George MacDonald was a Scottish author, poet and Christian Congregational minister. He became a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow-writer Lewis Carroll. In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works of Christian theology, including several collections of sermons.
If you enjoy exploring different genres and themes within a single book, "Rampolli" could be the read for you. It’s an interesting collection of translated (from German sources) poems and introspective reflections, the author’s own “Diary of An Old Soul”.
I enjoyed his translations of Goethe and Novalis, and some of Milton. The gem, however, is his own Diary of an Old Soul. I found so many of his spiritual thoughts, questions, and doubts (which are at the very least half faiths on the way to something better) to meet my own young heart in the only possible comforting way: that of a fellow traveler along the road, having traveled so much longer than I, and with wisdom and comfort from regions beyond.
