“He hoped she saw the final look in his eyes. His promise that, even if death loomed between them, Mora would never be rid of him. Not truly.”
The crown has fallen and Mora falls with it, trapped and cursed in the face of Dother’s death. Unable to escape what he’s done. Stuck with her new Keeper, Castellan, a King's Guard determined to use his wishes to save the Halflings, Mora stands begrudgingly by his side in the face of a revolt... and learns just how monstrous she can be.
In her dreams, Mora finds solace in the arms of a Fae she should despise, a male who soothes her broken spirit and stokes her desire. All while Zadriel wakes to Mora's scent saturating his clothes. Yearning to be with her yet knowing they can never truly be together.
As Berwick burns, a greater evil looms, and Mora’s royal blood makes her a pawn in a new game of crowns and wishes. A game that demands far more than her cunning. Because saving the Halflings means sacrificing what little freedom she has left, and Mora can’t decide which is more desirable... duty or the ever-tempting lure of her rage.
Revolt is an adult dark fantasy romance and a prequel to Wish, taking place immediately after Dother's death. It is intended to be read as the second book in the Onyx Mist Series. This series is full of magic, feminine rage, morally grey characters, and a swoon-worthy fated mates romance, with monstrous villains you’ll wish you could end yourself.
Please note Revolt contains mature themes, explicit content, and dark elements. It is intended for an adult audience; read at your own discretion. Trigger warnings are linked in the e-book. This is the second book in a dark fantasy romance series.

A huge thank you to Sara for providing me with the incredible opportunity to be a beta reader for Revolt. I’m so grateful to be a part of the journey!
Revolt. Was. Beautiful. It’s a prequel to the events in Wish, helping us navigate and understand the events that unfold immediately after Cillian’s death. Wish’s primary timeline is 300 years after his death. One of the things I adored about Wish was Sara’s ability to provide us with two different timelines of events, and we are treated to this again in Revolt. Whilst we follow Zadriel and Mora in the wake of Dother’s death, we also get to see Aedlin’s journey between the death of her beloved Kaylan and Cillain’s death. Sara seamlessly weaves the two timelines together and they compliment each other so well, not only providing key answers to some of the questions raised in Wish, but also providing us a more in depth look at Aedlin’s POV. It really helps in making Aedlin so much more human and relatable, as our perspective of her in Wish is through Mora’s eyes, who understandably has very complex feelings about their last memories together.
If such a thing is even possible, I loved Revolt even more than Wish. Sara’s writing is so beautiful, her characters so real and relatable that you feel their emotions as your own. Mora’s rage and fear following the severe trauma she’s experienced at Cillian’s hands, and Zadriel’s shame and self loathing from his treatment and life under Brennan’s rule. In Revolt we see them when much of this trauma is much closer to the surface, especially for Mora, whose vulnerability is so raw and potent it broke my heart all over again.
One of the joys of Revolt is that we also get to see Mora and Zadriel find a comfort and safety in each other at such a critical time for them both. It’s on such a subconscious level where they feel there are no consequences that they just allow themselves to be together as their mate bond should be, connecting the two of them so effortlessly that their interactions were such a genuine joy to read and watch develop.
Whilst I’m avoiding crucial spoilers, I also just felt that Revolt just gave me such an improved understanding of the stunning and complex world Sara has created. So many puzzle pieces slot into place and there were many ‘OH THAT’S WHY’ moments! The lore, the world, the magic, the plot, everything is just constructed so carefully and you get to these conclusions and reveals right at the point where Sara wants you to and although it must have taken so much hard work on her part to make it work, as a reader, we’re able to connect the dots and build on everything at the right pace.
Of course, Sara still has many tricks up her sleeves and as you read, there are more questions that you want answers for and more puzzles to solve! Revolt is an absolute masterpiece and Mora continues to be one of my favourite ever FMCs - she’s beautiful, kind and funny, yet also flawed and cruel. She’s a survivor. She’s experienced such terrible trauma but she still holds onto pieces of her humanity. Still feels remorseful. Ever defiant in the face of a man that seeks to break and own her. How could I not love her?! If anything, Revolt has only tightened the grip that Mora and her story has on my heart and soul and I’m never letting her go.
I ate Wish up like a demon, spamming @sara DMs with my anguish, pain and female rage non stop for days and days and days, and clearly that worked a treat because she asked me to Beta read Revolt once I’d finished which is an honour beyond all honours.
Revolt picks up immediately in the aftermath of Mora’s defining moment from Wish, rather than at the conclusion of Wish itself, affording us a rare opportunity to experience the trauma that she and Zadriel both experienced before their hearts found one another, as if predestined. That is to say, Revolt is yet another opportunity for Sara to paint a portrait of complex characters, who have been controlled, consumed and twisted until they’re beyond recognition from the people they believed themselves to be, put them through hell, and cut me deep in the process - and I enjoyed every second of it so I suppose that makes me the problem. Whilst that may sound heavy, and believe me it is, there are moments of beauty, magic and romance scattered amongst these pages like gold dust; moments where Mora and Zadriel find solace in one another in the space between their nightmares, and realise that their homes, now destroyed, exist with each other, and not in the ashes bricks, and dust, leaves and trees.
Revolt is a staggering feat, a breathtaking achievement from Flanagan and a nuanced analysis of trauma, healing, self loathing and fear, wrapped in a story of true love that will beat your heart bloody in the telling of it.
First off, a huge thank you to Sara for allowing me to beta read Revolt — truly an honor.
Reading Wish introduced me to Mora, and I was not disappointed. She’s strong, resourceful, and cunning (or a female Damon Salvatore for my “The Vampire Diaries” friends). The series of events that lead to her wish granting abilities was already tragic in and of itself, but the real heartbreak unfurled in Revolt. We learned even more about the demons that plague her and the traumatic events that created this new version of her. Anyone who has experienced traumatic events can empathize with her — I’ve never wanted to give a mother’s hug to an FMC so desperately than I did with Mora. Sara does a phenomenal job of creating depth, complexity, and structure to her characters while also building fantastical worlds you could get lost in. Revolt is a testament to her commitment to building characters that won’t soon leave you and the depth of love and sadness you thought you could feel go even deeper. I’m looking forward to book three knowing I have an even deeper connection to Mora and Zadriel (and a deeper disdain for Dother).
Thank you to Sara Flanagan for the opportunity to read an ARC of Revolt.
I'm a fast reader. A book usually lasts 1-2 days. This one tortured me for a week. The anxiety, the twists, the turns, the injustice, the betrayals. Utterly, awfully consuming.
I loved it.
Obviously, as a prequel, Revolt's job is to completely reframe what you thought you knew after Wish. But I wasn't prepared for how much of a journey that would be!
Characters I thought I understood suddenly became infinitely more complex. Mora, in particular, transforms from the vengeful force we met in book one into someone whose rage makes so much more heartbreaking sense. Watching her become the woman we meet in book one shaped by impossible choices and deep betrayals was devastating. And I don't really know how to talk about Zade's journey without wandering straight into spoiler territory, so I'll just say this: Sara has an alarming talent for taking characters you already love, handing you the devastating backstory that explains exactly why they became who they are... and somehow making it hurt even more than it already did.
I'm also a sucker for non-linear storytelling, and Revolt absolutely leans into it. There were a few moments where scenes moved so quickly that I found myself going back a page or two to make sure I hadn't missed something, which is the only reason this isn't quite a five-star read. But in saying that, that pacing helped the non-linear stlye of story-telling to bleed into each page, more than just the time shifts in chapters, which I felt helped Mora's failing grip on reality feel much more fragile.
I also have to talk about the romance because I am, quite frankly, a professional fated mates hater. It's probably my least favourite romantasy trope because it's so often used to shortcut the difficult work of building trust and emotional intimacy in relationships, removing agency. Sara takes what we so often see from fated mates and really deepens it without letting it become the focal point of the story. Instead of removing agency, More and Zade's bond complicates everything by the end. It fluidly shifts from being another source of conflict, to tenderness and safety, to pain and betrayal, allowing it to become a tool for us to better understand the characters, their reactions and their reasons for acting the way they do in Wish, rather than a simplification of why they might be connected.
Re-reading Wish is going to be a WHOLE different experience. There are so many moments that now carry an entirely different weight, and I can already tell future me is going to love every second of it in a completely different way.
Which, seeing as I now have to wait for book three, is probably exactly what I'll be doing.
I'm equal parts delighted, emotionally compromised, and mildly annoyed that it's over.
Sara... respectfully... please hurry up. But also, THANK YOU again. My heart is delightfully bruised.
Wow does this hurt in the heat of ways. This story is simultaneously beautiful and devastating.
This book made me think of Wish in an entirely new way. We get to see more of the past in new ways, and while we had glimpses of the past in Wish, Revolt really shows us each moment that led to our characters being the way that they are. I found myself repeatedly wanting to hug and comfort both Mora and Zadriel. They endure so much that I wish I could save them from over and over again.
As much as it hurt, I loved seeing more of Zadriel and his past. We have a pretty good idea of who he is in Wish, but this book completely blew my understanding of him out of the water. He’s so much more complex and has endured so much more than I ever thought. I definitely will see him in a totally different light after the events of this book.
I already felt so broken for Mora, but her story is even more brutal than I thought. She truly deserves every moment of rage and revenge that she feels in Wish. I wish she didn’t have to feel this way, but I’m glad that she was able to take what has happened to her and turn it into rage rather than letting it win.
This story is so much darker, grittier, epic, and devastating than Wish. I thought Wish was exceptional, but it’s nothing compared to Revolt.
I would also like to note that I’m typically a massive hater of fated mates. Ask anyone who knows me well, and they’ll tell you it’s my least favorite because I always feel like the romance is rushed and we end up with more of an insta lust situation. I don’t even remotely feel this way about the bond between Mora and Zadriel. I wish other books with fated mates followed their lead. Their relationship feels so real and authentic, and I never once felt like it was rushed. Sara did an exceptional job of writing this trope.
Thank you so much to Sara Flanagan for an arc of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Onyx Mist series is so much more than a story of a girl trapped by binding magic at the hands of cruel masters; it is a story of beautifully executed characters, plot, and setting, one that will make you forget you are reading and portal you somewhere else.
I started this unforgettable journey with Wish, Book 1, and now I'm back in this universe with its prequel, Revolt. And believe me when I say this: there isn't a title more suitable for this book than Revolt. Revolt of one's heart and soul, revolt as a means to fight back and stand up for yourself. Revolt as a way to protect what you feel is right. Revolt as a way to try, make mistakes, and get back up.
Revolt is more than a prequel; it's an insight. A deep, thorough insight into the deepest, blackest parts of the characters' souls. Revolt is a journey, one that opens new doors and new perspectives. One that explains why we ended where we did, making it even more heartbreaking. Revolt is a shattering, ruinous experience, and still, I would do it all again and again and again, because this story deserves it.
Mora deserves it, so we can comprehend the depths of her rage and her despair intertwined. Zadriel does, so we can truly see him and his suffering in all its hopelessness. Aedlin does, too, so we can understand the choices that carved the path for future generations. Even Dother does, so we can truly understand what makes him a villain we despise with our entire being.
And finally, Sara and her Onyx Mist series deserve it, so we can celebrate her devastatingly beautiful writing and so we can offer the series the recognition it deserves.
Thank you, Sara, for gifting me an early copy of Revolt. Thank you for letting me accompany you on this journey. Thank you.
Revolt had everything Wish had and more. More trauma, more heart ache, more heartbreak, new villains, BETRAYL, more story, and more lore. More lore and story on the Mother Tree, Vehsa, Zadriel, Aedlin, and Castellans war that Mora mentions in Wish.
I feel this is important to note, Revolt is the PREQUEL to Wish that is supposed to be read after Wish because it fills in some of the gaps that we see when going back 300 years in Wish. It picks up the aftermath of what happens after the crow has fallen and also goes back to when Cillian Dother is planning to take over and become King. The book also has Adelin's POV as well and I love that Sara gave us her POV. I loved getting to know more about her character and what was going on, on her end of things that Mora didn't know about.
Some of the tropes and themes in Revolt include but are not limited too in the series: Feminine rage Burnt cinnamon roll MMC Shared dreams Yearning Angst Shadow mommy FMC Monstruous Villain who will never let her go Fae bargains and vows Deep magic lore He falls first Gallant knights and swoon worthy rogues And so much more
Two of my favorite quotes from Revolt:
" You will fall, darling heart. You will falter. There will be times when hope is all but lost. Do not fault yourself for tumbling into the darkness: there is no shame in hiding in its embrace while you find your strength again. But know that you will. When you understand your truth. You will rise, and it shall be glorious."
" I see you little witch. One day, I hope you see me too."
Thank you so much Sara Flanagan for allowing me arc access to Revolt in the Onyx Mist series. This is book 2 in the series so if you haven’t read the first book RUN don’t WALK!
This book was by far a five star read! If you like dark fantasy/romance this is the book for you!
Mora and Zadriels journeys are brutally tragic and makes you fall even more in love with their character development. Mora’s grief, rage and vengeance shape every page while she fights her own inner demons. Zadriel keeps the tension tight and keeps the reader yearning for more. To give you a little teaser on what to see from these two “our souls will find their way home, even if it’s only in dreams” 🫠
The world building was beautiful, and can we talk about the incredible character art that depicts the characters in immaculate detail?! While reading I could practically see them in every vivid detail 🔥
Sara has yet again outdone herself with the continuation of this series and I can only expect great things to come from here on out! As Revolt has taught me that sometimes the greatest battles are the ones taught within myself (I feel like I’ve heard this from my therapist once…) 😅
Now if you’ll excuse me.. I’ll be impatiently waiting for the next book to release while crying over this series not being finished yet 😭
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Just when you think you couldn’t hate Dother anymore, Sara just knows how to make a villain truly despicable in Revolt, Book 2 in the Onyx Mist series and a prequel to Wish.
In this book we get to see the aftermath of Dother’s demise and the years leading up to it. We learn some interesting truths and I am interested to see how it plays out in future books.
Our rage filled Mora was devastatingly beautiful and haunted by Dother. With everything she has had to endure she is understandably brutal but we see her struggle with the “monster” she has become at the hands of Dother. She doesn’t like who she has had to become but finds relief in her dreams of a mysterious Fae.
Oh but our mysterious Fae is Zadriel and the way he longs for Mora is so swoonworthy. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe even if the means keeping as far away from her as possible as he suffers from the curse that was placed upon him to the Dother line. Zadriel struggles with his familial relationship and the past actions haunting him.
We get to see some POV from Mora’s mother Aedlin and the choices she had to make and suffer with by marrying Dother.
Everyone is out to use Mora for their benefit and Zadriel will do what he must in order to protect her from afar. After the truths are revealed, I cannot wait to see how this history plays out in their futures.
It’s been a while since I last read Wish (book 1)—about two years ago! So, when I picked this one up, I thought it was the sequel continuing right after the ending of book 1. Turns out, after a few confusing chapters, I checked Goodreads and realized this second book is actually a prequel……….
I really loved Wish—Mora is such a strong FMC, and her chemistry with Zadriel was delightful. That’s why I was excited to dive back in. But since this story has a bunch of new characters (most of whom don’t even appear in book 1), I found myself less invested. The alternating timelines also made things a bit tricky to follow, and I sometimes lost track of what was happening in each thread.
Because of that, I struggled to stay in the mood for reading. Personally, I feel this prequel could have worked better as a shorter novella rather than a full-length book—it just felt a little stretched out for me.
I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed since I was expecting Mora and Zadriel’s story to continue. Still, I’m looking forward to picking up the series again once the “real” book 2 comes out, because I definitely want to see where their journey goes next.
I received a review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!

Revolt is a prequel in the Onyx Mist series, but is designed to be read after book one. This is a DARK fantasy romance so please review the content warnings. I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to the author for my eArc.
Tropes and themes include: ✨Fairytale reimagining - Aladdin inspired ✨Fated mates (but she doesn’t know) ✨Burnt cinnamon roll MMC ✨Feminine rage ✨All the yearning ✨Shared dreams ✨Shadow mommy FMC ✨Angsty
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars 3/5 Flames Nicknames: Little Witch, Treasure
The Lovely: Owe! Owe! Owe! My heart is hurting for Zadriel and Mora. Again. Whereas Mora seemed more vengeful in book one, her trauma is closer to the surface and she felt more vulnerable to me in this book. Zadriel is the only person that is there for her, even as he tries to terms with his own trauma. Really, they’re both emotional messes in the best way possible. But, that still means it hurts.
Recommendation: While a full-length prequel, please keep in mind this is intended to be read after Wish (book one). I promise it will make more sense in this order. If you’re in the mood for a dark fantasy romance heavy on the angst and yearning, I think you would love this book.
I'm so excited to dive back into this world. There are multiple POVS in this book, just like in Wish. While I love the fact that we get new and important information about Zadriel, Mora, Cillian, and Aedlin, I got a bit lost in the back and forth timelines. Mora seems to be struggling with her new reality, her pent-up anger and how to use her rage against her Keepers. She's not able to trust anyone or their motives, so she's been manipulating a wish's limitations and guidelines. Mora is essentially learning what it means to be a villain. The insight into Zadriel and Cillian's bond was interesting. The more we learn, the more this tale pulls at your heart strings. There are so many secrets and messed up situations throughout this story. The hopelessness that all the characters seem to exhibit, is gut wrenching. I've been a bit frustrated with Mora and Zadriel. They're still clinging to who they were before people tried to destroy them, instead of embracing the monsters they've both become. It's hard watching them struggle to belong in a world that hates, fears, and uses them. I did feel like we got more of Zadriel's story this time around. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
Had to dnf. I just couldn't get into this book and that was a bummer because I really enjoyed book 1. It started off really confusing to me because I didn't realize it was a prequel and not a follow up from book 1. It's basically what happened right after Dother died and then before he died. It kept switching timelines throughout the story and that was hard to get into for me personally.
I was also really confused because Mora's mother Aedlin (the queen) died in chapter 4 (the present timeline for this book), but then in chapter 8 (still the present), the queen was alive in a carriage with her and Dother's son. What?
I also didn't care about Aedlin's pov before Dother's death. It wasn't needed imo because she was dead in the present timeline already.
Overall, I personally wish this book was integrated with book one (specifically the Mora and Zadriel chapters) and that there was an actual book two that was a direct follow up from what happened at the end of book one. I don't think this needed to be its own book and it was kinda poor planning on the authors end with how book was was written. Parts of book one in the beginning could have been removed and parts of this backstory should have been integrated instead.

Lol, como se dice "ouch! That hurt my feelings!"? 🥲 but act ally seriously, this book was trauma and chaos and feeling seen in equal measures. Prequel to Wish, but truly I recommend reading Wish first because you will be emotionally fucked UP when you reflect on Mora throughout Revolt.
The darkness is immeasurably deeper in this mournful and haunting tale. Shit is bleak my dudes, but peppered with tiny beacons of surreal hope and comfort. Mora, my poor Mora.. do not be afraid, dear reader, that the bad guys face no repercussions, oh no. No no no. Mora's development into the vicious delicious creature of wrath in Wish reveals itself in brutal black and white.
And just when you think you've got it all figured out, pinned down who your traitors are and uncovered all the treachery, BAM. The real plot twist begins. Just enough to make the starvation for book 3 already chafe.
Divine 😈
I haven't felt this *seen* in a very, very long time. This one is especially for my rage-filled women, anger as a weapon/self defense women, and women just plain tired of the men. Bon appetit. Eat well, beauties. Avenge our queen.
*ARC READER* A huge thank you to Sara for letting me be an ARC reader on this one!
Sara did an amazing job with this second book. I suppose going in, I didn't quite realize that it was a prequel to the first one. And after quite a cliffhanger, I was ready to get right into book two. This did NOT disappoint at all! Mora, our FMC, has been through it. Through book one, we see how she becomes the embodiment of feminine rage. Book two shows us a deeper dive into all the things she experiences right before and right after the death of Dother. I really loved that we got to see the multiple POVs following Mora, Zadriel, and Aedlin. I was on the EDGE OF MY SEAT the entire time. Especially at the end. I am not typically one that foreshadows much but watching all the pieces come together and everything beginning to make sense... I CANNOT wait for the next book. I am so excited to see what's next for our characters. I can't recommend this book enough.
Again, thank you Sara for letting me read your book and give an honest review!
Revolt is a prequel to Wish. It’s a non-linear timeline telling the events before and after the death of Dother. Multi POV following multiple characters with flashbacks, memories, and an ending that put Wish into a clearer light.
Revolt shows how after disasters and even blessings the politics and back stabbing still lerk in the shadows. The final chapters had me gasping at revelations and revealed truths. Learning who to trust and where to put your beliefs is a slippery slope that is only learned with betrayal and Mora is learning.
If you have already read Wish, this fills in some back story and character development. If you haven’t read Wish yet and you decide to read Revolt first, there won’t be any big spoilers other than the flashbacks from Mora in Wish that detail what happened before she became who she was.
✨Firstly I want to thank Sara for the amazing opportunity to be gifted an ARC of this book , all opinions are my own✨
I will never look at the colour ‘Azure’ again and not think of Dother…
REVOLT somehow managed to raise the stakes even higher than Wish. Sara Flanagan delivers a story full of heartbreak, impossible choices, and twists I genuinely didn’t see coming.
Mora’s journey was the standout for me. Watching her grief, anger, and determination shape her into the woman she becomes in the future this is one of my favourite examples of feminine rage in romantasy. Every decision has real consequences, and no one ever feels truly safe.
The world-building expands beautifully, the relationships become even more complex, and the slow-burn romance had me completely invested.
That ending left me speechless, and I’ll be counting down the days until the next book. If you loved Wish, you’ll love Revolt even more.
First I want to thank Sara Flanagan for this advance reader copy of Revolt, publishing on August 4th, 2026.
This is the 2nd book in a planned quartet series and I have to say while I enjoyed this follow up, it reads very much like a 2nd book in a series. There is a TON of back story and time jumping that did make it somewhat monotonous at times. We also do not get resolution or any kind of follow up to the cliffhanger in book 1.
But the romance between Zadriel and Mora absolutely made it all worth it. The dreams they share are so heartwarming (and heartbreaking at the same time) that you just keep pushing to read those next chapters where they finally get to reunite with each other. His yearning for her is just tragic, we already know they reunite several years later from what we've learned in book 1 but seeing the suffering first hand us just ugg. I need these two to have their happy ending desperately after everything they've endured.
Wish was one of my favorite books of all time so being given an opportunity to be a arc reader felt like a dream I couldn't wait to read it and I wasn't disappointed this is the back story I didn't know I wanted a look behind the certain on how we got to the story of mora I don't want to spoil anything so it's hard to rant and rave about my favorite and most hated moments it it's so deeply emotional in to many ways to count it's hard to be shocked on a prequel story considering you already know the outcome but I can say without a doubt to some of this I was truly shocked and a lot of it was hard to swallow it is dark like pretty dark so I would definitely check your triggers get your tissues and whatever emotional support items you use because this is definitely a wild ride
5 stars for character development! This is a prequel to Wish, well sorta….. If you have read Wish you now there are flip flopping timelines. There are also flip flopping timelines in this book but the majority of the book is based during the time period immediately after the fall of a certain King and Queen, following several different POVs. This book for me very heavily emphasizes character development, the readers get to learn about the intricacies and emotional turmoil of the decisions/circumstances surrounding Zadriel. The trauma damage that Mora experiences is so intense, it is soul crushing. I was overall so pleased with where the author took this story, it made me love these damaged characters even more.
Thank you to Sara and team for providing me with a copy of this book.
I read books one and two back to back and I loved Revolt even more than Wish.
As a prequel to Wish, Revolt takes us into the aftermath of Dother’s death while also exploring the years leading up to it. While I expected the story to pick up where Wish left off, the alternating timelines and influx of new characters took a little getting used to.
At times, the pacing felt slow and I found myself losing track of which timeline I was in. That being said, I enjoyed the POVs in this book more than in Wish. In the first book I questioned why we were getting certain POVs but in the second book, it made sense.
This book was so much emotional damage. Knowing what happens in Wish.. Pure emotional damage. Zadriel's story broke my heart in Wish and now it's even more in pieces 😭
The world building and characters - beautiful! The kinda of secrecy through the whole book - captivating! I couldn't but this book down. Loved the timeline jumps, you never knew what came next. And the end results... OMG I was angry!! Even tho I kinda guessed it.
"Find your Heart and when the time comes, take back what was given."
First of all I would like to thank Sara for gifting me her beautiful ARC.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5/5)
Revolt is exactly the kind of prequel I love it doesn’t just fill in the gaps, it completely reshapes how you view the events of Wish.
Following Mora after the devastating events that changed her forever, we see her trapped by Dother’s curse, drowning in trauma, and clinging to the only peace she can find: the mysterious Fae male who visits her dreams. Watching her descent into the woman we meet in Wish was heartbreaking, and Sara Flanagan does an incredible job of showing that every choice, every loss, and every betrayal slowly chips away at Mora until you truly understand her rage.
I also loved finally getting Zadriel’s perspective. He’s such a genuinely kind soul who is constantly forced into impossible situations by duty and the corrupted bond tying him to Dother’s bloodline. Knowing how desperately he longs for Mora while believing they can never truly be together made every near encounter between them ache with longing. The fated mates tension was absolutely delicious, especially knowing how close fate brings them before cruelly pulling them apart again.
“You’re mine too, Little Witch, until the last star falls from the sky, even if I never lay eyes on you again.”
One of the biggest strengths of this book is how much it expands the world. So many questions left lingering after Wish are answered here, and the political intrigue, the Halfling revolt, and the history behind the kingdom all add so much depth to the series. Rather than feeling like a side story, Revolt feels essential.
Overall, Revolt is a beautifully tragic, emotional prequel filled with feminine rage, heartbreaking romance, and morally grey characters that leave you wanting more. It made me appreciate Wish even more, and I honestly can’t imagine reading the series without it. If you loved book one, don’t skip this—it gives Mora and Zadriel’s story so much more weight, and I can’t wait to see where the Onyx Mist series goes next.
This book took me on such a ride. It hurt my soul, it made me laugh, it made me kick my feet, and it had me hooked from the very first page. Sara has a beautiful way with words and knows just how to tell a captivating story with all the emotions.
Mora is, as we already know from book 1, such a strong FMC, and that doesn't change in this book. She goes THROUGH it, but she doesn't let this world defeat her. And our boy, Zadriel. Ugh, he's just something else. He would do absolutely anything for our girl, and what those things are? You have to read the book to find out ;)
We follow Mora and Zadriel immediately following Dother's crowning and see how their paths intertwine during that time. We also get a new understanding of Mora's plight and why she makes certain decisions in Wish. A full prequel as a book 2 was such a smart move for Flanagan, in my opinion, as we see how events, though hundreds of years apart, draw parallels to our main characters. The original sins and the fight to not repeat the past give the reader a deeper understanding of Mora and Zadriel.
I received an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sara, thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book early! It has been a privilege! Wish was one of my favorite reads of 2025, and this is a favorite read so far of 2026!! I love these characters so much, I have been dying for more of them and this was perfect! I love Mora, she is such a badass! I enjoyed being back in this world with these characters and Sara’s writing so much! I loved getting to know the before! Revolt truly shows us what our favorite characters had to experience before we met them in Wish, and I think that was the most amazing way to write their story!
After reading Wish, which I kept in my Amazon library just to keep coming back to and checking on when this book would come out, I can’t even finish it. Wish left off on somewhat of a cliffhanger, which would be fine if the second book continued the story but instead we get this really annoying dual point of view of the past and I got through a couple chapters before I said no thank you, not what I wanted in a sequel so if you’re looking for a sequel this ain’t it folks.
Once I figured out this was a prequel, I enjoyed this book much more. …But it took me a long time to realize that, as I don’t think it was clearly presented as such. I kept going back to re-read Wish to see if that would help, but I was just very lost in regard to where I was supposed to be in the timeline. That being said, Revolt truly added great depth to the series and is definitely required reading. This story spans centuries and there are driving plot elements here.
I am so grateful to have been provided an arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, what a ride. This was a rollercoaster of a book. I was a bit intimidated of the timeline flashbacks initially but the storyline flowed together so well it only enhanced the overall story. And that last 20% had me completely locked in! I love a good villain we all love to hate and man, did this book deliver. Eagerly awaiting books 3&4.
