Jane’s Secret begins with our modern-day FMC, Kaitlyn, discovering a letter from her ancestors providing clues to what a mysterious golden key, which has been passed down for generations, means. Then, we are introduced to Jane, born hundreds of years before, who discovers the key her father hid, and seeks to find what it belongs to as well.
Let me preface this review by saying, based off what other reviewers have said, maybe I wasn’t the best audience for this novel. I haven’t read many split-time novels, and contemporary is not a favorite of mine, so maybe that was part of it.
But I also want to begin with what I did love about this novel. First, the cover. It’s absolutely gorgeous and is what drew me in (along with the synopsis–I love a good historical mystery!). The mystery was also pretty engaging, especially during the first half. By the second half, I was getting drained by other aspects of the story which I’ll mention below, but I was still curious about seeing the mystery solved!
The first third of the book, focusing on Jane’s POV, was also pretty good and that was the part I was most invested in. I really liked Humphrey, not going to lie. I honestly thought I would see (and would have enjoyed seeing) more of Jane’s POV in the novel. Finally, the theme of the story–the power of prayer and generational blessings–was super sweet, and unique! I’ve never read another Christian book focusing on that theme, so that was a nice bit there.
Now. I’m going to list my frustrations with this novel in no particular order.
The details in this novel follow both extremes. At times, I got an info-dump of unnecessary information, which bogged down the story. Other times, certain scenes seemed to be missing detail, leaving me bewildered and confused, even after returning and rereading the scenes multiple times. This especially seemed prominent in areas concerning setting–for example, we’re looking at a stone wall, then, all the sudden, we’re pushing open a door. It got to the point where I had no clue where the characters were or what was going on.
Then, the romance. Usually, romance is an issue point with me with books in general, so maybe this shouldn’t be surprising. And this may just be me. But I will say, this dislike of the romance was different from my normal dislike, as usually my dislike is pretty passionate. Here, it’s just… apathy. I really didn’t care about Kaitlyn and James’s romance. Like, at all. It was just there. No feelings whatsoever. Also, they moved in together before being married? Even if they were determined to “stay chaste”… why can’t she just get her own apartment nearby? It’s just very unrealistic for nothing to happen in such close quarters with absolutely no accountability, and in my opinion, a bad message for young people who think they’re strong enough to handle the temptation.
I WAS enjoying Jane and Humphrey’s growing romance–I was a bit concerned at the beginning because Jane crushed on some other guy, but it seemed like Jane and Humphrey were going to grow to love each other, and expected to see this. Except… we didn’t. The next time we see Jane, is thirty years later, at Humphrey’s funeral. She describes her life with him as “tolerable”–he was a kind, God-fearing man who adored her. But she just “tolerated” him because of her crush on this other guy (who she promptly marries almost immediately after poor Humphrey’s buried?) Humphrey deserved better, just saying. Also, isn’t what Jane did technically adultery according to Jesus in Matthew 5:28, still crushing on another man while being married? (Last couple of Christian books I’ve read have had this element–what is the allure, here? I don’t get it.)
Moving on. The writing style–it just wasn’t for me. It felt like the author was trying to show, but instead was telling everything. Telling me how to feel. For example, (and this is my own example, not a bit in the book) this is how the writing style felt to me: Betty walked down the street. The breeze hit her face and she smiled. A man grabbed her arm. He shoved her to the side of the wall. Betty cried in pain.
The plausibility of several of the events also made me pause. The characters are in Britain, presumably, and two of the handful of characters in the modern day setting have guns. The UK is not America–it’s very rare and hard to get firearms there unless you’re a police officer. Yet the characters act like it’s pretty easy to have and own guns. Also, the main characters meet and become friends with the prince and princess (I have no clue who the prince or princess are, as we’re never told their names. They’re just called “the princess” and “the prince” the entire time, which is a lot).
In the past, there’s also mention of someone reading their Bible. The time period listed in 1514–the break from the Catholic Church had not yet happened in England yet, and not many Bibles were printed, much less in English, that an apparently poorer nobleman could afford. Not to mention it was illegal to own one. The mention of the Book of Hours was much more historically appropriate, so perhaps that’s what was meant by reading the Bible, but still, it didn’t seem that way, in light of the mentions of the Book of Hours elsewhere.
I really wanted to enjoy this book. I think for a bit there, I was, as at least Jane’s parts seemed a little less telly than the rest of the novel. But her parts only took up about a third of the book, and afterwards, it just went downhill. Thus, I can’t personally recommend this novel, however, if clean split-time novels with good, Christian messages are your thing, I’d recommend reading other reviews and seeing if you should try it based off them. It could just be I wasn’t the intended audience for this novel and style.

4.5 Stars rounded up. I loved this story by a new to me author. Split time is one of my favorite genres and this one was fabulous! The mystery elements were right up my history loving alley and the fact that most of the story took place in England was icing on the cake for me. I read probably 75% of the story in one day because I could not put it down. And while I enjoy a good romance, I also enjoyed that in this story the romance takes a backseat to the mystery and the spiritual elements. One of my favorite things about the story was how the author touched on blessings of families for generation after generation, I really loved how that played into the story line. Overall, this was a great read for me and I hope we see more from this Author!

I really have to say that this was a very fascinating and powerful story! In the past year I have grown to love reading dual timeline stories and this one really it the spot. What I loved about this book is that it really taught the importance of having faith. For example in the sixteenth century we have Jane who had a very loving life with her parents until her father died. Her stepfather ended up being a disagreeable creature who didn't want her around. However, when she went to a different household and met her future husband everything seemed to change for the better. Fast forward to our modern storyline where we are introduced to Kaitlyn who finds a key in her modern American home. She decides to go back to the land of her ancestors. However, there are so many issues along the way. But in the long run the trip ended up being worth it. I think many readers will enjoy the inspirational message this novel will give. I received a complimentary copy all opinions are of my own.

Jane’s Secret combines faith, family history, and a mystery that spans generations. I was especially intrigued by the connection between the historical and contemporary storylines and the search to uncover the meaning behind a mysterious key.
I appreciated the clean content, Christian themes, and focus on family legacy. Personally, I found myself most drawn to the historical elements and would have loved to spend more time in that timeline. While the story wasn’t quite the fit I had hoped for, readers who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction with a family-history mystery at its heart may enjoy this journey of faith, heritage, and discovery.

This is a captivating split-time novel where buried secrets, love, and legacy collide across generations. The faith elements are woven deep in this one, which touches me. I loved the mystery of Kaitlyn's family secret. I was fully invested waiting, trying to figure out the mystery/family secret myself. The duel timeline was written beautifully, sometimes I have hard time getting into or possibly being confused during split timelines and I had no issues with this one.

in the present day, amidst piles of family photographs and memories, kaitlyn’s found a letter that seems like it might help solve the mystery of the key that has passed from generation to generation. meanwhile, in the early 1500s, jane’s also searching for a mysterious key’s purpose—while dealing with strained family relationships and looming arranged nuptials (while being a little in love with a different man)…
it’s a story with quite a few complications, for sure. from here, it could go in some different directions, and i’m looking forward to following along the story unfolds. (i have to find out what the secret of this key is, too, of course.)

This book completely won me over. The writing is just stunning — lyrical and poetic in a way that made me want to reread certain passages just to enjoy the beauty of the language all over again. You can tell the author has a real gift with words.
This book handled the jump between two time periods effortlessly. Both timelines kept me equally hooked, which honestly surprised me.
The thing that really got me was how genuinely the deeper themes came through. The faith elements felt heartfelt and organic rather than forced — they actually moved me. And on top of that, the mystery had enough twists to keep me completely glued to the pages.
If beautiful prose, rich atmosphere, and a story with genuine meaning sound like your thing, don't sleep on this one. It's easily one of the best books I've read in a long time.

I love time split novels and enjoyed that this one was partially set in the 1500’s, a time period I don’t read a lot about.
I liked the historical aspect of this story and the sense of mystery as Jane seeks to figure out what the key goes to. While I loved the historical aspect, I felt a little lost at times with the story jumping around in scenes. I also did not care for the romance. I felt bad for Humphrey’s and how Jane treats her relationship with him. I also don’t get the modern couple moving in together as a Christian couple. I think that it sends the wrong message and throws open the door to temptation. Not something I would want my teen to read.
That said, if you like time split novels, this is an interesting one to pick up.

I absolutely loved this book! Did not want to put it down. What an adventure. The story was fantastic and carried a great message too. Love how the Lord will lead you to just the right book at the right time. This spoke deeply to my heart. Reminding me of the importance of prayer for the generations.

2026 is my year of reading Jane Austen, and in some ways, Jane’s Secret by Jennifer E. Tirrell reminds me of Northanger Abbey. Both take place in England, both include a young female heroine living with a benefactor apart from her family, and each includes a large gothic house with forbidden rooms and ominous vibes.
But Jane’s Secret is epic in scope, told in two timelines (16th century and present day) featuring women in the same family separated by several generations but united by a unique and mysterious key. With intrigue, action, faith, and romance, Jane’s Secret transported me to England without boarding a plane.
In dual timeline novels, I often prefer one storyline over the other, and I appreciated Jane's story (past) more than Kaitlyn's (present). While the current-day plot contains lots of action which kept it moving forward, the pacing was uneven and surprisingly violent. And the romance was insta-love which is not a trope that's believable to me.
I suspect this novel was inspired by the author’s family history as her last name is the same as the contemporary character. I hoped for an explanation in an author’s note, but there was no information in the copy I read.

Throughout the story, Jane is trying to find her father’s will, and all she has is the key. We switch between the 16th century and modern times, where we follow Kaitlyn around as she is trying to uncover the mystery of the family heirloom, the key, which has been passed down from generation to generation. When she uncovers a letter in the attic, she is off to England with only a few clues to unearth the truth. First place she starts is at the jewelry shop that may have made the key, where she meets James. James steps in to help, especially after it seems someone is following Kaitlyn and after the key. “Jane’s Secret” is a page turning historical fiction with a little bit of mystery and romance. I was captivated from the very beginning and was intrigued until the end. I enjoyed the history the author weaved into the story and while it was a short part of the story, I think it could make for another spin off from some perspective. I also appreciated all the faith woven into the story. I tried my best to use my imagination with the religion and church/ tapestries of Our Lord. I think it would be so neat to visit something like that. Overall, this was really interesting and I quite enjoyed this book. I would recommend it for any historical Christian fiction lovers or anyone that loves a good clean read.

Not the dusty kind of history that stays politely behind glass, but history with a pulse. The kind that makes the present feel less detached from the past. The kind that asks whether faithfulness in one generation can still be felt by another.
In Jane’s world, the cost of doing right is not theoretical. She has already known loss. She has been shaped by Scripture, by godly counsel, by reverence for the Lord, and by the quiet courage of obedience when her heart is not the only thing being asked to choose.
In Kaitlyn’s world, the mystery begins with a key and pulls her across an ocean into questions she cannot neatly leave alone. The search is intriguing, yes, but what held me most was not simply what had been hidden.

I do love a good dual-timeline novel, and Jennifer E. Tirrell's debut is just that!
In sixteenth-century England, Jane Ingleton grew up with loving parents. But when her father died, her mother remarried, and her stepfather was a mean-spirited, abusive man. Jane's mother sent her to live with a family friend to protect her. But before she left her home, Jane found a key secreted in a painting of her father. The key was the start of a mystery that stretched across centuries.
In the present day, Kaitlyn Tirrell, a distant relative of Jane, finds the key and its promise of a generational blessing. She travels to England, hoping to track down the answer to the puzzle. She doesn't count on someone else seeking the same answer, someone who is seemingly determined to knock Kaitlyn out of her quest by any means necessary.
Tirrell's prose is lovely. She writes in such a way that it's easy to keep reading. She also gives us two strong, likable women in Jane and Kaitlyn. Jane is a product of her time and isn't one to kick against the system in which she finds herself, but she doesn't lack spirit. A marriage of convenience isn't what her heart wants, but she knows it's best, and she finds some measure of contentment there. Kaitlyn is curious and determined, persistent in her efforts to unravel the clues as to what her family's mysterious blessing is.
The search for the answers lead Kaitlyn to a jewelry store in England, and the romance between her and James, the store's owner, pops up pretty quickly. It seems almost like insta-romance, and that really isn't my favorite trope. But their relationship is so sweet and earnest as it unfolds, I couldn't help but want to see things work out for them!
The search also leads Kaitlyn into unexpected danger, and there are some tense moments as she and James try to evade pursuit. I have some thoughts on the villain and how he found Kaitlyn, but I'm not going to share them because I don't want to spoil anything. How this played out, though, bothered me enough that it made this a four-star read instead of five. But this same arc, the villain and the pursuit, also led Kaitlyn to an unexpected friendship that I just loved, so I gave that star back!
The romance is sweet, the faith is genuine, the mystery brings the tension, the viewpoints from different times are both engaging. This didn't really read like a debut novel, and I can't wait to see what Jennifer Tirrell comes up with next!

What an engaging split-time tale! Jane’s Secret, the debut novel of Jennifer E. Tirrell, is an inspiring read that is part historical fiction and part contemporary novel with faith, mystery, and romance woven throughout. What makes the story even more interesting is that it is partly inspired by the author’s own history.
The novel, which is centered primarily around the mystery of an heirloom key, tells the tale of two women, bound by blood (despite the five hundred years that separate them), who both desire to uncover the secret it secures. The two storylines are not only fascinating, but they are also woven together so beautifully. Together, they tell an uplifting tale that highlights that importance of faith, legacy, and family.
Readers will be left pondering two questions: What influences are speaking into their lives? What sort of legacy are they leaving?
While there are many, many notable quotes worth remembering, the following are a few of my favorites:
“Cry your tears now, if you must, Jane. But when they stop. . .and they will stop—talk to Jesus in the same way you would talk to your best friend. . . .Give your troubles to Jesus.”

I love history. It calls to me. I’m always having to learn more, to know more, to understand more. The medieval era isn’t one I’ve spent a lot of time studying, but it is one that holds interest for me. So, of course, with this book having history and being Medieval, I knew I had to give it a go.
It did not disappoint!
On another note, I felt drawn to this author when I read her bio. My husband and I have adopted four children who were “kin”. My grandmother and all her ancestors on her mother’s side are from England. Recently, I was able to go there and see where they’re buried and visit their little chapel. It is truly a humbling and also magical experience to be able to sit, stand and walk where you know they were once.
Now for the book.
I loved the split timeline. We have Jane back in the 16th century. She knows what is expected of her, and she’s resigned and ready for it. But then her life changes! Everything is upended. She gets sent away with a mysterious key. While looking for the meaning of the key and what it opens, she finds faith and God.
But then we jump to the present, and another young girl searching for answers finds the key. Are they connected? What is the key? Does it open something? Or is the significance bigger?

This is probably one of the best dual time stories I have read. It has deep faith elements and the characters are so easy to like. I appreciate the author’s research to make this story more authentic to the time period. It was easy to keep reading until I finished the book. The author captures a young woman named Jane who endured cruel treatment from her step father. Jane knows this man is not happy with bring around. I wanted Jane to escape from him as soon as she could. Her curiously gets the best of her when she tries to undercover a mystery.
As we move forward in time we are introduced to Kaitlyn who has a necklace with a key that she wears around her neck. She decides to go overseas to see if she can uncover the mysterious necklace and key. She longs to find out information about her ancestors and I admired her strength while traveling overseas alone. After a tragic accident at a jewelry store the young man who works there decides to help Kaitlyn find out who is trying to harm her.
My heart is filled with such compassion as I finished the book. The author brings us a story that gives readers a look at the importance of handing down the family’s faith from generation to generation. I loved how the two women never wavered from their belief and also allowed God to order their steps. There is a mystery and a bit of danger in the story which adds a depth of intrigue.

I enjoy reading split-time novels, which I find shout mystery and adventure, and this story does not disappoint. This story centers around a mysterious key handed down from generation to generation. It all goes back to the Tudor time period of 1514 in Buckinghamshire, England. Lady Jane is a teenager who lives with her mother and malevolent step-father. One day, Jane notices something different about one of her family’s belongings. Jane’s prayerful father was quite imaginative and constructed many interesting things inside his home. Without giving too much information, this is where Jane finds ‘the key.’ From here, she, along with future family generations will wonder what this key holds.
Jane and Kaitlyn, although decades apart and decent young ladies, deal with this mystery. The question is, will Kaitlyn be the one who solves the mystery before something dreadful happens to her? I recommend this well-written story over a good cup of plain coffee. I received this e-book for free from Celebrate Lit Tour and the opinions I express are my own.

Dual Timeline Novels are a genre that I have really gained interest in over the last couple of years. Jane's Secret by Jennifer E. Tirrell is the latest book in this genre that I have read.
WOW, this storyline was very intriguing from the very beginning. I began reading the story and could not put it down. The main characters are Jane Ingleton, from the 16th Century and Kaitlyn Tirrell, from the Present Day. Jane is a young woman living in England in the 16th Century. She is keeping a secret and wants it to be hidden forever. Jane has endured so much in her young life and family is part of the secret and a mystery key is found and she is curious to what the key is for. Kaitlyn finds a letter in the family attic that leads her back in time to Family Secrets and Mystery. Kaitlyn decides to go back to the "scene of the mystery" and travels to England to figure out more about the letter and mystery Key. I really saw so many similarities in Jane and Kaitlyn, especially how strong their faith is. Faith that helps them endure the struggles of life, the power of prayer that they both experience and the Faith and Scripture that they both believe. I also love that they are both determined to discover the Family Truths, even though someone was trying to deter them from getting to the truth. The Historical parts of the book made me feel like I was there in that time period. The book is about Faith, Family, Romance and bonds across the generations. GREAT BOOK!

This is a dual time-line story that spans 500 years. Present day Kaitlyn who lives in the United States and her ancestor, Jane who lived in England. At the center of this mystery is a key and what it unlocks many in both timelines and throughout the years have been searching for its secrets.
There is danger to both women. Even to Kaitlyn who is hundreds of years removed from Jane and her time. But what the mystery of this key unlocks is just too great for any generations to give up on.
I did enjoy going back in time to the manor house of Jane. I really felt for her and the loss of her beloved father, the secrets she was trying to unravel, and the absolute cruel stepfather she had now. Her story was harrowing and her life's journey was interesting to watch unfold.

There is danger to both women. Even to Kaitlyn who is hundreds of years removed from Jane and her time. But what the mystery of this key unlocks is just too great for any generations to give up on.
I did enjoy going back in time to the manor house of Jane. I really felt for her and the loss of her beloved father, the secrets she was trying to unravel, and the absolute cruel stepfather she had now. Her story was harrowing and her life's journey was interesting to watch unfold.

𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 is a lovely blend of history, mystery, family secrets, and faith. It moves between 16th-century London and modern-day America, and the dual timelines were equally good! I love dual-time stories, and this one handled the shifts between the two stories very nicely.
This is a new-to-me author, and I’m so glad I found her work. The writing is beautiful and the story kept me turning pages. I enjoyed the romance, the sense of family legacy, and how easy it was to move through both time periods. I appreciated how the mystery unfolded and especially loved the strong thread of faith tied throughout. Be sure to read the Book Club Discussion Questions at the back of the book—they’re very thought-provoking.
I enjoyed this well-written novel and would recommend it to readers who enjoy meaningful Christian fiction.

Jane's Secret by Jennifer Tirell is a book full of intrigue. This book takes the reader on a journey between two time periods. The genre I read the most is fantasy, but I do enjoy split-time or as they are called sometimes, dual time books. This book was mainly focused in London, England in the past and present, but there was a bit in the United States as well. Some of the themes that readers will see in this book are history, prayer and enduring faith. The length of this book is just right, it is not too long, dragging out what does not need to be dragged out and not too short leaving the reader wondering if there could be more.
In the present-day Kaitlynn has a steady job, but she is not quite content with it. Then there is the mystery of the key that hangs around her neck. This key has been passed won from generation to generation and is said to grant blessings to the one who finds where it fits and what is hiding there.
Jane is a young girl in the 18oo’s who is like any other girl, curious and adventurous. Unfortunate events see her mother remarried to her stepfather, who is not a nice man in the least bit. He would take over the manor that Jane lives in and take it for himself and his family. Jane is sent off by her mother, because of her stepfather’s malicious acts toward her and her mother’s fears that it will get worse. Jane comes up with a plan to bless future generations of her family. That is where Kaitlynn comes in and her search for where the key belongs and what treasure (s) awaits the one who finds it.
This book was so good and as I stated above, it is not that long, but long enough, so I did not stop reading until I got it done, most people I believe will feel the same way. I think the treasure or blessing that is for all generations after Jane is more precious than expected. Pick this book up and I think you will be transported like I was into the story of these two women and their history and faith that brings them together.

Jane’s Secret by author Jennifer E. Tirrell is a split time Christian novel. The two stories are medieval (16th century) and contemporary time. There are mysteries, faith, history, hardship, love, and family legacy.
I was immediately invested in both era stories. They meshed well and had me guessing. The Christian theme throughout the book was just beautiful. Faith was front and center along with Jesus. In fact, the steps to salvation are listed in the beginning of the novel. Very few books do this, and I was impressed.
The writing is done exceptionally well. There are twists and turns that provided surprises. All of the characters were believable and realistic.
There are discussion questions at the end of the book. Book clubs will benefit from choosing this as a selection. There is so much to talk about.

My favorite type of novels are one with a split time line. When I found out about Jennifer E Tirrell's Jane's Secret, I instantly jumped at the chance to read it. I was not disappointed. I loved toggling back and forth from present day to the medieval times and seeing how the span of time entwines with one another. I thought it was a fantastic read that was full of intrigue, secrets, and faith. I loved it.
Jane's Secret gets a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical fiction, as well as, split time novels. I would love to dive into more releases from Jennifer E Tirrell in the future.

A dual time novel, this intriguing story ties a young woman from the Tudor time to a present-day descendent in America. Kaitlyn Tirrell follows ancient clues to try to discover what the family key handed down since medieval times will unlock. Little did she know travelling to England to try to find out would lead to danger and to love. The events from the two time periods tie together well and make the reader curious to learn what will happen and to uncover the hidden secrets. The lifelike characters come across as strong and true as do their interactions. The plot moves along steadily and captures the reader’s attention. I enjoyed the suspense and the emphasis on faith and following God. It’s cool that the author based this on her own family history and used that as inspiration for this fun adventure. I thought this was an interesting story. It took me a minute to get into it because of the split timelines but once I was able to sort everything out, I thought it was a good story. I liked the mystery and family history aspect of the story. I liked how Kaitlyn was able to solve the mystery that her family had been trying to solve for hundreds of years. I also liked how the treasure was more then just a physical treasure but more the faith that the previous generations passed down.

I found this to be a fascinating split time novel with a strong faith element. This is a new author to me and I really enjoyed how she wove a present day story and 1514 storyline together seamlessly to present a complete and compelling narrative that held my attention from beginning to end. I loved the element of the key and the mysterious search for what it was supposed to open. The characters are very well written and the storyline flowed onto the pages like an epic poem. I found the originality of the story captivating. I look forward to reading more by this author.
