This morning my brother Jason was supposed to pick me up for work. He even honked his car horn to let me know he was waiting. But by the time I got outside, he was barely alive, lying in a pool of blood in my driveway.
First I was frantic and horrified as I tried to help him and call for the ambulance.
Then I was in shock as I waited in the emergency room.
When the news came that he was dead - I was filled with rage. So was the berserker that I have spent my entire life keeping contained behind impenetrable walls in my mind. It was pounding, pounding, pounding against its cage, trying to get free.
It wants vengeance. So do I.
I have a message for the person who killed my brother.... We are coming for you.
TheSevered Thread is the first installment in The Abigail Lassiter urban fantasy series.
Dione has always been an avid reader, and her love of fantasy started when she first read Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" in the 4th grade. At some point, her obsession with reading transformed into a driving need to write down all of the crazy daydreams that played out in her mind. She and her family live in Eastern Pennsylvania with their two frogs, one unnamed goldfish and Gracie - the most fabulous little dog ever.
I am going to write a quick and careful review, because avoiding spoilers will be like trying to flat out run through a minefield while blindfolded and higher than a kite.
The Severed Thread is written with the kind of intelligent narrative that I'm not used to reading anymore; I actually had to look up a word, heh. From the first chapter Abigail's shock and grief was made so real to me. She hardly gets a chance to mourn, though, as she is immediately involved with the shady people her brother dealt with, and who may or may not have killed him. Thankfully, Abigail has intelligent and strong friends who play an important part in helping her survive the mess Abigail's brother's death has gotten her into.
There were no stereotypes, which was a relief. One of Abigail's close friends, Corbin, is an (alpha?) homosexual werewolf who works as a lawyer, and thankfully doesn't sound like a valley girl. There were all sorts of supernatural species in this novel, including vampires, weres of different kinds, shifters, and elves. While that added a few interesting twists, the characters did not seem defined by their species. I look forward to getting to know them better in the next installment.
For those wondering about romance: there really wasn't much, and it's really hard to tell where things might go at this point. I suspect it will be a slow development.
This book only cost me $3.00 on Amazon, and I read it in one sitting. During finals week!! If you love Urban Fantasy, pick this up, because you won't regret it.
Such a fun read with great characters and suspense that keeps you turning the pages long into the night! I love the premise that wolves, elves, and vampires exist alongside humans in a world that is otherwise pretty familiar. The story starts with a strong emotional pull, and the main character, Abigail, draws you in further: you want her to be ok, but you also want her to get revenge! The characters are complex with bits of good and bad, which keeps it from feeling overly fantastical - although many of the characters have supernatural qualities, they are also very human. The book is pretty PG, there are some hints of lust, some sad and slightly gory death, but I would say that it's fine for an older middle schooler. (If you are ok with the content of the first chapter, then the rest will be fine.) Ms. Suto's writing style is very casual and easy, making this book easy to devour. I can't wait for the next book!
2 stars because I actually finished it. The book was alright but nothing really happened in it. The only page turner in the book was you anticipating some epic fight scene or anything really but unfortunate there was nothing. The base story was actually good and interesting. But just failed in the end because it just didn't deliver.
Oh my god, this book was so great. It was remarkably unique, with wicked world-building, and a compelling plot. Abigail was an awesome character, whose story I can't wait to read more of. The ending will pretty much guarantee that you read on. I'm in book love, and am pretty sure anyone who reads this will be as well.
I really enjoyed this book and so look forward to more...I hope there will be lots more and I hope Dione Suto is a fast writer! The ending was a bit confusing but once I wrapped my head around it, I was thrilled with it. Certainly didn't see it coming and that is always a good thing.
Read this book about 3-4 years ago when it first came out and loved it. I eagerly awaited the next book but time has passed and I've lost hope. *sigh* But I would still recommend since the main mystery is completed then move on.
An OK first book, but where is #2? If I had realized this was the only one, I would not have bothered, really inconsiderate of the author and publisher to not give any reason, just leave their readers, who paid their money for #1, hanging. As soon as sexy vampires and werewolves appeared on the scene this book automatically lost a star, god, I hate alpha wolves and their pathetic followers and irresistible dead things.
The Severed Thread turned out to be an interesting and a bit different of a read. This UF has the usual cast of characters, vamps, shifters, elves and angels. Abigail Lassiter, our mc, is an elf that has a pretty nice low key life and she likes it that way. Her brother tends to be a black sheep and gets into minor trouble until that trouble became murder right on Abigail’s driveway. From there ensues a mystery of who killed her brother, and why. Quickly along the way Abigail gets embroiled in the darker underbelly of the world, mostly against her will. After you get through all of that the twist at the end changes everything again. Luckily we don’t end on a cliff hanger but there is a lot of story arc potential for the next book!
This is a character driven story and most of our characters are interesting; some are very good and that is very apparent right from the start, others are a little more grey area which leaves you wondering what they are going to do from one moment to the next. I count Liam amongst the grey area characters, while he played a sort of bad guy I’m not convinced he really is a bad guy, or not completely one anyway; He makes the story less predictable and more interesting. Our really bad guys live up to that bill very well and the bad guys are cookie cutter. Abigail was fairly likable and didn’t suffer much from the tstl syndrome that some female leads seem to get written with. I did think that one of the detectives behavior was a little over the top and could use some work. All and all I liked the portrayal of majority of the characters.
There is no romance at all in this book so if you’re looking for that you will not find it here, there is potential for some in the next book maybe. There is violence and some of it very graphic at the beginning, there is no sexual content at all, and there is drug culture as part of the story line even though our mc does not do drugs. Our mc is about 30 years old and most of the other sups are a lot older than that. The plot is mature and this is written for the NA and older crowd.
This was truley a great start to what will hopefully be an epic new UF series. I liked the characters and for once I didn't mind that the heroine wasen't kickass to start wit. However she was far from a damsel in disstress too so she was somwhere in between. I really think the uniqueness of the whole story and main heroine just completley had me hooked from page one.
I will admit I was a bit hesistant at first, but that was simply because I wasen't use to the way the author presented the story in the book. However I really came to enjoy this book it put it hooks in me with it's mystery and uniqueness. The book deserves 4,5 stars without a doubt. The only reason this dosen't get 5 stars is because I thought the author could have made the book longer the ending was a bit rushed and I did not like that. The things in the end happend way to fast for my taste. It felt like it was a struggle to finish the book while leaving it on a cliffhanger of sorts. But I must say I loved how the author painted this world with just the right amount of information and explenations as to what things meant and what the characters feelt. Nothing about this book was boring and I enjoyed it tremendously.
Thanks Dione C. Suto for a great book and I can't wait for the next one in the series already having withdrawl from this incredible story.
This book has a lot going for it. It is set in an interesting world, the main character is an elf (in my experience, there are not a lot of stories in this genre with elves as the main characters or character), and had a bit of mystery in the storyline. It makes a strong showing. Unfortunately, I had a hard time liking/respecting the main character. I find her entirely too passive bordering on uninteresting. I have hopes that the following books will diminish this though. I also felt like the book was overly wordy. There were instances where a page or several was spent on "informative" tangents that were overall pretty unimportant. I ended up skimming about 20-something percent in and only focusing on scenes that were interesting and had direct impact to the storyline in order to avoid the whole list of things I didn't care about.
Will I read book 2? Yes. However, if it has the same issues it's unlikely I will read a anything after that.
This was the first time reading this author and I was loving the description, the cover, and the sample so I was 1 click away from a new book. I loved Abigail. Her strength, loss, love, and perseverance throughout this book were amazing. She was a well rounded heroine and I loved it. The secondary characters were also well fleshed out and their own people. Now the storyline was completely interesting, something new, and had plenty of twists. Overall the story was well written with plenty of emotion. I really hope she is working on book three because I want book two to be out now.
I enjoyed this book however I did not like any of the interactions with the vampire. He forced her to do something illegal and then hurt her for lying yet she still helped him. I honestly wish she had let her berserker out to kick his ass. I understand why she didn't however at the end her Guardian stopped the vampire from hurting her but in her berserker state he wasn't a threat so why would he honestly think threatening her was a good idea now. End of the book ends up with her going with the vampire to some party! I think I'd just find a way to kill him.
I must say in this genre it's difficult to find an original story, especially one that includes some werewolves and vampires, but this author succeeded. While the physical and psychological descriptions of them are to be expected, the context of the storyline is not. The world building is gradual but satisfying. I like the main characters self-deprecating sense of humor and her friends are very interesting too. All in all page-turner I would recommend and I'm eager for next installment!
A great new series, even if it's her first book and the first book of the series. An elf: female, strong-willed, attractive, smart; the master of the local vampires and the head of the local werewolf pack. An unlikely trio put together in the same old way, but with some surprising new results. The fast-paced book doesn't give you a moment to breathe, even when she stops to meditate. And the end of the book is obviously just a pause while all the characters catch their breath and change their clothes for the second book. I can hardly wait to read it!
I echo the view that this is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. I can't believe it just came out because that means I'll have to wait who knows how long for the next one. Plenty of character development -- and although there are hints of future romantic interests, this focuses on the story and letting us get to know our main character. Thank you Dione Soto for not rushing into things. Keep up the good work -- I'm ready for the next one please!
Eh... It was a little slow and boring, and I figured out the "mystery" pretty easily. The end kinda frustrated me,
But it was well written and an interesting idea. I do think any subsequent books would be worth reading if Suto decides to make this a series. If you can pick it up cheap, give it a go. Maybe you'll like it more than I did.
This is one of the best books have read in a long time. An amazing story line combined with great characters. Vampires, werewolves, elfs, shape shifters and regular humans all included in this action packed book. I certainly hope this is the first book in a long series. Great job by a talented author.
When the book ended I was a bit upset. I did not want to stop reading I wanted to know more. I enjoyed the storyline immensely. There is a major twist at the end that had me a bit surprised. It ended not really in a cliff hanger but it left a lot unanswered. There is no way I am not reading the next book. I just hope it is out soon!!
Umm read better books but overall it was a decent book I would have liked more interaction with her monster ... when I read the summery of the book I only bought it because I was under the impression that she and her monster were working together but sadly that was not the case ... life
I liked the story. The characters are great. I'm only giving it three stars because the shifts in tense throughout the book threw me out of the story too many times as did some other grammar issues. These things distract me and detract from a story. I will probably read another book from the author because I did enjoy her characters. I just hope there's better editing in the next one.
WOW! Just wow! It has been so long since I've read a good Urban Fantasy book. Strong female heroine, great character development, great details that weaved an unique story. Those that like the Kate Daniels series should definitely read this. I only hope the next book in the series is equally as good. I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHEN THE NEXT BOOK IS BEING RELEASED!!!
I didn't know what to expect but a friend recommended this book and I'm glad she did - it was truly a fun and suspenseful book to read over spring break. When I wasn't reading I was thinking about the characters and plot twists in the back of my mind. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
This feels like a mediocre YA book written by a young adult. I always want to give a positive review but in this case I am giving a warning. Not a good read. This might entertain a preteen (but there is so much wonderful stuff out there) Better to skip it.
I was pleasantly surprised at what good book this turned out to be. I thought it was written extremely well and enjoyed the thrill ride of events. The end left it open for another book, so I am definitely looking forward to the next one.
This is a decent story of how things can get emotionally involved and turn a life towards the dangers of instability and deception could turn into bad things. Yet trust in real friends can help you through it.
Very easy read - enjoyed the characters and definitely looking forward to book 2! I love exploring new self-published authors...for the price this one is worth every penny.
I really enjoyed it! Keen to see what comes next... There are some very obvious grammatical errors, but if you can get passed that the book has a great story.
