Havoc

The nitty-gritty: A thrilling space adventure with colorful, complex characters and non-stop action and danger, Havoc is the perfect wrap-up to Constance Fay’s addictive sci-fi romance series.
And so with Havoc, the adventures of the crew of the Calamity and their significant others come to a close, sadly. I have enjoyed this series so much, and all four books have been strong from start to finish. I would recommend reading the books in order, because you’ll pick up on all the world-building and character development along the way, making it a richer reading experience. Plus you wouldn’t want to miss a moment of these characters’ adventures!
Each book in the series follows one of the Calamity crew members and their romantic partners, and each one focuses on a specific space adventure. In Calamity, we followed the Calamity’s captain, Temper, who meets and falls for Arcadio Escajeda. Fiasco follows Cyn, a bounty hunter, and the Calamity’s medic Micah. And in Chaos, ship’s engineer Caro takes the reins, and she meets super solider Levi while trying to break someone out of a prison.
In Havoc, the main character is Itzel, a woman I was immediately drawn to in the first book. Itzel is a Voidian assassin for a religious cult, taking orders from her goddess when someone needs to be killed—until the day she killed the wrong person and was kicked out of the monastery. Ever since, she’s been part of Calamity’s crew, but she still fervently believes in her religion and wants nothing more than to be taken back in.
One day she’s approached by one of the Voidian acolytes who offers her one last job. In exchange, the order will hand over information about Itzel’s parents, who she’s been searching for for years. The job is to assassinate Lucian Chandra, one of the heads of the powerful Chandra Family, and conveniently, he’ll be at the upcoming Family Summit for the trial of the Pierce Family, one of the most dangerous and corrupt families in the solar system. But then Itzel realizes who Lucien is—the kind, sexy man she met years ago when her last job for the goddess went wrong.
As Itzel tries to come to terms with killing the man she’s been longing for all these years, while staying true to her beliefs at the same time, bad things are happening behind the scenes at the Summit. And when the trial takes a turn for the deadly, Itzel and Lucien must work together to help save their friends and stop a deadly new lifeform from destroying the world.
Havoc is nicely balanced, with plenty of exciting action, nice character development, a bit of spice, and lots of fun banter. The characters are often in terrible danger, and the high stakes made this a quick read. But even with all the threats against Itzel, Lucien and the others, this is a “happily ever after” series, so you know everything is going to work out in the end.
Fay delves a bit deeper into the world building too. In the first book, the idea of the Five Families, the ones at the top of the food chain who set the rules for everyone else, wasn’t completely explained, and the author has been expanding that idea over the course of all four books. In Havoc, the destructive results of these families having too much power really hit home. The Pierce family has always been slimy, and it’s finally time for them to be tried for their horrible actions over the years. Of course, things don’t go the way they should, which is why this series is so much fun.
I loved following Itzel and Lucien and their burgeoning romance. Itzel is such an interesting character. She’s a deadly assassin who has been trained since she was very young, but when she meets Lucien, she begins to question the morality of killing, something she’s never thought about before. Lucien is a calm, sweet man, despite the status of his family, and he’s the perfect partner for Itzel. Itzel nevers lets herself get emotionally involved with her partners, but Lucien is different and you can see her opinions about relationships changing the more time they spend together.
The couples from the previous three books all get some page time too. It was nice to see their relationships are still going strong, but I also loved that they still have to work through issues, no matter how much they love each other. Fay also tackles Temper’s fraught relationship with her brother Frederick, who kicked her out of the Reed family after what he thought was a betrayal. In Havoc they are forced to work together, but the undercurrent of hate that they feel for each other is still there, causing lots of emotions to come to the surface.
I thought the ending was perfect, if a little rushed. My only complaint is that one story element introduced halfway through the book—a horror element that I absolutely loved—is resolved way too easily. But I get it, it’s the end of the series and there isn’t time for a lengthy resolution.
Reading Uncharted Hearts has truly been a fantastic experience, and I cannot wait to see what Constance Fay writes next!

The color of the cover art for Calamity caught my eye one night, a feat if there ever was one, as I was the mother to a newly turned 1-year-old and was still using a pump at night while everyone was asleep. I wanted to read something that would catch my attention and keep me from nodding off while I was working and there it was, Calamity by Constance Fay. A sci-fi adventure with romance? I finished that book in less than 2 days. Fiasco came out a few months before my second was born, the perfect book for late nights trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in and Chaos kept me company at night again, this time with a newborn in my arms, while I tried to survive the trenches of nighttime feedings. I loved every story, every pair that each book focused on, but I will admit, it was Itzel's book that I was waiting for and I'm so happy that Constance Fay decided to publish this. I pre-ordered it the moment it was available. I leapt at the chance to read this early and danced around when I got my copy. Like I said, this was the story I had been waiting for and it did not disappoint me one bit. Over the last few years, I've grown to adore this crew and it was a pleasure to spend time with them again for this last adventure. I will follow Constance Fay to every book release for years to come and if there is ever another adventure with this crew, sign me up. I will gladly follow these people wherever it is they go next.
Havoc, follows Itzel, who grew up as part of a monastery devoted to a death goddess but Itzel was forced out after a disastrous mission and has been a part of Temperance Reed's crew on the Calamity for years. The thing is, occasionally, Itzel still receives a name and because of her training and her beliefs, she does what she was trained to do, believing that it is not her place to question her orders, as she thinks it was that very thing that got her kicked out to begin with. When the crew of the Calamity is invited to attend a gathering that has all the most powerful families in the universe on one ship, Itzel joins them and that is where her old superiors give her another name. That name is Lucien Chandra, considered a prince to the Chandra family and a person from Itzel's past. Itzel wants to question her orders but she still tries to do what she was told to do and when that doesn't go exactly to plan, Itzel realizes she wants to learn more about Lucien and is starting to do just that when the Family Summit is hit with sabotage. Now faced with figuring out how to keep everyone safe, Itzel and Lucien have to work together to face a new enemy. If they succeed, the Families could start making a new world for everyone. For Itzel, she would have to discover if Lucien is willing to see a future with her in it beside him.
The world-building for these books has always grabbed my attention. The idea of the Families, how they wield power and then try to force others to do as they want by whatever means necessary, their politics, it all just makes for the most intriguing backdrop for each individual adventure. We are first introduced to the Families in Calamity, specifically through Captain Temperance Reed, who has been banished by her brother, the current head to the Reed family who after various events in the books are now part of the Five, known as the most influential and powerful of the families. Readers know that Temper hates the Families and then we thrown into an adventure in which we learn about every member of her crew while also getting to know Arcadio Escajeda, the second child of the Escajeda Family. It was the perfect way to give readers an in for this world, to help us to recognize the found family aspects of the crew and what they would do to keep each other safe and how Temper leads as a person who implicitly trusts her crew and loves them. It also helped with learning about another member of a Family and how Temper falling for them changes everything she had known in ways that will change the future for her, her crew and the Families they both came from.
Each book builds on this framework, the idea that the Families have something brewing that affects someone on the crew of the Calamity and everyone rallies together in their own way to help them. Each book also builds on the threat that the Families have on everyone they rule over with Chaos putting the Five in place for Havoc to have them all on one ship, with the idea being that one Family has been caught with nefarious plans and now has to be dealt with accordingly. Fay has built an intricate system in these books with the politics and the ruling power of the Families and each book works to display yet something else about the way this world works. Each member of the crew has has their own dealings with the Families, their own past they have tried to get away from, their own plights and struggles. Havoc is a culmination of the past three books and a worthy addition to the overall story arc and a fitting conclusion to the storyline. I said it before and I'll say it again, I was waiting for this book and everything that occurred kept my attention through many happenings in my world and it was a wonderful experience to read this book.
As for the characters, I've LOVED Itzel from the start. She always came across as interesting, having first been introduced as part of a religious order, or even a cult, that was devoted to the Dark Mother of the Void. She's small but deadly and her hands are covered in the tattoos that mark each name she has successfully gotten rid of for her previous order. She liked to make up new euphemisms that felt fun when they were revealed and she was happy to give people a shot to be part of the crew. I knew I would love her even more once she was the focus of the book and I can definitively say that Itzel did not disappoint. I loved the way she worked with her friends and how her past colored her present and her interest in Lucien Chandra. Every decision that Itzel made was carefully considered and the fact that she was so powerful was a treat. I loved how easy it was for her to move around, to fight and assess situations. She was just so much FUN to be with for this book and I knew it was going to be that way once I heard for sure that Havoc would be focused on her. I thought Lucien was the perfect match for her. Here was a guy who knew about Itzel's past and still trusted her, who believed in her, who cared so much about her after one adventure with her in their past. I loved how he was trying to keep so much on his shoulders and was trying to find a way to beat the threat that was hanging over his head without hurting anybody. He was admirable in his own right and was the exact type of person that would be perfect for Itzel. After spending three books learning about every member of the crew of the Calamity, it was wonderful to get to spend so much time with each of them in this book. We got to see each of them in their element, working hard to defeat their adversaries and keep everyone they loved safe and their back and forth with each other was a delight to witness. I had a feeling this book would be spectacular and it was that and more.
What really drew my attention to Itzel from the start was the Order that raised her and Fay does not shy away from discussing an order that raises acolytes for the express purpose of being assassins. Itzel was abandoned as a baby, left with the order, and she was great at her job until her last mission that got her expelled. I found the discussion interesting, the fact that even though she'd been kicked out, Itzel's faith was such an important part of her character. This was a woman whose faith was such an important part of her, that she wondered about her choices and how it would align with what she'd been raised to believe. The reveals given in this book that moved Itzel into a "crisis of faith" were surprising and the way it was woven into so much of this book for Itzel made me feel so much for her. I wanted to keep Itzel safe from what she was discovering and I was so grateful that she had Lucien by her side through every change that happened. Also, the reveals were just whoa, unexpected and yet at the same time, exactly what I feared would be revealed and the way Itzel moved with that and overcame what she went through were inspiring to see.
In the end, Havoc was a great way for this series to close. I loved each of these books and I can't wait to get my official paperback copy of Havoc to have next to the rest of the Uncharted Hearts series. If you have been wondering whether or not to try this series, you won't be disappointed with any of these books as each is worth reading several times over. If you love a sci-fi adventure that has a natural love story woven into it, you need to pick up this whole series and start reading. You'll thank me later.

Havoc is the fourth and final instalment in the adult sci-fi romance series, Uncharted Hearts. Each novel follows a separate couple but there is an overarching storyline so it is recommended to read them in order. Written in multi third person POV the story primarily follows Itzel and Lucien, an orphaned assassin for the goddess of death and corporate prince of one of the most powerful Families in the galaxy. Itzel thought her days with the assassin order were over until her old superiors reach out to her while her crew are attending a gathering of the most powerful Families in the universe. They want her to redeem herself by killing Lucien Chandra, a prince of one of those Families. Except as she attempts to go through with the job she realizes there is a lot more to Lucien and, maybe, there's more to what the order is wanting. As she teams up with Lucien to stop whatever is transpiring it becomes clear there is a darker enemy afoot...and they just might bring an end to the old world to save them all.
I love the relationships of these characters! Their dynamics just got me so hard!
Itzel is a woman who has spent her life in bloodshed and rule following. I liked seeing her redemption journal and the self reflection she gained as she realized she is more than what she was raised to be. Her draw to Lucien was effortless and her being able to be what she needs and his acceptance of that allowed her to flourish. She is awkward and it is very endearing.
Lucien is hilarious. He has this assassin from his past showing up and shows little to no fear of her - instead he is fascinated and he falls hard. I adored how much he wants Iztel and how he cares for her. He trusts her abilities but he wants people to remember and stand by her.
In terms of spice I would place this novel at 2 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are about 3 spicy scenes in this book with the first appearing around the 40% mark. The spice is detailed with a bit more of a romantic vibe to it so there is a focus on sensation. These characters have a previous connection and so upon meeting again they gravitate to each other. I loved the intensity of their relationship and how effortless they fall into a rhythm. There is little to no antagonism between them as they just fit even when they know they shouldn't - I especially enjoyed Itzel attempting to think of ways to distance herself and it utterly failing.
The story itself has a clear plotline to guide you through as Itzel and Lucien are brought together over the assassin plot and begin investigating ways to stop the changes being pushed forward. I loved their chemistry and how well they worked together. I also wasn't expecting the additional POVs from other characters that helped show how much bigger the story was. That said I did get lost some times in the story as more was added to this with each new POV. I felt like I was juggling what was happening. There is a good amount of action that keeps things moving and some moving moments around faith and loss. I felt this brought the climax to a really good moment and I was rooting for our characters. The falling action was the sweet spot allowing us to sit with our characters as they figure out what now and I felt the ending left on such a good note!
Overall, if you enjoy sci fi with strong romances that help get you invested then you will enjoy this series!

Havoc is the fourth and final instalment in the adult sci-fi romance series, Uncharted Hearts. Each novel follows a separate couple but there is an overarching storyline so it is recommended to read them in order. Written in multi third person POV the story primarily follows Itzel and Lucien, an orphaned assassin for the goddess of death and corporate prince of one of the most powerful Families in the galaxy. Itzel thought her days with the assassin order were over until her old superiors reach out to her while her crew are attending a gathering of the most powerful Families in the universe. They want her to redeem herself by killing Lucien Chandra, a prince of one of those Families. Except as she attempts to go through with the job she realizes there is a lot more to Lucien and, maybe, there's more to what the order is wanting. As she teams up with Lucien to stop whatever is transpiring it becomes clear there is a darker enemy afoot...and they just might bring an end to the old world to save them all.
I love the relationships of these characters! Their dynamics just got me so hard!
Itzel is a woman who has spent her life in bloodshed and rule following. I liked seeing her redemption journal and the self reflection she gained as she realized she is more than what she was raised to be. Her draw to Lucien was effortless and her being able to be what she needs and his acceptance of that allowed her to flourish. She is awkward and it is very endearing.
Lucien is hilarious. He has this assassin from his past showing up and shows little to no fear of her - instead he is fascinated and he falls hard. I adored how much he wants Iztel and how he cares for her. He trusts her abilities but he wants people to remember and stand by her.
In terms of spice I would place this novel at 2 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are about 3 spicy scenes in this book with the first appearing around the 40% mark. The spice is detailed with a bit more of a romantic vibe to it so there is a focus on sensation. These characters have a previous connection and so upon meeting again they gravitate to each other. I loved the intensity of their relationship and how effortless they fall into a rhythm. There is little to no antagonism between them as they just fit even when they know they shouldn't - I especially enjoyed Itzel attempting to think of ways to distance herself and it utterly failing.

I received this book as an ARC (after having read the previous trad pub trilogy) and have to say that it's probably my favorite so far, and I'm sad that it's coming to an end.

Itzel’s book did not disappoint, it’s brimming with heart pounding action as the overarching plot lines from the previous books come to a thrilling head! While Itzel is the (badass) MC, the entirety of the Calamity’s crew are back and the multiple POVs gave me liiiife! The twists and big reveals will keep you as off balance as zero g when SOP goes sideways, but don’t worry, Constance still brings her signature levity to the table! Itzel and Lucien have primo banter and I shipped them from the get-go. As usual I was blushing, laughing, and gasping my way through the pages as I constantly battled between bingeing and savoring this story.

Itzel’s story is chock-full of the standard Constance Fay hallmarks. She’s quippy, sarcastic, and hot af—even if she wears a deep hood the majority of the time. I think the illusion of mystery is shattered if you’re caught watching cartoons.

Havoc wraps up the Uncharted Hearts series, with the story focusing on Itzel, the assassin monk who has left her order that worships a death goddess. She’s still been doing jobs for the order at times, and the last one is to kill Lucien Chandra, one of the leaders of the Chandra Family. It turns out he’s the man she ran into years ago when everything went wrong between her and the order . This causes some reluctance to killing him, since she’d much rather get to know him better. Meanwhile, all of the leaders of the five Families are meeting together in a five-piece ship, and of course Pierce is plotting something and the crew of the Calamity is onboard to provide security. What could go wrong? It turns out, quite a lot. With everyone fighting for survival, the crew must figure out what happens if they manage to survive - what will the world look like in their future? This is another action-filled, suspenseful story with a lovely romance blooming within it. I love that everything was wrapped up, but I’d certainly like to see the crew back together again in the future for more adventures.

I loved revisiting the crew of the Calamity, and this book was such a good way to wrap up the series.
To be totally honest, I’m not sure how much I cared about the actual plot of this book. But the characters, the romance, and the way everything connected with the past books in the series and those characters was just so good that I still loved this. While it was great that most of the book was in Itzel’s POV, I really loved seeing Cyn and Caro having a POV as well, and quite a few chapters from Temper’s POV! Temper & Arcadio are my favourite couple of the series, so I loved that this tied back to their relationship as well.
With books 2 and 3, I felt like they could have been read as standalones. I don’t think that’s the case with this book, I think you need to have read all 3 books prior to this one to really understand the world and the characters. This certainly isn’t a complaint on my end!
I’m excited to hear that there will be an audiobook coming out for this at some point, I will definitely reread it when it does because the other audiobooks were so well done.

I was very disheartened when I heard that this book wasn't going to be published through Bramble. Constance Fay's Uncharted Hearts books have been fantastic sci-fi romance reads. Havoc, book 4 in the series, is no different.
Since Calamity I have been waiting for Itzel's story and now that I have it...I want more. I love the romance in the book, but I also love the world building. The universe makes sense (in all the ways it can make sense when there are corporations running things), the characters that inhabit the worlds are wonderfully flawed, and I feel like I understand the society of the places we visit. Havoc is officially my favorite book in this series. I feel the plot, character development, humor, and political intrigue are stronger than ever. This book differs from others in the series with the use of multiple POV chapters, and it works so well. The characters that we have grown to know and love throughout the series truly have distinct voices. Itzel's story is so fascinating and the journey she goes on is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Lucien is just the sweetest little bean that ever was too. Everything about this book worked for me - Itzel's interest in biology and how that is used throughout the story, her deeply held identity as an assassin in her faith, and the chemistry between the main characters. I'm so sad to say goodbye to these characters but absolutely loved this story!

Full of Constance Fay's unique brand of humor, I would describe it as a dry sarcastic witty humor, but I'm not sure if that's the exact right description for it. Serious subjects and dire situations, but still such a fun book. I absolutely love the found family aspect of this series, almost as much as the romance. Almost. Calamity is the ship and Itzel (the main character of this book) is one of the crew, this book is told in 1st person, primarily from Itzels POV, but there are a few chapters from other crew members POVs (primarily Temper, the captain, see book 1). I love the unique creative insults and intentionally made up words that really should be real words. (like Fucktastrophe.)
While each book is a standalone, each following different crew members, I highly recommend reading the first 3 books before reading this one, it will definitely make it more enjoyable since you will already be familiar and care about the rest of the Calamity crew.

Sci-fi romance is my favorite genre, so maybe I’m a little biased, but I absolutely loved this series and Havoc was a fantastic finale.
It was bittersweet saying goodbye to the crew of the Calamity. After following these characters through four books, they really started to feel like old friends. I loved getting one last adventure with them, and it delivered everything I wanted with plenty of action, great banter, high stakes, and a romance that fit perfectly into the story.
One of my favorite things about this series is how Constance Fay balances exciting space adventures with memorable characters. No matter how chaotic things become, the relationships at the heart of the story always shine through.

A wonderful conclusion to this arc of the Uncharted Hearts series! Itzel has always been the cool mysterious one, and in many ways I feel like the series has been building up toward this point of view, so I'm so glad this is out now. Not only do we finally get to really understand everybody's favorite biologist-assassin-nun, we also get some of the best interactions between the crew of the Calamity yet!

I will say it took me a minute but I remember everything since I haven’t read the third book since it came out. But we got there. (Grumbling about unfinished series)
I really liked that this one, which it was a link, we got different POVs from the other characters involved because she brought the whole story back together.
Also she has the funniest inner monologues for her characters.

I have loved this series, and Itzel has been a favorite of mine. Her story did not disappoint and I'm a little sad to leave the world of Uncharted Hearts behind.
Add it to your TBR! It's a must read. But dont skip the rest! Each book delves a little further into the world and gives you important information and character introductions.

amazing ending to a great series
I loved this! The whole series has been great, and this book was no exception. I was curious about Itzel’s story, and it delivered in my opinion. Lots of action, good romance, and it wrapped up all the loose ends and the greater arc from the other books. Bittersweet that we don’t get more stories from this crew, but I found the conclusion to be satisfying.

July 18, 2026First off: thanks to Constance Fay for providing an ARC! I have been a fan from the beginning. And to my best friend who recommended this series: love you so much! Can't wait til we are able to have our little book club chats about the Calamity Crew.
Overall, the book is another enjoyable action-packed romp through political intrigue in space with the sweet taste of romance as a treat. 4.5 stars!

Havoc! Finally we get a glimpse into Itzel's psyche and it is no less wild and morally complex than you would expect from a life-loving space assassin monk. Itzel's characterization is very well fleshed out and her motivations throughout the story (though sometimes crazy) are clear. Itzel spends a majority of the book wrestling with her faith and the guilt she feels for not being a good enough disciple of the Mother. I found this aspect of the story quite compelling; though on occasion in the latter half of the book I wondered why Itzel was so fixated on messing up her assassination since she had seemingly accepted that the Mother's will was questionable.
Lucien is a charming male love interest. Though Itzel mentions having sex with multiple genders, I was at first a little disappointed that the fourth book in the series also featured a hetero-presenting coupling. I was, however, easily charmed by Lucien. The pairing of an important Family council member with a biologist/assassin made for a fun contrast. The chemistry between Itzel and Lucien read very well: they are full of banter and quips just like the other Calamity crew members, but they both bring their own flavor of sass.
As for the wrap-up of the series and the major plot elements: I was somewhat underwhelmed that Pierce seemed to be behind everything. The implication that he had his fingers in every pie, driving every evil deed brought up in the series felt as if he was painted broadly with the villain brush. I don't mind this treatment since the series is overall a space romance and not a political thriller, but I was expecting a few more major players to hide in Pierce's shadow doing less obvious evil deeds and using Pierce as cover. (I don't know, that's probably just my opinion though, so take that as you will).
The secondary point of view is Temper. Temper's voice seems to come the most naturally to the author: the quips and made up words (fuckknees etc.) are creative and saucy. Temper and Arcadio prove that they make a good pair; sticking together through Family upheaval. I must admit I was surprised by the revelation that Fredrick Reed decided to will the control of the Reed Family to Temper. I was with Temper on the "he doesn't get to redeem himself" train. The resolution of the Reed Family being handed to Temper is a "burn it all down" solution. While I appreciate this (and oh god someone had to do it, the Family system is bad for everyone) the introduction of the movement to dismantle the Families as a whole came on quite quickly.
My favorite thing about this book was Itzel's action capability. The action scenes were written in a very fast-paced, cinematic matter. I LOVED imagining Itzel flipping over obstacles, flying through the air on a trapeze, and throwing precise knives to kill her opponents just right. The kills in this book are brutal: both on a physical and emotional level!
The camaraderie between the Calamity crew members (particularly the women) is such a refreshing touch. Every scene that had all of the characters together felt like a treat: I could recognize my friends in each character. The banter and friendship between them felt so natural. More please!!!
Also: as a bald baddie, I can fully appreciate Itzel's little rant about the perils of having hair in combat! Heck yeah tattooed bald babes can get it done!
Anyway: this book is so fun. I was hooked on Itzel in the first book where she is a mysterious, quirky creature and now we get to see into her head (a wild ride)! Space romance is under-rated, and I can't believe more people don't want spicy zero gravity scenes! Do yourself a favor and give the series a read: it is worth it.

The resolution of the Reed Family being handed to Temper is a "burn it all down" solution. While I appreciate this (and oh god someone had to do it, the Family system is bad for everyone) the introduction of the movement to dismantle the Families as a whole came on quite quickly.
My favorite thing about this book was Itzel's action capability. The action scenes were written in a very fast-paced, cinematic matter. I LOVED imagining Itzel flipping over obstacles, flying through the air on a trapeze, and throwing precise knives to kill her opponents just right. The kills in this book are brutal: both on a physical and emotional level!
The camaraderie between the Calamity crew members (particularly the women) is such a refreshing touch. Every scene that had all of the characters together felt like a treat: I could recognize my friends in each character. The banter and friendship between them felt so natural. More please!!!
Also: as a bald baddie, I can fully appreciate Itzel's little rant about the perils of having hair in combat! Heck yeah tattooed bald babes can get it done!
Anyway: this book is so fun. I was hooked on Itzel in the first book where she is a mysterious, quirky creature and now we get to see into her head (a wild ride)! Space romance is under-rated, and I can't believe more people don't want spicy zero gravity scenes! Do yourself a favor and give the series a read: it is worth it.
