I really loved this book!! It was enjoyable for so many reasons. & i’m not huge on fantasy but this book made me interested in the genre. It was full of great characters and scenes that really stuck with you long after reading. One of my favorite parts was seeing how fleshed out the characters felt and how naturally the relationships developed throughout the story !! they all felt like real friends. Every interaction felt meaningful and added something to the world the author created. I also really enjoyed the shifts in perspective throughout the book. Getting to be inside everyone’s head was such a nice touch because it made the characters feel even more real and layered. It was interesting to see how different characters viewed the same situations and relationships in completely different ways. I especially liked being in on things that the main protagonist wasn’t aware of yet because it added so much tension and excitement to the story. Sorren was such a fun perspective to follow!!, and his character brought so much personality and emotion to the book even though he wasn’t my favorite character i liked seeing other characters through his POV. Overall it was a very fun read and i can’t wait to read the next one! and Casper is the loml im pretty sure.
I love the both the characters and the world shown in this book. It’s an exciting read that the authors really brings to life. I love the world of coneira and can’t wait for the next book. Would recommend!
• t r o u p e s • 👫 found family ⚡️ elemental magic ⚔️ cost of survival 👥 multiple POV 🔥 lots of banter
• m y • t h o u g h t s • Thank you to the author, Finn, for sending me a signed copy of First Light and letting me interview him on my newsletter!! This was such a great reading experience! It's so well-written, so emotional, and all the characters are so fun! I'm very impressed with this book and can't wait for the rest of the series!
✍🏼 p r o s e ✍🏼 This, I think, was one of the strongest aspects of the book. Finn's prose was so thoughtful, and captured raw emotion in a way I've never thought about before. It was incredibly relatable, and each POV captured every character's voice perfectly. While I highly enjoyed the banter between characters, sometimes it felt a little prolonged, making the scene drag without any actual plot progression. Sometimes I also wished there was more description of the characters and setting, but overall, I was very impressed--especially for a debut novel!
⚡️ w o r l d • b u i l d i n g ⚡️ The world of Coniera is so unique! The fact these kids grew up in caves their whole lives without ever seeing the sky or trees, was crazy! There was a lot of thought put into how they could survive in such conditions, and I thought it was very interesting to read. I also loved how each of their powers were based on an element, and I'm very intrigued to read more about the magic system in later books! I feel like there's so much more left to explore, and I can't wait to see what else there is! The only thing that I noticed about the world-building, is that while this is a fantasy, some elements felt more modern in the way it was described. I'm still very interested to read more about Coneira in later books and see the world expand!
🔥p lo t + p a c i n g 🔥 The whole concept of First Light is unique! It's hard to pin down my thoughts about the plot, because I feel like I need the other books to decide how I feel about the story. This book is more of a set-up for something much larger, which makes me excited for what's to come! The pacing is definitely a bit slow--that was really the biggest thing for me. It was kind of hard to get through at times, but the characters kept me going and now I'm so stoked for book 2!!
👫c h a r a c t e r s👫 I loved almost every single character!!! I was so shocked at how each of them had such distinct personalities and ways of speaking. Sorren had me laughing in almost every chapter, and I loved that I could always tell who was talking before I was told! I loved all the different POVs as well. It gave a lot of insight into these characters and what they were each struggling with. I think Skyla, Whirl, and Sandro are definitely my favorites out of all the characters! Sometimes it would feel a little jarring when the POV would switch almost every chapter (and even in the middle of chapters). In my experience, multiple POV books are difficult to pull off with more than three characters, so I think it was done pretty well overall (even though I didn't feel that ALL the POVs were necessary.) Other than that, I thought the characters were probably were the strongest part of the book!
⚠️c o n t e n t First Light is very clean. There are some wound descriptions that might make some people cringe, and it can feel a little heavy because the characters are working through a lot of grief. But overall, I would say this book is good as an upper middle-grade or lower young-adult.
Thank you again so much, Finn, for letting me read your book!! I'm so impressed that this is your debut, and I can't wait for book 2!!
I was an arc reader for this project, i can say with confidence that it is a fun read for any fan of fantasy and good storytelling. The perspective work and characterization was impressive for such a young author.
Sorren is a compelling protagonist and has a well crafted arc throughout the book and leaves plenty of room for future development. Hope their relationship grows into the next book. The rest of the gang is great, Sandro is my favorite. I see a great arc for Skyla in the future (chapter 6 iykyk).
Would recommend as a fan of the Lord of the Ring, Percy Jackson, and the Cosmere.
This book genuinely exceeded my expectations. The storyline and worldbuilding were really well done, and I loved the multiple POVs because they added depth while still keeping the main character clear. The writing also felt very polished, especially for a newer author. Definitely excited for the next book.
This book is so good with amazing characters and a immersive world. the story is action packed and will keep you hooked. it is a perfect book for fantasy lovers and if you loved books like wings of fire this book is perfect for you.
