One of the things I love most about Kathi's books is that even though they're mostly paranormal in nature, the characters are your normal everyday people, insomuch as they're just like us. They laugh, they hurt, they mourn, they cry, they have insecurities, and they love and yearn to be loved in return. We can identify with all of those traits and that makes us feel for her characters. They aren't unbelievably perfect, they struggle like we do.
Nolan and Rylee are two such people. Nolan, though he lost his parents at a young age, has always had the love and support of his aunt and brothers and later accomplished his dream of becoming a Doctor. He's also in the process of creating a shelter to help the homeless, yet he is in way over his head financially, and refused to ask his family for help. When they find out the extent of his situation, they do what families do, which is help. But to Nolan this means they're taking over and he's a disappointment, causing him to lash out and close himself off. See, real life thoughts and doubts.
As Nolan is working at his and Burke's new office, he meets Shane. Shane is a teenager that not only recently lost his Mom, Shelby, to cancer, but is also being bullied at school. He's now being raised by his Aunt Rylee and hasn't told her the full extent of the bullying situation. Rylee is called to the office and informed about everything. Nolan also discovers she's his mate. The attraction is mutual and instant, as it is for mates.
Rylee is struggling in all ways possible...emotionally, financially, mentally, and physically. She misses her sister, feels she is failing Shane, is sometimes working up to three jobs to provide for them, and it's all taken a toll on her health. Once the truth is out, Rylee and Shane are now under the family's protection, have a safe place to stay, adjusting to Nolan's role in their lives, and trying to stop the bullying.
They also need to deal with Shane's biological father, David. He has never been a part of Shane's life, treated Shane's Mom horribly, and is just an awful human being. All of a sudden he needs Shane though. It seems the truth of Shane's parentage has been revealed to Alta, Shane's great-grandmother, and David is being disowned.
So now Nolan and Rylee have another thing to deal with, but at least the bullying issue is resolved. I'm not going to share any details about that resolution, as reading it will make so much more of an impact. I will say, I absolutely love how Kathi handled it. It was brilliant, beautiful, and breathtakingly emotional in my opinion.
Do Nolan, Rylee, and Shane get their HEA as a family? Will David get what's coming to him? Will Nolan learn to accept help and understand his family is proud of him? Will Rylee accept that she's not a failure as a parent and is doing a great job with Shane? There's also two little stories within this story and I loved them. They don't detract the focus off of Nolan and Rylee at all. They enhance the book. Can't wait to read the next one. I highly recommend anything Kathi writes.
