughout the book there are lots of ups and downs as to what is going on and who is responsible but the ending was a complete surprise.

The Moreau family have a quiet life in a quiet town until Jim starts getting strange phone calls from a teen saying she is his daughter. She then shows up on his doorstep. Rachel knows all about Jim and his brother, Uncle Tom, but states that everything in the house is different and she has never seen Jim's wife Sara or their two sons. She claims her mother is Paula who died when she was 5 and following her death Jim became an alcoholic. In reality Paula was a close friend of Jim's but died in an accident at the river.

Truth? Miracle? Con? What is going on?

Bruce Fottler has written a really good mystery here! I can honestly say I was leaning one way about how the book would end happily ever after and, as I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the last quarter of the book was mind blowing. I highly recommend this book to mystery lovers!

I received this ebook free from the author for review purposes.

Thank you to LibraryThing and the author Bruce Fottler for providing me with an e-copy of Dover Park in exchange for an honest review. I very rarely give 5 stars to any book but this one definitely deserves it. What makes this book different from other novels is that this mystery leads you in one direction for a while and then swerves completely into another direction. Just when you have adjusted to the new plot, everything changes again. I don't want to get into the plot of the book because it might give away too much information. All I can do is strongly encourage you to read Dover Park. This is one mystery you will not soon forget.

Rachael shows up at Jim and Sara house claiming to be Jim daughter and has lived in house that he and Sara share with their two sons. Also claim he was married to Paula, a girl that died long before Rachael was born, how could that be possible. Well you will have to read this book to get the answers. I was thrilled to have won this book on Goodreads.

More twists and turns than The Road to Hana, Maui

Being an avid science fiction fan, I thought I had some idea of what was going on when Rachael shows up, claiming that Jim Moreau is her father by a mother who died before she was born. So starts the entertaining roller coaster ride.

Bruce Fottler is a fellow resident of my neck of the woods and frequents the same coffee shop as I. Which is how I happened to come across his novel, Chasing Redemption. So when I found Dover Park in the Kindle store, I bought it, hoping to find that lightning had struck twice. I'm happy to say, it did. I think you will enjoy this story.

The subject of this book is quite creepy: a teenager returns home and no-one recognizes her.
It reminded me of a story of Lovecraft.
It was different, but I still liked reading the book.

It was a pity the book took the viewpoint of the people of the house she re-entered. It took away quite a lot of the tension of the story.
The story is slow, too slow for my liking.
Then, when it gets faster, it gets too fast.

And the end is, I am sorry to say, downright unbelievable.

But before you reach that point, you have spent nice hours reading the book.

I enjoyed the book until it got to be that too many twists and turns were just that: too many twists and turns. I still enjoyed reading it. Putting yourself in the place of the man who has a daughter he knows he doesn't have, phone to come home and then show up at the family doorstep, defying all explanation, was certainly interesting to imagine. I won't give away anything else because it was still a good mystery.

This book is easy to read and I liked it. I thought it is just a good summer story because it was obvious what is happening. Well… It’s not. The last few chapters were really unexpected. Although you think you know all the characters well, you probably don’t. And that’s the best part.

This was an interesting book. I really enjoyed the mystery of it, and just when i thought i had it all figured out, it changed direction. The ending was definitely unexpected, and normally it would get extra points from me (because you don't see it coming), but at this instance i did not like the sudden change of direction. Personally i think that if it had ended 3-4 chapters before, it would have been better.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for a review.

Jim is a family man with a wife and two sons. He really wishes he could have a daughter, but so far, no luck. Brother Tom has two sons Jim is a bit jealous. Then Rachael appears almost out of nowhere and addresses Jim as “Dad.” How did this happen? Years in the past there was a non-sexual relationship between Jim and Paula, Rachael’s mom. Paula is dead, killed by someone unknown. But the reader will know who after reading this book. DNA tests prove that Jim is the father; he insists to his wife, Sara, that the DNA test is flawed. And the follow up DNA tests are flawed also. Good luck with that story.

So an ultimate mystery is the answer to the question of what will happen to Rachael (and anyone connected to her). There are several twists as the story develops but I am not one to reveal spoilers. I was quite surprised, and entertained, by the unpredictability in the way the story developed.

This is a story you have to stay with as it develops. It is easy to judge that a certain part is dull and then give up on the book. Chapter one has incredibly dull dialogue but it is absolutely necessary as a set up for what follows. By the end of Chapter 2, Rachael has appeared, but only as a voice on the telephone. By the end of Chapter 3, Rachael has physically shown up at Jim and Sara’s house, police have been called to solve the identity problem, and the reader has completed twenty five per cent of the book. It seems a bit slow up to this point, but, as before, all of this is necessary for what is to come.

This book has eleven chapters and an epilogue. The action starts to take off in chapter eight but the reader should not skip ahead. The author’s skill is in the creation of a complex background that serves as a rationale for the surprises in the latter half of the book. Some readers may be put off by what seems to become too much of a religious based dialogue, but this also is a part of some of the surprises.

There is not a lot of depth and subliminal stuff to think about and try to interpret, but there is so much going on at the surface level that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and fast read. I have encouraged my teenage son to read it.

Jim and Sara lead a quiet life with their two sons. Everything seems to be going well for them until Jim gets a mysterious call one day. The caller on the line is saying they are Jim's daughter. Jim is beside himself and can't explain the weird calls to his wife. There is a knock on the door one day and there stands a young girl who says her name is Rachel. She says she is Jim's daughter and seems to know a lot about the family. Who is this girl? Rachel is upset because Jim keeps denying he is her father. Rachel doesn't understand why the house she grew up in looks so different. She says she wants to come home and has nowhere else to go. Can you say bizarre? Where did Rachel come from? The story at this point takes a twist so unexpected that I had to read faster to see what was going to happen next.

As I started reading more of the story, I suddenly felt like I was reading a script from "The Twilight Zone." The author had me so engrossed in the book, I couldn't put it down. The characters are so well written and very convincing , I wasn't sure who was telling the truth at times. As Jim keeps everybody believing that Rachel is not his daughter, a new layer to the story unfolds. Will the real father please stand up?

I love a good mystery that has plots that follow a twisting road and this book is packed with twists and turns and layers of secrets that will blow you away. The story was drawing to a close when I suddenly realized that the author had brilliantly written a mystery so perfect that no one will ever see the end coming. The last few chapters will have you questioning who is really telling the truth? Be prepared for the explosive ending that was masterfully written with more then just a girl trying to reconnect to her father. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a mystery thriller. It is not your typical mystery where it is easy to figure out. It is a well crafted story that has everything that will have reader wanting to read more from this author.

This offering by Bruce Fottler concerns three related men and their families. Jim Moreau is a successful businessman working in R&D at a manufacturing concern, and his wife Sara and he have two boys, Kevin and Dylan, but long for a girl. That ship has sailed, as Sara recently underwent a hysterectomy.

Jim's brother Tom is a detective for a police department in a city nearby. Both Tom and Jim are somewhat dissatisfied with their jobs, and Jim is about to go into business with Andrew, their cousin, a plumber by trade.

Jim's world and plans are upset by the arrival of a girl who claims to be Jim's seventeen year old daughter Rachael, by a woman who drowned twenty-two years ago. She also claims that she's been living with Jim her entire life, and that his cousin Andrew murdered her mom and has spent the last twelve years in prison. But of course, none of that is possible. Or is it?

Rachael must be lying. The only other option is too incredible to believe - where Rachael is actually from another timeline, where the events she claims to have happened actually... did.

Jim and Tom work together to expose this girl for the hoax she must be, but each piece of evidence they examine makes her story more plausible. From the arrival of Rachael a couple chapters in until the unexpected ending, this book had me on the edge of my chair.

Content:
Violence: Minor.

Language: There are a few expletives in the book.

Sexual Content: Light. There is some sexual tension and innuendos passed back and forth among the men, and a reference to a possible incest attempt. PG.

Spiritual Content: Moderate. God is referenced as the reason why Rachael could have been transported across timelines to a better existence. Church is attended, but the faith of the main characters appears shallow and surface.

Bottom Line:
This book kept me up, and I finished the last half of it in one sitting. It's a page turner. I gave it five stars.

I won this book from a contest on Goodreads.

Jim & Sara Moreau are married and have two sons, Kevin and Dylan. Jim has a very mundane job that he'd like nothing more than to leave behind him and will do so with his cousin Alex, as they venture into a new business deal as partners. Jim's brother Tom and his wife Andrea have two young daughters and Jim is with the Police Department. One day as Jim was under the kitchen sink working out a plumbing problem, a strange teenage girl walks into their home and address Jim as 'Dad', much to his and Sara's total shock. Jim was stunned at the uncanny resemblance 'Rachael' has to an old close friend of his from the past who had died a tragic death years earlier. Sara couldn't help but notice some of Rachael's facial features looked eerily like her husbands. But Rachael's frustration mounted with each denial from Jim that he could not be her father as her mother 'Paula' had died several years before her birth. Although she knew intimate details of the past, nonetheless, her I.D., although authentic, details did not match. It was as if Rachael's had come from another universe where she lived with her drunken father, Jim after her mother passed and then her universe collided with present day Jim's. So many questions, with so few answers. But as Jim's brother Tom began his 'secretive' search for those answers, even stranger questions began to surface. Could this really be divine intervention? After all, God does work in mysterious ways.

Author, Bruce Fottler is definitely one I will be closely following. He just gives you some line then slowly reels you in, bit by bit, and then 'BAM' -- it's like a punch in the gut that takes the wind right out of you! Wow!

Dover Park by Bruce Fottler

Wow! This is the second book I have read by Mr. Fottler and it most definitely will not be my last. He is one of my new favorite authors! I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
According to the Amazon description: “Troubling secrets are about to surface in Dover Park. On the eve of summer, a mysterious visitor turns up in a quiet, suburban town. The very existence of this enigmatic presence is a paradox, one that upends the idyllic lives of the Moreaus, a well-respected family of the community. Unsettling revelations are made surrounding a tragic accident that occurred many years ago, and routing out the truth threatens to tear the Moreaus apart. Was the drowning of a close friend in Dover Park an accident...or not?”
I don’t recall reading a book that had more twists and turns than this one. Just when I expected one thing was happening Mr Fottler threw in a curve ball and the story went another direction. Just when I thought everything was solved at the end (spoiler alert) the story goes another direction. Oh My!!! How many complications or rather turns in the story line, can occur in one novel; obviously at least three or four. I started this book last night and finished this morning. If I had started it earlier in the day I would have finished it in one sitting. Once the first curve was thrown at me I couldn’t wait to find out where Mr. Fottler was going with it. I was never disappointed. Several times he could have ended the story and I would have been satisfied but I love what he finally did with it. You will too!

I received this book as a Member’s Giveaway from LibraryThing.

This is the first book I have read by Bruce Fottler. At the beginning, the Moreaus seems to be a normal family. But then comes the twists and turns. I couldn’t keep the book down. I read the entire book in one sitting.
As you proceed through the book, the mystery keeps on deepening and it is really difficult to figure out what the truth actually is. Most of the times, by the time at the end of the book , I figure out what might be the mystery. This book I couldn’t figure out the mystery till the end. At one point, I actually thought the book was going to turn in to either a science fiction or supernatural novel. And I was really surprised the way it turned out.

Coming to the author, I like his writing style. The flow of the novel is good and it keeps you interested. There is not one dull moment in the book. It lives upto its genre. The author has not dragged the novel on and on with unnecessary details just to add pages to the book. The pace is comfortable and easy to follow. I liked the way the author has built up the characters in this book. Instead of giving lengthy descriptions, you are introduced to their personalities via their conversations.

Overall…an amazing book to read… I would look forward reading more books from this author. It’s been a long time since I read a mystery/thriller novel since recently not many could have lived up to its genre. But this novel has gotten me again interested in the genre and I thank the author for that.

This is the second book by Bruce Fottler that I have read and as the first one I can only say - a great book! It starts with what seems to be a typical family - Jim, the father, his wife Sara and their two sons. Suddenly a girl called Rachel appears, claiming to be Jim's daughter. She allegedly remembers things about her life with Jim that couldn't possibly be true. Who is she and how come she is so convincing? The author slowly guides us through the story, first at very slow pace and then there are suddenly so many incredible twists and turns.
Bruce Fottler is an amazing writer. His characters seem so real and so easy to relate to. I even love the fact that he spends so much time on unimportant details since they really bring in a touch of reality. For example, his characters do actually cook decent meals, use the bathroom from time to time and chit-chat.
I recommend this book for all those who love mysteries, interesting plots and unexpected twists!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What has occurred in Dover Park twenty years ago? How does it all become entangled in the lives of the people presently living very normal quiet lives in and around the Park? Fottler has created a book that is very difficult to put down until the very end and in some cases may leave you wanting more.

What happens to a family when an unknown girl shows up claiming to be the daughter of the man of the house? She know so much about the family and they know so little about her. No one knows who she is or where she came from to intrude on their lives. Are there members of the family that have secrets that they are not revealing to the others? As one reads the story one is reminded of the TV show Outer Limits. Maybe there is a parallel universe out there.

Fottler has woven a story that will suck you and and then through twists and turns almost leave you breathless. It is a book that leaves you wanting more and I plan on looking into the others that Mr. Fottler has written. An excellent read.

Bruce Fottler's Dover Park is a ride! If you like twists, this one is a roller-coaster.

For me, the exposition was a little hard to follow. I found it a bit rushed and it was tricky to keep the characters straight in my mind. But by the second chapter, I was hooked, and could hardly stop reading.

Can there be too many plot twists? I suppose each reader must answer that for him or her self. But you'll never know if you don't grab a copy and read it.

I received this book free through the Members Giveaway on LibraryThing. This book kept you thinking with all the plot twists and turns. Until the end of the book, you still didn't know all that was going to happen. It was a great story that really kept the reader's interest from beginning to end. It was a mix of science fiction, mystery, and espionage all in one place. It not only keeps a reading guessing, but keeps their interest at the same time. It makes a reader wonder if this could still be happening today.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I LOVED it. What made it AWESOME was the twist!! Oh man the twist. I mean this is really good. You are into the book and thinking oh this is good then BAM a twist and if that twist isn't good enough BOOM another twist!

A girl appears and swears she is your daughter by someone who you knew but died before this person could have ever been born. How is this possible?? Read and find out and then read some more! FANTASTIC!!

The Moreau's are well-respected members of their community. Their lives are happy and peaceful. But a mysterious visitor will change all of that. While trying to find answers for this person's sudden appearance, a decades-old drowning is looked at a little closer and will lead to shocking discoveries.

This book is filled with mystery and twists. It kept me guessing until the end and I wasn't disappointed.

This book had a few twists near the end. The finale was not what I was expecting at all as most of the book had led me to believe the ending to be something completely different. Worth reading.
