From selling her family on a popular website, to protecting an imperfect evergreen tree with five tops in her back yard, (What would happen if they cut down imperfect human?), author Julie Seedorf's Something About Nothing is a collection of writings from her column of the same name that debuted in 2006. In everything that we speak to our friends and neighbors, there is a something hidden deep in the recesses of our hearts - silent, wanting to come out when we greet one another. We feel no one cares if we hurt or need a little bit of kindness to make us smile each day, and so we spend our conversations on nothings. "How's the weather?" "How are you?" The answer is always, "Fine." We don't always answer with what is hidden below the surface. This collection of columns is full of inspiration, silliness, and heart. Laughter and dreams keep the soul alive. They are the something needed in our nothings of life.
As human beings, we are always a work in progress. From birth to death we live, hurt, laugh, cry, feel, and with all of those emotions we grow as people, as family members, and as friends. I am a dreamer and feel blessed to have the opportunity in my writing to pass those dreams on to others. I believe you are never too old to dream and to turn those dreams into a creative endeavor. I live in rural Minnesota and I am a wife, mother, and grandmother.
I have worn many hats throughout my life such as working as a waitress, nursing home activities person, office manager, and finally, a computer repair person eventually owning my own computer sales and repair business. I never forgot my love of writing and quit my computer business in 2012 after signing a contract with Cozy Cat Press for Granny Hooks A Crook, the first book in my Fuchsia, Minnesota Series.
I now have four series, my latest being The Whistle Stop Series with the first book being A Small Town Can BE #Murder.
I also dabble a bit in watercolor painting and hope to eventually add pictures to my children’s book series, Granny’s In Trouble.
Oh, and did I tell you I like to be a little bit silly.
SOMETHING ABOUT NOTHING is a delightful and thought provoking book based on author Julie Seedorf’s column by the same name.
I love her idea that “…underneath all the nothings we talk about – there is something much deeper needing to be said.” It’s so very true. We automatically answer fine or pretty good, or we expect others to answer the same. But what are we really thing? Feeling?
With chapters titled Wrinkly Crinkly, Ugly Shoes, I’m A Shorty, and Me? A Whimp?, just to name a few, I found myself in her words over and over again. It was as though author Seedorf had written this book (her column) based on my life. I’m sure you’ll find yourself on these wonderful pages too.
Treat yourself to this fun, thoughtful, and insightful book today. And pick up a copy or two for loved ones. Buy A Friend A Book Day is August 31. SOMETHING ABOUT NOTHING will make a perfect gift for that or any day!
Julie Seedorf is also the author of the hysterically funny, Fuchsia Minnesota Mystery series, and the Granny Is In Trouble Children’s Mystery series. She is also part of the We Go On: Charity Anthology for Veterans.
I have no doubt you’ll adore her books. I sure do!
I'd like to start by saying that I won this book from Julie on Facebook. She asked me kindly if I would leave a review when I was done. I said yes, but it has been so long, she probably gave up hope on me. Better late than never? Not knowing what this book was about, upon the first few pages I thought, "This sounds like it should be a blog." Turns out I was right. It's Julie's collection of articles. Once I wrapped my head around the fact that she published a book about a bunch of articles, I dug in. I found myself enjoying each one more than the last. I felt like I got to know Julie, who, if she really is like her articles, is a very kind, positive, loving human being, and I felt it a privilege that she shared so much of her life in this book. I got about halfway done with Something About Nothing, and decided to put it down for a little while. Not because I wasn't enjoying it, on the contrary! I was enjoying it so much, I wanted to save it and make it last. I so enjoyed the way she wrote, and her thoughts on paper, which sometimes sounded a lot like my own blog. I didn't want them to end too soon. Then I had guilt. I felt bad that it was taking me so long to finish this great book, and I needed to do that so I could share my review for her. She deserves it. So here it is, my review. I loved it. It was true, whimsical, funny, nostalgic among many other feelings. I wish there had been a comment section after each article so I could communicate with Julie. I feel she would be a really neat person to chat with...she'd have coffee, I'd have tea.
i won this novel in a good reads contest. and i must say this novel was great! it kept me smiling every story. i felt i could relate a lot to the stories. i work in a beauty boutique and i see a lot of women of different ages buying tons of products to make themselves "look better". but the authors right deep down your outside image doesnt matter as much as your inside. all those creams that say anti wrinkle and lip glosses that make your lips bigger is all a myth. its a mirage that we pretend these products work when in fact they dont. its all in our head. we think a anti wrinkle cream will just magically make every line on our face disappear but it wont. we should appreciate all the lines and other flaws our skin has its who we are.
This is an awesome book to pick up and read anytime! Julie's clever writings, and situations, are all easy to identify with. If you are looking for a book to read, and don't want to get involved in a novel, this is the book for you. Very entertaining and definitely five stars!
