Fate of the Sovereign #1

Rise of the Adepts

Rate this book
** ALTERNATE COVER EDITION **

Edyn - A world ravaged by war, cursed by Gates through which gods and demons still walk the earth...

A plume of power erupts, pointing to an ancient Gate between our world and the Aeris, creatures born from myths and legends, hungering for worship, and offering only possession and slavery in return.

An order of monks known as Adepts sense the Gate, but are not alone. Elder races have taken note and converge on the Gate’s next appearance, a desert stronghold known as Bara’cor. Lacking much of the ancient lore and might, the Adepts still send one of their very best to investigate: Silbane.

Silbane Petracles – lethal assassin, Master of the Way, honed as a living weapon. His mission: stop the Gate from opening, no matter the cost. His best chance: use his apprentice’s ability to disrupt magic, possibly killing him in the process.

But others have a stake in the outcome…

Themun Dreys – Lore Father and leader of the Adepts, powerful in the Way. For two centuries he has been saving those born with Talent. Now he faces a danger beyond his Council’s abilities and has limited options for a path to salvation.

Lady Lilyth – Lady of Flame, Eye of the Sun, and Aeris Celestial, a goddess who no longer wishes to serve the beliefs and whims of the people of this world. Ravager, destroyer, warforged, she believes Silbane’s apprentice holds the secret to life for her kind and will do anything to get it.

Rai’stahn – Dragon-knight of the Conclave, ancient guardian of power. He believes Silbane’s apprentice does more than disrupt magic; he eradicates it and forces the world around him to become mundane. He will take any steps necessary to ensure magic and those beings sustained by it, survive.

Kisan Talaris – Master of the Way, fellow warrior and friend to Silbane. Decisive and powerful, she tracks unknown assassins sent against her Order, but is then given a new directive – kill Silbane’s apprentice and complete his mission, by any means necessary.

Destinies converge as the mighty strive to balance the fate of their worlds against the life of one boy. He is Arek Winterthorn , apprentice to Silbane, assassin-in-training, student of the Way.

And he is – Mythborn.

V. (VJ) Lakshman grew up in Bangkok, Thailand, where he first discovered his love of the martial arts, mythological heroes, and exotic lands, all of which influenced the development of characters and the world in his debut fantasy series, Mythborn – Fate of the Sovereign.

When he was nine, his father took him to a martial arts exhibition, and his life was changed forever. He spent the next forty years mastering the arts of hand-to-hand, grappling, and weapons combat. His dedication to the martial arts and thousands of combat hours fighting opponents across three continents helped shape the authenticity of the martial philosophy and realistic fighting found throughout the Mythborn series.

As a young man, VJ also became fascinated with popular role-playing games such as, Dungeons & DragonsTM, RuneQuestTM, TravellerTM, and ChampionsTM. Much of his high school and college time was spent playing games with friends and dreaming up new worlds within which to adventure. His mind was filled with forgotten worlds, mythical creatures, and dreaming of ages where adventure awaited those daring enough to try.

In 1982, VJ joined Bethesda Softworks as an Executive Producer and Lead Designer, with a vision to create a new and exciting digital role-playing game system. This resulted in the creation of, The Elder Scrolls franchise, re-envisioning the fantasy role playing genre and redefining its reach and popularity. The Elder Scrolls and its subsequent iterations like Skyrim, quickly became and remains the world’s definitive role-playing games, enjoyed by hundreds of millions of fans.

Over the next few decades VJ pursued his interest in video game design and is responsible for over eighty-five well known digital entertainment properties, which have garnered over $1B in lifetime sales.

These rich and immersive life experiences led to his conception and authorship of a rich and exciting new fantasy series known as Mythborn, a world where dreams become reality. While completing the Mythborn saga, VJ is working diligently on the design for an ground-breaking new interactive video game, a television pilot, and a graphic novel, all to complement the world of Mythborn and the characters within.

His educational experience includes graduation from George Washington University and from the Harvard Business School’s elite General Manager Program. His martial arts experience includes extensive training in karate, close combat grappling, kendo, a type of traditional Japanese swordsmanship.

When VJ is not writing, training, or creating video games, he enjoys traveling, researching interesting facts on the internet, long-distance cycling, and taking various things in the house apart. Putting everything back together is the job of a future, better, version of himself – hopefully one who knows how to read the instruction.

Hmmm there seems to be a suspicious amount of generic 5 star reviews posted all in December 19th and 20th . I wonder how all these people decided to finish and love the same book all at the same day? 🤔
So I picked this up because the narrator of the audiobook is really good and basically known for reading the best epic fantasies out there, and also to offer an honest review about this book.
Tbh it's not a bad book, it doesn't offer anything unusual, it's actually like your classic fantasies with dwarves and dragons if that's your thing you might enjoy it, unfortunately, I'm not much into that.
I was gonna give this 3 stars but I couldn't, partially bc I didn't like it enough to do so but also mostly to compensate for those 5 stars that I doubt were honest if real people at all 😂

KIRKUS REVIEW!

Debut fantasy novelist Lakshman offers a rousing epic in which supernatural beings threaten the world of their own creators.

Did gods and demons always exist, or did their believers bring them into being? That question springboards this Tolkien-esque tale, which includes plenty of fresh twists. In a threatened world called Edyn, archmages and adepts, including the powerful Silbane Petracles, train in a life-sustaining discipline called the Way. Azrael and Lilyth, an angel and a demon who lead the power-hungry Aeris, gear up to fight them in a looming conflict that will determine the fate of the world. At the center of it all is a student of the Way, Arek Winterthorn—a seemingly innocent young man of unknown, perhaps catastrophic, origin. The text is deftly written, ... Lakshman shows a plate spinner’s skill as he smoothly balances the novel’s diverse elements and keeps the action rolling at a fast clip. The author shapes his ambitious, entertaining story with a lengthy menu of familiar genre elements—good and bad mages, anti-magic fanatics, dragons, dwarves and elves. He also includes bloody combat, a sentient sword, feisty princes and princesses, noble kings and warriors, and gates to other planes of existence—and even mixes in concepts from world religions and ancient mythologies. (The author’s descriptions of physical combat, training and strategy have an authenticity that’s reminiscent of Elizabeth Moon’s 1992 masterwork The Deed of Paksenarrion.) The story’s resolution remains to be seen, however, in a planned second volume.
An ambitious, colorful and highly readable fantasy epic.

I just happened across this book in browsing on amazon searching for books to fill the time between finishing sandersons "words of radiance" and waiting for ryans"tower lord". Luck smiled on me because this is a truly great novel--now i find myself once again hoping the follow up "bane" (book 2 in series) comes out soon. Sigh--reading multi book epic series is a special kind of torture, akin to riding in the backseat as a child knowing we are driving to an amusement park but thinking time is playing a cruel joke and that we may never get there.

The book is excellent, with good pacing, solid solid characters who each follow their hearts and act only on what they know at the time. Very "real" characters. I loved the quotes from various sources as the beginning to each chapter... Even printed a few out and have them on my bulletin board at work as motivational type pieces. Much of the book involves a clearly deep understanding of unarmed combat which shows in excellently "visual" depictions of fights--this is hugely difficult to do well... Don't believe me? Try it--write out a description of a fistfight/UFC style fight and see how it turns out! Not so easy... See?

Bottom line for every book and review is this--would you recommend others purchase and read this book... Yes! I highly recommend it, do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in this world!

Perhaps we all can train our bodies and minds and, a lucky few of us can gain the status to test for adept... How far will you push yourself to win... All the way? Really? Is your will that strong? .... Better be sure....

I love reading tolkein, heinlein, sun tzu, rommel, and also practicing martial arts... Mythborn delivers on all fronts!!! The story seems to me to be a instant epic in the making - as the author weaves a compelling tapestry of fantasy, sci-fi, military science, martial arts, and a double dose of adventure and mystery. Thank you!

Mythborn sucked me in right away with its intriguing fantasy setting and immediate martial arts action. Within two chapters the martial arts excitement and fantasy intrigue were matched by the hint of sci-fi and mystery that had me pouring over this book as quickly as I could. I am dying to read what happens next!

As a martial artist, and military history fan, I really liked the novel approach of guiding the reader through the action with interesting, relevant, and memorable quotes from military and martial arts disciplines. As tightly as this story was woven, I was surprised to find that this is the first major work written by the author, but I was not at all surprised when I read Mr Lakshman's bio and saw that he was an accomplished martial artist - it showed, and in a very good and reinforcing way for the storyline.

If the author is reading these... please keep painting the picture of edyn and finish the next book, I'll be reading it as soon as it comes out, and sharing it with my nephews and nieces too!

Thanks for a great adventure!

The promotional copy is entirely correct: This is not a carbon copy fantasy novel, and the characters are complex. I think I read to page three and had to put the book down to digest what had just happened. I'll grant you that there are dwarves and elves, but they are not clones of anyone elses; they're organic to this world. And every character is refreshingly complex; every character takes action based on their individual knowledge, motiviations and predjudices. The plot emerges from the actions & motivations of the characters and the situation, not the other way around. The characters are also sympathetic; I care about what happens to them. Some of them I don't like, but I sympathize with them, and I care about what happens next.

One other comment I'd make; the author is very clearly a martial artist; budo informs the entire novel, which I think improves the quality of the plotting. The author understands conflict and uses conflict to drive the plot. (He benefits by comparison with other martial artist authors). Budo doesn't take center stage, but a practitioner of budo will appreciate the book a bit more than someone who lacks the expertise.

Mixed feelings on this book. The author seems to be almost trying too hard to create an air of mystery and awe. It seems like everyone you meet is special in some way, which got tiresome at some points.
Having said that, it was an enjoyable read overall, and moved along wihtout getting too bogged down. The end of the book brings some of the elements together in an interesting way, setting the stage for the next book in the series.
This book really seems to have done a lot of background, establishing work for future books in the series, which can be a challenge in this genre of massive world building. The author is not as skilled in this as someone like Sanderson, who seems to weave the understanding of the world more seemlessly, but is making a good effort, and produced an overall enjoyable read.

What a book... Started out slow, with the book establishing the life of the Adepts, which are kind of like monks. Very disciplined way of life. They are hunted by the royals for their powers, and are in hiding. Each year, less and less initiates make their way to the Isle as they are in fear of being killed or killed.

Then one of the Gates to the Aeris plane opens again, there was once a huge war between man and Aeris Lords, and it looks like it will happen again. Their only hope is a young man named Arek, who had the power to absorb magic instead of use it. He is supposed to travel to the gate to disrupt it and close it. But Arek isn't what he seems. Is he actually good, or a force bred for evil?

There are battle scenes, dragons, some humor, and is well written. A solid 4 stars. Will be buying book 2.

There is an intriguing premise here that is slowly revealed and set up for further development/reveal in forthcoming volumes. It is a metaphysical and philosophical speculation on the nature of gods/demons/angels and belief and ritual, not to mention self-deception and exploitation in those beliefs and rituals, plus a dash of technology as magic and aliens as gods.

The book is fast paced and switches between multiple points of view and almost always involves scenes of direct action, particularly once past the initial introductory chapters. The entire book reads like a video game based on martial arts. The characters are very thinly sketched -- the defining traits are how bad-ass are they in one-on-one combat and what is their particular slice of the noble+ pie (everyone is noble+stoic or noble+angry or noble+loyal or noble+unready or noble+grizzled or...... you get the picture)

A great book- hard to believe that this is the debut novel for the VL. A complex story and a great magic system. Story which takes its origins from some of the oldest cultures around the world and no doubt well researched by the author. I always enjoy reading how a fight and combat is described. Will Wight did a great job in the House of Blades series, Robert Jordan of course is legendary in the Wheel of Time series and i enjoyed that aspect of the novel very much.

The story gradually unfolds, the characters get developed and there is enough complexity around the characters, their motivations and actions to keep it interesting. I highly recommend this book to fans of Fantasy Fiction lovers. You will not be dissapointed.

I had seen this book listed for a while, but had a number of other books in my queue so kept putting it off. After finally getting to it, I was very impressed and wish i had gotten to it earlier! The characters were well developed, each with their own flaws. As a story, i loved that there was really no black and white, every character had their motivations which if you looked at it from their point of you, they seemed "in the right". Now that I cant wait for the next book to come out!! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great fantasy story.

I gave this book only three stars because of the ebb and flow of the story. It started out slow and then action took place. And then it died down again. I wished there was more character description. Some characters that were described in detail ended up being not too important to the story.
Overall, this was a good book with a fantastical world never created before. I believe I will read the next book in the series.

Original

Yes, something totally new. Author immediately immerses you into the characters with nice build ups. Just when you think same-same , you get the planes, worlds mixed up with dragons, elves, and dwarfs. But not your typical dragons, elves, and dwarfs, they introduced in a unique, original way. Nice insights, fighting ...

I've been reading Mythborn since I purchased it this morning and I can't put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of engaging, and "smart" SciFi Fantasy. I noticed that V. Lakshman was also the creator of the "Elder Scrolls" hit video game series. Without a doubt, Mythborn would make a fantastic video game!

Wow, not what I expected. Had to get past the first 100 pages, but then it started to roll. Couldn’t put it down!

Summer reading for me... Yeh. All three books and nothing but time. Seems like these were re written or re-released as the first print was a few years ago. Well done - im onto the third book now and the charecters are well formed. I'm rooting for the bad guys most of the time.

Although I generally lean more towards science fiction than fantasy, I am so glad that I took a chance on this one. My only disappointment was getting to the end, being ready to buy the next book and discovering that it wasn't available yet! LOL The characters are well drawn, always important to me, and the story doesn't give away to much of itself which keeps one truly drawn in.

If you want a great read full of action, intrigue and suspense this is it. I thought this was going to be a good light fantasy read that would pass the time till I found something better. How wrong I was. This book has multiple layers and kept me hooked up to the last page. Can't wait until the next book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was different. A lot of books I read and I can just guess what is coming because it is so generic, but not with this book. The characters were awesome. It was really hard for me to pick a side because every character had likable qualities. Definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good read. Can't wait for the next one to come out!

I am an advit reader. Rarely, do I find myself totally captured and unable to put a book down. This was one of the rare ones. The charactors personalities drew me forward into the story line. Each charactor had his/her own strength, while supporting the main charactors. This is a must read. Prepare to be enchanted.

It took me quite a bit to get the grasp of the story due to the vast array of characters and understanding of the world (which is very unique and complex), but once past that the story started to flow. I enjoyed the mix of magic, action and sci-fi and reckon this would make both a great movie & video game. This is a cross between Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and a little Harry Potter.

Hard to believe this a first novel. I couldn't put it down. Great world-building and wonderful and complex characters. I don't always review books I read( just too many ). Highly recommended.

I have been a producer for over 20 years and receive many offerings from agents and managers to review their client's book to turn into a screen play/movie. Mythborn is truly a work of art and can see the project turned into a motion picture. Excellent story line and fascinating characters!

Thoroughly enjoyable epic. It's many twists and fast paced action, delivered an edge your seat ride. The authors martial art experience clearly assisted but didn't detract. Looking forward to the next stanza.

It's nice to see a new author with complex interesting characters who live in a world that has nuance and shades of grey. A refreshing break from too many works where everything is either perfectly good, or perfectly evil.

Bought this ironically because it was Mistborn, but with a lisp. Wasn’t actually going to buy it until I saw Michael Kramer narrated the audiobook. So I gave it a try, and wasn’t disappointed, but the ending felt a little rushed. Overall a good book though and would recommend as a casual read!
