A wedding fast approaching. The loss of a corporate sponsor. A series of grisly murders.
Oliver Berridge never expected to find himself back in school, but there he stands on Bishop Point University's campus, feeling even more out of place than the first time around. Meeting a young and sassy classmate helps him acclimate, and also ignites an idea to breathe new life into his paranormal blog as a paranormal video channel. And what better way to launch than by filming the opening of an ancient coffin shipped back from Egypt?
Things, however, don't go as planned. The team is sprayed by a mysterious substance and a scroll found alongside the mummy requires urgent translation. Before classes the very next day, Oliver is hauled into the Glenmont police station to answer questions about a gruesome murder. And then another.
With days until Oliver and Dave's wedding, the two race against the clock to prove his innocence, helped by Cody, Demetrius, and the rest of the Parson's Hollow gang. Oliver knows the murders are tied to the coffin opening, but he has no proof, and a Glenmont detective is determined to pin it all on him.
Hank Edwards (he/him) writes MM romance and MM paranormal fiction, blending supernatural suspense, humor, and heart across more than fifty novels and dozens of short stories. His series include the spooky-comic, GFY, best friends to lovers “Critter Catchers,” the historical horror romance “Venom Valley,” the suspenseful FBI/civilian “Up to Trouble” novels, and the small-town, contemporary warmth of “Williamsville Inn.” A Michigan native, Hank writes queer characters navigating extraordinary circumstances with biological and found family beside them on their journey to true love.
Ancient Obsession by Hank Edwards is a suspenseful mystery that blends archaeology, danger, and engaging characters into a fast-paced story. The plot kept me interested with its unexpected twists, and the historical elements added depth without slowing the action. Overall, it’s an entertaining read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys mystery and adventure
The focus of Ancient Obsession switches from the original Critter Catchers to Dave and Oliver. Dave is the brother of one of MC’s from the original series. Oliver is a former reporter turned blog owner. Both have been involved in cases from the original series. In this first book it is nearing Dave and Oliver’s wedding when Oliver becomes involved in opening an ancient sarcophagus. Of course that turns into a monster adventure. I was worried I would not enjoy the story as much as I did the books that focused on the previous couple but that proved to not be true. I enjoyed the relationship between Oliver and Dave. It was every bit as fun as Demi and Cody’s relationship. As an added bonus characters from the original series played a role. I highly recommend this book but suggest you read the two Critter Catchers series first.
This one was not for me. I love this little universe but I don’t care for Oliver (or Dave. Sorry Dave) and so an entire book centred around them was always going to be a bit of a struggle for me. But this one started slow and the “critter” just didn’t really draw me in. Being outside of their home town meant most of the usual cast of characters didn’t have as big of a role and this one suffered for it. We were also quite detached from events in a way we aren’t normally. Things happened around Oliver but not to him (even getting arrested didn’t really put him in this one, weirdly) at least until the very end.
I don’t know, maybe I just missed the earlier books but this one lacked a certain something.
So excited this series is continuing!! Oliver and Dave are getting married but there is one small issue of a mummy causing trouble! Love that the mummy is LGBTQ! I also enjoyed Lucia’s heavy sigh when she realizes they have gotten mixed up with another monster – she has come a long way! I appreciate that we still get Cody, Demi and Jugs. Started this book as soon as I received it and could not put it down. Now the wait begins for the next one! I’ll try to be patient. Hank Edwards is a fabulous story teller!
Zachary Zaba did a terrific job with the narration, and brought Dave and Oliver, along with Cody and Demetrius, to life! I enjoyed being back in Parson’s Hollow again, and hanging out with all of the Critter Catchers for this new season of monsters!
