Summer Under the Big Sky

Rate this book
Lacey came to Montana for a fresh start. A new job. A steady routine. Miles of open road, perfect for running when her thoughts grow too loud.

It was supposed to be simple.

What she didn’t anticipate was her first love reappearing—with a hotter-than-she-remembers smile and the kind of presence that derails all common sense. And to top it off, she can’t seem to avoid him.

He’s in her town. At her job. And everywhere she turns… stirring up memories and feelings she thought she left behind.

So Lacey sets a few very reasonable rules for herself: avoid Luke, don’t stare at his muscles, definitely don’t fall for that dimple, and pretend she’s over him.

All of which she is failing miserably at.

Luke’s life is simple—early morning sweat sessions, long days training clients, and evenings spent on the baseball field. But it always felt like something was missing… and he’s pretty sure the missing piece just arrived in a sundress and a smile that can undo him.

Lacey—his ex—has just shown up in the town he now calls home.

The problem? She doesn’t seem nearly as thrilled to see him.

If anything, Lacey is doing everything she can to keep her distance—to act like whatever they had is firmly in the past… but the more she pulls away, the harder Luke tries to convince her they’re worth another shot.

But there’s a hitch to his plan to get her back—

He didn’t tell her the whole truth the first time around…And he’s not sure he can tell her now.

One summer. One second chance they never saw coming.

Can they fix what tore them apart eight years ago?

✨ARC Book Review✨

This book was so cute!

I really liked Lacey’s character. She went through a lot, even though she came from privilege. I didn’t care for her parents or the way they made her feel, which perfectly set the stage for her issues with Luke, her ex boyfriend. I loved she ran into him again after so many years apart. Seriously, the best kind of awkward!

I loved how Luke completely short circuited when he saw Lacey again! Them having to work together was the kind of tension I live for! I also loved that his family wasn’t judgmental and simply supported him when it came to talking about Lacey.

It was endearing to watch them slowly let down their walls and be honest with each other.

And the ending was just so sweet!

There’s nothing like a second chance romance. Especially one with found family, where her heart heals and he stands up for her.

Luke and Lacey have such a sweet story! I enjoyed getting the glimpses into the past through little flash backs throughout the story.

Both main characters have growth-filled character arcs, and Luke’s family makes me want to book a house at a lake in Montana just to see if I’ll find a fun and love filled family like his! I’d also love to read a story for each of his siblings (especially Sophie!!) and I bet his parents have a swoony romance story of their own to tell!

This sweet, kisses only romance is the perfect summer read. From the lake scenes to moments spent at the fair, this book will have you longing to just sit on the front porch and read the whole book in one sitting! Be prepared to laugh, and bring a tissue or two for the tears you might shed.

Thank you so much for my early copy, Ashley, and a chance to help share this book baby with the world!

I received an advanced reader copy from the author.

As a Montana girl, having books set in Montana always makes me smile. When beginning this book, I was hooked at their interaction in the supermarket. We’ve all been there. Running into someone you’ve been avoiding for years. I thought this book brought to life a very fun second chance romance! I usually do not like miscommunication tropes, and honestly it is what prevented me from making this a 5 star review, but it was not an extremely frustrating miscommunication trope.

Thank you Ashley McKenna for providing this eARC in return for my honest review!

4.5⭐️ This book was definitely a change of pace for me and I devoured it!! Romance books are usually a hit or miss for me and this was absolutely a hit. I loved the pacing of the story and the characters were all so easy to fall in love with.

I always appreciate a good 2nd chance romance and the author did it perfectly. Lacey and Luke had amazing chemistry from the first chapter and I knew they would end up together, but the journey is what made their story so good. Lacey is such an over-thinker who continuously questions her own worth and I really related to that. For Luke to be so patient and understanding and willing to go at her pace made him the ideal MMC. They both made mistakes and I love that the author held them both accountable.

If you’re looking for a summer romance read, then this is the perfect book for you!!

Summer Under the Big Sky is a heartfelt second chance romance that completely pulled me in from 30%(but that’s cause I wanted them to be together) to finish.

I loved Lacey and Lucas and the way their connection never truly faded, even after time and distance separated them. There’s something so emotional about watching two people who were always meant to find their way back to each other, even when life takes them in different directions.

The small-town setting adds so much warmth and nostalgia to the story, making it feel grounded and comforting while still delivering all the emotional tension you want from a second chance romance.

And the baseball aspect? Absolutely loved it. As a baseball girly, that element brought an extra layer of charm and atmosphere that made the story even more engaging.

Tropes included:
⚾️ Second chance romance
⚾️ Small-town setting
⚾️ Baseball romance

Overall, this was an emotional, cozy, and satisfying read about timing, love, and the pull of a connection that never really disappears.

Just when I thought. I was going to read a cozy book. How wrong was I. This book has everything. It is a cozy love story. But two thirds in, I was screaming and yelling. To having me in tears at the end. And I loved every page of the book.

Luke is a golden retriever. He loves Lacey since they met at the age of sixteen. He is cute, carring and so lovable. With a great family.
Lacey is a strong women, with a kind heart. Who loves Luke since the day they met. Her live isn't easy. With parents who expact her to act a certain way. Not carring about her feelings.

You need this book for the summer! Is there anything better than a second chance romance? I don't think so! The vibes are superb and I couldn't read this book fast enough. The cover alone sold me! Their banter is super cute. I loved the small town setting. It's basically a necessity for a great summer second chance romance.

Thank you to the author and Books & Bloom PR for the ARC.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the small-town setting, the second-chance romance and the author's sense of humor. There were several moments that made me laugh out loud. There also emotional character growth in this story, that really added depth to this book.

I adored all the references to Hilary Duff, Lilo and Stitch, The Hunger Games and other early 2000s movies. These references and the way they were written, perfectly showcased the author's humor and added an extra layer of fun to the story. They genuinely made me laugh more than once.

While this is very much a sweet romance, I appreciated that it also had more emotional depth than I expected. The FMC's complicated relationship with her parents (or lack thereof...) added another layer to the story and made her character growth feel all the more meaningful. Watching her slowly unpack the impact of her upbringing and eventually stand up for herself was both satisfying and rewarding.

One thing I personally struggled with was the number of side characters. There were so many people who were introduced briefly, spoke once, and then faded into the background. I found it difficult to keep track of everyone. For example, the group of older women who were introduced as the town's gossip circle. They certainly added to the small-town charm, but I kept expecting them to play a larger role in the plot. Overall, there were quite a few one-dimensional side characters, which meant the found family vibe never fully landed for me. I would have loved to see more development in the FMC's friendships for example.

Another aspect that didn't completely work for me was how the MMC's ”stalker” and harassment situation was handled. The situation was treated as humorous, but knowing what the FMC had gone through in her own past made that contrast feel a little odd. I found myself wishing for a slightly more serious reaction from her, given her personal experiences.

I also noticed a shift in tone as the story progressed. In the beginning, the book felt much more like a rom-com. The references, the FMC's inner monologue, and her first interaction with the MMC, after eight year, were genuinely hilarious. She had a strong voice, and I found myself laughing quite a bit. As the story went on, however, the humor gradually faded and was replaced by heavier themes such as childhood neglect and the long-term impact it had on the FMC's life. I didn't mind the change, but it was more noticeable than I expected given how the book started.

I really loved the ending. The author wove everything together so nicely. It was incredibly romantic, and seeing the FMC finally get her happy ending after everything she'd been through was so rewarding. While the book wasn't perfect for me personally, it was still a genuinely enjoyable read with plenty of heart, humor and charm🩷

ARC Review

This was such a sweet and heartwarming read, the perfect book to kick off summer. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Montana’s wide-open skies, charming small-town community, and beautiful landscapes, the setting felt like a character in its own right and added so much warmth to the story.

Lacey moves to Montana for a fresh start and a new job, only to come face-to-face with the last person she expected to see: her first love, Luke. After eight years apart, the two are reunited and suddenly forced to work together. Determined to keep things professional, they try to ignore the feelings and history that still linger between them.

I loved the chemistry and shared history between Lacey and Luke. Their relationship felt authentic, and watching them navigate past misunderstandings, old hurts, and unresolved feelings was incredibly satisfying. Both characters experience meaningful growth throughout the story. Lacey struggles with self-worth and the impact of her family dynamics, while Luke shows patience, understanding, and a willingness to give her the space she needs to heal.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the found family aspect. Luke’s family is welcoming, supportive, and full of love, everything Lacey has been missing in her own life. The sense of community and belonging added so much emotional depth to the story.

Summer Under the Big Sky is a warm, closed-door romance filled with heartfelt moments, second chances, found family, and emotional healing. It focuses on character growth and meaningful relationships rather than unnecessary drama, making it a wonderfully comforting read.

If you love small-town romances, second-chance love stories, found family, and wholesome romances with plenty of heart, be sure to add this one to your TBR!!

Review of advance copy received from Luna Literary and the author Vee Taylor
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.75 stars
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Release Date: 04/06/26

Tropes:
🐂one night stand
🐂 forced proximity
🐂 small town romance
🐂 city girl x small town guy
🐂 OCD rep
🐂 pro bull rider

Firstly a huge thanks to Luna Literary and Vee Taylor for allowing me the opportunity to read an ARC of Buck Em Cowgirl.

Yep….ok…..there goes my heart to another fictional cowboy, if anyone locates it, please can you return it to me. 2026 is shaping up to be an all feels reading year and I am absolutely here for it.

Vee Taylor bought it home with this book! And when I tell you that I was OBSESSED with Fable and Beau, you need to believe me. The chemistry between the two almost set my Kindle alight 🔥

The connection between Fable and Beau was beautifully written. Beau on the outside is our big strong rugged bull rider but undercover he is soft, gentle, caring and falls hard for Fable. And Fable….oh Fable I loved her so much. She felt kinda messy in the best way. She was so relatable with her struggles with self-doubt and obsessive tendencies, I resonated with her. Vee did such a wonderful job in writing her with so much raw emotion, I found myself getting lost in it and wanting to reach out and give her a hug.

Beau Banks is going to leave a hole in your world and you ruined for all other cowboys!

Its packed full of longing, brewing tension and the sweetest emotional vulnerability craftily hidden beneath some extreme stubbornness. Add all that with a side order of cowboy charm and I dare you not to love this.

3.5 rounded down

I really enjoyed most of this book but for a few things here and there that bothered me the more I thought about them.

But first, the positives. Luke and Lacey's story was very sweet; teenage sweethearts that never lost sight of each other despite eight years apart. While Lacey works through her significant emotional trauma, Luke is patient and kind, giving her the space she needs to come to terms with everything.

Lacey is funny, and has some great character development. The friends she makes are supportive and friends she had before welcome her with open arms.

Unfortunately outside of Lacey everyone seemed pretty one dimensional. Her mother is a new age Disney villain; her father has (if I remember correctly), less than 3 lines; the majority of the other women seem to be nothing more than baby makers; and Luke is your standard golden retriever.

The biggest issue for me was the woman sexually harassing/ assaulting Luke and everyone (including Lacey!) writing it off like that's no big deal. She even goes so far as to threaten Lacey at one point, then she's never brought up again. There are other events throughout the book that make that whole subplot so much worse looking back.

It was a cute second chance story, but I thought there were a lot of things that could've been handled differently.

I received this ARC as part of Books & Blooms influencer PR team. All opinions are my own.

This is the perfect book for fans of Hallmark rom-coms, second chance, and first love. Oh, he falls first and harder! The yearning, tension, chemistry, slow burn of fighting their feelings again was 🤌🏽. Of course Luke never stopped loving Lacey and fell harder first....and of course I love him.

Lacey's personality was superb. I wanted to kick her parents and throat punch Ben. Also...the raccoon part is hilarious. Read this, so that you can laugh till you are in tears.

Luke was down bad from the start and only ever wanted Lacey to have everything she ever wanted. Reading about how he doesn't give up, the way he posters her but shows up, the way he helps everyone out....he's just a delight.

❤️ Lines:
They say you can't outrun your problems. And that may be true. But if you have a fire Playlist, a full tank of gas, and a passenger seat loaded with snacks, you can definitely drive away from them.

So not cool of my eyes to betray me like that. It was quite the view, though, not going to lie.

I mean...that was basically peak manliness right there. 🤣

Would that be wildly inappropriate? Yes. Do i still want to do it? Also yes.

Life—it's fragile. Quick. And if you're always guarding your heart, you might miss the things that make it beat in the first place.

Show her, with every little thing, that she matters. That she's worth it. Not just once. Not just when it's easy. Always.

Maybe I need to purchase a small stack of firewood he can chop so I can just. . .
observe. You know, for research.

Lacey moves to Montana hoping for a fresh start, but she never expected to run into Luke, her first love. As old feelings resurface and Luke makes it clear he wants another chance, Lacey finds it harder and harder to keep her distance. But with secrets from the past still between them, they must decide if their second chance is worth the risk.

I really enjoyed this sweet summer romance. Lacey and Luke’s second chance love story was easy to root for, and I loved watching their relationship develop as they kept finding themselves crossing paths. The chemistry between them felt natural, and I couldn’t help but smile every time they unexpectedly ran into each other.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the contrast between their families. Luke’s family was warm, welcoming, and supportive, while Lacey’s family relationships were much more complicated. It was heartwarming to see Lacey not only find love with Luke but also find a sense of belonging with his family. Their acceptance and support added an extra layer to the story that I really appreciated.

If you’re looking for a charming small-town romance filled with family, healing, and second chances, this is a great one to add to your summer reading list.

"One summer. One second chance they never saw coming.”

Is it a meet-cute when they are exes?

If we are going with yes, then I loved, loved, loved, Lacey and Luke’s meet-cute.

I am obsessed over this second chance story of Lacey and Luke. Their chemistry is perfect in this clean romance with some kissing. I found myself aching for Luke to kiss Lacey. Can he break through the walls she has built around her heart?

As their story progresses, we see glimpses of their past and eventually the secret of what destroyed their relationship as teens is revealed.

I loved the way this story was written and how the characters made me feel. Luke’s family is fantastic, and their love for Lacey is a beautiful addition to their story. I laughed, I cried, I was angry about the secrets, and my heart melted in the end.

Thank you for the ARC. Summer Under the Big Sky is truly a great story. All opinions are my own.

Summer Under the Big Sky is a beautiful story that I know I will revisit again and again with many re-reads. I encourage you to read it if you need a slow burn, second chance romance in your life.

Summer Under the Big Sky by Ashley McKenna

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️ 0/5

Tropes:
☀️ Second Chance Romance
💕 Childhood Love / First Love
🏡 Small Town Romance

Lacey and Luke met as teenagers during summers at the lake, and year after year they kept coming back. What started as a summer romance grew into plans for a future together, until life—and some not-so-supportive parents—got in the way.

Years after their heartbreaking split right before college, Lacey takes a job in a small town and unexpectedly finds herself face-to-face with Luke again. While she’s hesitant to trust him with her heart a second time, Luke is determined to be patient and prove that he’s not going anywhere this time.

This was such a cute, easy read. I really enjoyed watching Luke work to earn Lacey’s trust back and seeing them navigate their complicated history. If you’re looking for a sweet second-chance romance with plenty of nostalgia and first-love feelings, this one is worth picking up.

There isn’t any spice in this one, but the story still kept me invested from beginning to end.

And one question remains… what did Lacey end up doing with the cream? 🤣

"Summer Under the Big Sky" by Ashley McKenna is a second chance, smalltown summer dream of a book to add to your TBR for Summer 2026. This story grabbed me hard around 20% and I devoured it in less than 12 hours. I stayed up until 1am to finish it because I had to get to the ending to finish Lacey and Lucas's story. This releases June 3rd.

Their story in the first act is flashback mixed eith present to set the pace of the story and Ashley did it very nicely in the first act. The emotional attachment they both have for one another, Lacey fights it while Lucas keeps the pace from the moment in the grocery store seeing her after so many years to the scene as the final family news comes to head.. soooo good.

To say this story was written with the mindset it was always you is justified in the last few chapters. The details notes of all the summer feels and emotions thst occur with it. Lacey's family is the driving edge to what shifted their story from so long ago but it doesn’t stop Lucas chasing it from the start to the end.

Lacey is your clsssic over thinker trying to find her place in the world where Lucas knows what he wants and isn't going to let anyone come beteeen them in this small town second chance its always been you story. The patience this man packs throughout the story is what us readers want not fictionally but in real life. I have my real life Luke and I even told my husband a few times you are my Luke babe.

This is an easy read that you will devour in one sitting between the witty banter, small town mindset and amazing side characters who make statements throughout and the HEA is spot oh chefs kiss. Ashley uses a perfect potion to give us a beautifully written summer romance to read whether at the beach, shore, pool or lake with "Summer Under the Big Sky" with the attention to detail, humor and priceless moments to grab you into the novel.

If your vibe is:
🌸 Smalltown
🌸 Second Chance

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read Summer Under the Big Sky by Ashley McKenna.

This second-chance romance set against the beautiful backdrop of Montana was a sweet and heartfelt read. Lacey arrives in Montana looking for a fresh start, only to come face-to-face with Luke, her first love, and the man she never truly got over. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I enjoyed watching them navigate their complicated past while finding their way back to each other.

While I enjoyed the romance and the small-town charm, the story felt a little slow in places, and I found myself wanting a bit more emotional depth and tension between the characters. That said, Luke was incredibly swoony, and I loved the themes of forgiveness, healing, and second chances woven throughout the story. If you enjoy sweet small-town romances, first-love reunions, and Montana settings, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Lacey is going to Montana for a fresh start what she did not expect was to run into Luke, the one who broke her heart. She cannot believe her luck, especially when she finds out they are coworkers. She tells him she wants to keep it professional because she needs this job and this fresh start. He agrees but makes it very clear he wants a second chance. Luke knows he hurt her but she does not know the full story. Lacey refuses to let herself get hurt again but what if this is her second chance and she is letting it slip through her fingers. Is true love worth the risk?

I absolutely adored this book! I loved Luke and Lacey and their story. I loved the dual points of views and the flashbacks to the past. This was a great summer romance but had great found family aspects to it as well. This is just a book that will make you smile!

BIG Views BIG feelings!
This was such a feel-good Hallmark-style read!

The contrast between families reminds me just how different someone's upbringing can be and still end up in the same orbit as you.
I wish I had gotten a bit more background on both families, but the story has enough.
Lacey is strong and vulnerable, which is totally understandable.
Luke, from the very beginning, with his guilt weighing on him, is trying and failing, but continues to push on.  They have chemistry, and everyone knows you can only fight it for so long.
I wish we got more 'Luke and Ethan' convos, and the same with Lacy and Sophie.
Family isn't always blood, and love isn’t always a straight and easy path.
This was such a good weekend read for me.
Anyone who needs a family-filled story of second chances and love, you won’t be disappointed.

This book was such a fun read. I loved the chemistry between Lacey and Luke and how, even after all the years apart, they still had that pull to one another.

I really loved the friend group Lacey found herself a part of, and how interconnected they all were with Luke's family. And the banter was so good. Such a fun relationship, and even though they have crazy chemistry, it's also clear they really are good friends.

I really liked the small-town Montana setting (i've always wanted to visit!) and there were some moments that made me laugh out loud. One in particular I did NOT see coming. 👀😂

This was a really easy book to read and I flew through it! It's set in the summer, but would be a great book to read any time.

This book had all of those heart warming feelings you get when someone mentions summer love, first love, and small town romances. It was equal parts sweet, nostalgic, and bittersweet. All of those years wasted due to miscommunication was hard to read because it could’ve been prevented.

The scenery was vivid and made me feel like I was there in Montana. I loved the flashbacks to their teenage years because it showed exactly how and why their relationship evolved. And the fact that Luke kept a shoebox of their memories? Swoon fest.

This was a great quick read to kick off the summer romance season.

This book was such a cute second chance romance summer read! This book has me laughing out loud and as a millennial girly I absolutely devoured all of the early 2000s references that were in it!

Luke & Lacey had such a sweet & heartwarming story! They had great chemistry from the beginning & I loved being able to root for them throughout the entire book. Getting to see glimpses of their past in the flashbacks added the perfect amount of context to their story.

I loved how welcoming Luke’s family was from the start & even after all the time that passed they still welcomed Lacey with no judgement and open arms!

Thank you so much Ashley for this ARC!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this!

Personally, I don't think this book was for me, I did not feel engaged with the story at all, but I can definitely see this being a very popular book for many others. It just unfortunately was not for me.

I loved how the characters' dialogue bounced off each other, and the humorous situations that happened were great and memorable. The story itself just fell flat for me.

Again, I think it was just me, and not the book itself 🤷‍♀️.

This was my first book by Ashley McKenna and it was such a sweet second chance romance. This is a no spice book and they really just hit different. I was in quite a reading slump when I started this book but got into it real quick! We have this beautiful teenage romance that just left our FMC (Lacey) broken after years… and our MMC (Luke) broke her heart but the way they found each other again was just beautiful. The side characters really gave the story additional depth and I just adored them all. A solid 4⭐️ for me.

Sometimes it takes one person, just that one to make your world feel so full. That’s what Luke was to Lacey. Think “if found family” was a person it’s definitely him for her.

This story was written to perfection! Even the parts that made me so sad I cried. There’s just something about the found family trope that always seems to pull at my heart strings.

If you’re looking for a devastatingly great summer read! This is definitely the one! The funny parts had me laughing so hard 🤣 read it and you’ll find out.

ARC reader review:

Summer Under the Big Sky completely swept me away.

Ashley McKenna created characters that felt genuine, flawed, and incredibly easy to root for. Watching them navigate heartbreak, healing, and unexpected second shot at love was both emotional and heartwarming. The romance had the perfect amount of slow-burn tension, sweet moments, and undeniable chemistry that kept me smiling the entire time.

What I loved most was how this story wasn’t just about falling in love—it was about finding yourself again, embracing second chances, and realizing that home isn’t always a place; sometimes it’s the people who make you feel seen.

I could practically feel the sunshine, fresh air, and peaceful small-town atmosphere while reading. It made me want to pack my bags and spend the summer under the big sky myself.

If you’re a fan of heartfelt small-town romances, emotional character growth, and stories that leave you with a full heart and a huge smile, don’t miss this one.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. This is one I’ll be recommending all summer long!

This, too, is a book for a nice, casual read. Think of it as a Hallmark movie that you watch on a Friday night with a glass of wine and some chocolate. Nothing special, just setting your thoughts aside for a moment and mindlessly swooning over a feel-good story set in a small town named Hamilton, where childhood sweethearts Lacey and Luke reunite after eight years.
