They Knew Why

Redemption has a body count.

FBI Special Agent Jane Silver thought her career was finished. One huge failed operation has banished her to the conference rooms on Capitol Hill - shuffling papers, attending briefings, and watching her reputation quietly unravel. Then a lifeline arrives in the form of a murder.

In the affluent Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C., someone has killed one of the city's elite. And for the first time in months, Jane is back in the field doing what she does best - solving crimes.

The crime scene is gruesome. The evidence is damning. The suspect is obvious...almost too obvious.

When that suspect turns up dead too, before Jane can close the case, the investigation fractures into something far more intriguing. Jane, along with Metro PD's charming, confident Detective Mitch Jones, must untangle a web of clues where every answer leads to two more questions, every lead evaporates into the shadows, and every person of interest is dead and has something to hide.

Nothing is what it appears. And somewhere buried in the past, lies a secret powerful enough to kill for - again and again.

Can she catch a killer who always seems to be one step ahead? Or will the truth of what connects these deaths finally chain her to that desk - this time for good?

Interesting premise, but poorly executed. Odd punctuation and writing are distracting at times. For example, [She was] "peeking through the shades each time, hoping Mary to see standing in the driveway." It makes me wonder, was there no editor? Was there some glitch in the ebook? The mystery (of the plot, not the editing) is solved 2/3 the way through the book, but it kept going and going into motive and fallout, which I skimmed and eventually abandoned.
