Asher's Rescue

Rate this book
Life on Journey-5 might be difficult and lonely, but Asher is doing his best to be happy there. He doesn’t have to spend his days terrified that someone might find out his secret, and that counts for a lot.

Because Asher’s secret is that he was born a boy. And on Vader-X7, his home colony, boys… are sent to the kitchens. Asher might have trouble finding enough Human-safe food all the time on Journey-5, but at least he doesn’t have anyone questioning why he refuses to eat meat.

One day, when Asher is out foraging, he comes across two beings he’s never seen before. Big and blue and reptilian, these two aliens, these Dresht, want something very specific from Asher.

And Asher can’t understand a single thing they say.

Asher’s Rescue is a standalone story in the Alien Clutch universe and has a 5 dove rating for MMM threesome, soft loving noncon (at first), a language barrier, lifestyle bondage, object insertion, cock warming, disordered eating, and a well-deserved HEA

I hate to say this but I don't think this lived up to my expectations. Overall, I felt it did have some enjoyable moments and I really loved the general idea, but I just really had high hopes that I'd enjoy this a lot more, not only since this is one of my favorite authors, but also because I really like this series and I was excited that one of the characters I was very interested in finally got his book.

I've been waiting for Asher's story since I read The Falls. I absolutely adored him during the play date between him, his aliens, and the three main characters from The Alien Clutch series. It was hot and I found his character, being so confused in this new enviroment due to translation problems, to be intriguing. Of course I wanted more of him and the aliens.

Here is where I start listing my issues. I have to say that even if I didn't read The Falls prior to this, I think I still would've had some problems. The main one is that I expected Asher to be more of a fighter. In The Falls, we get to know he's scared as shit and continues fighting back against the aliens and even another human. Here, I was disappointed that he fell for the conditioning that fast. Only a few days had passed and the book length certainly didn't help. It took me out of the story.

Then there's the fact that I felt like the book made Asher too... dumb at times. As example, some scenes where he had the opportunity to say something but didn't. I know it's for plot reasons, but I still felt the excuse was too cheap and it made him look dumb too. It would've made more sense if he were more distressed and took all the chances he had, but he didn't.

Besides that, most of the smut scenes were great as expected from D. Dove. I especially loved the object insertion. I did feel they became repetitive at some point, although I guess it makes sense since this is technically erotica. I still needed something else in between the sex though.

The best thing for me from this entire book and my favorite scene too was the one that came near the end. I even wanted it to be longer instead of just one chapter. I love when it all comes together and that part was very hot as well. I need more of Asher and that other character!

Ultimately, this is a standalone that has a lot of continous smut scenes so if anyone doesn't mind, this would be for them. It has some dark elements, as expected from the 5 dove rating, but it turns out a kind of sweet story by the end. I'm glad Asher got a happy ending either way.

This is an ARC review.

To preface, I love the Alien Clutch series. I've read all the books including the extra, the Falls, and was really excited for this book. Unfortunately I found Asher's Rescue kinda boring.

Despite being a 5 Dove rating there was very little angst/trauma especially if you've read the Alien Clutch series. I'd say it's more of a 4. My biggest issue was the disconnect I felt from Asher as the POV character. Asher could not understand the Dresht for a good portion of the story however everything was translated for the reader. So when Asher was scared because he thought these aliens were going to eat him or were keeping him as a toy I knew he was completely safe and loved. This removed any potential suspense or trauma I could feel on Asher's behalf. I even found myself a little annoyed at the way Asher acted since I frequently forgot he could not understand the Dresht. This issue started from page 8 so it negatively colored the rest of the book for me.

I was also disappointed that Asher also gave into his situation fast. Even though it's noncon, Asher loved what's being done to him when he doesn't think he's about to be killed. The only thing stopping him from being comfortable as a mate to the Dresht from day 2 is that he could not understand them. I thought and hoped that he'd put up more resistance like Lee did but no. His background made him ripe pickings for the Dresht. They didn't even have a season with Asher, something I was looing forward to.

Speaking of Asher's partners, Vrayl and Trenet were just kind of nothing for their characterization. I would not be able to tell them apart from Eral and Ronnet if they had a conversation together.

The chapter with Asher's POV of the Falls extra was fun but short. I just wish there was a bit more of what I've come to expect from the Courier Verse in this book.

I loved Dove's other Courier Verse books, and read them often. I've been *dying* to get back into this world and explore more of the Dresht culture -- and Asher's book did deliver that for me. Do I wish it was longer? Always. I will also note that I think it benefits the reader to read the Alien Clutch books before Asher's.

I was given an advance copy by the author in return for an honest review.

Non Spoiler-y thoughts: I loved Asher, I adored his mates, and this is more of the goodness that Alien Clutch gives. If you liked those, I think you'll enjoy this too.

Asher's Rescue is a Dove 5, with all that comes attached to that.

Spoilers:

One of the things I love about Dove's mind break stories is that each one makes sense for the character. For Lee, it was slow, back and forth, with a catalyst that broke him. For Asher, it was the realisation that he was loved, that he was wanted. I loved learning more about the Dresht language, and I'd love to hear more about the culture - I'm a nerd for cultures and the Dresht seem so interesting - and while it was shorter than Alien Clutch, I felt like it was very much a sweet story and did a good job of showing Asher's worries and fears against his mate's concerns. I would have loved more, of course, I would have loved seeing Asher get to explore a Season, and to see the universe with them, but I devoured this book in a couple of hours, I was absolutely hooked. I think the way the language barrier was handled did add to the story, and the combined confusion made me laugh a few times.

Dove's writing is beautiful as always, and for me, the defining difference in book reviews is 'would I read it again' and yes, I think Asher is adorable and I'd be there with bells on to read more of his story.

I have finally been fed by Dove after years of starving and only more of the courier verse could satisfy me. Absolutely no one can do soft loving noncon like Dove can and this was everything I could ask for. Asher was so easy to fall and in love with as a character and the language barrier between him and his Dresht was chef’s kiss, poor baby was so scared that they wanted to eat him and didn’t care about him. There is no mindbreak ending here like with the previous books and I enjoyed Asher falling in love with his Dresht mates for real because he finally felt safe and cherished and that’s all he ever wanted after all the hardships he has endured. My only complaint is that it was too short I could have read 600 pages of this and it still would not have been enough I will never stop begging Dove to continue this series please this is the only thing that can satisfy my fix

Soft loving non con at first. What the fuck is that trigger warning? First of all, the non con is for most of the book. And it's not soft and loving. It's rape, the MC keeps doing everything to make them stop, feels horrible, cries, fucking dissociates, and the love interests just keep raping him over and over thinking he likes it. Where's the soft in that? Also, since when does lifestyle bondage mean getting reduced to nothing? Cause the MC is gagged, bound, and blindfolded. Basically just an object. Might as well just make a dildo your main character. And lastly, where, WHERE did the author put a warning for rape by a side character?? Cause that shit is not something everyone wants to read. So you write whatever you want, even if it's not to everyone's liking, but put triggers, please. I'm not saying that authors should know every potential trigger ofc, but rape? That's basic.

This is for hard core alien lovers and part of the Alien Clutch series. Asher is a human who ends up in the care of two aliens who treat him like they think he wants to be treated. Only Asher and the aliens don’t understand each other so miscommunication and A LOT of spicy moments ensue. There is some heavy stuff so watch your triggers. But if you’ve read and enjoyed D. Dove’s books (LOVED Intoxicant), then you know what you’re getting yourself into! — Thank you to author D. Dove for this ARC.

Wow, was waiting for a continuation from the clutch series and d.dove did not disappoint.

Loved the back story, and leading up to events, and a detailed description of what venigash was from the clutch series, always wondered what they did.

D.dove thanks for continuing the series I can only hope there's more coming in the clutch series further in the future.

After reading The Falls, I was eager to read Asher's story. D. Dove didn't disappoint! I found Asher's character much more complex than Lee's; we learn more about his past and the hardships he endured before being rescued. My only complaint is that it was really short. I would have loved more! I hope we get more stories with the Dresht and their yshain!

LOVED this extension to the Alien Cluth series! I was dying for Asher’s story and this one didn’t disappoint! As always with Dove—it was just the right amount of hot but with characters you really love and plenty of tender care and sweetness mixed in. Fingers crossed there’s more to come in this universe!

A Must Read!

I loved Asher's story and his two mates! I had an inkling of what was going to happen because I read the short that inspired this story, I just wish it had been longer! I want to know how his first Season goes and how he adjusts to traveling the stars with his mates as a cherished one.

A great mix of angst and cuteness! The backstory was intriguing and horrific, and I loved the way the relationship between the characters evolved. As extreme as it was, it felt pretty natural

Thank you so much for the ARC!

Loved this continuation of the Alien Clutch series. Be sure to read the other books first or this one won't make much sense. It's a nice bonus follow-up although I did wish it was longer. This series is so unique and I really love the author's take on "gentle" noncon.
