Secrets, lies, and family ties bind us together on the banks of the Pontchartrain…
Discouraged over the direction the Douglas murder investigation is headed, Gregory Adams reaches out to Jamie Caissy for help.
Hopeful to avoid another family crisis, the Montgomery-Adams family returns to South Louisiana, and Finn Adams takes a job that will alter his world… and his mother’s.
Lesley Huff receives a generous and life-changing gift, yet she refuses to tell anyone… including her wife, Sylvia.
Moving forward, Millie Douglas focuses on the relationship with her daughter, Sydney, and finds an unexpected new friend.
Resolving that her marriage is at an end, Christine Caissy makes a bold decision.
Bob O’Malley’s faux relationship with Millie deteriorates, yet he finds solace in the most unlikely companion.
The Congressman sends his daughter to New Orleans with specific instruction: marry an O’Malley.
After the death of her son and loss of her beloved Gregory, Arianne Douglas spirals downward into a dark depression and finds a secret way to cope.
Andrew Douglas is still determined to hold his family together, despite subtle evidence that his wife is still in love with his best friend.
For Elizabeth Burgess, writing is not only what she loves to do, it is freedom, salvation, and escape. It is life. Introduced to the art of words at a young age by Junior High English teacher, she poured herself into a self-study of all things poetry and prose throughout the entirety of her high school and college career—hoping to one day become a lyricist in Nashville. As the years went on, her dreams changed and morphed, but her love for words did not.
A nurse by trade, Elizabeth loves incorporating the medical field in each book she writes. Her favorite characters are always flawed, and if you see her wearing any color besides black, you know she’s sick. Thanks to her maternal grandparents, she believes she can do anything if she sets her mind to it, and will always offer you a glass of sweet tea if you come over.
When she’s not working on her next novel, she enjoys Saturday nights in Death Valley, listening to Fleetwood Mac on rainy days, and taking pictures of her beloved Louisiana. Elizabeth is the author of two series, Counterplay and the Hopewell Coven. She lives in Northeast Louisiana’s farming country with her partner Terri, two Catahoula Curs, Bowie and Pike, and host of spoiled cats.
Whoa! Did I just read that correctly because the ending threw me for a loop?? I don't get surprised too often, and that shocked the hell out of me!
Secrets, secrets, and more secrets everywhere. I love secrets when I know them. I love secrets when I didn't even know they existed and they just spring up on the page. Some of these people have so many secrets I don't even know if they know what's real anymore.
Every time I think I have a hold on what's happening, a new twist is revealed. It makes it exciting and refreshing to read. I keep equating this to a prime time soap opera and that's why I love it. I think of Knots Landing, Dallas, Falcon Crest, etc., but, believe me, J.R. Ewing couldn't hold a candle to these people.
We learn more about Sol, Helen, Jamie and Alissa in this one. Who am I kidding? You learn a lot more about everyone! Trent and Tristan are moving back with their son Finn (Millie's son). Tiffany is still a loose cannon, but even more dangerous to Millie and Christine than she was in the first books.
Some of the best parts in this one are interactions between Millie and Arianne. I really loved those parts and I hope they continue...but I'm not holding my breath lol
Thank goodness I had the next book because if I would have read that ending and couldn't read further, I might have cried!
** All three books in this series are on sale on Amazon fir $0.99 each until April 5th, 2015.
* I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book is #2 in THE WAITING Series. There is a full length book (The Waiting #1) and a novella (The Funeral - Book 1.5) before this book.
* WARNING* This book will not make much sense if readers have not read THE WAITING and THE FUNERAL first. To understand exactly what is happening with each of the characters and how they came to this point in their lives is essential to truly appreciate the storyline.
THE WAITING SERIES is complex and has a complicated plot with a large cast of characters.
This book focuses more on the O'Malley and Caissy families. But the love triangle of Arianna and her husband, Andrew and his best friend, Gregory is still part of the story.
Since their son, Nash was murdered Andrew and Arianne have decided to work on repairing their marriage. Arianne still loves Gregory, but she feels that she must try to fix her marriage to Andrew.
For his part, Andrew has stopped having sex with every female in the hospital and has actually started paying attention to his children.
Gregory is trying to make his relationship with Tiffany work. He believes she is pregnant with his child and he has always wanted a child of his own, but he would leave her in a heartbeat if Arianne would have him.
Tiffany is not really pregnant. Well, she doesn't start out that way. She gets inseminated but there does not seem to be a plan for what will happen when the baby is born and a DNA test is conducted. The pregnancy and everything else she does is a direct result of orders from Bob O'Malley. She is a pawn in a much bigger game and has no idea what she has gotten herself involved in.
Jamie Caissy is the family patriarch. His wife, Helen, has Alzheimer's Disease and maybe other mental issues. Jamie owns and operates a massive sugar plantation and he seems invincible.
I could go on and on describing what is happening with each of the characters in this book, but I will say that it is much more fun to just read it and find out for yourself.
This book (and in fact the entire series so far) has it all. There is murder, hate, love, lust, betrayals, family drama, secrets and lies.
This series is incredible. The vast number of characters should make the book confusing, but the authors have done such an amazing job of character building and in explaining how each character ties in to the main plot and how their stories are all interconnected.
As far as I am concerned everyone needs to read these books. It's intricate plot and detailed characters will ensure that every reader will become a fan. You MUST READ these books.
I am very much looking forward to reading THE FIRE: Book 2.5 in The Waiting Series.
NOTE: This book is intended for mature readers due to adult scenes, situations and language.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Elizabeth Burgess and Marie Hewes have been best friends since the ages of six and four. They both live with their partners in Louisiana. THE WAITING is their first book.
This book just ramps up the drama in the Waiting Series. There are pregnancies, miscarriages, divorces, new romances, kids growing up, and people growing apart. This series is just so good! This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, luckily the next book is already out! Thank goodness!
*Ecopy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review* This is NO way influenced my opinion. Well I'm going to start by saying that this book is so incredibly good that you will want to read it slow and enjoy it. I loved getting to know more about some of the characters in the story and I have to say that this book does not disappoint in any chapter, every chapter is full of secrets, twists and a lot of drama (not the bad kind of drama) I know when you say drama you think negative but it is not like that in this book. The story is more like a soap opera that you watch on T.V. but so much better. There are a lot of characters in the story and what I love about it is that they are all connected in some way or another, you have to pay attention to remember who is who and what they do in the book, there are many doctors in the story but not all the characters are in medicine. At about 30% of the story we learn something that was so shocking to me and I believe it will be shocking to all the fans of this story, it was definitely a twist I did not see coming at all and I even said out loud "Holy Sh!t" it was definitely something and I am still thinking about it and cannot believe it. I have to say that I think the story got even better, not that I didn't love it before but so much has happened because of Nash's death, so many characters have changed because of it, specially Millie and I love how her character has become kind and good. I still don't know what to think of Rafe, I like him but don't want to make up my mind about him just yet just in case we get thrown a curve ball... I'm very happy about how Sydney's life is progressing with Chris and how her relationship with Millie has changed. Finn and Sloane, very happy where that went, I like their relationship the way it is now. Tiffany, can we kill her character off please? LOL! I truly dislike her with a passion. Also can we kill Bob and maybe Sol? I'm kidding, they make the story interesting ;) So much happen in this part of the story, this is a very well written book but you need to read the previous book to understand the story and I also suggest you read the info on the characters first before getting into the story, that way you won't get lost because there are a lot of characters. Looking forward to the next installment.
I reviewed the first two books in this series earlier in the year and the first of these can be found here . This, the third book in the series picks up where the last two left off. If you have read the earlier reviews you will know I compare it to a glitzy American soap opera like Dallas in its hay day. A soap opera I named 'Rivers' after the hospital where most of the characters worked. So perhaps the best way to think of this novel is season 2, which follows on from the tragic ending of the previous season.
As with the first two books the back drop of Louisiana gives the books a setting which has an exotic flavour at times. While the complex lives and loves of the characters twist, turn and snake back on themselves. The real joy of this series is however the writing. Elizabeth and Marie manage to keep the action moving swiftly along from one character to another. The point of view moves from one section to the next like links in an elaborate chain, with scenes cutting each few pages. It would be easy to have the stories become lost and confused, carrying such a large cast and so many plot lines and yet they manage to weave it so well that you never lose track, and are held in a wrapping of anticipation for the next snippet of story.
The measure of any novel is whether you care about the characters and their lives. No matter how well written a story may be if you don't care about the characters then you will lose interest along the way. it is perhaps therefore an indictment to how much I cared about the characters that I was moved to tears in a couple of places. I worried about them, cared about them, shared there joys and there defeats. But importantly the characters also grew along the way. Characters who in the first novel were mired in a darkness stepped forward into the light. While they still carry the dark side of them that gave them anti hero status in the first books they are fleshed out with more back story and they change along the way. Events influence the actors in this drama and they develop in ways you don't expect yet seem natural all the same.
In short these novels are a joy, and indulgent joy of, occasionally like swimming through chocolate
***this was given to me by author in exchange for an honest review*** ***it will have spoilers, as it is hard to review it without referring to events that happen***
This is good. It was a little slower than previous two. Still with enough twists and turns and betrayls. It was more about Millie and her back story. It does explain why she is the way she is. I still have a problem with her sleeping with everything that has legs. But you do like her more and more by the end of the book. I don't know how I feel about Ari. I hope the ending, while very cryptic, meant that she finally made a decision about putting herself first. But it sounds like Andy had something to say about it..... I will be honest, Greg got on my nerves. In previous books he came off sweet and respectful; in this book all those qualities made him a giant wuss. He knows what he wants but won't fight for it, he is just kind of passive aggressive about it. To me it felt like he was leading them both on and I just wanted him to pick one and stick with it (but that wouldn't make a very good drama now would it). Now just few words about the rest: Bob - bastard; Sol- bastard in the making; Tiffany - not as dumb as originally came off and damn pretty conniving; Lesley - WHY? and still need to know more about her back story; All of the young generation -awe they are just adorable. Now I am in mourning as I need the next book ASAP.

As you would expect. The story started in ‘The Waiting’, continued in ‘The Funeral’ and now in ‘The Watching’ still has the same lack of morals as the others, is still as well written and keeps all the characters you have grown to like or hate, plus a few more. Imagine taking the best bits of ‘Dynasty’, ‘Peyton Place’ and any other bed-hopping family saga you have read or watched and you will have some idea of this world where the tale takes place, but please do read ‘The Waiting’ first if you haven’t already. Fans, like myself of Arianne (the only person in the series who you would have as a friend) will be pleased to note that she gets acquitted of her son Nash’s murder due to forensic evidence and gets on with her life. The various characters are well developed and fascinating to watch as they battle with their rivals. You could easily think you were reading a diary of actual events!

This is another crazy ride with the 2nd installment of the Waiting series! My mind was literally mush after finishing it! I was like....big, huge book hangover!
Like the 1st book, this one touches on all of the characters & stories! They are all pretty much intertwined, much like a crazy soap opera! There's action, twist & turns at every page! It's almost too much going on! I would love to have more books & focus on a few characters each book instead of all at one time! It can be a bit confusing but it helps to have the appendix added to refer back to if you get the characters mixed up!
Good job overall! The end/epilogue was shocking & epic! I'm dying for The Wanting! Take a ride through Louisiana with these insane Cajuns!

Holy cow! This series just keeps getting better. 'The Watching' had such a fierce grip on me from the first page. I literally did not put this book down once I started reading it. As with the first two books in this series, I was pulled in from the start and was left wanting more. The storyline is intense. I loved the way it played out. More secrets were revealed, more love was to be explored and the drama went into overdrive. The characters were just as intriguing from when I first met them in book one. My feelings changed about some of them, both for better or worse, and then there are the ones that I still despise. I absolutely loved the way the authors' wrote this series in a way that I felt like I was a part of the story. I related to some of the circumstances and the characters, despite their flaws. I have to read the next book, like right now. This book, as well as 'The Waiting' series, is a must add to your tbr list. Highly recommended!!
The Watching By: Elizabeth Burgess The Watching is the second book in The Waiting series. This book surpassed any and all expectations I had! I loved getting to know these characters even more. There are a lot of main characters. So I suggest reading them in order. It was help you understand the back stories of each character. This book starts with Millie Douglas. Millie is starting a new beginning after a tragic loss. Now in the previous book I despised Millie. Never in a million years would I think she had any redeeming qualities. Millie ended up being my favorite character! It was very comparable to The Waiting, in the sense that everyone has an agenda. Every character is looking out for themselves and a lot of them are fueled by jealously, power, money and vengeance. All in all, there are a few stand out characters I love and are finally becoming the people you want them to be. This book will keep you on your toes. There are so many plot twists and turns I couldn’t put it down! Definitely a 5 star review! Cannot wait for the next book!

Well, thank god I had a couple of days off work!!!
This story can be very confusing especially if you haven't read the first two books (Go read them, very highly recommended)!!
I'm so very glad for this series, there are a lot of stories involved with a lot of different characters, they all love, loss, hate, sorrow, heartbreak & deception to name just a few!
Even with all of that there is also hope, hope for new beginnings, new relationships, new friendships.
I am thoroughly loving these books, I will post NO SPOILERS!! If you want to know, READ THE BOOKS!!
I just hope more people read this series of books and enjoy them the way I am.
Now have to wait for the next installment, to see what happens next with all the characters.
What a change in character!! Just like life, Millie showed her "human side" but still kept the suspense going. The "pathetic romance relations between Arianne and Gregory was getting at me.... not due to the writing of the story but because I live myself into the story and that is my conclusion about their relationship.
At all Elizabeth, thank you for recommending your books to me, I enjoyed every page and your writing skills is magnificent! The story line and characters kept me spellbound to the pages, and I had to put my other book down for the past 2 months - just to read ( i HAD to read) it!!
Don't be shy, share more of your writings with us!!
SCREAMING!!## What a ride!! An amusement park full of ups and downs, twist and turns! I finished this a week ago. ugh what a book hangover! More in site to the characters, especially Millie! I can say I can understand why she reacted and did the things she did. Not using it as an excuse but coming to that Ahhh moment. I'm still reeling in the ending, I still need to decompose, I need more....like yesterday( hint.) The author didn't let me down, I have a few conclusions, a gut feeling if you must say, but if my theory is correct, great job in deflecting the obvious. BUT seriously, great book and writing, I'm out words, read, refer, pass along!!!!!
wth just happened? oh my god. need to detox. did that just really happen? you must read this series and you must do it in order. that last chapter... blown away.
I have never really been into storylines that are complex and that makes your mind reel. But with this series, i completely love it. Every single character has you hooked and makes you flip between emotions. One minute you hate them and the next you dont. I love books that give you the feels and you can see the dedication that went into this. The series from start to finish is full of deception, betrayal, hate, revenge, love, affairs, its never ending. I cant even use paragraphs because i cannot think straight. Major major flove of this ladies brilliant complex mind!
