America Mestiza

Mestizo America, the country of the future offers a general panorama of what it calls Our America, that is, Latin America as seen by one of its outstanding writers. It provides detailed analysis of its development, transformations, history and defining social forces. But it is also the evocation of a utopia, of the possibility of creating a supra-national society that ignores the restrictions of frontiers and, thanks to its millenary traditions, creates a common space with a privileged identity that may change the future of the continent. A shared heritage, historical links and a pat that creates solidarity among its nations are the keys to this visionary ideal.

Original and wide-ranging, poetical yet scrupulously accurate, the book demonstrantes, with a wealth of detail, that the countries of Latin America have a common identity strong enough to redefine the destiny of the region, above all, because they share a profound and all-embracing culture whose influence is now being felt throughout the world. This culture couold be the basis for creating a coordinated and balanced economic community, a federated political body and a commonwealth of nations with a dynamic social interchange.

The great challenge for the next century, argues the author, revolves around getting the continent to formulate and establish a political and economic order that is in harmony with the global trends of the modern world. And while the many provinces of Latin America should not lose sight of their peoples' roots and local cultures, the continent must also create optimum strategies for the development of its competitiveness, an indispensable condition for achieving prosperity in a world heading towards integration--an integration that not only requires institutional reforms but also a commitment to Latin American culture as a whole.

This book approaches its subject matter from different angles but all of them converge on a single purpose: to create and strengthen our awareness of the possibilities of a Latin America that is mestizo, that is "ours." It does this through a rigorous and panoramic description of the history of Latin America which not only covers poltics and economics but also its natural setting and geography, literature and art, social and intellectual movements, ethnic groups and local traditions, as well as the achievements of its great men. From the multiple examples given by the author, it is easy to understand that the conditions which may lead to the unification of Latin America do exist and reflect its potential and wealth: there is a new awareness that its inhabitants belong to an authentic world. One of the key arguments, developed in the final chapter, is that any unification of Latin America must be based on an equilibrium between material prosperity and humanism, which, in turn, depends on obtaining a higher level of education and greater degree of democracy for its people, as well as a recognition of their innate dignity.

En 1982 ganó el Premio Nacional de Ensayo de la Universidad de Nariño, Pasto, con el ensayo Aurelio Arturo, la palabra del hombre. En 1986 publicó su primer poemario: Hilo de Arena. El 13 de julio de 1993 fundó -junto a 10 profesionales de distintas áreas- la prestigiosa Revista Número, publicación colombiana de circulación trimestral cuyo propósito es la promoción de la cultura. Fue redactor en la edición dominical de diario La Prensa de Bogotá de 1988 a 1989. Escribió ensayos sobre Lord Byron, Edgar Allan Poe, León Tolstói, Charles Dickens, Emily Dickinson, Las mil y una noches, Alfonso Reyes, Estanislao Zuleta, literatura árabe y las brujas de Macbeth. En 1992 obtuvo el primer Premio Nacional de Poesía del Instituto Colombiano de Cultura. En el año 2005 publicó su primera novela (Ursúa), en la que aborda la historia de Pedro de Ursúa, conquistador español fundador de la ciudad colombiana de Pamplona. Un verdadero testimonio dramático de la colonización.

William Ospina es considerado como uno de los poetas y ensayistas más destacados de las últimas generaciones y sus obras son mapas eruditos de sus amores literarios, acompañados de declaraciones ideológicas sobre la historia y el mundo moderno.

Lo considero un libro necesario de nuestra literatura latinoamericana. Un recorrido bellísimos desde un ensayo que se inunda de las descripciones poéticas de una América diversa y de contrastes.

Me gustó mucho la actitud que desmitifica a la cultura Europea y reivindica lo valioso de la cultura nativa americana. No me gusta mucho las alusiones poéticas y el valor de verdad que este autor le da a la poesía para sustentar sus ideas. También hace una aproximación un poco ingenua de los habitantes del territorio Americano. Hay que reconocer que a pesar de su avanzada cultura, también estaban inmersos en actos de profunda barbarie.

Sin embargo, en términos generales es un buen libro. Un poco repetitivo del discurso tradicional de William Ospina, pero es un buen libro para generar una nueva narrativa sobre la conquista de la América.

Apasionante, clara e interesante. Acompañada de apuntes brillantes sobre cultura, desde literatura hasta las bellas artes y pasando por el lenguaje, William Ospina nos lleva por un recorrido de la historia más allá de las epopeyas, rescatando la visión de distintas culturas y resaltando tanto aquello bueno como lo negativo de lo que nos fue heredado de nuestros antepasados. El libro concluye con una propuesta sobre nuestra posición en el mundo y qué hacer con ella, como vivamente mestizos que somos.

Que mejor introducción a lo que somos, que estás 244 pag?, Este libro me ha llevado a comprender muchas de las características que hoy existen a nivel cultural en la América mestiza, a demás de alimentar aún más mi curiosidad histórica. Muy necesaria su lectura para los nacidos en esta parte del mundo.

Buena exposición que relata el proceso de colonización y lo cruel que esta fue, acto seguido describe el proceso de independencia; esas grandes hazañas representadas en caudales de sangre y finalmente analiza los retos que deben ser afrontados que todo el pueblo continental irá atravesando sembrando el espacio para la duda además de la reflexión.
