Saw Bears #2

Woodcutter Werebear

Rate this book
Skyler Drake is in way over her head. As a breeder chosen by a Crestfall warrior, she’s had plenty of time to accept her fate. But when a chance encounter in Saratoga thrusts her into the path of a mysterious, and strange-talking shifter, Kellen, she begins to realize just how big the world is. And when Kellen-the-kidnapper turns out to be a battle-hardened werebear, she’s thinking she just might have stumbled upon someone who could love her despite her flaws—and possibly survive the wrath of her people.

Kellen would rather be hanged than watch a woman be hurt and trapped in a life she doesn’t choose, and when he gets a glimpse at just how much Skyler is keeping inside, he doesn’t think, only acts on protective instinct. Sure, he’s kidnapping her, but he knows what she really is, and she can escape any time she wants. Unfortunately, his bold moves and determination to show Skyler just how unbreakable she can be put his crew of lumberjack bear shifters in peril. But if he can toe the edge of danger, and avoid the wrath of his alpha, he just might find a mate worth sharing his secrets with.

A cute, really fast read.

I like this series.
It feels exactly like junk food, it doesn't really stop your hunger, but it tastes good and it'll keep you full 'til you're ready for your actual meal.

Okay, I've read a ton of these short little smutty shifter books over the holiday season, so I am waaay behind on reviewing. I hereby vow to get my shit together and write the reviews!!

Hey, that raccoon had it coming! And, stop calling me a man! I'll get the upper lip waxing caught up on tomorrow, sheesh!

Since I have a hundred or so reviews to write tonight, and I'm tired already and a little drunk, these reviews will be short and probably get less coherent as I go. And, hey, let's face it, coherency isn't my strength in the best of circumstances.

This book is about Kellen and Skylar. He's a lumberjack bear shifter who lives in a trailer park, and she is a falcon shifter. She was being abused, he rescued her, and then had sex with her. I mean, sure, thanks for the rescue, but it doesn't mean I will sleep with you, dude! I don't owe you shit!

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to be rude or anything. It's only polite to show your appreciation.

There was a little bit of angsty stuff, but they always seem to get over it quickly. I think shifter-sex is magical or something. Hey, that theory is about as believable as a group of hot-as-hell lumberjack bear shifters living in a trailer park and wishing for true love!

On to the next bear....

Skylar and Kellan

Kellan sees Skylar at the store and gives her a soda noticing the bruising on her face. He brings her back to the trailer park to the crew. Skylar gets stronger and Kellan learns that he does deserve a mate after all. I just wish we got to see what Kellan did to Roger instead of just knowing he killed him.

Just started reading and I have to share the hilarity. This book is going great! Their future grandchildren will ask "How did you meet grandpa?" & Skyler will say "well he bought me a coke and then kidnapped me".

Finished this story and I think it's my favorite of the T.S. Joyce's books so far. Skyler's falcon culture wasn't talked about much but I hope going forward changes can be made for the females' way of life. Knowing that her mother must have suffered the same fate while she was growing up had to be tough for her to realize during her first few weeks of freedom. I love Kellen! He is the perfect man for her and understood what she needed, even though all his instincts wanted him to do the opposite in some cases. Yea! Kellan and Skyler!

Update June 2017. All of the above still applies, and if you keep reading the spinoffs you do learn more about falcon culture

OH my god. This book is so precious. This story follows Kellen and Skyler, this book pulls on your heart strings alot!! 😫 There aren't enough men like Kellen in this world, he is a gentle giant with the biggest heart ❤ I had tears in my eyes reading about his past and why he is how he is. He is super special ❤ and skyler has also had a terrible past, until Kellen came along and quite literally kidnapped her from her current life. He means well 😂❤ I absoloutley adored this book. I didn't want it to end!! I'm off to read the next book, for the second time 😁 yes, I've read all these books before but they needed to be shared with you all. So underrated 🙌🏼

Taciturn H abused by this father and believes he's not a good person. But he's loyal and saves the h when she's been beaten by evil OM. They save each other and it was great to have a very different animal coming into the crew of bears. They are devoted to each other and become stronger as a couple.

This second book had more too it when it came to story plot than the first. We are reintroduced to the saw bears and their trailer park. Unlike the first, this one includes two shifters and the female is already mated with someone. But when Kellen can easily tell that Skyler is being abused by her 'mate' he is quick to take her away. We learn more about their community, more about what it means for the bears to mate forever etc. I am excited to get into the third book in this series. Oh also, I really liked how Skyler found her voice and was able to stand up for herself to not only Roger but her father also. And Kellen took a bit step by allowing Skyler to enter into his lair and share things with her.

Entertaining book with a fast pace of events involving serious issues as possible TW: ()

Overall: Liked the couple, Kellen is a cinnamon roll who can kill while Skyler is a cinnamon roll who is a cinnamon roll. Good communication, continuous expression of feelings (first time having a big hero talker!! Haha) and a bound crew around.

Con: Dislike the fast pace with a theme I consider full of self healing and empowerment but it wasn't bad written so I give my green card.

Different paranormal couples!! (I love this stufffff)

For me, books are all about how they make you feel, and I like this series. I want to know what happens with each pack bear! This book gives us Kellan and Skyler. Kellan and Skylar are so sweet and flawed. I read this book (novella length book, really) quickly. I feel I've grown too attached to this shifter crew! Beware! On to the next book..

Sweet!

Honestly, who would ever think werebear lumberjacks living in a trailer park would be sexy? Miss Joyce has succeeded. The men tug at your hearts with all the alpha, protective tendencies .. n the camaraderie they obviously share. First Tagan gets Brooke, now Kellen and Skyler. You are just drawn into their world and now, I can't wait for all them hunky werebears to find their HEA. Looking forward to the next book!

Super silly and fun shifter romance featuring lumberjacks. I totally love that they all work for a living. No billionaires, rock stars, or other rarified folks.

3.5 stars. Still don't understand why the author labeled her audio book as the "unabridged" version. Is the ebook abridged? I don't know. I have written to her and am still waiting on a response if one's coming.

Compared to Lumberjack Werebear (Saw Bears #1), I enjoyed this one far more. Less continuity issues. Less questions unanswered. Less questions created. Still didn't explain any of the questions I had when I finished Lumberjack WereBear, but I was quite pleased to see the crew back, better than ever, this time.

Kellen, Tagan's second, is the hero of this tale. Unfortunately, how he is represented here wasn't how he was represented in the first book. It was as if the writer thought: "Oops! This is how I really wanted him to be!" before writing WW. I'm pleased she didn't try to over-explain her switcheroo because that would have encouraged more questions from the readership than necessary. It's not that Kellen is mentally retarded. He's socially maladjusted but in a good way if there ever was a good way in this regard. He just doesn't do crowds well. He doesn't do keeping-your-mouth-shut well. He does do speaking his mind well and being overly open and honest, but I'm in the business in which is this more desired than not. I mean, I'm tired of people not saying what they mean even if it comes out poorly. I'm at the age that I don't have an ego to be coddled. Just tell me what you mean and I'll deal with the fallout happily.

Kellen's definitely my kind of guy. And in Skyler's case, he's definitely what she needed at the right time.

Skyler is your typical, badly abused female who's been promised to a status-seeking guy who has no qualms in using physical and emotional violence to get his way. Except she's never put out to him, refusing to do so until the claiming ceremony. And who should she run into at a grocery store (sounds a lot like Costco, for some reason) but Kellen who had gone to pick up some things because Brooke (see book #1) was coming back to the crew. Skyler mistakes Brooke to be Kellen's mate (after all, who else but a mate would buy a woman flowers?) and is saddened because he has been the first male in his life that made her feel more positive about herself, and he's apparently taken. But when Kellen sees the bruises around her eyes she's been hiding behind her curtain of hair, he kidnaps her, telling her to take all the time she needed to heal, but she wasn't going back to her promised. Over his dead body...

So begins the rather rapid and unusual courtship of Kellen and Skyler. Kellen worries he would be inadequate as a mate. She worries that her being so physically and emotionally damaged would repulse him. But together, they mesh beautifully despite the fact that her family has a legacy which makes her genes important, something any of her kind of were would want. But Roger isn't the kind of male to insult or steal from.

Unlike Book #1, I found these two main characters to be far more interesting to read about. I immediately liked how TSJ wrote his character, not truly a bumbling village idiot but a big, strong guy who wore his emotions on his sleeve. I doubt he would ever socially exist like most people, but does he need to be like the rest of us? I hope not! That's the charm of this character. You can't help but to like him, to hurt for him when he hurts. He also knows enough about psychology to understand how victims eventually heal and what they need to heal, but he has had a few good teachers in that department. At least he learns from his lessons. As for Skyler, she is the typical brow-beaten female whose pleas for help hasn't done her any good. She may have been raised to be a breeder (placid rather than "willful"), but I guess it required violence and pain to make her submissive. Funny how well Kellen could read her as he does on the trip back to the trailer park. I was pleased to see how these two grew into their relationship. We don't necessarily see that in most books. It's hard not to not rush things, but there was a limited number of pages to fit this story into. At the end, I was very satisfied on how their relationship matured without the questions I had with Book #1.

In terms of world-building, as I mentioned before, I didn't get much explanation of my questions from Book #1. I was intrigued by what Skyler's animal was. (I didn't guess it! Should have...) In regards to more details about logging, I was pleased to know that she did do better research in this department for this book. It made it only feel that more real.

In regards to editing, the same as in Book #1. Better than most books. I didn't see any continuity issues. There were a few places I wished TSJ could had elaborated upon. But I was way more satisfied by this book so I'll be reading Book #3. Therefore, I highly recommend this book/series now.

Woodcutter Werebear

Okay here's one of the things I really liked about this story and this world. It enunciated very clearly how contrived and unnatural patriarchal hierarchies are. The MFC comes from her own community of shifters who organize themselves like this:

“No, we have councils for each side of the war. They keep the peace between the people on each side and make wartime decisions. Then come the warriors. Then come the men who do nothing for our kind. Then the children, and below everyone come the females. The breeders. I’m no princess like Tagan said. I’m nothing at all.”

It sounds absurd and yet there have always been civilizations built just like this. One could argue that the current day Western world is slipping right back into this construction (and is already there in some ways).

All it took in this story is a random kindness from the MMC to start to unravel the brainwashing of her people.

“Her life had meaning.
All it had taken was a few hours with a nice stranger to show her she had more value than a fertile womb and the bloodline that ran her veins.”

It's a great reminder and affirmation for how to be with the world outside of the books.

I also really liked the MMC’s somewhat autistic personality and the MFC’s struggle to work through complex PTSD. Their compassion and acceptance for each other was super sweet.

I enjoyed this one. Kellen and Skyler both had their wounds but the two of them together were just so perfect. I adored Kellen after he opened up a bit when Brooke showed up on the scene in the first book, so I was happy for him to get his mate. My heart hurt hearing what he went through a cub and then adding poor Skyler's plight to that. GAH.

Skyler was so strong and fearless going after what she wanted. And that fight scene! Badass! It was amazing. I loved the epilogue and it truly brought tears to my eyes to have them get their HEA.

I can't wait to continue on with this series.

Another great addition

This series continues with another great addition. While this is a PNR shifter series I find them to be more focused on the growth and change of the two main characters than on the shifter aspect of the characters. An enjoyable book!

This is Kellen's book and Skyler is the woman he meets and falls for. Insta love, minor drama, and then a happy ending.

These are quick and easy paranormal stories that allow you to escape without much thought and limited drama.

I really loved the first book and this series and jumped right into this one. This one is Kellen's story. Kellen is amazing. I think he has the potential to be a scary looking guy but he's really a nice guy. He sees Skyler and has wants to protect her. Skyler is a little shy and is not in a good relationship with Roger. Skyler comes from a different shifter family and they run things differently. Kellen takes her away from that. I liked that the crew was trying to figure out what kind of shifter Skyler was and I liked guessing along with them. I loved seeing Kellen and Skyler's relationship blossom. I was also waiting for Roger to pop up and try to ruin what Kellen and Skyler had.

March 2024 - Attempted to Read
(DNF'd around the 50% mark.)

Book one, rated 2.5 stars, was the first book I read by this author.

☹️ Book 2 shows T.S. Joyce's formula:
🔻 The h was SO hurt by a person or a shifter.
🔻 The H can't claim her for some lame reason.
🔻 The weak H is an alpha in name only.
🔻 The h needs to be strong and make it on her own.

T.S. is a prolific author who writes several mediocre books per year. (I try to avoid authors who do that.) I'm well past the age of settling for mediocre, cookie-cutter romances.

There there, done with my Second.
This book like the first got a trademark, a mark of sadness, of abuse. But the wholesome of this book is being yourself, standing up for you with yourself and with the crew. They would step back, push you in a way that is soft and not a bullying. Give time and space. That's the emotional part.
For a novella that go through many emotions is not easy. And it was certainly well done!
With this one, I got more emotion, the caring and the love. Actually, Brooke gave a beautiful scene, with her painting and her arm wrap around the waist.
And I also learnt a bit about wings.
Let's get on with the 3rd! Or a pause of PNR? Nah move on move on with our next lumberjack.

This is the story of Skyler and Kellen, and the second book in the series. It can be read as a standalone. Kellen rescues (or kidnaps) Skyler from an abusive relationship. She is a breeder for her people. Her father is on the council, she comes from a long line. However her soon to be mate treats her very badly.

Kellen wisks her away to his caravan park and allows her to grow and fix herself, he just wishes he was worthy of her.

Great series so far and I'm looking forward to reading more.

Skylar has been a parachute trainer, but in her culture a female is only a breeder with no choices and feels worthless. The mate chosen for her is also physically abusive even though they are not yet truly mated. Kellen has never really adapted to the ways of humans because of the way he was treated by his father, but he just can't tolerate females being abused so he takes her home to his people. This is the story of their healing and growth. And it is exceptionally well done.
I have the audio and Mackenzie Harte aces the narration once again.
