I Think We Should Kill Other People

Rate this book
The new laugh-out-loud serial killer thriller from L.M. Chilton, author of Don't Swipe Right and Everyone in the Group Chat Dies.

The nation watched them fall in love. Now someone's watching them die.

Hazel and Marc were paired together on revolutionary new reality TV show Love Synced, in which sophisticated AI matches hopeful lovers based on its perceptive algorithms.

But when it came time to say I Do on camera, Hazel couldn't go through with it, leaving her perfect match at the altar, his family furious and the whole TV production in jeopardy.

Now all she wants to do is fly home. Instead, she's trapped in a tiny isolated airport that's been ground to a halt amidst a massive snow storm... with her ex and his obnoxiously rich family sitting at the gate with her. But when they start turning up dead, a jilted lover is the least of Hazel's worries – there's a serial killer to catch first.

The heart's a fickle thing, so it's no surprise that AI couldn't predict true love for Hazel… But could it help crack the case when a murderer is picking off her almost-in-laws one by one?

Really enjoyed this. Written in the same humourous style as his other books.

The storyline was good - I've not seen it before, quite like this.

The whole dating/reality show format was interesting. Not sure why Hazel pulled away from it so much as, ultimately, she applied for the show in the first place. This is broadly explained later on, but I'd have thought she'd be a bit more into it, on the surface at least.

Anyway, no complaints here, loved it.

L.M Chilton does not disappoint and I couldn't stop listening to this book finishing it in one day!

Taking the reality TV style concept (perfect if you're a fan of Married at first sight) and adding an AI twist, plenty of drama and oh... a dead body! This was an easy read book with lots happening, great characters and a who done it that has you questioning everyone and on edge waiting for a reveal. I'm a huge fan of thriller books that take a reality TV root and when it's done as well as this is proves exactly why. I have seen this kind of angle done before but this still felt fresh and different to the others like it. The humour in this book really brought it to life, I found myself shocked and laughing pretty much at the same time. Chilton gave us a female lead who was witty and smart but far from perfect managing to still feel relatable. The addition of the AI element was fun taking very dark and haunting moments and making them humorous and entertaining.

Most of this story takes place an in airport but I really enjoyed the flashback scenes taking us back to the reality show and that process. I would have liked to have learnt even more about Hazel and I probably would have enjoyed the book even more if it was a bit longer. There were a few character and plot points that confused me at stages but reveals at the end tied everything together very well and made certain things make sense and come together. This was a fun thriller with a concept that felt current and fresh and is sure to appeal to so many different kinds of readers. I would say this is a perfect book for those looking to get into thriller books working as a perfect read to start that.

The audio narration for this book was great! Clear and bringing these characters to life I was able to listen to this at a fast speed and keep up very well.

This is a cozy murder mystery with dark humour and a dash of romance.
Easy to read or listen to in a day. If you are looking a book that doesn't take itself too seriously, can suspend your disbelief easily and or perhaps as an intro to the genre you would most likely enjoy this. However for more seasoned thriller readers you will probably spot those plot holes and there are quite a few as well as miss some character depth. I felt these characters were a bit too one dimensional for my liking.
The narration was performed with humour and each character was easily identifiable especially with the well executed accents, however I felt they lacked some emotion that would have lent some warmth to the book.
Overall good book for beginners but perhaps not for me as a more seasoned reader of thrillers.

Many thanks to Head of Zeus who provided me with a copy of the audiobook via NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.

Loved the authors previous 2 books ‘ ‘Don’t Swipe Right’ and ‘Everyone In The Group Chat Dies’, I liked this one

A bit ‘Married At First Sight’ ish finds us in a remote Norwegian airport where the 2 reality stars ( Marc and Hazel ) and some of Marc’s family are all very jaded and jilted!

And then the murders start

The dark comedy is there and the good chatty narrative but it excelled at the end where everything ‘came together’ and surprisingly and excitingly so ( with a Will Young song featured which made my day )

Am still not sure how the title fits with the story unless I am missing something ( probably )

Fairly enjoyable with a good slab of mystery to keep it intriguing

It's been a mixed bag for me with this author. I wasn't a big fan of their first book (it was a 2 star for me), then I really liked their second book (which was a 4 star) so I went into this with an open mind, hoping for the best, and I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed this!
Going off the blurb this sounded right up my alley and thankfully it didn't let me down.
I liked this right away, the setting was great (a small airport on an island in Norway cut off by a snow storm) which really added to the story.
The humour I have come to expect from this author was here in boat loads and it had me laughing and chuckling throughout.
I also really loved the characters. Our main character Hazel was great, I loved her from the start, so I was fully invested in her and plot which had me hooked throughout.
My favourite character however was CILLA. Yes, she may basically be a talking Smart Watch but the author really made her feel like a real person and I though she was hilarious. This was an absolute genius move by the author and she was a brilliant addition to the plot.
I found myself totally immersed in this story. It was fast paced, entertaining and fun, I loved it!
I can't wait to see what comes next from this author.

Thanks to Aria & Aries for the ARC I received in exchange for an honest review

Gut rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
CAWPILE rating: TBD
Spice: Closed door
ARC publication date: April 9th 2026

Tropes: Murder mystery, isolated location, Married at First Sight, reality TV show, AI bot, family secrets, rags to riches, arranged marriage, forced proximity

Quote
‘Hazel, I have some good news!’ CILLA says. ‘Yes?’ I sit up a bit straighter. ‘What?' 'Statistically, based on your current circumstances, you are more likely to die than go to prison.’

My synopsis
After exposing her fiance's billionaire family's dirty secrets and leaving him at the altar on an AI powered reality TV dating show, all 32yo Hazel Harper wants to do is get off this Norwegian Island. But when a sudden blizzard leaves her stranded overnight in an isolated airport with her (now ex) fiance, his angry family, and an even angrier producer, it's not long until things erupt. When the producer is found dead and the show's reputation-ruining memory cards go missing, Hazel teams up with the AI bot to find the killer and prove her innocence, all while trying to stay alive.

My review
A fun mystery with sarcastic humour and conversational writing that made this an engaging story. I loved the high tension, isolated setting that amped up the drama, with twists and reveals I wasn't expecting. The flashbacks to interview transcripts and events from before the airport scene were cleverly placed to reveal snippets of info that had me enjoying piecing together what really happened on the TV show (and before...).

With thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s got a great setting, it’s a really fun and modern concept, a bit of tongue in cheek commentary. I read an eARC of this book on NetGalley so thank you to the author and the publisher.

This book is largely set in a very remote airport in Norway during a storm. So the isolation is pretty extreme! It’s an awful situation where our main character finds herself trapped at a gate with the worst possible people. The man she just left at the alter and his family. This setting was so entertaining with the creative ways airport features were integrated into some of the dramatic moments in the story. It also brought in unusual challenges as they find most of the staff have gone home and they’re stuck with no communication and only a vending machine for food. It’s a very stressful place to get trapped, even without the family nightmare!

While the bulk of the story takes place in the airport, we do flash back to the events that took place to find our main character trapped there. She had been taking part in a TV programme that aimed to use AI to help people find and marry their soulmate, using data to assess their compatibility leading to a fairytale wedding in a remote Norwegian castle, if they can get their score where it needs to be. The AI was quite funny. The main character consults it to try and make sense of what’s happening and solve the ongoing mystery. Sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes not. Sometimes its statistics are a bit too honest! I found this entertaining and it was an unusual concept. This book felt really modern in some of the concepts it explored, but also rooted in traditional mystery storytelling.

A fantastic and entertaining story!

Married at First sight meets murder in this fast paced closed door mystery with a dating show twist.

“The truth is, the Van Battens have good reason to hate my guts. Because while Marc Van Batten might arguably be the world’s most infuriating man, he’s not the one who jilted their fiancé on their wedding day. That, I’m afraid, would be yours truly. So maybe it’s me, I’m the problem.”

Hazel and Marc were paired together on a reality TV show - where AI matched them together on the basis they’re likely to be compatible. Everyone is flown out for the season finale - the wedding. The only hitch, Hazel runs away from the altar. What’s worse is she runs into her ex in-laws at the airport. And there’s a storm so they can’t fly out. And even worse than that, someone is killing them one by one. With drama and plenty of comedy - this was a fun read!

‘She can offer relationship advice, settle an argument, even predict likely outcomes, like whether Marc and I were going to be happily married. Although, judging by what happened this morning, she’s obviously had a malfunction.’

I enjoyed the AI dating aspect - the idea that it looked at their hobbies, personalities and interests and deemed them a good match. And I loved how it was integrated into trying to solve the mystery of who was responsible for the murders. A topical take on the use of AI in our daily lives.

Overall I enjoyed this one - I love a murder mystery with comedic vibes and this didn’t disappoint. With multiple dramatic reveals and a captivating airport setting - I flew through this book and would recommend for anyone looking for a cosy mystery.

This book has everything a trashy tv show contains where contestants are looking for "love" with the added twist of an AI deciding whether they are truly matched then takes it to a isolated airport with drama of a wedding dashed and a serial killer taking out the family! Lots of funny laugh moments, especially with CILLA giving Hazel quite sensible advice (mostly) on how to find out who the killer might be and how she can survive the ordeal. Though you know with AI, they can be right but when they go wrong... lets just say you can't trust anybody stuck at that airport in the storm!

This was quite entertaining to listen to with quirky, and sometimes killer characters, lots of drama (being jilted at the wedding tends to wind people up), plus how it was all recorded to be used for the Love Synched show and many suspects with reasons to want certain people dead. And everybody is hiding something! I am glad I wasn't invited but it makes for a great tale.

I can say that this was a great audiobook to listen to! The narrator, Mei Mei Macleod did a great job in bringing Hazel, the other characters, and of course don't forget CILLA, to life and their crazy deadly night at the airport! Many thanks to NetGalley and Head of Zeus for giving me the chance to listen to this audiobook!

Review of ‘I Think We Should Kill Other People’ by L.M. Chilton, due to be published on 9 April 2026 by Aria & Aries, Head of Zeus.

Hazel signs herself up to a new ‘social experiment’ dating show, Love Synched - the prize? Marrying an eligible bachelor who is kept secret until a love match is made.

After being issued with wearable technology, CILLA, Hazel is found to be soulmate to Marc, who is indeed a very eligible bachelor and heir to his family fortune. It’s a dream come true, right? Well it is, until Hazel leaves Marc at the altar, and is shocked to come face to face with his furious family at the tiny, isolated airport just as a blizzard rolls in and grounds their flight home. As if that’s not insufferable enough, bodies start piling up, a killer is on the loose and no one is seemingly safe or not under suspicion!

This was a fun and quick read, I liked Hazel’s character a lot. She was sassy and headstrong, determined to uncover the truth, all whilst keeping huge secrets of her own. Characters were well developed, the storyline engaging and amusing. The twists unfurling like springs at the end, making for a very satisfying recommended read.

I could not put this book down, I read it in just over 24 hours. It feels incredibly British in the best way possible. I loved all the little modern pop culture references sprinkled throughout, and the mix of genres is so fun. It’s a thriller, but it also feels like a messy romance novel at the same time…

The story follows Hazel, who signs up for a new reality TV show where AI is supposed to find her soulmate. Everything is going smoothly… until she jilts her almost husband at the altar and escapes to the airport to fly home, only to find him and his entire family waiting for the exact same flight back to the mainland.

Such a witty thriller, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

This was a really quick witted and funny read. One you could easily read in the span of a day.

As someone who consistently reads thrillers, I did guess who it was early on however that didn’t takeaway from the story and I enjoyed finding out about the AI experiment and how they ended up where they are.

I know this isn’t a romance but I would have liked a bit more on Hazel and Marc in the two week build up to the wedding to really feel any chemistry between them.

I think many people are going to find this fun read. Thank you to Head of Zeus for the proof copy.

Would you apply to a new reality TV show that uses AI to help you find the love of your life?

Set mostly in the present tense in an isolated Norwegian airport, the story is told from two time periods - now and during the filming of the TV show. Whodunnit murders, romance, sometimes unhelpful technology and a runaway bride…

Really loved the concept of this book! Had elements that felt very Black Mirror-esque (my favourite TV show).

Will definitely be checking out other books written by L.M. Chilton!

4.5 stars!

Just from the cover, it's clear this read promises to be fun, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable! This is exactly how you sell me on a book. If the cover grabs my attention, I'm in!

Hazel and Marc are contestants on a reality TV show, Love Synced, which uses AI to match couples. However, Hazel leaves Marc at the altar, leading to family discontent and production troubles. Trapped at a snowbound airport with her ex and his wealthy family, Hazel faces a deadly situation as members start turning up dead. As she grapples with her failed romance, she must also solve the mystery of the serial killer targeting her almost-in-laws, questioning whether AI can assist in this dire situation.

The story unfolds across various locations, which is not your typical multiple POVs scenario. Instead, we hop between various settings and timelines, allowing us to piece together what transpired both before and during the wedding. We meet Hazel and Mark, alongside his seemingly complicated family. Both characters carry their own baggage and secrets that eventually come to light. I must commend the author for skillfully keeping everything under wraps for so long while maintaining my interest. I was genuinely blown away by the twists, revelations, and unexpected connections that popped up! And let's not forget the unhinged characters - they definitely add an extra layer of excitement!

As someone new to this author's work, I really appreciated the clever, suspenseful, and often humorous writing style, balanced with just the right touch of seriousness. At one point, I found myself questioning whom to trust, as only a handful of characters were stranded at the airport. As their motives and secrets began to reveal themselves, the plot thickened and things got tense.

This narrative is unique because it begins at the end, allowing us to rewind and watch events unfold in real time. I might sound a bit crazy describing this murder mystery as a fun experience, but honestly, it was! I believe this book will appeal to a wide range of readers, offering a blend of mystery, romance, unexpected twists, and a mix of both happy and sad moments.

While incorporating AI into the story is becoming a common practice, this author handled it tastefully. Despite my reservations about AI, it's a reality we're facing. I've noticed many boostagrammers using AI for their posts and images, but in this story, CILLA is utilized delicately. The author effectively reminds us that no AI can replicate the nuances of human intuition, decision-making, or matters of the heart. They simply can't be quantified.

This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys the chaos of wedding season, reality TV shows, or is simply in the mood for a dark and twisty read filled with humor. You might walk away with a new perspective on love, friendship, and perhaps even survival while stranded at an airport! When it comes to a secluded setting, there's nothing quite like it to get your heart racing! So, if you're looking for something light-hearted, this should be your next pick! Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to learn about airplane transponders and where to find them - you never know! Ha!

Thank you, Gallery/Scout Press and NetGalley, for the gifted DRC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you NetGalley and Gallery/Scout Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

If you’re going into “I Think We Should Kill Other People” by L.M. Chilton expecting a dark, intense thriller, that’s not really what this is. This is more like chaotic, tongue-in-cheek murder mystery meets reality TV drama with a surprising amount of humor and just a little bit of romance thrown in.

The setup is honestly wild in the best way: Hazel signs up for a reality dating show where an AI matches you with your “perfect soulmate,” and somehow that leads to her almost marrying rich-boy Marc before she literally leaves him at the altar. Cut to: they both end up stranded in a remote Norwegian airport during a storm with his absolutely awful family, and then people start dying. One by one.

The airport setting is such a fun choice. It’s isolated, weirdly claustrophobic, and forces all these characters (who already have tension) to be stuck together while everything spirals. Plus, the way the book uses random airport details (vending machines, empty gates, no staff around) actually adds to both the humor and the chaos.

Tone-wise, this book does not take itself too seriously, and that’s kind of the whole point. It’s dark, but in a “did that just happen?” kind of way rather than a gritty or disturbing one. The deaths are creative (one involving a Toblerone, which is iconic honestly), but the vibe stays more fun than frightening. It’s very much a cozy-ish mystery with bite.

Hazel as a main character really carries the story. She’s sarcastic, messy, and definitely not perfect; she’s got secrets, makes questionable decisions, and is constantly trying to stay one step ahead of everything going on. Her banter with Marc is actually a highlight too. They’ve got that “we probably shouldn’t work but somehow we do” kind of chemistry.

One of the more unique elements is the AI assistant woven into the story. Sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes it’s completely useless, but it adds this modern, slightly absurd layer that keeps things feeling fresh. There are also flashbacks to the reality show (plus interview snippets), which slowly reveal what really happened leading up to the wedding and why literally everyone might have a motive.

Plot-wise, it’s very twisty. You’re constantly questioning who’s lying, who’s hiding something, and who might be the killer. Some twists are genuinely surprising, others are a little easier to guess, but the final reveal ties things together in a pretty satisfying way.

That said, it’s not perfect. If you’re a seasoned thriller reader, you’ll probably notice some plot holes or moments where things don’t totally hold up if you think too hard about them. Some characters can feel a bit one-dimensional, and the tension isn’t always as high as it could be. But honestly? This book is way more about the ride than the realism.

Overall, this is a super entertaining, fast-paced read that combines mystery, dark humor, and a modern reality TV twist. It’s the kind of book you can fly through in a day and just have a good time with. If you’re looking for something fun, a little ridiculous, and not too heavy but still packed with drama, secrets, and murder, then this one’s definitely worth picking up.

A laugh out loud murder mystery thriller for readers who enjoy -
🔍 Don’t Swipe Right & Everyone in the Group Chat Dies
🔍 Locked room mysteries/isolated settings
🔍 Forced proximity romance
🔍 Reality TV gone wrong

➜ Thank you to Aria & Aries, NetGalley & L.M. Chilton for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC. This is my honest opinion & I’m sharing it voluntarily.

~ plot ~

Unlucky in love, Hazel signs up to ‘Love Synced’, a new experimental dating show that uses CILLA, an AI matchmaking system to help find your perfect match.
She’s paired with Marc, a billionaire heir to his family drinks empire. However, as it often does - technology fails & with the cameras rolling Hazel leaves Marc at the alter.
But things only go from bad to worse when she finds herself snowed in at an isolated airport with the very man she just ran from & his less than savoury family.
And just when Hazel thinks it couldn’t get any more awkward, bodies start piling up around her.
CILLA may have failed in helping Hazel find love but can it succeed in helping her catch a killer?

~ review ~

This book was an absolute hoot! Dark humour is my thing & I Think We Should Kill Other People was overflowing with it. Having not read either of L. M. Chilton’s previous releases, I went into this naively, intending to read over a few sittings. HA! How wrong I was… This isn’t the kind of book you read in small chunks, it’s a one sitter, unputdownable, entertaining, laugh out loud whodunnit full of twists & turns that grabs your attention & doesn’t let go.
[My only complaint? While incredibly apt (alongside Milka, it’s obviously the only acceptable go to airport duty-free snack) my love of Toblerone has now been slightly tainted🍫…]

L. M. Chilton’s writing style is one I can fully get behind & I’m so excited to read his 2 earlier releases.
I got totally lost in this story. It was engaging, intriguing & had me locked in. The pacing was spot on, not once did I zone out or lose interest & the tone? Hilarious! Despite being a murder mystery, it was light, playful & things never felt too heavy. The small cast of characters kept things easy to follow & although there were a couple of highly insufferable people, they were still so entertaining.

In terms of the singular isolated airport setting, I was a little bit worried about how I’d fare. In the past I’ve found books that have gone down a similar single setting route to be quite tedious & constricted. However, that definitely wasn’t the case here. Had it been an issue, Hazel & Mark’s well placed flashbacks took us away from the airport & would have easily broken up any monotony. They also did a great job of laying out backstories & answering lingering questions.

This is the first book I’ve read that includes the use of AI & as someone who finds the whole concept rather terrifying (watched one too many web based crime shows…) I actually really enjoyed the inclusion of CILLA. It was seamlessly interwoven into the story & worked as if it was its own character. Very clever.

Overall, a brilliantly entertaining, easy to follow read that I would definitely recommend!

I wouldn’t exactly call this book a thriller or a romcom but I did have a lot of fun with it!

Book rating: 4-4.5⭐️
Audio performance rating: 4.5-5⭐️

I listened to the audiobook and the narration was so good! I was able to listen with 2.0x speed and I didn’t have any issues following the dialogues. There is one narrator but she did magnificent job with the dialogues and overall the whole performance. The audio is 7h20min long which made it easy to finish under 2 days.
The storyline is pretty unique and interesting. The execution didn’t give me the usual thriller/murder mystery vibes. It somehow is a combination of crime, mystery, thriller and romance but despite the killings it doesn’t have the serial killer-y vibes. The romance is a subplot, more like a background story. It was simply a good time and highly entertaining listen to me. I was actively NOT trying to figure out the killer but even with such intention, I did figure out some of the plot twists.
Basically it’s a story with multiple killings happening over the course of one night when the group of people is stuck at the airport but it doesn’t give you anxiety or twist your stomach (which is the usual for me when I go for thriller-thriller). (I mean it as a compliment).

There is one POV 1st person narration with kind of dual timeline - you have airport (current) chapters but they are mixed with making of the reality TV show (throwbacks) chapters. Hazel - a girl with some skeletons in her past decides to take part in new reality TV show (sorry, social experiment) that uses AI (sth like Apple Watch with Siri) to find a perfect match for Marc - the bachelor, heir of one of the wealthiest UK families. It was super fun and interesting both - the storyline of how they matched, and the murder mystery part at the airport. The role of AI in the story was pretty well balanced and well written into the story.
I enjoyed the plot twists. They were fun, unexpected (even if some of my guesses happened to be true) and overall well placed and executed.
It wasn’t exactly a laugh out loud read for me but it did have a couple of very funny moments and as a whole was kept in mostly light and funny writing style.

There were some details that you shouldn’t think too hard about - like why they stayed at the airport overnight, why she was still in her wedding dress but the type of writing made it quite easy for me to ignore those little things and just ignore for the sake of having fun with the story.

The title and cover might indicate as it’s a romance about serial killers, but it’s not exactly that. It’s not a thriller, nor a slasher. While there are multiple killings happening in this book, it’s closer to murder mystery with a romance subplot.

Big thanks to Head of Zeus Audiobooks for NetGalley ALC.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the narrator is Mei Mei Macleod and I enjoyed her narration enough to put her on my list of “if they narrate it, I’m listening to it” narrators.

This darkly humorous whodunnit offers an entertaining balance of reality TV satire and murder mystery as I Think We Should Kill Other People follows wannabe bride Hazel as she signs up for Love Synched, a dating show that sounds like a mash up of The Bachelor, 90 Day Fiancé, and Runaway Bride, where she’s matched with the wealthy and polished Marc Van Batten, the privileged heir to a drinks empire.

At first glance, the title of this book does feel slightly misleading as it had me expecting something centred around married serial killers. But reading the blurb quickly revealed something far more playful, and I was immediately intrigued with the concept of combining AI with reality television and I wasn’t disappointed. Set in the main at a remote Norwegian airport during a severe snowstorm, the staff have deserted the terminal leaving behind a small group of passengers. So, following the wedding that never was Hazel has the misfortune of finding herself stuck with her jilted groom’s deeply unpleasant family, easily one of the most disagreeable groups I’ve encountered in fiction, with only a lone airline steward, who chose to remain behind, as an ally. Unsurprisingly, tensions escalate, and before long, the bodies begin to pile up, and Hazel must fight to stay alive until help arrives.

Initially the narrative feels a little disjointed, opening at the airport with readers in the dark about how the characters got to this point but then Hazel and Marc’s backstory is gradually revealed through the well placed flashbacks interwoven throughout the story and things begin to fall into place and make sense. Hazel emerges as the standout character, using the AI system AKA Cilla, as a kind of Dr. Watson to her Sherlock as she tries to solve the murders before she becomes the killer’s next victim. Still, it’s clear from early on that she has secrets of her own.

Taking place over several hours, the plot packed with twists, turns, and plenty of red herrings sets a quick pace. The tone stays light, with a distinct tongue-in-cheek vibe of humour despite its distinctly claustrophobic setting of the deserted airport and, while the identity of the killer feels slightly predictable if not their motives, I don’t feel that this book is supposed to be a tightly wound thriller but written more for the pure entertainment value it provides. Yes, if you look too closely, there are a few plot inconsistencies, but they didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment. As my first experience with L.M. Chilton, this book has definitely encouraged me to explore more of their work.

The first thing that grabbed my attention about this new audiobook was the author. I’d recently read ‘Everyone in the Chatroom Dies’ by L.M. Chilton, and enjoyed his quirky, modern style of writing. Chilton seems to be carving out a space in the market for technology-influenced mysteries, and this latest book is no exception. The blend of reality TV satire and serial-killer thriller felt fresh, and this latest novel delivered on its promise of once-again mixing humour and danger.

The idea of an AI matchmaking system (from the fictional show Love Synced) gone wrong was actually more convincing that you might imagine and I was entertained by it all the way through. It felt fresh and unexplored, yet at the same time dystopian and rather eerie. The reality dating show premise felt like a clever commentary on modern dating culture whilst also reflecting society’s fast-growing reliance on AI in our daily lives.

As a protagonist, Hazel is flawed and chaotic but also relatable. She’s got her faults but is far from unlikeable, and I much preferred her to Marc and his wealthy family, who all felt somewhat exaggerated. They grew in depth as the novel progressed, but I felt that most of the novel’s humour was based on their wealth, and this sometimes fell a little flat. Whilst the book is described a ‘laugh-out-loud, the humour didn’t always land for me, and it felt rather thin and forced. However, there is an underlying sense of dark comedy which, when mixed with the murder-mystery tension and frequent flashbacks, was effective in keeping my attention right to the end.

The one thing that didn’t really work for me was the setting of a snow-bound Norwegian airport. Yes, it was a way of creating a closed-room scenario – and goodness knows it must be difficult to think up a new one – but it seemed rather contrived and unrealistic. So many things didn’t make sense: Where were the crew? Why could Hazel check onto the flight when it was already boarding? Where did the man repacking his suitcase at the beginning disappear to? I felt that the setting did make more sense as the novel progressed but it was certainly off-putting at the start, and I was rather pleased when the characters began to break out of the rather limiting space of the departure gate towards the end of the novel.

Mei Mei Macleod’s narration was upbeat and chirpy. She captured the comedic timing effectively, although I’m really not keen on her voicing of male characters, especially the posh ones, and found this somewhat irritating. Her narration did, however, enhance the novel’s satire and tension, and overall leant a positive element to my experience of the novel.

‘I Think We Should Kill Other People’ offered an interesting commentary on AI, reality TV and our modern obsession with true crime. The satire felt a little overplayed, but there were some moments of sharp observation, and it stands up well against other humorous thrillers.

Crime mystery set mainly in NORWAY, in a tiny airport on a tiny island

Coming 9 April 2026

The novel opens in a tiny airport on a tiny Norwegian island in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. Marc and Hazel were matched on the ‘social experiment’ set of TV’s Love Synced, powered by an AI wristband called CILLA. Their ensuing wedding was to be filmed, but Hazel has just pulled out of the ceremony leaving the Van Batten family angry and upset. There is only one way out and that is via the airport, where they all unfortunately have to congregate interminably because the weather has come in and the flight is hugely delayed. The Van Batten mother has a sharp and cutting tongue aimed at Hazel, but Mark is up for trying to get along for the duration of the delay.

The trouble is, the film of their aborted nuptials will soon be in the public domain, causing all round humiliation and profound embarrassment, it proved to be a right bust-up with accusations levied and punches thrown. The film company is rubbing their hands in glee, the family is not.

And then one person associated with the wedding is found dead at the airport, slumped on the toilet with a Toblerone rammed down their throat. There will be no outside help, given the weather, so Hazel, who still has her AI CILLA wristband, knows what she has to do. And then there is another body to deal with…

Much of the story is set in the isolated airport which is atmospherically described. Other chapters are set in the South of England.

The author has clearly hit on a successful formula, to wit a young woman who finds herself embroiled in a situation and then tasks herself with getting to the bottom of the inevitable deaths. His stories are written with wit and bounce and are very easy to read.

* AI to find your soulmate
* A rich family and a "working class girl"
* All of this drama, the personal differences and the AI, is filmed and made into a reality show (camouflaged as an "experiment")
* Dual timeline: starting with right after the wedding, and going back to when this "soulmate" project started

A.K.A: Married at First Sight + AI + murderer mystery

not bad, but ...in spite of all these things that made me pick up this books, and although the first few pages had me convinced I'd love it, I just did not.
- the reality show aspect and the AI was the most interesting, and unfortunately, also the most underdeveloped
- the rich family of brats and selfish people became a predictable cliche of unlikeability
- too many twist, making the story feel less and less believable.
- also, with so many twists, plot holes start occuring
- the relationship between to two main characters felt ... Well, it did not feel. I didn't see or feel any chemistry and the whole relationship felt construded and artificial
- the characters felt under developed, lacking in personality and depth. They were basically just doing things and saying their lines, without any personality showing.
- several small factual errors, like saying they got a voucher for 10 kroner, thats ONE POUND. No airport in Norway would give this small a voucher ,as you probably could not buy any single item (maybe a lollipop of you find them sold individually). Very unnecessary and slopy mistake as this is a very easy thing to google.

Also! To end on a better note: although I was disappointed, I do think many people will enjoy this. If you like unlikeble characters, twisty plots, and juicy drama with these settings and themes, maybe give it a chance. But if you, like me, have read a lot of thrillers, and especially if those have some of these characteristics (AI, reality TV, rich and spoiled family), then this might just feel like "just another one", a book trying to stand out and be different by combining humor, crime and romance, but unfortunately becoming just messy and too unrealistic
