She calls him Master. She wears his collar. But make no mistake---he kneels for her.
Jacoby thought he knew what he was getting into.
He didn't.
Eris doesn't love the way you're supposed to. She loves like a knife to the throat — precise, possessive, and impossible to escape. She'll call him Master. She'll wear his ring. She'll let him think he's in control.
And she'll bury anyone who tries to take him from her.
I really wanted to like this one, but I have to be honest and admit I didn’t. There were certain aspects of the book that I loved, but they were outweighed by my frustrations.
The beginning is way too insta-love for my taste. Eris and Jacoby just met and they’re talking about each other as if they’ve known each other for months.
I really had to get used to Eris. She’s basically cat - a batshit one. But don’t you dare use the C-word when she can hear it because you might not survive. She’s psychotic, though it sometimes felt like she was acting like a petulant child instead of the scary, manipulative psycho. At one point I couldn’t help but compare her to other delusional characters I’ve read about (Tobias from Psychotic Obsession, Ren from Painter’s Obsession for example) where I never felt like that. This does get a lot better further in the book though in my opinion. What I absolutely did love about her though is how she could be so deadpan. Some of her replies to Jacoby or her sisters or her parents were hilarious because she delivered them in such a dry way.
I felt like Jacoby was too soft for Eris. Yes, he has ✨the thing✨ that happened in his past but besides that he genuinely seemed like a good kid - definitely not like Eris. Seeing how he puts up with SO MUCH, I would have liked to see a bit more of his unhinged side and to see him push back a bit more. Jacoby can be very hot and cold about Eris, especially in the second half of the book. He loves her despite everything, but then he’s scared of her, only to swing back to being completely devoted again, followed by him needing space. I did think it was a bit unrealistic in the beginning that he put up with all Eris’s shit just like that despite only knowing her for such a small amount of time, so I was glad when he started questioning things, but he would go back and forth so fast sometimes it nearly gave me whiplash. For me, Jacoby’s feelings toward Eris started feeling more and more like Stockholm Syndrome than actual love. He was being manipulated into staying in the relationship and Eris walked all over him. Though I must say, this did absolutely keep me on edge - was he going to leave her in the end or would he stay? I honestly did not know for sure until the very ending of the book.
A small detail I also loved is how the POVs are indicated with ‘Apex’ and ‘Prey’ instead of just their names.
It’s a pretty thick book with about a thousand pages, but there’s a blank space between each paragraph so you can read through the pages quite quickly. It definitely doesn’t feel like a thousand pages. Besides the blank spaces, it simply reads very smoothly. I like the writing style and the book did make me laugh more than once, but I have to admit I had some difficulty getting into the story. I can definitely see why this would work for other readers though.
And even though this story might not have been it for me, I’m going to keep an eye out for Eliza Nichols because I would love to read her future work.
I DEVOURED all 1009 pages of Master in basically one sitting and I genuinely do not even know how to function after this book.
Dark romance mixed with horror/thriller??? Literally inject it into my veins. This was dark, brutal, obsessive, violent, toxic, addictive, and somehow still heartbreakingly beautiful underneath all the chaos.
Eris and Jacoby????? Absolutely disastrous together. A trainwreck. A wildfire. A psychological spiral. And I was obsessed with every single second of it.
This is NOT your typical dark romance. There’s no softening the edges here. No magical redemption arc trying to clean up the damage. The darkness in this book feels sharp and real and ugly and intoxicating in the best possible way.
And ERIS??? Oh my god.
I have NEVER connected to a character so deeply in my life.
The black sheep energy. The sharp edges. The emotional isolation. Feeling “too much” and not enough at the same time. The rage underneath the hurt. The self-destruction. The refusal to be softened for other people’s comfort.
I saw pieces of myself in her that honestly made this book hit almost uncomfortably hard at times.
And the chemistry between her and Jacoby??? Absolutely INSANE.
Dark. Toxic. Beautiful. Consuming.
The tension had me kicking my feet one second and questioning my morals the next 😭💀
And the spice??? HELLO????? Some of those scenes are going to live in my head rent free for the foreseeable future because WOW. Dream-worthy. Filthy. Perfectly written for the tone of this story.
This wasn’t just a book I read. This felt like an experience. Like slowly descending into madness with these characters and enjoying every second of it.
Hands down one of my favorite reads of the YEAR already and I honestly cannot stop thinking about it.
If you love: 🖤 morally gray/morally void characters 🖤 horror mixed with dark romance 🖤 toxic obsessive love stories 🖤 emotionally damaging chemistry 🖤 biker MMCs 🖤 psychologically messy FMCs 🖤 dark atmospheric chaos
READ THIS.
But seriously check trigger warnings first because this book absolutely does not pull punches.
Hot and weird... that's exactlv what Eris is She's not iust a woman who knows what she wants..she knows how to get shit done too. Never sloppy. No, Eris is never sloppy Calculated. that's the word for her. Anc pattern recognition? That's her game. Jacolbv? Poor. sweet Jacolbv. He has no idea what he's gotten himself into... and when he does realise? Well, there's no escaping. Not that he wants to, does he? Coby and Eris share a secret. The difference' Eris doesn't feel remorse... not like our friend Joaquin. I could practicallv see the sweat glistening off his skin, the tremble in his hands I'm not usuallv one for pet play, but it's a maior part of the story because Eris is every bit a predator. Never underestimate the power vou think vou have- she knows exactly how to play prey, only to cut vou down where you stand. Like a kitten- small, soft, unassuming... unti the claws come out. Razor sharp. And they will draw blood. This book had me anawing my fingers, laughing at the sheer unhinged energy, and somehow still smiling at the devotion anc love...even if the love is forced down your throat like a bottle of wine (Though something tells me Jacolby might like it that way anyway ). The spice scenes were next level hot! That's an easy 10/10!
Master is book 1 in the Predator series. This story is wild and unhinged but full of action and entertainment. Eris is a very unique woman. I wouldn't dare call her crazy. She is the type of woman that doesn't just love. She consumes you with her whole being. She is a predator and needs to be tamed. In comes Jacoby. I really thought he would be the one to tame her a bit. Especially bringing out the crate. But then she learns his secret. Eris is chaotic and acts out of emotions. Yet, she is still so controlled and masterful. I loved the dynamic between her and Coby. The story is well written and literally keeps you hooked. I thought the story was a bit long, which... sometimes, has a hard time holding my attention. But the plot literally kept drawing my back in. It's so twisty. You can't predict what's coming next. I loved it. Can't wait for book 2.
I just finished reading this masterpiece. For me it has everything, it's dark, smart, well written, very spicy and fun... It starts with a bang (literally), and it keeps you wanting for more, it keeps you wondering what crazy thing will happen now. The dynamics between the characters are well defined and explained and it all makes sense in an insane way... If you have, check your TW... Thank you Eliza for this gem, can't wait to see what you come up next
Wow...just wow! This book had me hooked from the very beginning! It pulled you through so many different emotions and definitely did not think the ending was going to be what it was, well there where some twists throughout too. This book is crazy, dark, insane, and I loved every second of it! I could NOT put this book down.
I’m going to do my absolute best at explaining this wild ride without giving away anything, because no one likes the secrets to be revealed. Sooo FUCKING OBSESSED! I was hooked at the first line in chapter one. I literally said… YUP! (insert Step Brother gif here) Wow what an insane… sorry, wait… not insane… not crazy… no no not psycho… just a perfectly normal amazing pitch black dark romance story!! (Totally an inside joke… you should read the book!) I was cracking up and audibly gasping from the beginning. I love when an author can make a character’s emotional/mental state transfer in real time. Was I anxious at times… YES absolutely, I could feel it through the pages. Did I like it?! Again, hell yeah and it made me feel ALIVE. Wink. Every tense scene, every secret conversation, every physical touch makes you feel immersed in this book. I appreciate how Eliza wasn’t shy with the gore. It made the intensity in the characters stand out… NO, SHINE!! Some authors are light with it or afraid to dig deeper and explain every splatter and gurgle, but that's what in my opinion makes a book stand out as pitch black vs dark. It’s like a slasher film with bad actors and shitty makeup. But this was insane… no not insane… totally normal, totally sane. (Again this inside joke! JUST READ IT!!) The FMC and MMC dynamic was intense in the best way. I loved how raw and powerful everything felt. The D/S dynamic to the relationship was absolutely perfect. It gave another dimension to the relationship that was so important in the plot of it all, and made the spice fucking hot. Sooooo HOT!! Then adding in the back and forth banter between not only the FMC & MMC but also the side characters it took the book up a level. The family aspect was so well thought out and executed that it only added to the storyline. While reading I was enjoying every twist and turn. I’m always trying to diagnose the situation and see where the book's heading but I felt like with how much of a wild card our FMC was I never knew what direction the book was going to go. In the end I love how the book ended!! I was super shocked but also not surprised because well “nothing ever goes wrong, and no mistakes are ever made.” I absolutely recommend you pick up Eliza Nichols debut book Master. Please check your triggers or don’t it’s more fun that way! 🖤💋
