Immortality Island by Nikki Jefford is a supernatural romance that puts a fun twist on the reality game show formula. In a competition where the winner gets to live forever you get highly motivated humans, vampires with hidden motivations, demanding challenges, alliances, backstabbing and betrayal, power couples, and an enemies-to-lovers romance with some on screen spice and a lot of yearning. I had so much fun reading this book, and it feels like the perfect summer read for a lazy weekend at the beach.
Immortality Island is set on present-day earth where the mundane and supernatural are fully integrated together. Werewolves go to college, zombie influencers campaign for zombie rights, vampire clans have become brand names, and humans have figured out spellcasting. There is a lot of worldbuilding and lore to dive into (and two previous books set in same world that I haven’t read) which really sets the stage for an entertaining story.
The story follows Joni Mullins, human, college athlete, spellcaster extraordinaire, and Sterling Alder, vampire, recently elevated to master of his clan. Sterling is seeking vengeance for the death of his brother, a sibling for a sibling, so Joni Mullins has to die. Joni has a brain tumour, and her only chance to escape death is to win the reality game show Immortality Island and be turned into a vampire. When Sterling discovers that Joni is competing on Immortality Island, he takes up one of the vampire master positions on the show for a chance to get close to Joni and carry out his vengeance. Joni is going to fight to stay alive, but Sterling has other ideas.
The Immortality Island reality gameshow is essentially a riff on Survivor, with a focus on all the things that makes Survivor so compelling - the evolution of relationships throughout the competition. Being a great spellcaster and winning immunity challenges isn’t going to help you survive the island if you aren’t making friends and building alliances, and Jefford does a great job of ramping up the tension as each contestant gets eliminated. There are lots of twists and turns as secret alliances are built, public alliances break down, and friends become enemies. It’s very entertaining.
While friends are becoming enemies on the game show, enemies are becoming lovers as Sterling and Joni play out their private battle of life or death, and the simmering chemistry between the two starts to build with every interaction. For those who want to know you will be yearning for about two thirds of the book before you get to the handful of spicy scenes - they are quite vanilla but well earned and a great way to pay off the building tension. Joni gets a lot of growth as she fights for survival, while Sterling is revealed to have more depth and insight the more we get to know him. I think the way Joni and Sterling’s relationship evolves over the course of the book is handled very well, and I was definitely invested in seeing their relationship change and evolve.
So yeah this book was highly entertaining, easy to read, had some great twists and turns, and has left me wanting more. Exactly what I want from a summer read.

I received and eARC from Xpresso Book Tours and this is my honest review

Did I have fun? Absolutely. This was a quick, enjoyable read. This was enemies to lovers with vampires, zombies, and humans that had magic. The plot focused on two main components, 1) the romance, which was enemies to lovers and 2) contestants on a reality show similar to Survivor fighting to win so they have permission to be transformed into an immortal vampire. Of course there were hiccups along the way, a found family developed, and the MC’s had flirty banter. The pace ebbed and flowed from slow to fast, depending on the part of the story. There was some spice near the end, but not a lot.
The writing was simple and often superficial most of the book. Further, I would describe the writing at times as immature. Statements like “true dat” and “holy hotness!” were not for me. Additionally, there really was no depth to anything or anyone. Nothing was explained about the world or how vampires and zombies existed. It just was what it was. Now, I am not someone who needs a whole bucket load of world building, but some context here would’ve been really beneficial. At the end of the book, there was a note by the author stating this was a standalone book in the same world as another book or possibly books of hers. It is possible these other books that have been published have the world and magical system details I was looking for, but there could’ve at least been a review of that in this book since it is advertised as a standalone. No matter, I understood everything that was happening.
There also a lot of telling all throughout. Sentences of “this happened and then that happened,” with no actual paragraphs about the events themselves. I will say that the trial/games had more description about what happened, but when it came to the characters themselves and their relationships, we really didn’t have any depth.
One of my favorite parts of the story was the MFC‘s growth. She started as a doormat and was written as if she were in high school. Her father was a prejudiced jerk and verbally abused her, yet she sent him food and wanted to pay for him to go on a vacation. Also, she had a picture of her dead mother on her nightstand at her cousin’s house, which made her cousin upset, so the MFC hid it. When talking to men she acted like a 16 year old. She was so desperate to find a soulmate, it was quite pathetic for half of the book. For example, she met a vampire for maybe three minutes and then after she believed it was fate, and she started having daydreams of riding horses with this guy in their HEA. She described herself and this thought about horseback riding as being a hopeless romantic, I saw it as silly. She then had a thought about how she was over college boys and wanted a man, but I was thinking what a hypocrite she was because she was definitely thinking, feeling, and behaving like a juvenile girl.
As the book progressed, the MFC started to develop a backbone. It was nice to see her have major growth. She started to actually stand up for herself, often. She also had intellect and knew how to play the game. She could manipulate people that thought they were manipulating her. She was able to think of strategy and how to win a long-term. Additionally, she was quite strong and able to defend herself. It was really fantastic to see her continue to be herself, which was a kind, compassionate, and empathetic person, all while being conniving and standing up for herself.
The MMC initially was an arrogant dud. He had absolutely zero depth to him. I know I mentioned that earlier, but I just wanted to emphasize how flat this character was. I really wish the author took more time to develop who these characters were, especially the MMC. We were told a grain of why MMC was wanting to kill the MFC, with very little description or rationale. I know we got a little bit more at the end, but it was still really flat. As the book progressed, he got a tiny bit of depth, which I appreciated. Something that threw me was that I thought this book would be all about him tormenting the MFC, which he did a little bit. But really, it did not happen a lot. Rather, it was the MFC tormenting him. It was awesome to see her do that, but the book didn’t fit the exactly what I thought it would be based on the synopsis.
What was fun about the MMC was that he could see the MFC for who she truly was, someone who could stand up for herself, which he really appreciated and was turned on by. He was also excited that she was resilient and fought back.
I would say the best part of this book was the game show action scenes mixed with romance and character growth. The MFC‘s growth from a doormat to a strong, less ignorant woman was great to watch. Also, seeing the MMC develop into a much more thoughtful and less narrow minded male was great. I really did like that they got together, their flirty banter was fun! Despite all of this, the MC’s went from enemies, to having a few moments together, to “your mine,” “she’s my forever,” and “I love you.” The “I love you” came out of no where and I really didn’t believe it. What?! The MFC consistently said she was going to end it with the MMC, but of course she didn’t. We were then told (rarely shown) they spent a few nights talking and then bam they were in love. What?! This didn’t make sense to me.
Overall, despite the limitations, I did have a good time and enjoyed the story.

This was a fun read! Zombies, check. Vampires, check. Magical humans, check. I loved the reality show plot and romance subplot. I appreciated the banter and found family vibes. This definitely reads as a YA novel and although it’s not part of the Spellcaster duology, I think reading those 2 books first would’ve helped me understand this book’s world a little better. Joni was a great FMC and I appreciated reading her growth. There were some twists and turns that helped me keep reading. 3.5 stars!

This was EVERYTHING I wanted an more! It was so much fun! I’m obsessed with it survivor and vampires, so of course I LOVED it!! The chronic illness rep was done so well with the FMC. And the MMC, he was so funny, he had me giggling and kicking my feet. And he knows how to YEARN!

A vampire romance that is filled with tension crossed with a survivor style show where they can win immortality at the end!
Joni is one of the world’s fastest human spellcasters, but when she receives the news that she has a brain tumor and less than a year to live, not even her magic can save her. Sterling recently became the leader/master of his vampire clan and vows to get back at those who killed his brother by killing Joni in revenge. When they cross paths she outsmarts him, but ends up signing up for immortality island, a reality show where she could win immortality as a vampire, but he ends up as one of the masters who’s clan she could pick from. They spend time going back and forth as she tries to make allies with other casters in order to win, and they go from wanting to kill each other to maybe wanting something more.
There was plenty of excitement in this book between the vampire romance and all the challenges Joni had to face, I couldn’t decide if I enjoyed the tension and romance forming between them more or if each competition and challenge closer to the end kept me more hooked into the book. It felt like I was reading a high stakes survivor where the challenges have a bit of magic and are much more dangerous which made them all the more exciting! There was plenty of banter and will they won’t they between the pair and while they started off hating each other, sometimes that leads to the strongest connection. I can’t wait to read more from this world and learn more about the other characters surrounding this pair! My rating 4.5/5!

“Murder wasn’t part of the job requirement…” Talk about a great opening!! This was a really easy and enjoyable read. This had several of my favourite tropes including enemies to lovers (with GREAT BANTER!!!), found family, dual POV & a trial/games setting.
The pacing really fluctuated throughout, but it definitely picked up and started to find its rhythm when the trial began. I wasn’t aware of this book, although a standalone takes place in a pre-existing universe for this author - this could be accredited to why I wanted more world building and struggled a bit with the lack of context. In saying that it was easy enough to figure out and I didn’t really feel like I was missing anything.

I LOOOOOVE THIS BOOK!
Big fan of this story and the world. I like the magical reality tv competition concept and the characters too. Really well written I got hooked right from the start. The book can be read even if you did not read Spellcaster Wild Card and All Star but if you did it's just more special I think. This story contains a lot of swoon worthy moment and laugh out loud moments but also some moments that got me choked up with all the feels. I just love it!

I was not ready to say goodbye to the Spellcaster world or to Joni, so obviously I jumped at the chance to be able to go back.
From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked. The magical competition was thrilling, the island setting was so much fun, and the cast of characters kept me guessing at every turn. Immortality Island is a fun read, a bit like sitting down with some buttery popcorn and watching your favourite reality tv show!
The blurb and marketing quotes made me go in expecting a plot with high stakes, and characters succumbing to deadly trials, with an underlying romance subplot, but in actuality, it was a lot more fluffy. I didn't fear for the characters at all (failing the trials for instance meant walking the plank... and swimming away) and I wasn't sat on the edge of my seat throughout the read. But...was it a lovely, sweet read that you could take to the beach and flick through? Yes!
It was a sweet story, about a girl Joni, who has had a hard life and been dealt many a difficult card, and about her overcoming challenging obstacles whilst finding love. The challenges themselves, were inventive and fun to read, and I really enjoyed the magical spin. I especially liked the traditional magical vibes with poetic spells and thought this was another cute touch. There was an element of "found family" with Joni working with the other contestants, and it did feel like I was sat eating a big block of my favourite chocolate - nothing shocked me, but it was very pleasant.
My only bugbear, and this is perhaps an issue from me as a reader and my personal tastes, rather than a criticism on the book itself, is that I didn't believe the romance subplot - I felt that Joni and Sterling went from enemies to in love rather quickly and the epligoue was rather a surprise. I liked Joni though, and I hope that she has finally found the one right for her and Sterling isn't just another bad choice (especially as the epilogue made it rather final!).
~I think this book has the potential to be a easy 4/5 star reads for many readers! In the words of Hozier, it was just a bit too sweet for me, I take my trials (whiskey) dark (neat).

I had so much fun with this book! Joni joins a tv game show to win immortality as a vampire, so she won't die from a brain tumor.
Is this book written perfectly? No. For example there are some moments I had no clue how much time had gone by, some things went too fast to be realistic, and a lot was predictable. But this book is clearly written to entertain and that it absolutely DOES. It's a very fun, quick and easy feel good read! So if you want to be critical and read a perfect book, skip this one. If you want to be entertained and you love romantasy, go pick it up asap!
The main characters all have exactly enough background story to understand them and feel for them. The background stories are even interesting enough to raise some curiosity into other books written in this world!
The game element is done best of all. Especially if you watch this kind of show (we love to watch Expeditie Robinson, the Dutch version of Survivor) you will recognise everything! It's all in there. The games, the group dynamics, the personal struggles, the (lack of) food..

I knew it from the moment I laid eyes on it, that I am going to love this book and while it definitely was different than I expected, I had a wonderful time with it. Action, vampires and a reality competition on an island?! I couldn't imagine anything more perfect in a dark romantasy. Ohh and the banter was so fun! I absolutely loved Joni and Sterling, their dynamic were brilliant. I absolutely loved stepping through the pages of this book and seeing how their relationship bloomed.
If you're looking for a unique experience, I highly recommend picking up this magical novel!

I was gifted an eARC for my review. This is a great continuation of the Spellcaster duet. I love this world and the characters so much. The chemistry and banter is veryentertaining. It’s a light book, perfect for summer reading.

This was such a fast, fun read. We have a Survivor-style reality show where spellcasting hopefuls compete for the chance at immortality, as the winner gets to choose to join a vampire clan. Each contestant has their own reason for wanting to be turned, but Joni, specifically, is living with a terminal brain tumor that could rupture at any time, so for her it is truly life or death, something made even more dangerous when you add a vampire master intent on making sure she doesn't survive to the end of the competition - at least, at first...
I loved the various relationships in this book: the one between Joni and her cousin, Haylee, those between the contestants, and the romantic relationship between Joni and Sterling. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Joni and Corey, especially as the story progressed. And certain characters certainly grew on me, from Felicity to Christle and PJ. And I appreciated that the story focused on the social aspect of the game as much as the physical challenges.
This is a dual-POV book, and having the chance to see Sterling's perspective made it that much more enjoyable. The banter was entertaining, the challenges were a perfect mix of fun and danger, and the heartfelt moments were that much sweeter against the backdrop of the competition.
I thought the scene with the shark tooth would be my favorite of the book, only for the scene with the snakes in the cabana to top it! Joni's character was so fun to read, and I truly felt myself rooting for her to win. I would have enjoyed it if this were a duology, where book 1 ended at the end of the competition and book 2 was us dealing with the aftermath in Sterling's clan and his attempt to wrestle back control, as it did feel wrapped up a little too easily at the end, but it was still a sweet ending, nonetheless! This is a world I would love to come back to, and lucky for me, I had no idea about the previous books the author has written about these characters. I will definitely have to find and read them!

However, her affiliation with her famous zombie cousin and her affiliated powerful clan makes her a target for a vengeful but handsome vampire.
This novel is a fun read because of its premise. Its essentially an enemies to lovers romantasy that doesnt take itself too seriously.
I mean, the vampire fails to kill her before she signs up to be on a reality show and then decides his next step is to apply to be a judge on said show to try again. This course of action is essentially the kind of light read and vibe youre getting yourself into when reading this. It is a comfort read that is relatively fast paced for those looking for a bit of absurdist escapism in the romantasy realm of the supernatural.
The reality show element of this show provides an interesting element and tension to the romance plotline, with Joni juggling playing the physical and social game of being on the show, as well as the cat and mouse game with the vampire out to kill her. What kept me reading was really how both her and her love interest were teetering between love and hate, and then how they were conceivably going to fool the other contestants and the viewers that she wasn’t ‘cheating’ to be a finalist (lol; not spoilers).
Overall, I enjoyed my reading experience but the twist is so silly I just think its funny (in a good way). It wasnt super impactful but I did appreciate how this novel got me out of my reading slump a tiny bit.

Wow. Nikki Jefford has completely outdone herself with Immortality Island! As a standalone in the Spellcaster universe, this book grabbed me from the very first page and didn't let go.
The premise is brilliant: Joni, a human dealing with a devastating medical diagnosis, risks everything to audition for a Survivor-style magical competition where the ultimate prize is immortality. Enter Sterling—a lethal vampire master whose literal job is to end her life. The tension between them is electric!

The Competition World-Building: I was utterly obsessed with how the competition was written. The challenges, the distinct casts of characters, the shifting alliances, and the brutal betrayals kept me on the edge of my seat. It felt like watching the highest-stakes reality show imaginable, but with magic.
Top-Tier Tropes: Dual POV, enemies-to-lovers, and forced proximity? Yes, please. Jefford balances them all flawlessly.
Incredible Chemistry: Watching Sterling—who is supposed to be her executioner—be completely drawn to Joni's sheer strength and resilience was beautiful. Their slow burn and eventual fall is everything a paranormal romance lover could ask for.

I absolutely enjoyed this stand alone story that follows the Spellcaster series but holds it's own as a gorgeous spin off. Following Joni as she fights with everything she has for survival and the hope of love with a rocky, life threatening twist and exciting, sizzling enemies to lovers romance. Humans, vampires and wizards.. what an exciting world. This story felt very unique and unlike anything I've come across, very thrilling in every way.
This book had everything I wanted in a great story. Perfect balance of danger, excitement, romance, lasting friendships, risk and entertainment with lots of wit and laughter that shaped into a story I couldn't put down. I was hooked with fantastic storytelling and imagery I felt the sea wind in my hair and the sand between my toes.
You might want a Pina Colada once you embark on the boat to Immortality Island for this wonderful story.

There are parts of this story so beautifully written it was an experience all on its own. When Sterling is describing Alaska, wow.
The dynamic between Serling and Joni was such a vibe from when they were trying to kill each other and on down to their relationship pivoting.
The competition was fun and I appreciate the author on creativity to keep that part from becoming monotonous.
Something that really was a bummer for me was the lack of world building. As in there isn’t any at all. I did note this is a standalone within the Spellcaster world. I haven’t read that duology so maybe the world building was there but this being listed as a standalone should at least paint that picture for us a little bit. Vampires, zombies, werewolves and magic all exist. There are even laws putting parameters on them punishable by extermination but how, why? It just takes away a little of the depth of that world for me.
Overall it was a fun read, maybe would have appreciated it better if I’d have read the Spellcaster books but I still enjoyed it.

The dynamic between Serling and Joni was such a vibe from when they were trying to kill each other and on down to their relationship pivoting.
The competition was fun and I appreciate the author on creativity to keep that part from becoming monotonous.
Something that really was a bummer for me was the lack of world building. As in there isn’t any at all. I did note this is a standalone within the Spellcaster world. I haven’t read that duology so maybe the world building was there but this being listed as a standalone should at least paint that picture for us a little bit. Vampires, zombies, werewolves and magic all exist. There are even laws putting parameters on them punishable by extermination but how, why? It just takes away a little of the depth of that world for me.
Overall it was a fun read, maybe would have appreciated it better if I’d have read the Spellcaster books but I still enjoyed it.

Hunting her was meant to be easy… until desire got in the way.
This new adult dark romantasy has a real world contemporary reality TV game show competition with survivor meets fear factor vibes with the prize of being turned into an immortal vampire, zombies and magic, enemies to lovers, found family and dual POV, and an FMC who learns that she has a backbone while the MMC has protective instincts that break all the rules. Not to mention the romance is a main part of the plot with minimal spice and a HEA to round it out.
Although this is a standalone, it does relate to the Spellcaster world by this author which may have more world building that would help with better understanding of this story. I do wish I would have read Spellcaster first so that I could truly enjoy the story as intended by the author. The writing was good and the story was a pleasant read. The FMC character arc was my favorite of the story, following her journey of standing up for herself and how the MMC enjoyed watching her do it.

Okay, so I totally loved this book! Yeah, it took me a bit longer to finish, but I didn't want to rush through it. This is my first time reading anything by this author. I do want to go back and read "Spellcaster Wild Card" to get more backstory on a couple of characters, no spoilers here.
Joni is a lonely human who can cast magic, and she gets some really devastating news. Now she gets this idea to join a reality show where if you win, you can become a vampire. Joni doesn't tell anyone her news; the only one who knows is the TV show host. On top of that, she's being hunted down for revenge. Sterling, OMG, he's one vampire who doesn't give up! I absolutely love him.
Now, I don't watch a lot of TV, but I felt like I was watching these different teams try and win the challenges. There's a part, without giving too much away, that kind of reminded me of a certain movie. The spice in this is done so well; I love the slow burn, chef's kiss!

Nikki Jefford has delivered the perfect addition to her Spellcaster world with her new standalone novel, Immortality Island. I absolutely loved this book. It was such a joy to revisit the characters I fell in love with in the original Spellcaster books and see where they are a decade later—Haylee, Alexander, and, of course, Joni. From the very first chapter to the last, I was completely obsessed. With a thrilling new competition, a fresh setting, and new characters to love, question, and even hate, the story pulled me in and never let go. Joni’s journey—from facing the trauma of a fatal diagnosis, to becoming a contestant on her favorite reality show, to discovering something she did not even realize she was searching for—was emotional, exciting, and impossible to put down. The twists, the tension, and those unforgettable “no he didn’t” moments kept me reading late into the night because I did not want the excitement to end. I truly hope this is not the last story we get from this amazing world Nikki has created.

I loved Joni's story in Immortality Island. It was such a treat to get a legacy novel so soon after the main series finished in 2025. Normally, authors make you wait several years for the next generation. Not Nikki Jefford. We get glimpses of some of the original characters we love within the first couple chapters.
So, Immortality Island takes place about 8-10 years after Spellcaster Wild Card and All-Stars depending on if you count from the beginning or the end of the duology. Joni is grown up, in college, and finding her way while on borrowed time. You immediately recognize her innocence from the first books, but she comes into her own as she grows throughout this book and fights to save her life anyway she can. Truly a formidable heroine like her cousin.
There are moments that will be confusing to new readers about the world and Haylee's place in Joni's life, so to those I implore to read this book with an open mind, and if you want those other questions answered, be sure to read Haylee's duology — Spellcaster Wild Card and Spellcaster All-Stars.

I was thoroughly surprised by how much I enjoyed this fast-paced read. As a fan of reality shows like Survivor and Fear Factor, this book caught my attention after I'd just finished binge-watching Survivor, so the premise had me hooked from the start.
After Joni discovers she has brain cancer, she's not ready to die so young. Her solution? Enter the Immortality Island competition, a deadly game much like our real-world Survivor, except the grand prize is immortality as a vampire.
I'm not often drawn into contemporary fantasy, but this story had me flying through the pages with its easy prose and dual POV between Joni and Sterling, a vampire driven by revenge. Their dynamic definitely had me kicking my feet and squeeling about "vampire speed". Note to the author: That was feral! 🤭🤭
I was so intrigued by the side characters and the other competitions mentioned throughout the story that I'll definitely be going back to read the Spellcaster books.

This 3rd installment of Spellcaster series takes you on an adventure of magic vs survival. Only one can claim the prize of immortality. This 400-page enemies to lovers will have you turning the pages quicker than you know it.
Joni (MFC)- love seeing the growth in her character since Spellcaster Wildcards. The book opens with her facing the challenge of having a brain tumor. To her trying to survive many obstacles.
Sterling (MMC)- in it to revenge his brother’s death but gets intrigued by Joni.
Delightful book. I know like many survivors shows there is not much character building to get you rooting for any person or power couple especially with elimination happening so quickly. But team starfish all the way. Cannot wait to see where the adventure continues.

Especially once Joni got to the Island and the competition started. Before that, I was struggling a bit to find a way to relate to her character, or to care about Sterling, who was coming across a tad incompetent for a minute.
But once the competition started, the story feels like it got into its groove, and so did Joni and Sterling. Once that happened, I was rooting for the both of them, and I loved how Sterling was all "screw the rules" on multiple occasions all in service of protecting/saving Joni.
I hadn't realized when I signed up for this ARC on Netgalley that it was part of a larger universe, but now I want to know Haylee's story and experience more of the wider world, since it feels lived in and with rules and a history just there to discover.
There's mild spice, and a HEA, so I am very satisfied!

I actually didn't know this book had any books before it when I started it. Never even heard of Spellcaster before finding this book by pure and utter chance. I'm glad I did! I quickly fell in love with this concept and this world.
I'm a sucker for vampire type books, so naturally before even reading the blub I see the title of the book "Immortality Island" and go ' I need to know more.' And here we are. I loved everything about this world. I now find myself wanting to go into the prequel to this to know more about Joni and Haylee's story.
Sterling is by far my favourite character of the book. His journey with Joni is both hilarious at times and honestly very sweet. I know next to nothing about reality shows. They aren't my cup of tea exactly, though I truly did enjoy the concept that was behind Immortality Island.

I was so excited to return to the Spellcaster world! Immortality Island is a whole new competition with magic and Survivor-style challenges on a tropical island. This one follows Joni Mullins, who is now in college! ( she was a kid on spellcaster/supporting character).
I had so much fun with this one! If you love enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, forbidden romance, and plenty of banter, Immortality Island delivers. Sterling and Joni have incredible chemistry, and I loved watching their relationship evolve from reluctant enemies to something much deeper. Their push-and-pull kept me turning the pages, and the ending was so satisfying!
I am a huge fan of Spellcaster, i highly recommend you check it out!!!
