I wanted more metal magic but all I got was bullying soldiers and insufferable testosterone posturing.

Ms. Meg and I are old friends. I know and accept what I am getting into and she rewards me with absurd plots, cheeky moments and electric tension. For her ability to write steamy chemistry and exciting plots, I must wrestle with emotional stunted manic pixie dream girls who everyone yearns for at first glance and makes dumb decisions for plot reasons. The balance is key, and unfortunately in this one it skews towards annoying fmc and not enough cool plot and sizzling romance.
fmc didn’t feel fully realised or have enough depth beyond her origins and her relationships with all the men were rushed. the dragon being stubborn, rude and unnecessarily cruel to hide is sudden scary big boy feelings is a tired trope with nothing new to show for it.

I just expected more pizzaz from Ms. Meg and I am heavily disappointed.

The world is interesting.
The ColdIron!!!
I’m actually looking forward to the next book, I want to see everything go *BOOM*.

I was expecting solid 3 stars, but surprisingly, it’s more a 3.5-3.75 stars.

Once the series is complete, it will be binge worthy.

This was really good and held my interest, which is hard to do of late.

A slave from the coal mines uses her natural ability to command metal to help her and her friends escape. She's the only one who makes it out though and is rescued / captured by a neighboring colony. Here she chooses to go into the military in hopes of becoming strong enough to go back and rescue her sister. In this colony 4 princes rule and 3 of them believe her to be the girl from the prophecy that will help them defeat the white witch.

Dnf page 40

Writing style isn't for me. The MMCs read very tween, yet they're supposedly hundreds of years old.

Also the fmc gets immediately groped while she's unconscious by an MMC. Immediate ick.

Wow. What a good book! I loved the character development, the world building, and the powers!
I do wish her identity would have stayed a secret longer. I love that trope. I also hope that she will stop being so damn stubborn and trust that voice in her head. I feel like if they could get along things would be golden!
It was in multi-pov but not many chapters were from the guys. Most of it was in her POV.
I love Nikolai so caring and loyal. I loved their introduction but I wished he would have explained his side.
Aelindor is great but I didn't really get to read much of him. He is so stoic and keeps his emotions on lockdown. I hope we get more of his side in the next book.
Caspian - the playboy, goofball. I feel like once he chooses someone there is no going back.
Drakken is an asshole but I think that is part of his charm/character. He is definitely going to need to grovel some and I hope she doesn't hold him back when/if that happens.

Interesting world building, kinda slow on the plot line. Definitely felt very zodiac academy with the why choose and “bullying”

I think the writing style definitely made it a little harder to read

A bit rushed

This felt a little rushed when compared to the author's usual offerings. I have to mention the book's many similarities to other books by this author (Especially shades of ruin and magic: FMC's likeness to Bob/Barbie, FMC pretending to be a boy, the 4 princes of various factions working together and sharing a fated mate). It all felt very familiar. I love this author but I feel like she's getting a type....

Entertaining but Anxiety Inducing

Spoiler alert

I was instantly attracted to this book upon learning the female lead character poses as a boy in an army academy setting. It cinched my attention when I could feel the female main character’s heart breaking emotions while reading the first few chapters. Her name is Max and her thoughts and feelings just dug deep.
The beginning of the book, is the aftermath of her and her fellow slave minors (around her age) escaped, and landed directly into a slaughter, one of her friends Rogue had passed before she could save him. Her guilt eats at her because she knew he had “feelings” for “him” and never knew he was actually a she. She’s found in the desert, (running from mutated humans) by Aelindor (Elf Heir), Nikolai (Vampire Heir), and Cassian (Shifter Heir). They all fall for her disguise too, at first. Despite her passed out, starved, dehydrated and in a weak state, as soon Nikolai confirmed she was indeed a She, she popped him one good on the nose from a dead faint. I had to laugh at that. She’s fiesty, and she’s got a secret weapon that she thinks is a demon inside her. It warns her of things, sometimes it defends her when bullies think it’s a good idea to mess with her. She believes it’s a demon but later on, we read she isn’t so sure it really is a demon. She never speaks of it.
This entity actually reminds me of one of Meg’s other series. Same situation. 2 personalities in one body.
The fourth heir Draken (Dragon Heir), was left at the strong hold, so they always have someone from their group there to defend the home base. The others decide to keep him in the dark about her being a she, and it’s only acknowledged that she’s a female after Draken decided to end “him” in dragon fire walk, culling the betrayers. Or whatever it’s called. Some burn up, but her, the fire traps her in the doorway, and is basically flirting with her body. The fire lifts her to the centre of the room, slowly burned off all her clothes (but her boots), and gently turned her around in a circle as if it was showing Her off. It formed a flaming triangle bikini, only covering her important bits. The 3 heirs were yelling at Drakken to get him to command his fire off her but he was at a loss. They all knew Drakken targeted and bullied her, singled her out to humiliate her. He encouraged his army of solders with all his verbal assaults against her, which made them think they could bully her too, as they were only following his lead. Thankfully, a prince showed up each time. First Nikolai shows up in the nick of time, she’s woken up by a group of 2nd years with higher ranks beating her up before slitting her throat. Another time, a huge grouping of the original bully’s friends, also saying their following their leaders thought process tried to eliminate her before she can cause more chaos while also trying to rape her. Her friend Bryn, tried to help, but Cassian showed up. Tore all their throats out but the would be rapist, who was saved for questioning I think. Aelindor showed up to save her from a demoness. The train fight scene was entrancing to read. I’m so glad she saved Aelindor. Despite her putting up walls, she’s definitely falling for the 3. Aelindor and his quiet calmness. Nikolai’s supportive side, and Cassian’s energetic possessiveness. Drakken, she has had a ton of feelings about him, but mostly in the butt hole category, she doesn’t swear even in her head. She does feel possessive around him, despite all the hurt and accusations he’s thrown at her.
She finally comes clean at the end of the book. Shes leaked coldiron in all the tech that powers the ridge court and its pallid court. Due to her innate ability, she can speak and command coldiron to do anything. So when she commands it to demolish itself or stop working or even kill someone, it will listen. Shes the missing piece of the prophecy the heirs always speak of.
He walks in shadows, she in fire, coldiron shroud(?), something like that.
Either way, I can’t wait to read the reactions to all of the heirs to the bombshell she dropped that she’s the 5th heir (in not so many words). She’s more powerful than anyone on earth, as her demon states with cryptic remarks, and they are all just realizing it. Super good read. Had my emotions all over the place. The big reveal that she was female and not male was On Pointe! I loved it! I wish we got to read Drakkens point of view on that chapter. He doesn’t really mention much to Her afterwards even on their mission. Can’t wait to read the next one!

This book is the perfect mix of mystery, danger, academy drama, and reverse harem perfection.

OMG, STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING RIGHT NOW AND ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR! 🚨✨

I just finished binge reading ColdIron (Blood and Bond Book 1) by the absolute queen Meg Xuemei X, and let me tell you, I am officially OBSESSED! I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the very first page to the absolute last, and my jaw is still on the floor! 🤯🙌

It’s 3am and once again because of an UnPutDownAble book, I will be useless later today even with a pot of coffee.

Now, let me address the elephant in the room: yes, I did see a couple of similarities to some of the author's other books. BUT! It wasn't anything overwhelming at all! It definitely wasn't anything that would make me say, "Oh my goodness, not this again!" Instead, it felt like visiting an old friend who just upgraded to a massive, glittering mansion. It’s familiar in the best way possible, but totally fresh!

Speaking of fresh, I AM ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH THIS NEW WORLD! 😍

I enjoyed this Post Apocalyptic world after the Quantum Bomb (AKA Q-Bomb) hit and destroyed life as we know it. The concept is beautifully reminiscent of other classic reverse harem novels we all know and love—you have the ultimate academy/school setting, the powerful Princes, and a brilliant mix of different shifter races, Fae, vampires, demons, etc. It has all the delicious tropes that make our hearts race! And, of course, we get a total KICK-ASS heroine of unknown origin with untold powers! She is everything I want in a female lead and more. 👑⚔️ Let me just add one thing that made me smile. Normally we get this tiny, dainty, cutsie little female lead, where the males dwarf them in size, easily pinning them down and being overbearing. Not Max! even her name is tough. Yes, she has lived her life as a boy, but even after her “gender reveal” she tall, strong and robust thanks to all of those years of hard labor. Max is someone who will kick ass and take names. I love this for her.

What Meg Xuemei X does so masterfully here is take these beloved tropes and spin them in a way that still makes the story completely unique. It instantly draws lovers of this paranormal/fantasy romance genre together for a brand-new, adrenaline-pumping thrill ride! 🎢💥

And oh my goodness, the budding romances... target locked! 🎯 This is definitely a delicious, agonizing, make-you-blush SLOW BURN between our incredible female lead and her three jaw-dropping guys:
• Aelindor, the Fae Prince.
• Caspian, the shifter heir.
• Nikolai, the vampire, and
• Drakken the dragon heir.

The chemistry? Electric. The anticipation? Driving me absolutely insane! 🥵🔥

This book is the perfect mix of mystery, danger, academy drama, and reverse harem perfection. Meg Xuemei X has completely outdone herself with Book 1, and I am begging, pleading, and crying for Book 2: Foolsilver, already! Do not sleep on this one, paranormal romance fans—4 out of 5 glittering stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Shades of Ruin and Magic, Half-Blood Academy, Monsters After Dark, and Reaper Academy are my favorite book series from Meg Xuemei X. I believe I have read all if not most of her book series and haven’t been disappointed yet. I cannot wait for books: 2, 3 and 4.

This is mostly pretty decent so far. I’m at about 85% and am even considering finishing it, which isn’t usually my thing.

It’s a bit tropey, but they’re mostly tropes I like. Well, I liked them during my 2 year RH phase. They’re a bit tired at this point and they’re very rarely done well anymore, but I don’t mind them from time to time.

Things I didn’t like:

- The beginning isn’t written very well imo. The FMC is a bit too perfect and everything is a bit too tragic. This happens all the damn time though so I pushed through.

- My most recent hangup with the whole genre is the one jerk that has to be included in every harem. In an effort to stand out, authors tend to make them go too far in the bullying department. This book doesn’t have that problem (so far). My main complaint is adjacent: the jerk doesn’t have a rational reason to act this way. In this case, it can’t even be blamed on the character because it’s entirely manufactured by the author.

MOST of the conflict with the dragon could’ve been prevented if he had the same info that the other MMCs had.. that the FMC is a girl. They had no reason to withhold that information. His behavior was fairly rational given his limited awareness. This sort of nonsense drives me up a wall. It’s apparently really difficult to create rational reasons for bullying? Because this happens all the time too.

It does resolve itself in this book and he doesn’t do anything unforgivable, so I’m letting it go.

- I don’t really mind OW drama if it’s done well and there’s no cheating, but this was written pretty flat. I’m not a huge fan of the man-whores with a virgin thing either.

- It was a bit too spice heavy for my preference. This is great for a lot of people. I’m busy and have things to do and just get bored though, so take that as you will. It sort of comes with a lot of repetition in the He’s So Hot and Smells So Good department.

- This absolutely, positively should’ve been a standalone. I’m so tired of series I could die.

Things I like:

- I always enjoy the girl pretending to be a guy trope. I’m not sure why. I think it prevents bullying from becoming sexual and therefore unforgivable (ie the infamous Nox and Ollie scene)?

- The FMC is super duper tall. Taller than some of the MMCs. But she’s also described as very feminine. I’m not tall, but I like seeing different characteristics being described as attractive. It also just makes more logistical sense if ginormous dicks are involved.

- The FMC has uncooperative magic, but we don’t have to watch her be a magic-less punching bag for an entire book, which is nice.

- The FMC has a pretty decent spine and doesn’t do anything obnoxiously stupid.

- I do like books where the guys can’t have sex with anyone else once they’ve met their bond.

So, worth a try if you need the RH itch scratched.

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This rates a 4/5 on my trauma scale- in that it’s bad, but not life threatening. You have been warned.

Max was a slave, working the mines since she was eight, and living in disguise as a boy the entire time. Her escape leads her to the four heirs that run an adjacent area, a fae prince, a dragon shifter, a wolf shifter, and a vampire. Between them, they search for a missing heir, foretold in a prophecy, one who will lead them to answers, and their land to safety.
While the heirs might believe Max is possibly the key, Max knows that the secrets she keeps could place her life, and theirs in danger- she simply wants to get strong enough to save her sister…

This book is the first in a new RH series by the author, and drops us firmly into a post-apocalyptic future, where life as we know it no longer exists. Max is an unusual heroine, she’s big and tough with Xena the Warrior Princess vibes, which I kind of love. Her life as a slave has made her strong in ways she doesn’t yet realise, and her abilities make her stronger still. Her inner demon is also rather funny- I can’t wait until we learn a little more about what is really going on there!
Our four heroes, Aelindor, Drakken, Caspian, and Nikolai are intriguing and mysterious in their own ways, with mostly unrevealed motivations and goals themselves.
The book itself is creating a slower burn romance, but there is some spice in this one, just not as much as might be expected from a romantasy.
With plenty of action, a hint of some big bad we have yet to face, and of course that cliffhanger, this is a book that you’ll be biting at the bit to read the sequel to as soon as it is released.
Recommended for fantasy, post apocalyptic fantasy, and romantasy lovers.

4 stars, 2-3 chili peppers

ColdIron is a why choose fantasy romance story that follows the FMC who has been enslaved to work in the mines since she was 8 years old. She is not ordinary female protagonist though. Instead, she has been hiding the fact that she was a girl and has dressed up as a man since she was young at the behest of her parents. The other thing she is hiding is that she has control of a specific metal called ColdIron. Through long planning, she attempts to escape from the mines with a few of her friends. During the escape though, one friend dies and two more are separated from her, and she is found unconscious in the middle of nowhere by the Princes. There are multiple MMCs, and each prince is of a different species - fae, dragon, wolf, and vampire. So there is a lot going on. The three princes that find her (all but the dragon) discover she is a woman disguising herself, so they know one of her secrets early on and feel protective and drawn to her instantly. The dragon prince is untrusting of her immediately, doesn't know she is a woman because the other princes didn't tell him, and he begins to target her unfairly since he believes her to be a spy for the magical white witch the realm is fighting against. Although this is a why choose book, there have only been intimate relations with one of the princes in book 1, and kissing for the other 2 princes. The FMC and the dragon prince are still at odds by the end of book 1 - so tension is building between those two. This was a great entry into this world and I'm curious to see how things play out in book 2.

Let the nitpicking commence:

Chapter 5 -shrugged off his clothes in one violent motion. ...A black and gold dragon emerged, the size of a building.

Chapter 8 Why are you in such a hurry? Drakken stepped into my path... His dragon form had shredded his clothes.
The same clothing he had taken off before shifting?

I love coldiron. They’re like eager little puppies just wanting to please. Also loyal.

I’ll go along with Max binding her breasts, keeping her hair short and deepening her voice to make people think she’s a man. What about menses? How would she be able to disguise it or did her lack of nutrition and harsh living conditions keep her from having them?

Here we go again: Chapter 14 ...a mirror fogged at the edges from the steam. Nikolai had bathed here earlier.
Max exits bathroom - Nikolai leaned against the wall... He’d showered too. His ash-blond hair was still damp...
Why does it appear that he just finished bathing? It’s apparent that he had already not long before Max arrived.

I’m really liking this but I have petty questions such as how did Max know what a bikini was? I doubt she would have ever seen or even heard about one in the mine. There were references to other things that left me wondering how she would know about them. How would Max be aware of the Bible in her conversation with Bryn? I think she was eight when her parents died. That’s a long time to hold onto what would be obscure information when fighting for your life on a daily basis. Further on it’s hinted that she had access to reading materials in her down time (which I thought she'd spent sleeping and recuperating from working in the mine)

How did the heirs attain such luxurious furnishings, clothing, modern plumbing, etc.? They also managed to feed and clothe thousands in a post-apocalyptic world. Seems unlikely.

Max was supposed to receive one on one training with Caspian, Aelindor and Nikolai yet there’s no mention of it occurring,

Why didn’t the books in the library catch fire?

Great plot with a traumatic cliffhanger ending. More coldiron, please.

I got sucked in by a reel, found it on Kindle Unlimited, and started reading before I thought to check whether the sequel was out yet. It was not. Book two drops end of July. I am still annoyed, and I finished this two days ago. My TBR has filed a formal complaint because I have ignored it again.

Cold Iron pulled me in fast and kept me there. The magic system is inventive, the conflict is layered without being overwhelming, and there are enough mysteries threaded through this world to keep you turning pages without losing track of what you are trying to figure out. The spice is solid, and the why-choose setup is shaping up in a way that has me very invested in where this goes.

My one hesitation is the duology format. Everything I want more of, more world, more tension, more of these characters, is supposed to wrap up in a single second book. I want to believe it, but I am skeptical. There is a lot of story here, and I have my fingers crossed that book two is really long, or listing it as a duology is a mistake, and there will be more to come.

This is a quick read that does not feel rushed while you are in it. I was engaged cover to cover.
If you love why choose, fantasy romance with real world building, and a magic system you actually want to understand, this one is for you. Fair warning, though: go in knowing you will be waiting on book two. If you are the impatient type like me, maybe bookmark this one until late July and then binge both. Future you will thank present you.

3.5⭐️
She is a large woman (tall and strong) disguised as a boy for her whole life to keep her safe (for some reason?) and she escapes her prison as a miner and is found by three princes out of the 4 that run an alliance against the white witch that is public enemy #1. This is a why choose but they must be fated mates because she is not described to be very attractive especially being taller and bigger than most men. There are a lot of sub plots that are mentioned and glossed over and we don’t really know what’s important in the long run since there is a sub plot of the white witch and the devil and the veil and the demon in her head. There is a snarky voice in her head she calls the demon (it’s giving One Dark Window). Three out of the men are obsessed with her but we don’t get much one on one action and some bullying from one MMC. There is just so much to this book it’s like the author needed to dip her toes into every type of fantasy book, while entertaining its kinda all over the place. I love the overall premise of the book and plan to read book 2 when it comes out, this was just a lot.

Currently reading at 9%.

So I have a love-hate relationship with this author's books. The fmcs are almost always tstl to stupid to live. But I saw a few social media ads for this book and decided to take a look because it Loosely reminded me of the other book this author did with I think it was Barbie or Bambi who dressed up as a guy. So the ad I saw said that they didn't know she was a woman but at least three of them figured out that she was a woman and was wearing a binder right away. Her logic didn't make a lot of sense either because she wanted to escape from the mine but then come back and get her sister who I think is six and a half but to me that makes no sense she should have brought her sister right away with her because they could move her or kill her or take her or do all sorts of things to her and that's if she could even get back to her sister. You hear about the prophecy very early and some of them think that she may be the person of the prophecy. I might continue the series but it feels very similar to other books that the author has written and it feels kind of boring.

This was actually really good! I found the world building to be interesting and unique and I love anything with alchemy and metal control I think it’s so cool. I really wish we had learned more about what she is but I also feel like it’s kind of obvious I just wish they had given us a bit more information. I can’t wait to see what happens in book two I have a feeling the collector is going to have a big role and I want them to know about their mates which I’m assuming they are at least I think it’s pretty obvious? One thing I am kind of confused about is why didn’t she bring her sister with her when she left? Like I get it it’s dangerous but wouldn’t you rather take the chance to bring her with? And you already brought all your friends with you? Also wouldn’t she be punished for you escaping? I don’t think I really understand who the sister is and what her role was at the mine but I don’t think I could have left my sibling behind no matter what

Also I’m so so so over hearing about how fucking tall and giant she is like it gets to a point holy shit

Very good. 4.5 stars.

I thought that the book had a very good plot and now I'm definitely looking forward to the next one when it comes out. According to the author this is the first book of four for this series and now I almost wished I would've waited so i could just read them all in a row. But too late. For me, the book flew by when I was reading. I really liked the plot and where the storyline is going. There is barely any spice but it kind of fits for the story, i wouldn't really expect much more with this book. With her other books/series I'm sure the spice the will ramp up (hopefully). The main characters are written well i just wish we could get to know each of them a little better or have them interact more. This book reminds me a little bit of her other series with "little Bob" with the whole demon in her head. I'll be interested to see how this series ends.

So happy to see Meg back with another Why Choose!

The world building captivated me from the very beginning. Max, a slave miner in the White Witche's mine escapes to find her self with the four princes of one of the kingdoms after a Quantum bomb was dropped making the world we know non existent. What was the US later became 4 kingdoms with the east coast who knows since the veil of Shadow took over.

Max, dressed as a boy, is navigating a new life, trying to get stronger so she can get back to rescue her sister. Things heat up between 3 of the princes, banter and a strong, tall FMC. It was nice to not read about a lite tiny FMC. She is just as big as the princes and can hold her own.

The cliffhanger was good, cannot wait to see how Max navigates her new knowledge and find out who and truly what she is.

4.5 stars; really well done w/ complex (not too annoying) characters, good efforts at world building, mystery i actually want to know the answers too. FMC is strong, but realistic; i feel like her journey in this series will be worth being here for; the MMCs are still under-development for me.... Not too obnoxious, but still quite blurry along the edges. Given the good writing and series plan, i have all the hopes they will be great for the FMC by the end. Moderate spice, with promises of more in future books. Really grateful i fell on this when i did - was in a bit of a romantasy slump (alllll the same types of characters, alllll the same plot lines). This was refreshing and INTERESTING. I highly recommend. Note the mild cliff (grateful for that too) - hoping for book 2 this summer! 🤞🏻❤️

So Far It’s a Good Read!

I enjoy the characters (mostly), storyline and the pace (again, mostly). This is just me nitpicking but the Fmc is tedious to me with her refusal to acknowledge or confront her fears. I get that in real life, it would work in the way the author intended but this is fantasy so that’s kinda dragging for me. Another nitpick I have is correlated with the first complaint. She’s obviously special and while I do like that she doesn’t assume or behave entitled or arrogant, I hate that she calls all of them “sir”. It doesn’t fit her personality, even if she isn’t aware of her standing with them. She seems too strong to overuse the “sirs”, even if it is military.

Besides my ramblings, I do like the book and look forward to the rest of the series!

must read - 10/10

I was a bit skeptical about the book. But OMG it far exceeded my expectations!! I couldn’t put it down. It has story building, character development, love development, and it’s an emotional roller coaster !! You can’t help but love the FMC. At times she frustrated me a bit but I understand WHY she thinks the way she does. Someone who’s known only trauma, wants to protect herself from more and isn’t willing to seek deeper knowledge about herself.

I really wish we can have more POV from the male love interest. Hopefully the next book we can see more. Definitely will be reading book 2 to see where this story goes!

For my taste it's definitely a 1*

I have nothing against the LGPT crowd but I would actually have liked to know what I was reading about before. A 6ft 7 - 10 female that's more heavy set than men...... Yeah no..!!! Even Lilith is depicted as feminine.

Max is most definitely not a woman. Trans yes...... So here begs the question.. Why not just write is as so??? And just tell us readers...

Max reads so wrong to me, the boxers, the voice, the walking, the stamina, the everything. I like heroines I get excited about and feel like I can back them up.

Meg this is a miss from me.

Be honest with us, tell us what we are getting into...

This was pretty good. I will say the first few chapters were rough to get past but once u finally get Max the main female lead to the academy things get way better. I loved her blunt personality and her strength. A great start to a strong female lead.

As for the males in this story, because it is a reverse harem, I'm still a bit unsure how i feel about them. They are still reading slightly flat but i have hope for book 2 and their development.

Overall this was a good read and had alot of great troups and i am excited for book two.

Damnit! I started reading before realizing this is just book 1 of 4 and the rest of them aren’t out yet. I hate when I do that.

Great book, even if three of the four princes fell into lust/love rather quick. Unique-ish concept too with fae, vampires, and dragons, but it’s a post apocalyptic world with jeeps and trains too. I liked that a lot.

The story moved very quick and was entertaining and held my attention. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series. But will likely wait till all four are out, then I can reread this one and finish them all together.

A unique, well thought out series

I’m really enjoying Max’s story so far. Very intriguing with a mystery I’m looking forward to unraveling. It’s a slow burn, reverse harem set in a post apocalyptic earth where realms were destroyed and combined by the Q bomb. Max has 4 hot supernatural princes vying for her and all 4 have distinct personalities. Hoping Drakken gives us a reason to love him in book 2.
As always, Meg does a great job building unique worlds, characters, & storylines.
Also, Yay! Book 2 is set to release on my birthday!🎂 🎉

Did Not Finish

Three pages in and I already know this read isn’t for me.

We hit the ground running, fighting, bleeding. But there’s too many names, too many enemies, too many people lost I didn’t even know existed.

Maybe it’s my age, I love action but I need an introduction, maybe a bit of a slow burn between me and the main character. Action is fine - info dumping however is too much for me to digest on page one.

I’ll move on so I don’t become a person who writes bitter reviews because I didn’t know when to walk away.

I spent the first part of this book wondering if I’d somehow skipped Book 1. There’s a lot of world-building and setup before things really settle in. The demon absolutely stole every scene she was in and was easily my favorite character. The marketing made this seem much spicier than it actually is—there’s really only one spicy scene, while the rest is fantasy, politics, and military training. The demon generated more spice than the actual book. It was entertaining enough, but not enough to make me immediately need the sequel.

I am not one to write reviews. I rate, and move on. But I needed to stop for this one. I LOVED this book. I wanted more and more and more. More details, more lore. I love that the book answered almost NONE of the questions I (or the FMC) have, and I need to read more. I’m starting the next book immediately. I love that the romance is ALMOST a subplot and the story is SO engaging. The plot has be sitting on the edge of my seat, and I have no idea what twists I’m going to get with this one. I need more.
