I have to be honest, this one just didn’t do it for me.
Let me start with what I actually liked, because there were a few things that stood out. Nadia, the sister, was hands down one of the most interesting characters for me. She just felt real and brought some much needed life to the story. And Patrick’s mother? She had that sharp, commanding energy that reminded me so much of Emily Gilmore, and I loved it. Every time she was on the page, I found myself paying more attention.
But honestly, outside of those two, I found myself struggling to get through the rest of the book.
The setup had so much potential. We have the guarded CEO whose world gets turned upside down by a woman who doesn’t play by the rules. Throw in the fact that he’s a single dad and his kid starts to connect with her, and you’d think there would be a lot of room for real, deep feelings. But for me, it just didn’t deliver on what it promised.
Elena was supposed to be this chaotic, unpredictable force, but honestly, it just felt messy. Instead of making her interesting or adding tension, it made it hard for me to connect with her or even believe she belonged in that kind of professional world. Which, let's be clear, she was not. It just didn’t feel real, and it took me out of the story.
The romance didn’t really pull me in, either. Sure, there were late nights and moments where they leaned on each other, but it all felt a bit rushed and forced. I just didn’t feel that deep connection the story wanted me to believe in. It was more like I was being told they were in love, instead of actually seeing it happen.
Even the family drama and all the big conflicts didn’t really add much for me. I could see where things were headed almost right away, and nothing really surprised me or made me feel more invested.
So, even though the book had all the right pieces for a good romance, family, healing and growth, it just didn’t come together for me in a way that felt real or meaningful.
If it weren’t for Nadia and Patrick’s mom bringing some spark, I probably wouldn’t have finished this one. As it is, I’d have to pass.

From the very first chapter, the tension between Patrick and Elena hooks you in, and it only gets better as their story unfolds. Patrick might still because this woman ,this ray of sunshine is the opposite of him, no compromise,but at the same time though unsure from where it’s coming he finds her charming and becoming.

Erm she’s delivering flowers,a job she’s got already but this guy is rock steady ,is a false statement because he’s faltering and when there’s noise abatement like a ringing phone. She’s faltering with discourse too. So what do these two polar opposites do?

Elena is somewhat of an oxymoron - disorganized as heck on the outside but trying desperately to maintain control on the inside. She delivers flowers to Patrick's company and he hires her on the spot because his assistant quit. She can't work the phone system, she messes up his calendar terribly, but she mesmerizes his oldest client. She's genuine and full of life.
Both Elena and Patrick are dealing with losses. Elena was orphaned at 8 and her sister Nadia has been taking care of her. Patrick lost his wife Sarah 3 years ago and is left taking care of his son Erick. Both of them carry the guilt of their losses with them.
Patrick is drawn to Elena almost from the first day. They both of them fight the attraction, but it quickly becomes highly inappropriate for the office environment.
They are both such genuinely likeable people. Elena makes Patrick laugh - something he realizes was missing in his marriage.
The first night Elena spends at his apartment involved a blind fold and trust.

So she ends up answering them for a company that she knew nothing about. When she has someone demand to talk to Patrick she has to go on a search to find his office, as a result she gets hired on the spot even though she has no prior experience.
Patrick is still grieving for his wife whom he lost 3yrs ago and was left to raise his son, as a result he has built walls so him and his son don't get hurt. Elena was put in the Foster Care system so the only way she can cope with new people is that she has to plan everything.
With the help of Erick can they help each other to get over what they have been holding on to for far too long.

Grief, rejection, and the fear of never being chosen, never really having a family to call home. This beautifully written story packs an emotional punch. Beyond the scope of the trope, you are drawn into the relatable vulnerabilities and the self discovery of two very damaged souls. They come together at just the right place and at just the right time. They are complicated, messy, passionate, and willing to put it all on the line to find what they have always wanted…to belong.
Tough topics are written with grace and respect. I ugly cried, laughed out loud, and came out better for having had this experience. Such a talent!.

Elena and Patrick are such opposites. She is open, fun and maybe a little bit down the middle as him. Patrick’s heart has a wall around it, since the death of wife.

Another swoony billionaire from Carlyle. I love reading her stories. You get heart. You get emotion. You get spice. And the stories flow. There is never a dull moment.
Elana and Patrick have that instant connection a lot of us crave. They explode early on. Then they try to figure things out. I love me a good.single dad romance.

What a mess! Elena delivers flowers for her sister and leaves the office with a job. Patrick doesn’t know how to handle her and chaos. Not having a clue how to do the job she’s hired for, she fakes it until she makes it….. or gets fired. This book was a lot of fun to read. There is a part that I do want to warn readers about. If you don’t like the pronouns them/they…. It is used when speaking about someone in the book.

This is my first time reading this author but it won’t be the last. There are so many layers in this story. Both main characters have deep scars and for very good reasons. Both have created walls for that exact reason. But sometimes fate and life have a funny way of breaking those down. The roller coaster ride of Patrick and Elena will have you turning the pages to see if they can both overcome those scars and walls and end up together.

I have read the rest of the series from Joy, and this was had a slower pace than the others. It wasn't bad, just different. The characters were well developed, and the storyline was complete and enjoyable. Joy's writing style is consistent between all the books and is very cohesive. I enjoyed that. It's a solid read.

Joy certainly has a way of capturing your attention. From the very first page, I simply couldn’t put it down, stayed up late and woke up early just to read more. She has a real knack for writing strong, compelling characters. I could not get enough of the push and pull between them. The spice was a great bonus, too! A definite must read!

Patrick and Elena ‘s story pulls you in with their tension. They both have similar goals and the chemistry is sizzling. This is an opposites attract story with drama, suspense and chemistry infused.

I loved this storyline. I wish I could find a job just by walking in. I felt bad for the boss man at first but he's gotta lose people from his attitude right? It's a good thing she has a loving sister to have her back. You will love the slow burn of this story

This story had me crying. Another great read by Joy Carlyle. Elena and Patrick are such complex characters and it only seems appropriate that they end up together. Their journey break my heart. This story was a rollercoaster ride that I did not want to get off from. I definitely recommend!

Truly a great read
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are great, you see so much growth in them and their relationship. You see people who choose to do more but not in an overwhelming way.

There was nothing ‘wrong’ with this book, I just couldn’t get past the author’s writing style, neurodivergent perhaps? The characters seemed almost robotic, pedantic. I couldn't really become invested in the characters or care about the outcome.

Love does not go quietly into the night
It takes a lot to get where you’re supposed to be after a loss of either a spouse or a lover. Working through the grief process is hard and takes a lot of mental effort. But it can also be well worth it.
