Six months after Micah Brachon's abduction, little has changed. He spends his time building projects in his workshop, and trying not to think about Raine Ashmead, the Shira half-blood who walked into his life, and his heart.
But when his brother Liam is attacked inside the walls of the castle, their temporary reprieve is over. A faceless group wants power, and will use any means necessary to achieve it.
Liam discovers this after he is ambushed and taken from the life he knows. Thrown into a world where the rules are profoundly different, where he no longer has control over his future, he must adapt, or die.
With Liam gone, Micah steps into his place, uncertain of his ability to do so, and far from ready. He needs to figure out who he can trust, and quickly, before the traitor among them shows their hand, destroying everyone he loves.

Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper.
She grew up losing herself in fantasy worlds, and now creates her own worlds, infusing them with adventure and magic.
When she's not writing, she travels to places that inspire her, having her own adventures, and reads pretty much anything she can get her hands on.
There ~ I got the official biography out of the way. I love to write, and yes, I have been doing it most of my life. I've made up stories in my head for as long as I can remember, and I’m thrilled to be able to bring those stories to life, and share them with you.

This is one of the #SPFBO books I had on my list and it's one I started after finishing up some more heavy stories so it was a relief to find that though this has heavy themes (slavery, torture etc.) it actually reads like a fairly fast-paced and light fantasy.
We follow one small Dukedom which is currently ruled over by Liam. He's a good ruler by most people's standards, but there are other factions who think the time is ripe for some radical changes and they have already struck against Liam and his brother by abducting his younger step-brother, Micah.
Micah is an inventor, he spends a lot of his time creating new things and being alone in his workshop or out with his fire drake. His latest invention is a pair of untested wings and it's got him and his brother (who he is good friends with as well as family) pretty excited. However, when the enemies strike from within their very own walls and Liam is not only attacked but abducted it falls to Micah to take over the ruling of the Dukedom.
Micah is a 'cripple'. His time being in the care of the enemy was dark and painful and he knows that he's not the ideal candidate to rule, but he also knows he will never give up on rescuing his brother and he must keep the rule for him. His mother and other people around him offer contrasting advice, and it's a battle for him to even train at sword-play, let alone to rule.
What I liked about this story was the pacing and the plot. It's a fun story which has some darker themes but feels simple and easy to enjoy. Sometimes I like just being thrown into a classic fantasy world because it leaves more time to have a fun adventure and develop the characters a bit.
This is a pretty short book so I felt like the ending actually cut off a bit early for me and I did want to see more. It's not quite 300 pages so I read this easily over a few hours, and I definitely enjoyed it.
I would say of you're looking for a light but fun story then this one may well be the one to try. 3.5*s from me in the end :D
