A piece of rock and movie history I rate an 11 out of 10…
A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: The Story of Spinal Tap by Rob Reiner covers the history of This is Spinal Tap the movie…as well as the TRUE history of the band and when you flip it over and find Smell The Book: the Oral History of Spinal Tap by Marti Dibergi.
Obviously it’s very sad to read this in the wake of the great Rob Reiner’s death considering his voice comes through as friendly and clear as his narration in the original film…it’s a thing of beauty.
For the record, the book only covers the original movie and its importance.
, Chapters follow the chronological production, starting with before the movie even existed…when spinal tap was just part of a sketch on a Comedy show…and how it ballooned from there…
It’s really sweet and funny and even includes some loving comments by musicians who appreciated its wit and depiction of the rock industry. There’s event a story about how Spinal Tao getting lost on the way to the stage paralleled a similar event that happened to the Kate great Tom Petty.
The slip book…the oral history…covers the true history in their own words…along with historical notes on albums and the band’s history not in the original movie…
