Celeste escaped captivity with nothing but stolen clothes, a power she doesn't understand—and blood still fresh on her hands.
She's the only one who made it out.
Now she's alone. The bounty hunters tracking her were trained for this, and won't stop until she's back in chains. With nowhere else to turn, she disappears into the forest.
She didn't expect to find him. Or to need him.
Artemis lives alone for a reason. Quiet. Capable. More dangerous than he lets on. He knows the wilds, but it's the way he moves through them that sets him apart—like he's been hunted before and lived.
Under his reluctant guidance, Celeste begins to uncover the truth of what she is while glimpsing a power in Artemis that was never meant to be known.
What begins as necessity becomes something harder to ignore-something neither planned, and neither can let go.
People like them aren't meant to live freely.
Those with power are hunted, taken, or erased.
And now that she's been seen, running won't save her.
As the hunt closes in, Celeste must decide—keep running or turn back and fight for the ones she left behind.
This book was really well written with a true slow burn. The FMC, Celeste was a strong, determined woman with a real sense of right and wrong. Art was very likeable and brave, who carried some deep scars from his past. The elemental magic system was described so well I could easily imagine it being welded. The haunting and dark woods they travelled through were full of danger but Art was there to support Celeste through it all. But that cliffhanger!!! I cannot wait to read the next instalment!! Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team, I look forward to reading more from you!
Well written book, very detailed when it comes to the fight scenes and love the magic system. It is a very very slow burn, hopefully picks up just a little in the next book. Would have liked a little more background about Art, assuming there will be answers as the series goes on. Overall, really enjoyed this and looking forward to the next one!
This book completely pulled me in from the first page and didn’t let go. Celeste is such a raw, intense main character. She’s not polished or perfect, she’s surviving, messy, powerful, and trying to make sense of something terrifying inside her. The fact that she escaped captivity already covered in blood sets the tone immediately, and it never really lets you breathe in the best way.
The world feels dangerous in a very real, constant way. You can feel the pressure of the hunt closing in on her the entire time, and it makes every decision she makes feel heavier. Watching her slowly start to understand her power while also fighting just to stay free was so gripping.
And Artemis?? Easily one of the best parts of the book. He’s quiet, guarded, and clearly carrying his own past, but there’s this underlying edge to him that makes you question just how dangerous he really is. The way he moves through the world and the hints about what he can do are so intriguing. He’s not overly soft or instantly trusting, which makes their dynamic feel real.
The tension between Celeste and Artemis is so well done. It’s not rushed, it builds slowly through necessity, distrust, and those small moments where they start to rely on each other without meaning to. Every interaction feels charged, like something could snap or spark at any second. It’s that perfect mix of emotional tension and underlying attraction that keeps you hooked.
What I loved most is that this isn’t just about running, it’s about choice. About who you become after surviving something horrible. By the end, you really feel that shift in Celeste, and it makes everything hit even harder.
If you love high stakes fantasy with morally gray characters, slow burn tension, and a relationship that builds under pressure, this one absolutely delivers.
Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to receive this ARC. I throughly enjoyed this and can’t wait for the rest of the series.
So this book was good. The prose was beautiful, the scenes were emotional at times and hit home in the subtlest of ways. It is a true slow burn and I LOVE that, so many debut authors categorize that as one of their tropes, but most times it goes from zero to one hundred too fast- almost insta-love per se.
I gave the book four stars instead of five because it was a little slow for me. I wasn’t devouring it like I had hoped, so it took me a little longer than I liked to finish it. With that being said, it gives major epic fantasy vibes and is slow deliberately (if I assume correctly), especially with it being a series.
The magic system is cool AF, seeing I myself am a major ATLA fan.
My main gripe outside of pacing, too though is information. We aren’t given any solid details about Art and while mystery is good, I’d like a lil something something to keep my attention grabbed. Im barely hanging on with the breadcrumbs that are given in regards to Art’s backstory and that’s a major turnoff for me. Usually there’s a little more sustenance- even for those mysterious rugged characters we all know and love.
With all this to say, I WILL be reading the next installment and am super grateful for being chosen as an ARC reader! Keep up the lyricism, but sprinkle a tad more juicy facts in there to help us deepen and understand these well-crafted characters.
P.S. Why did Art even help her in the first place? Was it because she is an Ardor caster, mirroring the person we know nothing about? Like this is the main question that drives the whole relationship from the get-go, but I know absolutely nothing in regards to why he even said “yes”. Correct me if I’m wrong. 😂 Okay, I’m done now. Will be happily waiting for Book #2! 🙌😌
This book will take you on an adventure through the forests and old towns of AurenVale, with celeste and artemis who are trying to get ahead and hide from those who want to chain them because of the power they weild. Celeste doesnt understand her own powers, and art becomes her trainer as they traverse the land and battle for what ever safety that they can find. There is a unique magically system based in medieval times, that has a strong poverty/conscription bases between the towns they visit.
I love how he doesnt try to just be her knight but instead teaches her how to be her own knight safely. Also its very irritating (in a good writers way) that you left us hanging on what his secret was. Celeste has so much strength and grit and tries so hard to hold her own against enimies, never backing down. They both have walls that they respect while also unknowingly breaking them down piece by peice.
I also like how it although at times there were moments , it wasnt really a romantasy and it focused more on the adventure side. Teaching, giving context to the world, history, survival and building trust in each other come first. They will have a strong relationship base if the next book edges that way. Their easy banter from the get go and the slow burn energy they give off really makes you root for them. If only they can scale each others walls first.
And i hope nettles makes an appearance in the next book, definitely a favourite side character.
Favourite line "Every scar she carries is because of men like you. Youve had your share of her pain." I raised my blade. " now you'll have mine".❤️
Thank you to the author for providing an early copy of this book. This is my honest review.
This story had me in an absolute chokehold from the beginning. Amazing story, world building, and characters!
Set in a world with elemental magic, the story follows Celeste as she escapes captivity while being relentlessly hunted because of how valuable her abilities are. We meet her exhausted, desperate, and in trouble. That’s when Art helps her escape from her pursuers and quickly becomes an important part of her journey. Recognizing his skill, Celeste asks him to train her, and from there the story takes off.
The writing is beautiful while still feeling accessible, which made it incredibly easy to fall into the story and connect with the characters. The author balances worldbuilding and character backstory naturally. I never felt overwhelmed with information about the world and its history.
The plot is plotting. This book is packed with action, battles, and high-stake moments that steadily build tension throughout the story. The battle scenes are intricate, engaging, and a great way to explore the magic system.
What really stood out to me, though, were the characters. They’re all carrying their own demons, fears, and emotional wounds, which makes their development feel authentic and compelling. I especially loved watching their relationship evolve and strengthen over time. There is romance woven into the story, but it never overpowers the main narrative; it complements the emotional journey, instead.
Overall, an immersive and emotionally engaging fantasy with strong character work, exciting action, and a magic system that kept me fully invested.
Maybe 2.5⭐️. This was a fast-paced, action-packed story of a girl on the run and her unlikely protector. The magic was well constructed, the training montage written in an engaging way, the confrontations dramatic and tense. The world building was limited but clear. The FMC has escaped from an illegal slave trade of mages kept trained only to the degree of usefulness, not enough to escape. She is being chased down due to her rare combination of powers. She encounters an overpowered, mysterious man with a good moral compass, when he protects her in the woods from her pursuers. They then travel together, him beginning her formal training and helping her avoid detection. Even in his perspective we learn very little about him, his age is undetermined, his powers are seemingly endless, there are some hints he is not human but nothing is confirmed... She, on the other hand, spills her life story as full honesty is necessary for her education...?
I didn't like the romance, it felt very forced. She is on the run, he is a lot older than her and tells her nothing of himself, they don't do much bonding outside of travelling together. Then they spend three nights in a row drinking to stupidity, her for the first time, and she kisses him one night, is pushed back, then she attempts to make him jealous the next? It's unprovoked and unnecessary... They could be friends, even familial by then end of their journey...
It had action, it had a plot, but the world building, character development and relationships left a lot to be desired.
The Hallow follows a young girl Celeste who escapes from slavery and is rescued from recapture by the mysterious and powerful Artemis. In a world where Casters (those who can wield powers like Fire, Wind, Water and Fire) are highly sought after to be conscripted into war, those with unique powers like Celeste are often captured and forced into slavery. Celeste, while grateful to Artemis for rescuing her, is determined to learn how to strengthen her powers in order to go back and save her friend who remained behind.
The start was immediately engaging, and fast-paced however the first half of the book seemed to almost rush through the background information which left me a little confused as to the main plot. It also made it difficult to connect with Celeste’s determination to rescue her friend because there was very little about her. The book itself is quite short, and it felt like there was room to add more to the first half to better engage the reader in the story.
The writing style was engaging and descriptive, and enjoyable to read. Overall I enjoyed the story and thought the magical system was unique and interesting.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, and I am interested to read the next book in the series. I feel like this book is a good background start that sets up what could be a great series.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy of this book to review!
I’m not even kidding… The Hallow had me wishing I could just ignore real life for a day and binge it straight through.
From the very start, it pulls you in and doesn’t slow down. The whole caster vs non-caster world is so interesting, and the magic system?? It has that elemental feel we all love, but there’s something darker and more intense about it that makes it stand out.
Celeste is one of those FMCs you can’t help but root for. She’s been through so much, but she’s still fighting, still pushing forward, even when everything is stacked against her. Watching her stay one step ahead while being hunted the entire time kept me on edge.
And then Artemis shows up… Quiet, mysterious, clearly hiding something… but the way he steps in without hesitation? Yeah, I was sold immediately. There’s just something about a man who says very little but handles everything when it counts.
Their connection is definitely a slow burn, but it works so well. It’s not rushed, it builds through survival, trust, and tension, which made it even better in my opinion.
Between the constant action, the emotional moments, and the mystery surrounding everything (especially Artemis), I genuinely didn’t want it to end.
This is one of those books where you finish it and immediately start thinking about the next one because you KNOW it’s going to get even better.
Thank you to the author for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. The Hallow was a dark, atmospheric read that pulled me in with its eerie tone, emotional intensity, and lingering sense of mystery. S.A. Perchez delivers a story that feels unsettling in the best way, where nothing is quite as it seems and every revelation carries weight.
The atmosphere was easily one of the strongest aspects of this book. There’s a constant undercurrent of tension that makes the world feel fragile and dangerous, like something is always just out of sight. That sense of unease made it incredibly compelling to read, especially as the story slowly peeled back its layers. 🖤
The characters added a lot of emotional depth to the story as well. Flawed, guarded, and carrying their own burdens, they felt very human despite the darker fantasy elements surrounding them. The relationships were charged with emotion and mistrust, which made every interaction feel meaningful and unpredictable.
I’m giving this four stars because while I loved the tone and concept, there were moments where I wanted a bit more clarity and expansion in certain plot threads. Still, the overall experience was immersive, gripping, and emotionally engaging.
If you enjoy dark fantasy, eerie atmospheres, emotional tension, and slow-burning mystery, The Hallow is a strong and compelling read worth diving into.
What a wonderful exploration through vulnerability and adventure. We make this journey through the wilderness alongside our two main characters Celeste and Artemis. Both of our adventures are blessed with gifts, elemental powers that label them as "Casters". Throughout the story, Art and Celeste learn to trust themselves and one another as they travel towards freedom. Freedom from shackles upon their memories and from the clutches of the Black Veil, a mysterious group searching for powerful Casters to enslave and utilize as they see fit.
Along the road, our adventurers being to explore the ideas of companionship and vulnerability; inquiring of eachother whilst respecting each other's boundaries. A partnership that begins out of necessity flourishes into a trusting relationship, with room to grow yet.
This slow-burn fantasy adventure has elements of magic (primary elements), a protective and thoughtful MMC, and a strong-willed and smart FMC. Set primarily in woodlands and surrounding villages, other notable influences are the soldiers of the Triarchy who also search for Casters and able bodies to go to war. The pace is even with time to explore settings and build a mature and complex relationship between our protagonists. I found this to be a cozy and comfortable read, with the stakes apparent enough to note but not build extreme reader tension.
PERFECT COMBINATION OF MAGIC, ADVENTURE & ROMANCE! 🫠✨
I learned so much about magic through this book! It was truly inspiring.... The knowledge in this book has depth. I can say the author thoroughly researched/thought out the content. 🤩
The teacher × student dynamic between the MCs is fascinating!! 😍 The romantic tension btwn them is unnerving 😋.... They know what they feel for each other but it's kinda forbidden from Artemis' side.
The mention of traumas & captive state It's so remarkable, truly felt alive... Like it's taking place right in front of me! 🥺
Embarked on a Journey to the Rodin, the main characters face challenges with they solve with ease & gain experience & become stronger each passing town also the banter throughout their journey is 10/10. I could read this all day long! 😂
The writing is exquisite & slow paced giving every subtle details about surrounding making the story vivid in my head! I loved reading Artemis & Celeste's POV viewing story from both perspective & giggling over their unsaid confessions. 🥰
Waiting for book 2!! Need to know what Artemis is hiding & why he keeps mentioning that he's older than Celeste. Also need to know more about this Nettle (squirrel familiar).
Thankyou for giving me this beautiful ARC to read!! 🤩🫶
RECEIVED ADVANCED READER COPY. The Hallow feels like one of those fantasy debuts that pulls you in immediately and doesn’t let you come up for air. It has got your attention right from the beginning, especially with Celeste constantly on the run and trying to understand her own power. The magic system is a standout, always nice to read something unique.
What really stands out though is the relationship dynamic! I can not wait for you to experience Art and Celeste. This is very much a slow burn built on trust, not lust, and I love that it takes its time. Celeste is strong but realistically worn down by everything she’s been through, while Artemis has that quiet, dangerous, “who even ARE you?” energy that keeps the tension high.
Overall, this definitely reads like a character-driven fantasy with action, emotional weight, and just enough mystery to keep you hooked into the next book. If you like slow burn tension, layered characters, and a story that balances quiet moments with high-stakes survival, this seems like one to have on your radar. Just be prepared to finish it and immediately need the sequel. YA
I received an ARC of The Hallow and here’s what I thought.
Let’s start off by saying this is a more fantasy based book, less focused on the romance and more on character development.
Celeste and Artemis are not invincible characters. There are more humanized than I’m used to reading about in a fantasy novel and with that I can say it was refreshing. We’re in the beginning of their journey, so the story is told as she gains more confidence in her abilities. They definitely go through some instances where they are injured and extremely exhausted and I think it makes the story all the better because it adds some depth.
This is a true slow burn. The characters do not automatically fall in love with each other. They’re starting to grow on each other as they learn more about each other during this difficult time of survival.
The slow build of their relationship is endearing, reminds me of adolescence in the way that it’s a more about how they are navigating these new feelings. It’s an innocent relationship that I’ve grown to appreciate.
Overall I think this book was a great palette cleanser!
It lets you just read and enjoy the world.
Also small shoutout to nettles!!!

Thank you to the author for giving me an ARC & letting me part of this world.
The Hallow wasn't what I expected. Yes I knew what it was about & what I was getting myself into but I didn't know how deep it would be. Both MCs ,Celeste & Artemis went through similar struggles but how they lived their struggles was different & unique. Celeste lost so much of her family & it just kept getting worse. Art we know he went through a lot but details are vague. Art was such an amazing teacher for Celeste & at first it was just to survive but seeing them slowly form a bond was just inspirational. It's very slow-burn but I don't mind because they both went through so much , so can you blame them for still having their walls up? The magic system in this is simple but unique & I really adored learning about it & seeing Celeste get stronger & be in more control of her magic as the book went on. Not all books end on a good note, but it did end with hope & in the end the right choice was made by Celeste. What led to the cliffhanger I didn't expect to happen at all. It was a surprise curve ball & I'm excited to see how it is continued in the next book.
I am a sucker for a slow-burn love story, especially when the characters have incredible banter and chemistry. Love story aside, this fantasy has it all:
- A world torn apart by war - A very in-depth magic system, of which it feels like we’re barely scratching the surface in this first installment - Lost histories and no explanation as to why people are starting to get powers (think midichlorians from Star Wars) - “Good guys” are also the “bad guys,” specifically in reference to Soldiers - Incredibly detailed fight scenes, where you’re completely immersed in the magical choreography of it all - Trying to beat the odds when everything is stacked against you
Then all the bonuses of Celeste and Art’s dynamic relationship…
- He saves her but really it feels like she’s also saving him - Touch her a die - Witty banter - His notebook, IYKYK - Their incredible journey to trust one another:
“Trust doesn’t mean trading scars, Celeste. It means I keep mine buried so you don’t have to carry them.”
I look forward to book 2. I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but my opinions are my own. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy a light fantasy with a SLOW-BURN love story.
I have to say this book was slow to grab my attention, but at around 25% it got ahold of me and I finished the rest in a couple of hours! The magic system is pretty unique, and I see a lot of people comparing it to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I actually thought it was quite different and more complex. This is just the first book, so we've only dipped our toes into how all of the magic works and also only gotten a taste of the political situation as well. I really want to see how the war plays into the story as a whole since we've gotten bits and pieces of how it's affecting the world. The action in this book was very well written and I felt like it was a movie playing in my head. Artemis, our MMC, is strong, protective, and mysterious. Our FMC, Celeste, is strong willed, determined, and full of potential. Their slow burn feels like such a natural progression throughout the story, I can't wait to see how it continues in the next book. The cliffhanger at the end of this book should be ILLEGAL. I went to turn the page and there was the 'About the Author' section and I almost screamed.
I love when magical beings get a fun designation. I love the term Caster. It made this book that much cooler, and it was already cool to begin with. The world building in this book is insane. I feel like I could touch the trees and buildings and animals with how great the descriptions were in this book. I also loved discovering Art and Celeste. These two characters are incredible and have so much depth to them. I feel like I know their souls, and yet there is still so much more to learn about them. The give and take between the two is so pure. They're both fiercely protective and it makes you want to smack them and say "you two are meant for each other, what are you doing." It's a slow burn so slow it is KILLING me. I need them to see what I see. Hopefully we get that in the second book. I also really enjoyed the action scenes. They're so well written that you can picture the entire battle each time. The elemental usage is amazing and even if the powers repeat in the next battle, I don't feel like it's too repetitive. Same power, different usage, it's brilliant. I can't wait to see what happens next.
The Hallow is a fast-paced fantasy read filled with rich details, admirable MCs, a unique elemental magic system, and high stakes action.
Celeste escapes captivity into the forest and is saved by the mysterious Artemis, a wanderer with powers beyond Celeste's imagination. After he rescues her, Artemis agrees to train Celeste and help her control her own powerful gifts. Celeste confides in Artemis about her family and home, her captivity, and her desire for revenge. While Artemis shares some aspects of his life, he has his secrets. He feels protective of Celeste, and she is determined to learn all she can from him.
The forest isn't safe for the travelers, and they encounter dangerous foe... Can Artemis and Celeste trust each other and work together? Will Celeste learn to trust in herself?
S. A. Perchez has created the start of what is sure to be a wildly entertaining dark fantasy series! With wonderfully vivid descriptions, dynamic characters, and intricately interesting magic, The Hallow was a captivating story that kept me hooked from beginning to end. I am excited to find out what will happen next!
Such an easy 5 star read and one of my favourite of the year! This book had its claws in me from page 1 with an extremely gripping introduction to this dark world with high stakes.
The description of the elemental magic and how its welded was incredibly strong and could create a vivid image of how it looked in action. Was very impressed!
This is a true slow burn and far more focused on the dark fantasy aspect rather than romance but in a good way! Our characters chemistry from forced allies to genuinely caring for each other felt so real and raw.
Celeste is one of those FMC with such a gentle strength about them that I adore. That pure determination to grow and protect those they love is one of my favourite and Art is such a perfect badass but utter softie!! I love these two and so excited to see whats in store. They gave me book Peeta and Katniss vibes with their banter and wit!
The ending has left me wanting more and we still dont know the secret which has left me spiraling haha.
Thankyou for the opportunity to ARC read this novel. Im so excited for what's to come!!
If I didnt have to be an adult, I would have gotten through this book in a day! I really enjoyed the story line. This is a world based with casters and non casters. Celeste, our Fmc, is just a badass on her own. She is captured for her casting abilities, has endured so much and escapes with nothing but the clothes on her back. But she is to valuable for her captures to just let her go. As bounty hunters catch up to her, she is doing what she can to stay out of their reach. This is where we meet out MMC, Artemis / Art. He is a wanderer, trying to stay unseen by all unless necessary. Keeping himself away from trouble is the best way to keep his secrets. But when he see Celeste being chased by the bounty hunters and witnesses what her abilities are, he cant just let them take her. And I mean come on who doesn't like a man who would kill for you without even knowing you lol! This is definitely a slow burn, YA Series❤️
3.5 ⭐️ — This book was pretty good! Those who know me know that I am very picky with romantasy, so my rating may reflect that. However, I will say the world-building is pretty darn solid, and I love how unique the magic is that exists in this world. The way the author describes it is so detailed and very easy to understand. Easily imaginable. In my head I kinda saw the fight scenes very similar to the fighting scenes in the Avatar the last air binder.
It starts off strong and very attention-grabbing. The romance between Art and Celeste is a SLOW BURN, but the tension is so palpable you could cut it. I will say though that I feel the book is a bit more about the magic and world and the romance takes a bit of the backseat (this is the first book so it may be an introductory book? Not sure) I don’t mind it at all because it was well written.
I really enjoyed The Hallow overall, especially the magic system, which felt unique and immersive throughout the story.
The writing style was incredibly bingeable and kept me turning the pages even when the pacing felt chaotic at the start, the author did a great job of making it feel like a net was closing in on Celeste & Artemis which kept me hooked.
I did feel like too much was held back when it came to Artemis. There were so many hints about his past and the secrets he was keeping, but I wanted much more depth and background to fully connect with his character and I would of liked to see further development of the relationship between Celeste & Artemis.
The Ending also felt incomplete in terms of the overall story, leaving me with too many questions than answers and I think some (not all) should of been resolved.
Despite that, I was still really invested and enjoyed the journey, particularly the worldbuilding and magic elements.
Thank you to S A Perchez for offering this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I absolutely loved this. It was simple yet kept me so engaged. The quiet moments were as big and important as the battle scenes. And somehow I didn’t become frustrated when I reached the end of the book and realized I don’t know what the plot is, and it’s not a bad thing!
The author spent so much of his time laying out the world and magic for us and giving a chance to learn the characters that it was enough. The end came and the plot was just really getting going which leads me to believe the next book is going to hit the ground running!
Lastly, I love Celeste and Art. They compliment each other so well and their banter is FANTASTIC. Oh and this man can write a slow burn with tension that will leave you kicking your feet. I want and can’t wait for so much more out of this relationship.
I received this as a capital ARC copy and truly enjoyed it. This book hooked me right away and kept the pace moving from the very beginning. The magic system gave me Last Airbender vibes with the elemental pillars, but it still felt unique because of the unnatural magic and the way the powers were woven into the story. With Celeste constantly on the run, the action stayed exciting and made it hard to put down.
The relationship between Celeste and Artemis holds TENSION! Their bond builds through trust and survival, but Artemis has so much mystery around him, and that made me want to keep reading to figure out what he was hiding. I mean, a guy who come out of nowhere to save her and takes down anything in his path?? Yes pls!!! This series is going to be really great and I can’t wait until the next book.
Interesting characters, quieter and gentle in how they interact with each other and the world but each with an inner strength forged from hardship. Well written fight scenes that made great use of the unique magic system. Clarity and pacing were really good throughout.
There was a sort of gentle slow burn attraction present in this book without any spice. More of a romance in the sense of two people becoming gradually more important to each other than a constant lusting for one another.
Some cozy elements in the amicable way the main characters treat each other and appearances by a random mischievous squirrel.
Enough moments of tension and fear for the characters to keep you racing along but interspersed with quiet moments. The entire book felt like a rewarding read and made me want to know what happens next. Will definitely read the next book in the series.
If you like unique magic, strong FMCs and a really slow slow burn then please read this.
This book sucks you in right from the starts. I could not put this down. I loved both MCs. Celeste wasn’t some pushover MC. She knew what she wanted and worked her but off to achieve it. I also hope we learn more about what she went through in book 2.
Art was so mysterious and I really hope we will learn more about him and his past in book 2. I loved that he was willing to help Celeste learn her casting and he didn’t just leave her the first chance he got.
I NEED book 2 already!!! This one ended on a cliffhanger and now I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do lol 😭😭 Definitely add this one to your TBR list NOW!! 🫶🏻💕
This book really grabbed me from page one. It starts with intense action (running from pursuers, magical fighting scenes? yes, please). The story is told in Dual POV and the main characters, Celeste & Art are very likeable (mature, earnest, dynamic).
Although there is a lovely (true) slow-burn romance subplot, the story centers much more on the themes of survival and trust. The main characters, both carrying immense power, face a world that is posed against them.
The book is a strong introduction to the series, laying a solid foundation through immersive world building and a clear understanding of the magic system. I am invested in these characters, their world, and this is definitely a series I plan to continue. Fantastic debut!
Fantastic start to what I can feel is going to be a great series!! The author does a fantastic job world building without it being too much. Art and Celeste are great characters that I can’t wait to learn more about. Art especially has my attention, and the author has done a great job giving you JUST enough information about him to make you go “Hmmmm what exactly is he?”. I like the magic system and how each casters deciding power is based off a certain event that triggers it. The break down of the emotions is interesting. I’m also very invested in political plot that is slowly revealing itself in the background. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the series and adding this book to my physical copy shelf.
This book was SO GOOD. It hooks you from the very beginning and just never stops. Its super action packed and the tension between these two characters, THE SLOW BURN, their both so traumatized they don't know how to act.
And holy cow Artemis the MAN that you are. This man has so much mystery to unfold about him still I just know this is gonna be an amazing series. I mean the man literally killed like 20 people for her. And then still sacrificed himself for her goals. But of course the book ends with her going after him.
I have no idea if this will be a YA series or not and I don't even care. Loved it.
