Thank you Tessy Braun for the ARC of your first foray into the thriller genre, Ridge of Betrayal.
This story is a multi POV following two couples who have travelled to the lake district to scale one of the trickiest Lake District paths. They are carrying a lot of baggage with them and as the title suggests, betrayal is truly the theme of this thriller. What will be discovered and what consequences will there be for them all?
I really enjoyed this book overall. The settings were well done, including some very good references to Portsmouth which as someone who grew up near there, were accurate and well researched. I did feel that the book could have been shorter by a few chapters at the end. I felt that the final story could have been condensed to keep with the pacing overall however this did not detract too much from the enjoyment. The backstories for the characters were well done and well organised with us learning what we needed to at the right time. The plot was good and believable, though definitely heed the trigger warnings as it's extremely dark in places especially with the sexual violence. My biggest bug bear which I have with a lot of authors is accents. There was no true representation of the German, the Pompey or the northern accents of the characters which meant it all was read in a generic accent for me which was a shame given the varied areas the characters came from.
For a first jump into the genre from an established indie author this was great. I really enjoyed how much thought was put into the characters and their backstories and how it all twisted together in both expected and unexpected ways. I was also really glad that for once the bad guy got their just desserts in a poetic way. So often the deaths in thrillers are justified when a "bad guy" gets killed by a protagonist but in this book that was not the case and I really appreciated this.
Loved this Tessy and can't wait to see what you do next for the genre!
* Review of ARC reader copy received from the author. *
The story starts with Monika and Ralph who are introduced as the novel’s first couple. I loved that the book was set in Cumbria, as someone who was born there, I know the locations well. The couples were a contrast to each other, and the book was an interesting character study. Tabby and Seb are the ‘posher’ couple, with Tabby being quite materialistic.
Each chapter is written from a different character’s point of view, which reminded me of Daisy Jones and the Six and I think the book might work even better as an audiobook with multiple voice actors. It was nicely written with good pace, and I enjoyed reading a book in a completely different genre by Tessy Braun.
It was also refreshing to see the ‘intrusive thoughts’ OCD being portrayed in the novel. Hollywood tends to only show the washing hand kind, so it was helpful.
I’d highly recommend this book, it’s the perfect length and well written. Be warned that it does take a really dark turn at around the page 200 mark, but the novel has a plot that is guaranteed to keep you hooked!
If you like fast paced psychological thrillers then this is the book for you. Despite being a relatively short read, it packed a punch with both the characters and the detailed descriptions of the mountains which had me googling images of the range so I could see them for myself. All the MMC were instantly dislikable and even after reading about Seb’s twisted childhood I struggled to warm to him. The story is told from all four characters POV and goes back and forth between the past and present time and I literally raced through and read this in 24 hours. There were a lot of triggers warnings so make sure you check them before diving in. I received this as an ARC but am voluntarily reviewing and all thoughts are my own.
Tessy Braun doesn’t just write a thriller, she drags you into the fells, kicks dirt in your mouth, and asks if you still trust your hiking buddies.
This book was not what I expected. Each character had their own mental and emotional mountain to climb while physically climbing.
Learning the characters’ backstories and traumas helped me connect to them in a way I didn’t see coming. They’re messy, angry, and real. You understand why they make the ugly choices they do, even when you want to scream at them not to.
Every one of them ties into each other’s lives in ways that’ll make you wince - but in a good way. The whole "Luna-gate" situation? Took me by complete surprise.
Going by that ending, I am desperately hoping there will be a book 2 and a POV from Theo!
If a fast paced pyscological thriller is your type of read, then this book is definitely the one! I genuinely disliked the MMC's from the beginning, especially Seb🤬 I loved how Tessy described the mountains in this book, it made me feel like I was doing this climb with the characters themselves! I loved the whole dual POV between the couples & how we went from the present to the past to get some backstories to their lives to, I'll definitely be reading more💜

Two couples, one summit, four up, three down...
I really enjoyed this book a lot. It’s a Psychological Thriller.
Review: Ridge of Betrayal by Tessy Braun Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars for fans of the genre!
I just finished Ridge of Betrayal by Tessy Braun, and it is a dark, tangled ride through the mountains. While the scenery is beautiful, the characters are another story—literally everyone is toxic. This book follows two couples, Monika and Ralph, and Tabby and Sebastian, whose lives are deeply intertwined in ways that are messy, complicated, and often unsettling.
Fair warning: These are not "likable" characters in the traditional sense; everyone operates in shades of gray (and sometimes much darker). However, if your reading taste includes morally complex characters and intense, thriller-style elements, this will grab your attention.
Why It Stands Out Responsible Storytelling: I appreciated that the author provides clear trigger warnings. They are there for a reason, as the book leans heavily into psychological tension and disturbing behavior.
Ambitious Premise: There is an impressive layering of suspense, secrets, and past trauma. At times, it feels like multiple psychological thrillers woven into one.
A Bold Debut: This is a strong start for an author’s first thriller. Braun shows a clear willingness to take risks and explore darker themes, and her background in poetry shines through in her writing voice.
My Perspective As a member of the ARC team and a long-time fan of Braun’s poetry—such as The Midnight Masquerade, In the Little Woodland Clearing, and White Horses—this was a major departure for me. Since thrillers are outside my usual comfort zone, the "darkness" took me back at first. However, art is a matter of perspective, and I believe fans of psychological horror will engage with this even more easily than I did.
With some refinement in structure, I can see this style evolving into something incredibly powerful. If you’re in the mood for a mountain-set story packed with psychological intensity, this is worth adding to your list!
Favorite Quotes "The worst thing about it, the part that made him really sick, was not only did he enjoy the process, but additionally, killing her had turned him on."
"He didn’t even feel like he was a bad person. Not really. Most of the time he was ordinary."
"Even at age ten, Ralph was described as 'furiously scooping up' frogs to kill them... he knew killing the froglets was an awful thing to do." (Note: This reminded me of Dean Koontz’s The Vision—a high compliment for the horror elements!)
"The pool was tranquil, but the red lighting from beneath reminded Monika of blood."
Summary of Author's Other Works (My 5-Star Favorites): The Midnight Masquerade: An enchanting poetic story celebrating community. I’d love to see this as a graphic novel!
In the Little Woodland Clearing: Folklore poems about mischievous fae.
White Horses, Green Fields and Blue Skies: A collection of stunning beauty.

From the very first page the author's writing had me hooked and I kept reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. There were so many twists and turns that it had me guessing until the end. Even though there were some sensitive subjects they were handled with care. This was such a brilliantly written novel, I definitely recommend it to other readers and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💖 Thank you to the author for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Book Review: Ridge of Betrayal by Tessy Braun ⭐️⭐️⭐️ RELEASES ON KINDLE TOMORROW
It is ironic that this novel culminates in a train station because its story progression reminded me of the way a train progresses on its journey. There were slow moving, explorative sections of narrative that served to create depth to the characters Monika, Seb, Tabby, and Ralph. These punctuated more accelerated chapters were the proverbial train careered forward at a frantic and deadly pace.
Ridge of Betrayal by Tessy Braun presents what appears to be a simple tale of the lives of two couples, both destined to conquer the heights and dangers of Blencathra.
In truth, the underlying principle of the novel is much darker and forces the notion that all humans have a dark side that, when pushed, comes to the for.
The events, slow in their arrival, culminate in a fate versus karma scenario that ultimately brings all the threads to a surprising finish line.
Whilst for me, the gradual progression felt alien, as someone who thrives on an instant thrust of action to set the scene, I found myself satisfied with the outcome at the end of the book.
The author's diversion into a new genre is one that I am sure will provide growth and expansion as she hones her new found skills of thriller writing and this novel has created the ideal stepping stone to future success.
I feel privileged to have had access to an eArc of the novel and thank the author for this opportunity to share in her new venture.
Those of you who like slow-burn, twisted, and unexpected threads will no doubt enjoy this new release.
I don't tend to read dark psychological thrillers, but as someone willing to step outside of my paranormal & monster romance comfort zone, I was happy to accept an advance copy of this ebook from the author, Tessy.
I've heard people say that scaling a mountain changes you, but when these two couples, Monika & Ralph, and Tabatha & Sebastian, decide to hike up Blencathra's summit (which is an actual mountain in England's Lake District), nothing could prepare them for what lay ahead.
As well as following the two couple's journey up the mountain, this story is also told in flashbacks, some going as far back to childhood. It definitely helps the reader understand what led each person to where they are now, and works well for this story.
Monika quickly became my favourite character, and I loved the fact that even as a travel influencer, she could set her phone aside and live in the moment. Without going into spoilers, the ending did kinda knock me for six, and I absolutely did NOT see that coming!!
As a dark tale, there are some very distressing scenes within this story, and I highly recommend checking out the trigger warnings before making your own way to the summit. Although for seasoned dark psychological thriller fans, I'm sure you'll take this hike in your stride.
I received an ARC of this ebook from the author, and I'm voluntarily leaving this review.
I was very lucky to be given an advanced copy of this book I am really glad to be chosen to read it. A departure from my usual genre of fantasy and sci-fi, I had not read a thriller for a while. I am so glad I read this book. I devoured it in 2 sittings, it's not a super long book, but it's long enough to tell a complete stand alone story with plenty of twists and turns. The story follows 2 couples, both with relational (and personal) issues. It follows their trip up a treacherous mountain where truths begin to unfold. The characters are complex, some have tragic backstories and others just have literal skeletons in the closet. It is well worth a read if you like thrillers, suspense and a "whodunit" vibe. Some of the chapters are genuinely heartbreaking, exploring child abuse and neglect and others leave you feeling on edge. I read this book a few weeks ago and occasionally think about the characters now. Tessy has a lovely way of writing and I really enjoyed this book and it had me on the edge of my seat. Thanks again for letting me read an advanced copy.
I wanted to know what happens next, where will the characters end up, will anyone solve the murder? Who did it?
As an ARC reader, I had early access to the book - I focused on the characters and moral dilemmas described in the book. The narrator makes judgements I would perhaps stay clear of myself, as the world is never black and white, but I found it fascinating to read of various quirks and thought processes that the main characters were experiencing. Tessy touched on very important issues and lived experiences of sexual, physical and and emotional abuse that may be triggering for many people. She skilfully navigates through family and wider support that may be so beneficial for a young person and later in adulthood.
All this is wrapped up in beautiful scenery of the Lake District’s Blecanthra with her ridges and fells. Reading the book, I started to look forward to visiting the places Tessy described so beautifully, to embark on (perhaps?) the same walks as the main characters.
I was lucky to be an early reader for Tessys latest book Having read and enjoyed Tessys other books I was excited to read something darker from her and I wasn't disappointed. This book hooks you in from the first page and quickly reels you in. The 4 characters are revealed to us as they climb the iconic Blencathra mountain in the Lake District national park. Tessy weavers a tale as the climbers weave their way up the steep and dangerous mountain. I love the way the book takes us back to important times in each of the characters lives as we discover disturbing, upsetting and at times horrifying accounts of their individual pasts. How the two couples, who are strangers, lives interlock on one fateful day is such clever writing and I found that I couldn't stop reading until I knew every twist and turn of their unsettling journey. If you enjoy a dark thrilling read, this one is definitely for you, atmospheric from the start, a real nail biting page turner.
I read through this one and found myself skimming at times as I struggled to stay fully engaged, and had mixed feelings overall.
The premise is dark and interesting, with interconnected storylines, toxic relationships, and highstakes moments that tie the characters together. However, the story leans heavily into backstory early on, and the frequent shifts in timeline and perspective made parts of it feel confusing and harder to follow.
I also appreciated the inclusion of trigger warnings, but the tone and intensity of certain scenes felt more abrupt and graphic than I expected, which made it harder to stay fully immersed.
As the story progresses, the events become increasingly dramatic, which may work for some readers, but it started to feel a bit over-the-top for my personal taste. Overall, it didn’t fully come together for me in terms of clarity and engagement.
This is a short thriller (less than 300 pages) and this was sent to me by the author so thank-you! This follows four different characters as they embark on a hike. They all have hidden secrets as they walk (two couples that don’t know each other!) The journey starts as four but only one survives the story. This was generally fast paced, and there were a few little eggs dropped within the story to keep you reading! It was easy to read, I did read this pretty much in a day! The reason I didn’t think it hit the five star was purely personal preference. Some of the chapters were long and I would have liked to explore the plot a little more towards the end. This is perfect for those that love a slow burn thriller with a lot of character. Overall, well written and an enjoyable read.
A brave debut of a psychological thriller. The author creates a great atmosphere with story set in the mountains, and the overall story is engaging.
However, although I love thrillers, I’m less of a fan of psychological – but wanted to read this, having read this authors’ previous books, both of which I enjoyed.
There’s a helpfulwarning about the disturbing content of the story which is needed for those readers who are easily triggered.
Personally I didn’t find that either of the couples had any redeemable characteristics, so I didn’t connect with any of them. In places, for me, reading the backstories interrupted the flow of the main stories for me.
Ralph was for me, the most convincing character, and very well written.
I am a SUCKER for a thriller and this book was definitely up my street. The way the characters were written was really interesting, I like that they all had hidden secrets and pasts that impacted the people they turned in to. Whilst I did predict some of the things that happened, there were some twists that I didn't expect e.g. the ending and what happened to Monika (I did kinda want her to get away with it all!) The only reason I've rated this 4 stars, instead of 5, is that I felt some parts were rushed e.g. Tabatha deciding to work together with Monika to kill Sebastian. Overall i did enjoy the story and would recommend it!

I've read a couple of Tessy's previous books and I was intrigued how she would manage the transition to psychological thrillers. There was no need for concern!
What a great story! I was instantly sucked in by the beautifully described landscapes of the Lakes District. It always makes books more real and personal when I can relate to the setting.
The thrills and overall mysteries started early and continued throughout. The characters were colourful and well developed. There was a huge coincidence in the novel that pulled me out of the main story a bit, but this was my only gripe.
Overall, a captivating thriller that had such a stunning backdrop. Beautifully written too!
Wow…this one was a tough read for me. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, as many of them made choices that were hard to understand or sympathize with. The story leans heavily into darker themes, and some of the violence felt quite graphic and, at times, overwhelming.
That said, I did appreciate the shifting timelines and multiple narrators—they kept me engaged, even if they were occasionally a bit confusing to follow.
Overall, I think this book just wasn’t the right fit for me. It may appeal more to readers who enjoy the darker, horror-leaning side of thrillers, but I’ve learned that this might not be my preferred direction within the genre.
The story is an intense, fast paced thriller. I enjoyed the character development and the twist and turns and found it easy to read and easy to follow without being overly simplistic.
The story covers lots of different emotions and experiences, many of them seem realistic and relatable, despite the dark nature of the book, and due to this it keeps you wanting to read more.
Overall, an engrossing read, which dealt with potentially triggering topics in a sensitive way whilst making it feel realistic. There are plenty of twists and turns which helps with wanting to read on.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in one day. Every single character in this book had huge flaws (some worse than others) and even though Seb was a really crappy boyfriend I really dont think he deserved his fate.
I also really appreciated how the author portrayed different mental disorders, particularly OCD. It highlighted the reality of intense intrusive thoughts, rather than relying on the common stereotype of obsessive cleaning.

This is Tessy's first thriller novel and I LOVED IT. It's my favourite book of hers, in fact.
Page 1 is straight after the murder so this isn't a spoiler!
Using present-day and past incidents interwoven in the book, the reader uncovers secrets and motivations for the main characters. It's not just words Tessy employs to move the story along: some chapters are long and lanuid, with a sense of security; others are fast and urgent, keeping pace with the storyline.
What can i say about this book. It has more twists and turns than the Nurburgring. It will keep you on the edge discovering the history of the two couples in this disturbing story.
