Out of the pages, he came.

Into the pages, she went.

With one piece of an ancient text secured, Aurelia and Kayce are closer to repairing the realms of human imagination.

However, as they race to locate the next piece of the elusive Initiis, darkness closes in. Caught between her forbidden feelings for Kayce and her obligations to the Flameheart Order, Aurelia's heart is divided.

She travels from world to world, desperate to make things right and to avenge her grandfather's death. But another family secret threatens to send her tumbling back into the mental turmoil she once escaped.

Kayce doesn't know where he belongs. Even in Norenth, he is the prince without a place. Searching for the Initiis would truly give him a semblance of purpose—if not for Aurelia's distance, their last embrace a ghost between them. When a tragic trick sends Kayce reeling, it may cost him everything, including the best friend he has loved for years.

Fear is on the hunt—and it's waiting to devour. For darkness has its own story to tell.

Fair warning, I haven’t SOBBED while reading a book since I finished The Fellowship of the Ring when I was 15 . . . Until this book. Yeah, you’re gonna need some tissues, chocolate, maybe some baby griffin snuggles. I honestly don’t know what to tell you 😭

I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to move on from this book. I was sobbing my eyes out reading the last quarter of this book. Kayce and Aurelia—my poor traumatized babies 😭😭😭

Somehow Dalton and Emily have topped Flameheart—which I didn’t think was possible—and delivered another masterfully told story full of love, grief, courage, family, and chivalry that will be a favorite of mine for many years to come! I loved how we got to explore more of Norenth and the Emperium, as well as getting to know all of the characters more deeply!

I don’t think words can ever do justice to how I feel about this story. The emphasis on courage and running toward the roar, even when you are terrified, resonated deeply with me. This story, these characters, are one that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

* I received an eARC from the author’s & publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The moment I realized we were getting Kayce’s POV, I was thrilled. After Flameheart, I desperately wanted to get inside his head and figure out what was really going on in there…

Five percent into the book and I was already giggling and kicking my feet. Then “the Thing” happened… and I was absolutely rolling on the floor laughing 🤣 I also had so much fun spotting all the little Easter eggs and references to books I know and love. Those details made the reading experience even more special.

But this book doesn’t let you stay comfortable for long.

I thought chapter 10 was heartbreaking. Then chapter 11 somehow managed to make it even worse. I was completely devastated. Just when I needed a moment to recover from that nightmare, the adorable baby griffin appeared and briefly stitched my heart back together… only for the story to rip it apart all over again.

From that point on, I was constantly on edge. Even the quiet moments felt like the calm before another emotional storm.

And then came the second half.

Forget chapters 10 and 11. They were only the beginning. Every chapter shattered another piece of my heart, and I genuinely believed my soul would never recover. I spent the entire ending dreading what I thought was coming, and right up until the final sentences I was bracing for complete devastation.

Thankfully, the twist wasn’t what I expected, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so relieved to be wrong.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that I have a soft spot for books that emotionally destroy me. At this rate, I’m going to need a separate shelf dedicated entirely to stories that leave me crying my eyes out.

Dalton and Emily, thank you again for reaching out and giving me the opportunity to read this series. Flameheart made me fall in love with your world, but Ashfall completely cemented it. You officially have my loyalty, and I’ll be impatiently waiting to see where this story goes next ❤️‍🩹

I thought the way it was written by (TWO) authors but truly the writing was so seamless between the two it felt like it was authored by one person completely. That was just awe striking in it of itself!

The romance was so sweet, and I love how the perspectives between the two main characters were truly their own, but the storyline seemed to flow so so well. By the time I reached the end of the book, I began to absolutely love where this series was headed.

This truly is a book that if you attempt to start the series with this book you will absolutely be left confused, so not a standalone, but such a good jump from Flameheart into continuing the trajectory of Kayce and Aurelia.
There were parts that made me laugh, and the pain of life that burdened my soul because of it's realism.
This is a book that I could truly see any boy loving and really appreciate reading such a different style of a romantasy style book. I truly haven't read another book like this!

This series is so good! Adventure, romance, and amazing storytelling. This second book is following the Flamehearts footsteps of being such a great YA fantasy. I love that the romance is so good while still being clean. I am invested in Kayce and Aurelia’s relationship. I loved the side characters roles in this book especially. They just added so much to the story and really made the book for me. Highly recommend this for any fantasy lovers out there.

I was stoked to get an ARC of the highly anticipated book 2 in the Flameheart Chronicles. I enjoyed the continuing world building and getting more answers for the characters.

“Fear is a hunter, but the Light spares us from its trappings. Without His wisdom, this story of the hope that prevails through despair would not exist.”

I loved that book 1 had a very slow-burn romance and tackled some very real mental health topics. Book 2 has gone deeper into this but I felt the romance may have taken too much of a front seat here. I love a bit of romance and I like the boundaries the characters set for themselves later on, but despite being closed door it was a little too much yearning for me.

Even so, I had a lot of highlights. Enjoy this random assortment of my faves.

“Remorse is a hunter. So is fear, grief. They’ll track you down until you are against a wall.” With a gentle squeeze, Mom added, “But walls can fall.”

“Run scared, but run forward. That’s the only way out.”

“It didn’t do the heart good to be alone.”

“But don’t you see how these secrets meant to shield have only caused harm?”

Devastation reached an icy hand inside Aurelia’s chest and squeezed.

Now, he was a specter of stolen peace and haunted dreams.

Death is love’s graveyard.

“you were never meant to do this life alone.”

The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien meets Tales of Wonder and Woe by Renee Dugan in the newest installment of the Flameheart Chronicles, Ashfall.

This is a fantasy that doesn’t shy away from heavy and dark stories but still offers the light of hope—in the vein of Erin Phillips. Readers will easily find themselves immersed in Norenth as threats still loom, and the additional POV allows readers to connect more deeply to Kayce as well as Aurelia.

The romance is central to the storyline, and one thing I must specifically commend the authors on is how they navigate teen emotions/thoughts and why there is a boundary in terms of physical desire/intimacy the couple doesn’t cross. “Honor isn’t old fashioned, it’s the way I live”—YA needs this type of realistic portrayal of feelings real teenagers experience while also modeling self-restraint (and the why behind it). It’s not something I’ve seen addressed and for it to be done so gracefully? *applause + standing ovation*

Some of my other favorite quotes from Ashfall:

- “In a world gone mad, only the crazy can be sane. The future will always be unknown…Unless you act.”
- “What I feel for you cannot be contained to a story.”
- “Since she was a child, she’d broken herself to be everything for everyone. She’d realized lately…that the broken pieces she offered could only cut them. Those she loved deserved better than that.”
- “I’m scared.” “Do it scared!” “Run scared, but run forward.”
- “You were born to chase the stars…And I was born to help you reach them.”
- “No one had told her that grief was a series of goodbyes.”
- “their love wasn’t a star—it was the crystalline ingrained into the mountain. Steadfast and everlasting.”
- “Darkness was a hunter. But so was she.”
- “The darkest nights will always end with light.”

Overall, this is a beautiful narrative that addresses tough topics including grief, depression, trauma, and navigating continuing on when you feel utterly broken by a broken, evil world—this with the nightmare imagery and fantasy violence, I recommend to older teens (16+) and adults. Whoever you are, be sure to have tissues on hand when you sit down to read because you will experience all the emotions!!

Thank you to the authors and publisher for an advanced copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and shared of my own volition.

This was a wild ride! Ashfall is much darker than book one, the stakes are higher, the yearning is stronger, and the best part--we get Kayce's POV!!
I love how Ashfall really expanded the world, and I got to see more creatures and realms inside the emperium!
The only reasons I didn't love this one as much as Flameheart, is because I though the plot was a bit chaotic and the romance felt a bit over the top. But overall, I did close the book enjoying it despite my personal gripes with it 🤪 I still recommend this book, and I'm already ready for the final installment!

🖋p r o s e🖋
To be perfectly honest, the prose is not my favorite. Imo, a lot of sentences sound oddly worded, and the dialogue doesn't feel super natural. It's almost like everything and everyone is trying too hard to sound poetic... Really just not my style, but that's okay! Even though that lowers my rating, I still love the world and characters!

☀️ w o r l d • b u i l d i n g☀️
This is definitely my favorite part of the Flameheart Chronicles! Readers get to see more of the emperium in Ashfall, which was so exciting! I loved all the new worlds, creatures, and monster battles. I especially loved seeing more of Norenth, like Kayce and his brothers training, new parts of the castle, and even getting to experience a few of their holidays! Ultimate cozy vibes 🌙 🍂
I loved that Aurelia got to visit the library sphere too, which is literally a booklover's dream!
This makes me very to see what other places we might get to experience in the final installment of the series!

⚔️ p l o t + p a c i n g⚔️
This is really the main thing that lowered my rating. While the first book, Flameheart, has a clear plot and goal, Ashfall felt very chaotic and even after reading, I don't really know what they accomplished in the end.
Obviously they're trying to defeat the main villain, but I feel like there was so many other things going on at the same time, that I got completely lost. There was no time for me to take a breath and relax in between the action. Some of it felt so easy, while everything else felt unnecessarily hard, for whatever reason. In short, the reward for all the emotional trauma was lacking and it felt... unearned and confusing.
Aside from the negative comments though, I did enjoy more focus on Kayce and his personal struggles. The dreams and visions both Kayce and Aurelia experienced really added to their character arcs!

👑c h a r a c t e r s👑
I really loved how we got to see more of the Weatherstone brothers in Ashfall! There was a lot more build-up for Kayce in this book, and I could understand his struggles better.
I loved how Aurelia continued to grow as well, and how she could use her strengths to balance Kayce's weaknesses!
However, like the plot, I feel like it ended with unclear character arcs. Yes, I understand there's another book after this one, and a lot of hard things happened to them throughout Ashfall. But at the same time, there should be some sort of resolution. When Kayce started emotionally blocking himself out at the end of the book, it felt like he was undoing everything he'd been working towards throughout the book. It felt very disappointing and frustrating as the reader.

❤️‍🔥r o m a n c e❤️‍🔥
I really have a love/hate relationship with the romance plot in this series 🤣 (And yes, I said plot).
Literally 70% of this book is freaking romance. Which is not necessarily a problem, it's just the fact that there was sooo much of it. Like, quite a bit more romance than would be expected when the characters' world is literally ripping apart around them (quite literally).
Don't get me wrong--I do think the romance is sweet. I do think Kayce and Aurelia have chemistry, and the yearning is definitely... yearning.
But as another ARC reader said, so much of it felt forced. It was like, if the characters weren't kissing in every chapter, the readers will forget how in love they are. It started to annoy me, because then it didn't feel realistic AT ALL.
Like, two eighteen year olds sharing passionate make-out sessions every time they see each other... it just felt too mature to the point that I was rolling my eyes not even half-way through.
Because it was SO CRINGE. There so many scenes I just--could not.
Kayce even got a little aggressive that pulled me out of the book. It's always crazy to me how the MMCs are always great characters until they have a girl to "protect" and suddenly he's grouchy, moody, and just a littttlllleeeee bit toxic. 😬
I know a lot of people enjoyed the romance, but to me it felt like every other romance in mainstream books these days, which was kind of disappointing.
I don't want to keep going, but basically I felt like it could have been done better.

⚠️c o n t e n t⚠️
Language: None.
Violence: A lot of scary imagery, monsters, battles, injury, and blood. All PG-13 violence, but no graphic gore.
Spice: A lot of mature romance, with frequent, passionate kissing. Some slight innuendos (which was honestly just disappointing).
Other: A lot of heavy themes like grief and emotional trauma.

f i n a l • t h o u g h t s
Even though I think Ashfall needed a lot of developmental editing and I didn't personally love all the content, I still closed the book enjoying the journey and excited for book 2! Special thank you again to the authors for an ARC!!

Warnings: PTSD, trauma, grief, violence, nightmares, anxiety, paranoia (the authors include a content advisory)

First off, I don't think any of my words can fully encompass the emotions I felt while reading this book!
This was a wonderful installment to this young adult fantasy series! It was a fast-paced, high-stakes, heartbreaking story, with a no-spice romance. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book and I was so moved by each element of the story and the characters that brought it to life. The world-building was phenomenal, and the authors wove everything together flawlessly. Each character's growth throughout the book was exceptional, and the struggles that they experienced drove them on their journeys through fear and grief. I loved how Aurelia and Kayce drew closer together, how relentless their love for each other was, and how they reminded one another that they are never truly alone. This is a story that will stay with me for years to come, and I highly recommend it for readers with lots of soul!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy with no expectation of a review. All opinions are my own.

Hi! Let me start with this: I love the quotes at the beginning.

I believe C.S. Lewis is one of the founders of what we nowadays know as fantasy, creating stories that have inspired so many readers to become authors. It is a beautiful wink to the main plotline of the story and the context of Aurelia's journey.

Before I give spoilers away, let's start with the review:

About Aurelia:

I loved that her character development from the last book wasn't lost, but only needed updating. By this, I mean that she didn't lose the confidence Kayce and Fee helped her find, but instead gained perfectionism, impostor syndrome (and a tad of PTSD, because why not).

Sometimes in the sequel of a series, authors repeat the character development or simply forget that characters can grow more, so there's not much evolution from the first book. Most of the time, the storylines take all the focus, so the empathy or connection between the reader and the main characters gets lost. As a reader, you no longer want to read that series.

But that is why I love Aurelia; she's always learning and changing. She's a complex FMC. In one chapter she can be conflicted about her feelings for Kayce, in another she's stuck with pain and grief, and in the next she's feeling scared because of the tears. She's not a linear character, and that is awesome for the dynamic between her and the plot.

When I read Flameheart, I connected with Aurelia's character. Like her, I'm no good at processing grief and allowing others to help, so it was interesting that a FMC could be written as someone who also gets overwhelmed by her own thoughts and emotions.

Most FMCs are focused on the narrative of "I'll do it on my own" or "I'm strong enough by myself," so it felt refreshing that both the narrative and Aurelia's storyline teach that it's okay to feel alone and like you're not enough—but feeling it doesn't make it true. As someone with anxiety, it feels nice to be encouraged by Aurelia's growth.

About Kayce:

We finally got his POV! Since I finished Flameheart, I was dying to get his perspective on everything happening, and it was much more than I imagined.Flameheart wrote Kayce as a character from Aurelia's head, so his profile centered on characteristics that we readers want to see in a MMC: being the rebellious prince with everyone else but kindly and fiercely protective of the FMC, loyal to death to her, and possessing many other fairytale values. But by giving him a POV within this book, we get to read about his perspective and feelings in stressful situations. This allows readers to connect and empathize with him as his own person, not just a side character or Aurelia's best friend.

In Flameheart, we almost always got a carefree attitude from Aurelia's descriptions, but throughout Ashfall, it was interesting to read that he is actually really stressed about the danger of the Nightmares, the damage made by them, the whole situation with the tears, and his own feelings about Aurelia—all while handling his responsibilities as a prince and a Ranger.

I admire his self-control and honesty. We hardly ever get an MMC with such self-control, or a narrative that supports restraint regarding the romantic feelings of the MCs, so it was nice to read about these qualities in Kayce. I loved that he proved his love with both actions and words. As someone whose love language is acts of service, Kayce changed my standard for fictional (and real) crushes. I mean, he literally sacrifices himself for her at one point (or many, honestly)—that is a whole new level of loving someone to death.

I love that his narrative felt very Percy Jackson (that honest and sarcastic essence), but honestly, that's the only point of comparison. Kayce is making his own trope and distinction as a main character.

About the world-building and plotline:

One amazing detail that I loved from Flameheart was the mention of different worlds or "planets," so I loved that in Ashfall we get the endless possibility of different worlds. Believe me, it didn't disappoint.

The descriptions remained diverse and full of unique ideas. I didn't just imagine the same scene with different color scales, but complete and complex places. I also loved the subtle easter eggs about the worlds they visited.

I liked how each character and creature written into the storyline had a sense of purpose. It helps maintain a good flow while reading and prevents choppy dialogue and transitions between characters.

Normally, I get upset when authors include too many characters in a series because by book two they are forgotten, but I felt a real sense of continuity with the characters present from book one. Also, those fighting sequences throughout the whole book were amazing!

I'm obsessed with action movies and series, so it was awesome to admire Kayce's ability with his sword and strategic movements, alongside Aurelia's critical thinking skills while fighting. They were simple enough for me to understand every move that happened, yet perfectly balanced with the internal dialogue explaining what the character is experiencing during the fight. Amazing!

About the dynamic between MCs:

At first, I was very confused. They left Flameheart after such a romantic, or at least clearer, moment, and then starting book two things got awkward. But boy, that changed fast!I'm always a fan of friends-to-lovers (if it's well-written; I hate the miscommunication trope), and here it is full of teasing, yearning, and patience from both characters.

I mean, I was either laughing because of Kayce's ability to distract Aurelia (and vice versa) or blushing at their interactions (why did they make him so flirty and a gentleman at the same time?).

Also, I loved the exchange of gestures between Fee and Terranth. It was priceless to read about them both teaching Kayce while Fee ignored her own advice. Terranth didn't lie when he said he wanted to marry her—I mean, everything Terranth did was very clear of his intentions, but Fee ignored it or didn't want to see it. It was ironic.

Also, why Chapter 50?! I was shocked and crying. Warning: have emotional support and tissues ready, because the brick was definitely kissed when the authors threw it.

Final Thoughts:

I'm honestly amazed by how an amazing book could be as traumazing as this, especially since my mind is completely blown. I'm in awe of how great writing can transport you into a story and allow us to learn through our favorite characters, and Dalton and Emily Bequette are a prime example of that.

Thank you to the authors; it is a privilege to leave an early review and to experience Aurelia and Kayce's story. I believe this is part of the next generation of fantasy books that will help shape younger (and not-so-young) readers.

So, if you're a reader in need of a new series to obsess over, and you love Narnia, Percy Jackson, and A Wrinkle in Time, then this book is for you.

ENG:
If I had to summarize this book in 5 songs, I would nominate: Just Like Fire (P!nk), Ordinary (Alex Warren), My Tears Ricochet (Taylor Swift), The Cure (Olivia Rodrigo), Can’t Catch Me Now (Olivia Rodrigo). As you can see, it was a constant rollercoaster of emotions.

I'm obsessed with this Portal Fantasy. Seriously, it's phenomenal! I have so many feelings that it left me with a tremendous hangover. It's the first time in a long time that I've felt the urge to immerse myself in a book's story, no matter how dangerous it may be.

It had a good balance of: Best Friends and Slow Burn to Lovers, more angst than I expected from different points of view, plenty of action, good timing for the comedy, and each character was their own universe ;)

I really appreciate how many loose ends they tied up from the first installment. The history and lore enriched the world-building. Also, how they took the younger brother archetype who needs to be protected and broke it to give more autonomy to that character .

In SPOILER ZONE:

What I think could have been better:

Anyway, that cliffhanger was brutal. I NEED THE THIRD BOOK plus the animated movie. Every sleepless night was worth it because the kisses and magic took my breath away. I can't wait for this fandom to grow. Thank you so much for the arc!

🦪🦪🦪🦪⚪🦪🦪🦪🦪

ESP:
Si tuviera que hacer un resumen en 5 canciones de cómo se sintió este libro nominará a: Just Like Fire (P!nk), Ordinary (Alex Warren), My Tears Ricochet (Taylor Swift), The Cure (Olivia Rodrigo), Can’t Catch Me Now (Olivia Rodrigo).

I received an ARC of Ashfall from authors Dalton and Emily Bequette, the second book in the Flameheart Chronicles. It is a direct sequel to Flameheart that would not work as a standalone due to the heavy exposition and backstory requiring readers to familiarize themselves with the first book. Since it is written in a similar style, people who enjoyed the first installment will likely enjoy this one as well. As an older reader, I had a bit of a rough time with it. The concepts introduced in Flameheart were fascinating and unique, yet as a sequel, aside from a few surprising revelations, Ashfall was a bit tedious for me.

In Flameheart, Aurelia learns that she has the ability to travel to fictional worlds and to bring characters from her imagination to life, particularly Prince Kayce, her imaginary lover. However, the book contains little exploration of the psychological effects of falling for a fictional character. Instead, it is assumed that the reader automatically wants them to be together, and loads of otherworldly obstacles are thrown in the way. As much as I enjoy the concept of portal fantasy, this book packed in so many battles and world-jumping that I had a hard time keeping up. The story never gives the reader a chance to breathe or to explore the emotional effects of the main couple's relationship, which should be wrought with emotional struggles due to both of them being from separate worlds.

There were a few parts near the middle of the book that I enjoyed, particularly the backstory of Aurelia's mother. The revelation of Cordelia's past explained why she didn't support Aurelia's obsession with other worlds in the first book, as well as the reason Aurelia is so powerful as a Flameheart. This was an excellent addition that foreshadowed the challenges that Aurelia might face in future books. I wish more time had been spent focusing on that. In fact, I may have enjoyed this book more if it had been a prequel about Aurelia's mother instead of spending so many chapters on endless battles throughout the worlds.

The Flameheart Chronicles introduces some unique concepts, yet Ashfall missed a lot of opportunities to explore them further. The idea that Aurelia can imagine other worlds and characters and bring them to life using a magic pen creates endless potential for creative storytelling. However, the books don't really show her using her abilities to bring new ideas into the world, except for Kayce, whose relationship with her feels a bit forced. Unlike Between the Lines, we don't see his feelings for her grow over time. They are there because she decided he would always be there for her when she created him as her imaginary friend as a child.

Overall, Ashfall is an action-packed sequel that continues the story introduced in Flameheart. Since so much of it depends upon understanding the concepts introduced in the first book, I strongly recommend reading Flameheart first. It works adequately as a continuation but can come off as tedious at times due to the nonstop fighting. I enjoyed the backstory of Aurelia's mother and the shocking, dramatic twist at the end. However, I would have preferred more time to explore Aurelia's abilities as a Flameheart and to her relationship with Kayce instead of non-stop battles with the Hunter and his lackeys.

Ashfall

Ashfall is the second book in the Flameheart Chronicles by Dalton & Emily Bequette. Aurelia, the FMC, is a Flameheart, a writer whose words have power. Specifically, a Flameheart’s written words have the power to create fantasy worlds. Writers can go into these worlds and the characters can come out.

At the end of Flameheart, the forbidden romance between Aurelia and Kaycee begins to bloom, and their relationship continues to develop in Ashfall. While they try to be secretive about their relationship, everyone around them already has it figured out and is thrilled once they no longer hide their feelings.

In Ashfall, Kayce and Aurelia continue their quest to find the missing pieces of the ancient relic that can repair the rifts in Norenth and repair earth. New challenges and darkness arise to foil their plans. Just as Flameheart was full of plot twists and turns, these plot twists continue in Ashfall. Not only are there plot twists and turns, Ashfall ends on quite the cliffhanger!

If you enjoy YA portal fantasy with all the swoon and no spice, Ashfall is for you!

I highly recommend Ashfall. I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review, and the thoughts are my own.

Blurb
Out of the pages, he came.
Into the pages, she went.
But darkness lurks between them.
Aurelia’s heart is divided between her forbidden feelings for Kayce and her obligations to the Flameheart Order. With one piece of an ancient relic secured, Aurelia and Kayce are closer to repairing the realms of human imagination. Though desperate to save her wounded kingdom, another secret threatens Aurelia’s newfound courage—forcing her to question everything.
Kayce doesn’t know where he belongs. Even in Norenth, he is the prince without a place. Scouring new worlds for the next piece of the elusive Initiis would give him a semblance of purpose if not for Aurelia’s distance—despite their last embrace burning between them. However, a new agent of darkness arises, and it may cost Kayce everything to face it… including the best friend he has loved for years.
Fear is on the hunt, and it’s waiting to devour—for darkness has its own story to tell.
For fans of classics like C. S. Lewis's Narnia and the modern fantasies of the Shadowhunter Chronicles and Once Upon a Broken Heart, the second installment of the Flameheart Chronicles is a harrowing journey into the dark night of the soul–and the hope we cling to for a story that will never end.

Some books captivate you with their magic. Others capture your heart because of the people who inhabit their pages.

Ashfall reminds us that the greatest adventures aren’t measured by the worlds we explore…

…but by the people we share them with.

From its opening pages, Ashfall rewards curiosity. Every revelation feels purposeful, every mystery invites another question, and the deeper the story goes, the more you realise how much is still waiting to be discovered.

Yet, for all the wonder of its world-building, the true heart of Ashfall lies within its characters.

Aurelia continues to grow with quiet courage, carrying both hope and heartbreak in equal measure, while Kayce remains one of the most genuinely kind and steadfast protagonists I’ve encountered in fantasy, even as he grapples with feeling untethered and uncertain of where he truly belongs. Their connection is a beautiful reminder that the strongest romances often begin with trust, friendship, and unwavering loyalty. And when that slow burn finally blossoms into something more… it’s impossible not to smile (cue the happy squeals, Olympic-level foot kicking, and me whisper-yelling “FINALLY!”).

Just as powerful is the story’s reminder that we were never meant to carry life’s burdens alone. Through friendship, family, and unwavering loyalty, Ashfall thoughtfully explores the strength found in allowing others to walk beside us. It’s these relationships that give Ashfall its greatest emotional depth.

One of Ashfall‘s greatest strengths lies beyond its protagonists. Its supporting cast doesn’t simply fill the spaces between major moments—they breathe life into every page of this ever-expanding world. Each character brings something uniquely their own, making the story feel deeply authentic and impossible to leave behind.

What continues to set The Emperium Chronicles apart is the balance between wonder and darkness. Even as the shadows deepen and the stakes continue to rise, hope remains the thread woven through every chapter. This is a story that never loses sight of the beauty found in imagination, courage, friendship, and choosing the dawn when it would be easier to surrender to the dark.

Ashfall is a story that continues to grow in both heart and scope, drawing you further into the Emperium and making it all the harder to say goodbye.

As the story draws to a close, you’re left with the unmistakable feeling that the journey is far from over…

…and the certainty that you’ll be counting down the days until you return.

Thank you, Dalton and Emily Bequette, for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of Ashfall. It has been a genuine joy to return to Norenth and the ever-expanding Emperium, and I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced the next chapter of this remarkable journey ahead of its release.

Emotional damage in the best way possible! 5/5 stars. ⭐

Disclaimer: I received an early copy from the authors but my review is voluntary.

If you thought Flameheart was a great start to the trilogy, Ashfall is on another level. Honestly? It’s amazing.

The writing style is just as great as the first one, and another win? I didn't spot a single typo. The pacing was perfect, it didn’t feel dragged out, but it didn't race through the story either. Everything happened when it needed to. It’s that same fantasy vibe with a slow-burn romance (no spice!) that I loved in book one.

I also have to shout out all the little nods to other series. I spotted references to Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and yes… I am 99% sure I saw a Throne of Glass reference (that shapeshifting comment?!). There was even a subtle "IT" reference with the sewers and red balloons! I love it when authors do that.

SPOILER WARNING - STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED IT!

Favorite quotes that I had to highlight:

"All of the seas and stars couldn't part them, darkness could devour them, but he would never cease reaching for her." — Kayce

"You and I? We defy the odds. We face whatever comes, together.. I'm with you, Aurelia. Always. It's more than the oath of a child. It's now the oath of a man. A declaration that I will stand by your side, fight by your side, and if necessary, die by your side. I fell in love with you a long time ago. And I will always love you." — Kayce

"He hooked a finger under her chin to lightly tug her face upwards. 'You thirsted for adventure. I provided that, but do not mistake my intention. Never once were you in a position that you could not handle.'" — Kayce

"You were born to chase the stars, Aurelia," she murmured, "And I was born to help you reach them." — Fee

I am desperately waiting for book 3!

"Why is this so hard?" Aurelia's voice broke. "Because," the Smith embraced her, the smoke clinging to his clothes settling something in her, "you were never meant to do this life alone,"

I can probably count on my hands the books I have read in my life that had me shedding real tears, Ashfall has now been added to that list. The above quote from the book I think sums up Ashfall as a whole pretty well, this book will break your heart on many different levels and more than once.

I love reading new authors, it is so interesting to see the writting develop as they continue to release books. Flameheart was good but Ashfall is on a entirely different level. More feelings, more sparks, more scary, more emotional, more world building, just so much MORE. I honestly almost did not join the Ashfall street team because while I enjoyed Flamheart I just was not sure if I had the time for Ashfall, if it would be worth my time. I would have made such a huge mistake! I am now really looking forward to the next book and will be jumping at the chance of a ARC.

Ashfall is a unique blend of a high fantasy feel and modern setting. The villain in this is very evil, no doubts this guy is not just bad he is evil. As such things get a little intense on the scary side, there is some torture that just breaks your heart. Something I really appreciated about Ashfall is its very realistic depiction of feelings and how life affects the characters. When bad things happen it is not all buck up we are needed and never mentioned agian. The effects linger, they change how the characters act, these things have to be worked through. Words and actions have meaning and far reaching repercussions.

It did bother me this book is labled YA and has some rather descriptive make out scenes, they were not to far but they were pretty much right on my line of what I am comfortable with as a adult. I see what the authors were doing to set up how having boundaries is important, but I do not think things had to be that descriptive to make the point.

You do need to read these books in order, Ashfall is the second. While labeled YA it is definitely upper YA, for more than just the make out scenes, the evil gets creepy and can be a bit disturbing.

The author generously gifted a copy of the book to my ever growing horde of books takeing over my house. My opinions, like my book horde, are large, uncontrollable, and all mine!

This book should come with a warning label... once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down! Cancel all your plans and get comfortable. Make a cup of tea, find a fuzzy blanket, and keep those tissues CLOSE!
Being an ARC reader for Ashfall was one of the best things ever! It blew me out of the water! Some middle books are like a lag in the middle of a series... Ashfall is the complete opposite! This book makes it to the list of my top five all time reads!
More family secrets, more battling nightmares, and more romance! Ashfall has it all!
***Contains Minor Spoilers***
While Flameheart was single POV, Ashfall is a multi POV book... which means we get more Kayce! Getting a deeper look at his character was one of the best things about this book. Readers will love him even more once they meet the demons haunting our new favorite green-flag book boyfriend. Some of the chapters in his POV will break. your. heart. You will want to crawl into the book and give him a hug... But unfortunately you aren't a Flameheart (that I know of at least) so you can't.
Aurelia continues to be a fantastically written FMC. Seeing her character arc from the beginning of book one to the end of book two is a work of art on it's own. She is strong yet feminine and a wonderful role model for any younger readers who open this book.
Everything in this book is kicked up a notch from book one. From the violence and villains to the romance, the intensity is a bit higher, but everything is still PG and spice free!
We get a closer look at one of the villains, he is absolutely diabolical and might give you anger issues. With a villain now appearing on the page, the violence is more frequent but the descriptions are not more graphic.
There are a few on page character deaths which might bother some readers, especially those who have experienced loss. The Bequettes continue to masterfully address the theme of grief that was introduced in book one, and in book two it is explored on even deeper levels.
The romance takes a more central role in this book, with more on page kisses that are given a bit more description, though still all sweet swoon and no spice.
This book did not disappoint and surpassed all my expectations by a mile! I can promise you it will leave you begging for more... and the ending will leave you absolutely floored!

🚨 SPOILER ALERT: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I am giving Ashfall by Dalton Bequette and Emily Bequette a spectacular 4-star review. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
So you know that feeling when book 2 is better than book 1? Yes. It's here! This sequel is an absolute must-have for your Kindle, stepping up the stakes, the action, and the romance in the best possible way.
ARC Disclosure: Thank you so much to the authors, Dalton Bequette and Emily Bequette, for providing an early digital review copy (eARC). All opinions shared in this review are completely my own!
The Review
Ashfall builds beautifully upon the foundations laid in the first installment, expanding the universe into something much more intense and gripping. This sequel wastes no time plunging readers directly into the heart of a brewing conflict, matching dangerous inter-world politics with deeply personal character stakes. The narrative naturally evolves into a broader, more dynamic fantasy epic while keeping the core relationships fiercely protected at the center of the storm.
The Good
Book 1 Flameheart took me a while to connect with... but Ashfall? I was all in from the beginning! The plot here is so much more active, with fights between worlds and lots and lots of slow burn and yearning. And finally, finally, we get Kayce POV chapters! We needed him, and I'm glad we were given the chance to read him. I loved how this part of the story moved on and kept important characters present.
The worldbuilding was very clear, and the Hunter truly gave me goosebumps—what a hateful thing! The authors did an incredible job making the threat feel tangible and terrifying. I really want to see how everything unfolds, especially after that ending... For lion's roar, right? 😉
The Not So Good
Though I will not give major spoilers here... was you-know-what really necessary? I guess it was in terms of Kayce's character development, but also... no, it wasn't! 😱 😢 😭 It was an absolute emotional gut-punch that left me completely devastated, even if it pushed the arc forward

I don’t even know where to start. Somehow this sequel was just as good as book one, and I honestly didn’t think that was possible.

There are so many layers to this story, and the character growth was one of my favorite parts. This book deals with grief on so many different levels, and every storyline felt meaningful. It was emotional, deep, and so beautifully written.

One of my absolute favorite things about this series is the family dynamic. The brotherhood is just top-tier, and I loved getting to see more of those relationships. And Kayce and Aurelia…after the slow burn in book one, getting to watch their relationship grow in this one was so rewarding. It was sweet, heartfelt, and had me melting 🫠.

This book also isn’t afraid to tackle some heavier topics, but they’re handled with so much depth and purpose. Nothing felt like it was there just for shock value—it all served the story and the characters so well.

And yes…everyone who told me to have tissues and chocolate ready was 100% right. You’ll definitely want the tissues, and the chocolate will help afterward. 😂

I’m already dying to know what happens in book three because I have so many questions. And the ending absolute 🔥. This is definitely a series I’ll be talking about for a long time, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Content note: While this series remains firmly in the young adult genre, there is discussion of a premarital relationship. It’s handled thoughtfully without being glorified, and the consequences of those choices are addressed throughout the story. The book also briefly addresses sexual temptation in a thoughtful, honest way, and I appreciated how it was handled, especially the fatherly advice ✨

Steamier kisses and all the yearning but no spice or language.

First, I want to thank Dalton and Emily for the gifted eARC of Ashfall to read and provide my honest, spoiler free review. I was part of the arc team for the first book and I’m so honored to still be a part of the team for book two.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Thoughts:
Ashfall met all my expectations and then some. This entire chronicle series has stolen my heart from the very first book. It brings out so many feelings of nostalgia that I felt when I first got into reading when I was younger. Dalton and Emily managed to bring such a safe space to readers who were looking for something like this to bring them back into the reading world.

I loved this second installment in the Flameheart chronicles. The story drew me in immediately and I loved being able to see more of our characters as well as the journey that they go on. I really liked how we got a lot more of Kayce’s perspective in this story and his emotions and thoughts swallowed up my heart completely and made me love him even more than I already did. Kayce and Aurelia have such a beautiful bond and friendship but their romance did grow more in this story but what these authors do best is making this romance feel so respectful and light especially considering it’s a YA story.

With darkness chasing after Aurelia, Kayce and their friends there was such a sense of urgency to find the next piece of Initiis. Everything was weighing down on all of them and I liked seeing how they all grew through this experience together. The character development was great and I really enjoyed all the elements that threw a wrench into their plans. It brought so much to the table that I found myself reading through this book in one day. I can’t wait to see more from these authors in the future!

Where do I even begin? Ashfall is an incredible continuation of the Flameheart chronicles. The first book had me falling in love with the idea of being transported into my favorite stories, this book we get to build a relationship with all the characters, seeing them in a new light, I might dare to say this is my favorite book so far.

Of the series, of 2026, the answer is yes.

There is so much that I loved in this book. I don’t want to spoil much so I won’t talk about it all, but trying to figure out who you really are and your calling in this life in the midst of loss, fear, grief, and the standards of others (and even ourselves) is such a hard thing in normal life and to see it transported and worked through in a book series is inspiring. Every relationship changed, grew, broke, and healed in some of the most beautiful of ways. The one-on-one conversations throughout the book had to be some of my favorite moments.

Gaining Kayce’s POV in this book was a wonderful addition, that added such wonderful depth and realness to a character who is “more than just a story”. His fierceness, loyalty, and love for those around him, added to the roguish, younger prince we all loved in the last book. His and Aurelia’s relationship truly ignited in this book, but not without storms to weather—like any real, deep connection and I adored cheering them on.

I could go on and on about this book, but I will save the best parts for you all to read. I physically cannot wait for the next book in this series.

Five out of five stars from my shelf to yours!

Ashfall is a solid continuation of the story begun in Flameheart while also feeling like a departure from it. I was drawn to Flameheart, book one in this series, because I’m a sucker for bookish portal fantasies. But Ashfall is where the series begins to feel much more like pure romantasy, which isn’t my genre of choice. I prefer romance as a subplot instead of the largest area of focus, though that’s a highly subjective issue.

However.

By the last 150 pages, I was gripped tight by the story being told. I was deeply invested in not only the plot, but the drama unfolding across multiple relationships. The latter being the main reason I’m not usually a fan of romantasy. Relationship drama in general makes my psyche break out in proverbial hives. There are a lot of books and television series I’ve had to step away from because that type of drama evokes a physical response from me, causing my body to become so tense that I can no longer find any enjoyment in the story being told.

Early in the book, I was starting to feel that way about Ashfall. But thankfully, the authors seemed to know exactly when to throttle back, in a sense, and I was able to power through. I’m so glad I did, because while all of the story was compelling, that last third or so of the book was phenomenal. It’s been a while since a book kept me up into the early morning hours, but I couldn’t sleep until I knew how things resolved. There were two scenes in particular—one at a funeral and the other serving as the closing scene of this installment—that I found incredibly powerful and evocative and moving. Both scenes brought me to tears.

If you’re a romantasy fan, especially one looking for clean stories amid the abundance of spicier offerings in the genre, you’re going to love the Flameheart Chronicles. These are young adult books that can actually be read by young adults, as well as enjoyed by the adults who love the genre. The romance is stellar, the worldbuilding lush, and the plot propulsive. I’m eager to see how the story ends in the final installment.

I am writing this review after reading an advanced copy from the authors. This review is honest and voluntary, and there is no financial or other gain from writing this.

I am absolutely speechless. Authors Bequette have given us a mind bending, emotion manipulating, absolute frolic of a story in this sequel to Flameheart. I didn't think they could top Flameheart but they did. Ashfall opens up soon after the events of Flameheart and drops us right in the middle of the action. Kayce, Aurelia, and their family and friends literally travel interdimensionally to find the pieces of an artifact that could make or break the cosmos and world as they know it. It is such an emotional rollercoaster that there were a few times I had to pause before continuing. But with everything we see our characters growing so much. Just like the first book, this one deals with some heavy stuff. Aurelia is still grieving her loss from the first book, and Kayce has multiple experiences that leave him broken and grasping for peace and security. The Weatherstone family has hijinks and shenanigans, but also their serious bonding moments as a family. I will say that this book actually made me cry, which is rare for me. For that I give an extra star because they made me love a character so much. If you read Flameheart, you absolutely want to pick this book up. This is perfect for fans of clean romance, high energy action, absolutely insane and scary villains, strong families, and big secrets. I will be perfectly honest and say I am looking forward to and anticipating the sequel while also bracing myself for the next big thing the authors have in store.

- 3rd Person, Dual POV
- YA Fantasy
- Kisses Only romance
- Series: Book 2, The Flameheart Chronicles

Ashfall was the perfect next installment for the Flameheart Chronicles. I listened to the audiobook for book 1 (Flameheart) first, and was beyond excited to start this one when I was finished.

This story has so much going for it; a fun & intriguing plot, relatable & lovable characters, lots of fantastic fantasy action that will keep you on your toes, beautiful writing with vivid imagery, descriptions, and some fantastic metaphors. There are sweet moments, laugh out loud moments, a bit of heartache, but also so much hope, love, honor, selflessness, and perfect sibling banter!

Life isn't always easy for these characters. They face perils, temptations, fears, and more. But I do not regret a single moment of this read. If the awesome cover and heartwarming dedication didn't already convince you to start this series, then I hope these words can help you make the choice to do so. It starts off really promising and then just keeps getting better and better.

Now here are some random end thoughts...

1. Loved the dual POVs we got this time
2. Loch's weapon of choice was the absolute best!
3. Kayce, listen to your wise older brother and keep doing 'the thing'!
4. Can I move to the Celestium Libris?
5. Where is this world of knights riding Frogs? I need to read that book.
6. The Earth contraband 😂
7. Love Aurelia's names for things
8. What was happening in San Francisco was literally my worst nightmare! No thank you, I'll remain in the Celestium Libris please.

Now you may be curious about some of that, which means it's time to stop what you're doing and read this book!

I received an advanced review copy of this book.

I am feeling a mixture of emotions. Ashfall has been the book I have been anticipating the most this year, and it blew me away!!! The way the story picks up so beautifully from Flameheart, and intertwines so seamlessly. It is beautiful writing! Ashfall is book 2 of the Flameheart Chronicles, for as y’all may have seen, I am absolutely in love with!!!

The way the Debequette’s continue to grow the world of Norenth with even more detail and depth is astounding! Seeing the growth of every single character, and their inner turmoil is one of the many aspects that keeps me hooked. It is not often I come across a book where I feel truly seen and understood through a character. But that is what Aurelia is, and seeing her grow and face new challenges with fierceness and tenacity, even when she’s scared, is inspiring! I may live in fantasy, especially in my head, but Ashfall truly brings realism with the struggles we sometimes have to face. The weight that makes us human. And it reminds me of how important it is to surround yourself with people that will stand in the fire with you and will always have your back. It is why this is one of my favorite Bible verses; “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

This book made me laugh, be in awe, kick my feet and giggle, cry, and ponder about my own life. And I am so excited (and scared 😅, in a good way) to see where the story goes.

If you haven’t yet, please read Flameheart. Trust me when I say, you will love this story!! These are just my own thoughts.

Out of the pages he came, into the pages she went.

This portal fantasy has it all: epic quest, found family, yearning.

Ashfall is book 2 of the Flameheart series and has even more of an epic fantasy feel than Flameheart (book one) did. The overall plot continues: Flamehearts are protectors of the written word and can travel in and out of stories using portals made by magical pens. The real world, and in fact, all the imagine worlds are being threatened by an evil that is literally tearing holes in all the stories and letting monsters run rampant. Aurelia and her book boyfriend Kasey must defeat the evil and restore order— but it might just tear them apart. In book 2, we are introduced to another villain, the Hunter, who is even more vile than anyone we’ve met before.

Through various encounters with the Hunter, Aurelia and Kasey face more than just physical danger— leading to some heartrending exploration of anxiety and PTSD. I thought these were especially profound and added a lot of depth, especially for a YA fantasy.

This book will keep you on pins and needles from start to finish. The characters experience so many unknowns— not just will they survive, but what will things be like when they do?

I am so honored to have been a part of the street team for Ashfall! As a mom of teens, I’m so incredibly thankful for Dalton and Emily‘s dedication to writing spice free YA content in a time when it’s so hard to find books for my readers needs. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the next installment in this series!

I rated this book at 4.5/5 stars.

First, thank you to Dalton and Emily Bequette as well as Quill & Flame Publishing for providing me with a digital ARC of this book. Ireceived an early copy from the authors/publisher but my review is voluntary. This book has a current release date of 7/14/2026.

This book continues the story of Aurelia Corvine and her best friend Kacerion (Kayce) Weatherstone. The fate of the worlds hangs in the balance. This book is a little bit darker than Flameheart but is beautifully and respectfully written. This book does deal heavily with grief and the horrible lies that depression and anxiety can whisper in our minds. We get to delve deeper into the Emperium and learn more about how the worlds were created and the lore of the Flamehearts. We also see more of the Devourer and his plans for the future. Long buried secrets are revealed and relationships are tested.

I found myself smiling at times watching Aurelia and Kayce blossoming into the adults they will be. I also had moments of sobbing and grieving with our characters as the story progressed. Have your tissues handy if you happen to also be one who cries over books. These books are perfect for anyone who ever wanted to see their favorite characters spring to life and to be able to interact in their worlds.

I truly loved this book and am very much looking forward to seeing where this series may lead in the future.

The second installment of the Flameheart chronicles in no way disappointed. We see great character development across multiple characters. But of course, our main two Auriela and Kayce.

Terranths banter will have you eye rolling *in the best way* .

Kayce & Aurielas romance will have you swooning and getting butterflies of your own at thier tenderness. And also yelling about time!

You will empathize with characters you may have thought to dislike. Because just as in life everyone has a back story that has made them who they are. You will cry out of some heartbreak but also understanding.

For those who enjoy biblical symbolism you will find it woven beautifully through its pages in a way that never preaches at you but fills you with hope and understanding.

I highlighted quite a few in this book which normally I don't do, but here are my favorites that stood out to me.The most.

"Where two lanterns gathered, light pierced the shadows"

" The qualified are not always called to lead. Those called to lead will be qualified"

The Bequettes did a phenomenal job eliciting every emotion from you in this second book.  I was honored to be a part of their street team and receive an advanced reader copy of this book. But I leave this review of my own accord, because it deserves every word i've written. I look forward to what this couple writes next. I will impatiently wait for book 3 with the full understanding that it will be a bit.

5/5🌟

Emotional. Powerful. An epically wonderful YA fantasy with a sweet romance taking root. It’s beautiful.
This book shows you non-toxic masculinity and strong femininity. It shows you amazing family dynamics at work. Parents and children; siblings; friends that are family; new friends that you want to trust but you just aren’t sure. It shows that it’s okay to not know how to heal as long as you know who to go to for help.
Sometimes second books in series get a bad rap because they are just the road to the final book. That is not the case here. This is a powerful story with a lot of feels and it is setting us up for an incredible finale!
I’m telling you…the gasps that I gusped. Thank you to the authors for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book. I love it. I loved the first one; and I cannot wait for the next one!! This is a YA fantasy with kisses only. No spice. Lots of yearning in this budding romance!

Some quotes that I love:

“Real,” she reassured Kayce. Herself. “This is real.”

Since she was a child, she’d broken herself to be everything for everyone. She’d realized lately—thanks to Kayce, his family—that the broken pieces she offered could only cut them.

Maybe there was more to history than what was told.

What I feel for you cannot be contained to a story.

‘knowledge and readiness robs fear of its power.’”

“To be a younger sibling is often to live in shadow.”
