No restraining order will stop Dare from protecting Teal.
The blackouts started happening when Teal was eight. There are long periods of her youth she doesn't remember. She has woken up in strange places, feeling disoriented and unaware of how long she's been out.
After two years abroad attending a private school and sessions with a top-notch psychiatrist, she's been deemed cured. The blackouts have ceased, or so Teal thought, until she wakes up in a ditch back home in North Carolina. Dare, the man pulling her broken body from the wreckage, has a restraining order against him. He’s no longer the clean-cut boy she went frog gigging with but road-hardened. His lean, muscular arms, riddled with tats, drag her out of the SUV. She should fear him, but instead, his touch sparks memories that tell her she once worshipped him with all her heart.

Blackout by Chris Myers was a riveting and intriguing steamy psychological suspenseful thriller. This story was so intense that will keep you on the edge of your seats with it exceptional depth of integrating a story mixed with mystery, suspense and sexiness.
When Teal Convington returns back home to North Carolina after several years, the nightmares and blackouts also seems to return as well. These blackouts plagues Teal from truly living and the only person that she could turn to for support was Dare Tucker. The chemistry between Teal and Dare can be described as palpable, hot, and intense. While this book was able to fuse suspense and romance, Ms. Myers did an exemplary job with this book as she will have readers guessing on who the bad guy is.
This was my first time reading from this author and I have to say that I will keep an out on this author. Overall, this book was a sexy suspenseful New Adult book that was well written and had a story-line that you can get lost in.

This is the first book I have read by Chris Myers and she did a good job on it. After reading the synopsis I was very eager to get my hands on this one , it seemed like something I would enjoy. It gt straight into the story and whilst I liked it I didn't feel gripped by the story or writing, it was like looking in from the outside and not being involved like I like to be.
Shannon's Thoughts I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but I'll admit the author did an excellent job of keeping me guessing who the bad buy was.
Teal returns home to her sleepy little North Carolina beach town after spending the past few years in Paris with her father. She was finally free from the blackouts and nightmares that had haunted her since she was eight years old. But the minute she returns, the blackouts come back and as does her desperate need for her old best friend Dare.
Something pretty horrific had happened to Teal when she was a little girl. The only other person to somewhat witness what she did was the best friend that was ripped away from her. So it's understandable that she'd have some long lasting effects. What didn't seem right was the fact that everyone seemed to dismiss the things Teal said happened and instead placed the blame on Dare. Out of everyone who supposedly was looking out for her best interest, it was only Dare that put his neck on the line (time and again) to make sure that Teal was safe from a past that continued to haunt her. I wasn't sure how a romance could happen between these two, considering their past. But Dare proved over and over that long does conquer all.
The suspense part of the book did keep me engage. I wasn't sure who was behind what was happening and didn't trust a lot of the characters. The author did a great job of planting a suspicion seed in each character to ensure the reader wasn't a 100% sure they could trust them. That went a long way in keep my interest in the story, even when the teenage angst got to be a little too much.
This is the first book I've read by Chris Myers, but she's definitely peeked my interest with her writing and I'll definitely be checking out her other titles. This book was reviewed by a member of the review staff at Cocktails and Books. Book Title: Blackout Author: Chris Myers Series: Lost Girls #1 Genre: Romantic Suspense, New Adult Publisher: Romance Beckons Source: I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
DNF…at 15%...I don't get how all those people could not only read this but like it. I just couldn't do it…The writing's all over the place and childish…like childishly slutty. I'm not having the best of luck with Arc's lately. No rating.
Holy mother of all books - I could not put Blackout down. Intense doesn't begin to describe the drama and the plot that Chris Myers crafted. With each page you're digging into the mystery that surrounds Teal's life. You are enticed and captivated. It's so freaking good I cannot endorse it enough.
Just in case that recommendation isn't enough - the couple in the book are so incredibly sexy and hot, I'm fanning myself just thinking about them. Dare and Teal were childhood friends until tragedy struck. They have spent the last 10 years in their own personal hells because of that event.
Now that Teal is back, they can not seem to avoid each other and you're melting every time that they give into their feelings. It is AWESOME!
Blackout is filled with passion, mystery and incredible characters. The plot moves at a fast pace and you love every moment. Definitely check this book out!
I adore books that make me think. I love to get wrapped up and around a story that just won’t let go of me until I have no choice but to read it straight through to the very end. Stories that take me on roller coaster rides, throw me for loops, and leave me breathless from start to finish; books that I think I have figured out until the other shoe drops and I am left with my mouth gaping open, stunned at the result. Blackout did all these things for me and more.
I was enthralled from the beginning. What heartbreak caused Teal’s mysterious blackouts? How was Dare involved? How can they resist their undeniable chemistry? These questions and more had me stuck in my seat, devouring the book page by page until I got my answers.
The writing was crisp, the characters well-developed…there was not one thing to make me not be smitten with everything about this book. Chris Myers has a new fan in me <3
*This book was given to me for a fair and honest review
Wow, this was a fantastic book. There was enough drama, mystery and steam to keep to keep the readers wanting more. Then there was the twist and turns to keep the readers on the edge of their seats at other points. I loved this book. The characters were interesting, there was the dual point of view and a back stories on characters to make the readers love them even more. I loved watching the attraction between Dare and Teal. As the story unraveled I loved that it wasn't so easy to guess and just when you think you know whats going to happen something else throws you to a different assumption.
Overall I found this book interesting, with a unique story line and vivid description of things that were occurring throughout the book. I loved this and would recommend you lovely readers to check out this book.
What would you do if you lost part of your memories? Would you do anything to retrieve those memories? What if those memories held some horrid truth that your mind has blocked out on purpose to protect you? Would you still seek those memories out?
These are just some of the questions that are going through Teal Covington’s mind right now. Ten years ago at age 8, she wakes up in a swamp all scraped up, covered blood and has a split skull. Her 11 year old best friend Dare is by her side when she wakes up. She has no recollection of what happened that day in the swamp. As a result of the gash in her head, she has reoccurring blackouts now. Along with the memories from that day, she also lost all memories of her mother. With no one else to blame, her father accuses Dare of “touching” his daughter and presses charges against him.
After the incident in the swamp, her mom appears to have abandons her and her father. Her dad believes she went off to Paris to live out her dream as an artist. Her dad decides after everything that has happened to Teal, it would be best to get out of the town they’ve called home and move to Paris in hopes of finding her mother and convincing her to come home and in hopes of finding help for Teal with her reoccurring blackouts. Now 10 yrs later, still no memories have returned, no mom, and the doctors have deemed her “cured”. She has had minimal episodes of blackouts since moving. Now she is moving back to town with the swamp that haunts her nightmares to help out her aging grandmother, but really she wants to get her memories back. Little does she know, she was not the only one affected by that day. Dare has his own memories from that day. Upon Teal’s return, her blackouts come back full force. She is more determined than ever to figure out what happened that day in the swamp, so she seeks out Dare’s help. But does Dare want to help her after her dad accused him of touching her in the swamp that day?
In a search for her memories and in hopes of stopping the blackouts completely, Teal seeks out the one place she wants to forget forever. In doing so, she blackouts more and more and starts remembering bits and pieces of that day and memories of her mother. Can she handle digging up the past and live the consequences of getting those memories back? Some memories are left buried. Someone doesn’t want Teal to get those memories back and they will do anything to stop those memories from resurfacing. Why don’t they want those memories to return? What is there to hide from that day?
**** Who doesn’t love a good mystery?
I am usually not a "mystery" type of book reader, but let me tell you...I AM NOW! I was completely immersed in this book from the beginning! Each turned page, delved me deeper and deeper into the mystery that is Teal’s life. What is she not remembering?!?! And should she seek out those memories or leave them buried in the bog?!?!
I felt myself, very much like Teal, seeking out the answers! I wanted to know as badly as she did what happened 10 yrs ago at the swamp. I would stay up late at night reading and get up early to read a little bit more before my kids woke up...I needed answers!
The storyline and plot was great! I love all the twists and turns Chris Myers put into it to make everything and everyone so intertwined...true to the “small town” stereotype. “Everyone knows everyone’s business.” I personally grew up in a town of 800 people, so I know how that works. I am terrible at figuring out mysteries...hence the reason I typically don’t read mystery books, but this ending I did NOT see coming! I LOVE when authors can do that to their readers and Chris Myers did that in Blackout.
All in all, I really liked this book...BUT...I was a little disappointed in the “ending”. I loved everything up until the last 2 chapters. After the “breakthrough” in memories, it felt slightly rushed. Then we jump 2 yrs, things still seem unresolved and we still have unanswered questions. And then...THE END. WHAT?!?! I need more details! What happened with the one guy? What happened with the other guy? What happened with her mom? QUESTIONS! (I can’t list my other questions bc I don’t want any spoilers). I am really hopeful that maybe there’s another book to come out to answer some of my questions, but then again, maybe that’s part of the mystery...maybe that was Chris Myers intent...leaving me with some questions of my own. I will have to wait and see ;)
Blackout is packed full of mystery, passion, and it keeps you intrigued until the very end!
Brilliant! This book was right up my alley. I haven't read a book in ages that had me glued to the pages. I love a good romantic suspense/thriller and Blackout fit the bill beautifully. The story kept me thinking I might know what happened...but then something would shift and throw me off, ah the the mystery was definitely there and really well done.
The romantic connection between Dare and Teal was undeniable. I loved the feeling of push and pull between them, yet they couldn't do anything about it. They truly were stuck and not able to act on anything, even with all the feelings bubbling below the surface. My friends, this was a fantastic and intense slow burn.
I knew Dare was one of the good guys and while he was tough, he was a good soul. But there were a lot of other characters in this book; there were good guys, there were tough guys, and there were bad guys. I had a vibe who I thought was THE bad guy(s), but didn’t know how to piece it together. I could eliminate person by person as I read, but I couldn’t figure out what happened...yet it was right at my fingertips. This is why I loved this story and was utterly addicted, I love a good mystery and this one was fantastic. As close as I got to guessing everything I just couldn’t and it was done so well.
What left me scratching my head? I didn't like how everybody wanted to sexually assault Teal. It happened so often when she was younger, and then it was happening again in the present now that she's older. It didn't strike me as realistic. Yes, I know there are creeps out there, but this felt like that almost every single man around every single corner was doing this to her. Also, if these guys (like the Collins twins) were for real I would be scared out of my mind. If that happened to me I would be so worried that they would be coming to my house at night, yet there was no sense of stalking that should have gone along with it...and that's why this is unrealistic. However, I know this is a story so I kept going.
The ending was perfect. The right amount of me freaking out, followed by closure that was so satisfying in so many ways. I can't say more, but there was a happy ending with lots of answers.
Rec this? If you love an edgy romantic suspense, then YES YES YES. I also do need to warn that this is not for the faint of heart, so if you feel like adult topics or sensitive issues would bother you, this is not for you. However, if all those things are ok, this is a great add for your TBR. Ms. Myers has a gift for weaving a complex and compelling tell, all while fitting in a sexy romance. I can't wait to start book 2!

This book took me by surprise a bit with how much I actually enjoyed it! Blackout pulled me in from the first chapter and kept me turning the pages straight through to the end.
After suffering through a horrible ordeal she doesn't completely remember 10 years ago, Teal's father moved her to Paris with him to escape the painful reminders and blackouts. Now her grandmother's health is failing and she returns to the Outer Banks to help her. Although Teal hasn't suffered a blackout in years, the minute she enters the swamp on her way to her grandmother's home, she has an episode and crashes the car. One Darius "Dare" Tucker finds her and rescues her before the vehicle is swallowed by the bog.
Dare is no longer the boy she used to tag along with on fishing trips anymore. He is all grown up, hot, tatted, and he hates her for ruining his life ten years ago although she isn't sure quite how she did that. When she learns he was accused of molesting her and forced to register as s sex offender at age 11, she is stunned. Her memories of Dare are crystal clear and she specifically recalls telling her father and the judge he didn't do anything wrong- in fact, he tried to help her.
She realizes she needs to get her memories of that day back if she is ever going to have a normal life but she has no idea the storm that decision will cause. Old prejudices die hard, secrets have a way of trying to stay buried, and people try to throw out roadblocks at every turn including Dare. He has suffered enough over the past 10 years and lost out on his dreams because of her, yet he can't seem to stay away from her either. And the fact that his voice and touch are the only things to ground Teal enough to pull her out of her spells just further underline that he had nothing to do with her being hurt all those years ago.
There are twists and turns along the way, and although I was able to figure out most of the situation and bad guys early on, there were still a few unexpected pieces that weren't obvious. Dare and Teal had great chemistry and he was definitely hot, but I have to say a few of the author's descriptive terms were different and at times a bit off-putting to me when reading the sex scenes. There are a few things I never would expect to see referencing body parts that are used in this story but fortunately it didn't happen all that often.
I enjoyed a lot of the secondary characters like Carolina, Dare's brothers, Teal's best friend Kami, and Teal's therapist Miles. Her grandmother Lulu was outspoken, unfiltered and generally hilarious. Overall Blackout was a very pleasant surprise!
Blackout had me intrigued from the get go. An interesting synopsis I hoped that like many books it didn't give me too many answers and spoil things. There was just enough info to have my interest pique! This was the first book I'd read by the author too which would usually give the author a bit of a break, but after the good synopsis I had high expectations (Plus I'd read 2 good books before it, this couldn't possibly be 3 in a row!).
I'm not going to go into the synopsis, nor the storyline too much. Blackout is one of those books that I could say something and it gives too much away. What I will say is there's a really good mystery. You will think you have a suspect then something else will happen to sway you and change your mind. I did this throughout the book and although my suspicions were right (Sorry I always work these darn things out!), there's a really nice twist that will throw things on their head again.
There's some cool characters in this. I loved the Tucker boys although you obviously here more about Dare as the story centres around him and Teal. The story is told from Teal's point of view with flash backs to the fateful day when everything changed and her blackouts started. She's a really likeable character. I loved her thoughts on The Story of O and how she grew in the book too. Can I add the sex scenes are HOT! The chemistry between Tate and Dare is undeniable and I feel that in many ways kept me more gripped. At times i wished we had heard more of her best friend which I really liked, that girl had some character!
The story has a good pace. I could have easily read this in 1 sitting but unfortunately I had to sleep and do 'mum' stuff, which meant it was read over 2. However, it remained on my mind with me trying to work out what had happened.
There is a strong romantic, new adult feel to this book but I also feel those who love mystery/thrillers/suspense will get a kick out of this too. Don't let it being a NA put you off. I will say this is definitely not a YA, do not suitable for those under 18. I give Blackout 4 stars, I'm starting Kiss The Boys next which is the second book in the Lost Girls series (Although I also believe they are standalones).
Blackout is a lot different than most books that I’m used to reading. I consider this book a Psychological Thriller. Blackout keeps you on the edge of your seat as you are reading and just when you think you have the whole storyline figured out, you are thrown through a loop. The writing is excellent and the pace is perfect. Teal Covington has been living overseas for the past few years and is now returning to her hometown. When Teal was a child, she experience a life altering attack that left her with brain damage and little to no memory of what happened. Teal’s childhood friend, Dare, found her the day she was attacked and because of being in the wrong place at the wrong time is accused of attacking her. The brain damage that Teal experienced leaves her with blackouts that can happen when she is around a trigger of the accident. This is why coming back to her hometown where the accident occurred is hard for her. When she starts to have her blackout incidents again, Dare seems to always be there for her. Teal and Dare both know that it is dangerous for them to be around each other but yet it is like they are magnetized. Teal wants to get down to the bottom of what really happened many years ago so she can finally have peace of mind and hopefully get rid of her blackouts. While doing this, she is thrown curve balls from every direction that get both her and the people around her in trouble. I absolutely loved reading this thriller from Chris Meyers. It was the first of Meyer’s books I’ve read but I’m 100% positive that I will be adding all of her books to my TBR list and you should too!

Wow this book had me on the edge if my seat from beginning to end. Such an intense read, which had my head spinning with all the twists. Mystery, Drama, Lust, Love….you name it, this book has it
Teal has suffered from blackouts since that life changing night at the age of 8.She has no memory of the events although she knows it was bad. She left for Paris with her father where she has seen numerous doctors and after not having any episodes for 2 years she thinks she is cured. Teal returns home due to her grandma’s ill health but on her way to the house the blackness descends once again leading to her crashing her SUV.
Dare was Teals best friend and he found her that horrible night when she was 8, battered and scared. He tried to help her only to end up becoming the accused. Dare losses so much due to the fact Teal has lost her memory from that night.
Dare comes to Teals rescue when he finds her hurt in the SUV and the chemistry between them is instantly identifiable. They shouldn’t be near one another but the pull is too strong to deny. After some hot, intense meetings between them both Teal realize that they must work together to find out what happened that night ten years ago.
Can they get the answers they both seek? Can they move forward together? There are many things that they are both uncertain of, however they are certain they are both Innocent.
This is my first book by Chris Myers and I can say that I will be reading more of her books. This book was absolutely amazing. It pulled me in from the first few pages. There are so many twists in this book you think you have it figured out and something else throws you for a loop. You never would have guessed the outcome and I loved everything about it.
Teal has been blacking out since she was 8. Something happened that night but she cannot remember what and she has many parts of her memory that she doesn't recall and people she doesn't remember. She returns back home after being in Paris for 2 years without blackouts to have one driving to her house from the airport. Dare (who is believed to be the person to hurt her when she was 8) Saves her after she crashes her SUV in the swamp. There is instant chemistry that they both try to fight. Dare wants nothing to do with her because he believes she ruined his life. Teal just wants questions answered about that day when she was 8 and why she is having the blackouts. She goes against her fathers wishes and with Dare's help starts to uncover and remember what happened all those years ago. But what will happen with her and Dare? Will he stick by her or will the truth behind everything push them apart.
I wish i could give this book more than 5 starts because it is well worth it..
good suspense, where I didn't guess whodunnit until the end. As always Chris Myers creates characters who you can relate to yet are on the side of creating a great escape in reading. And while her characters are in their late teens or early twenties, I never feel like I'm reading a juvenile book or book that's over the top where you're thinking characters of this age would never talk like this or act like that. The concept of the plot line is perfect. i felt like I was watching a crime drama on TV. It was well plotted where she left enough holes to keep you turning the page but not to the point where you were lost and couldn't follow what was happening. Myers' always develops book boys who will melt your panties and your heart. Dare is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed his 'townie' attitude (bad boy exterior) but his loyalties were true and he definitely made your heart go pitter patter. Her female characters while vulnerable are strong, independent and feisty. I love that they aren't wishy-washy and whiny. It makes them more attractive. her supporting characters provide a light and humorous side to the story that is usually of a heavy nature. I have read other works by Myers and she definitely continues to be a favourite of mine. Blackout is a stand alone book that is worth your time and a one- click. D 4/5
Blackout by Chris Myers is an emotional roller-coaster of romantic thrills, suspense, dark pasts, and mystery. Fast paced and emotionally engaging, this story of two friends since childhood being ripped apart by circumstances and accusations is one that blew me away.
Teal has been experiencing blackouts ever since a traumatic event happened to her when she was eight. She cannot remember that event but that was also the day that her closest friend Dare saved her and was simultaneously accused of abusing her. He was only eleven.
The blackouts continued until Teal left the country for a couple of years to attend school in France with her father who is an international lawyer, but now her gran is not well and she's back home to help take care of her the summer before she starts college.
She thought she was cured but being back where the events took p[lace almost a decade ago is triggering the blackouts and bringing the creeps outta the woodwork. Will she ever be able to heal from the traumatic event that she cannot even remember?

4.5 stars!
This book was intriguing from the very first page!
I appreciate that the psychological portion of this psychological thriller was actually believable. And the thriller portion was pretty spot-on, as well. I could see how Teal's trauma could have affected her memory and her blackouts and I was actually able to enjoy the mystery. Usually, when I read any kind of mystery, my attention is targeted on figuring out whodunnit instead of the intricacies of the story. With 'Blackout' I got really into the developing romance between Teal and Dare and was able to just sit back and enjoy the mystery as it happened.
I did find Teal's approach to/treatment of Graham the teensiest bit callous. She knew his history but proceeded to rub salt in his wounds with some of her actions. However, it didn't seem to be intentional for her and I can't even be sure she knew what she was doing.
There were also a few euphemisms used that were painful to read (e.g., squeezebox). I wasn't sure if this was supposed to reflect Teal's inexperience but I cringed anyway.
All the same, I think the author did an amazing job and I can't wait to read more of the "Lost Girls" series!
Chris Myers is a brilliant writer. This is a gripping story of a young girl named Teal who witnessed something terrible in the swamp. Due to the event she encounters frequent blackouts. While in the swamp she runs, she feels as if she is running from a monster. Dare, a boy she knows encounters her and ask her what happened. During this time she blacks out. Once the cops get there, Dane is arrested. The only thing Teal knows is that her dad put a restraining order on Dare. Teal goes to Paris with her dad to work on her blackouts to determine the cause. Eventually,(almost 10 years later) she is considered cured by the Psychiatrist and returns back to her hometown, leaving her dad in Paris. Once she arrives, so do the blackouts. She learns that Dare is listed as a sexual offender yet she knows that he did not touch her, and he is the one who saved her. Will Teal be able to conquer the blackouts? Will Dare forgive her for what happened? Will she remember what happened in the swamp? This is a very riveting book. I couldn't hardly put the book down. Excellent.
MY REVIEW I could not put Blackout down the story is so intense, i was on the edge of my seat desperately trying to work out who the bad guy was. Chris Myers has woven such a great tale that is packed full of drama, friendship, its incredibly sexy and hot, filled with passion, then there is this wonderful mystery that keeps you guessing you are simply captivated by this story.
Dare and Teal have this beautiful past full of childhood memories and friendship right up until that night where both there lives took a turn no one saw coming, and changed the path there lives would take and there whole future. These are incredible characters you get drawn into the story, it feels like you living it right along with them. Another great character is Teal's gram she is a hoot so very funny.
There is no way you would have guessed the outcome and I loved everything about Blackout a brilliant 5 star read. Chris Myers you rock!
I was given this book as a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much!
This book was amazing. It kept me guessing the entire time. I could never figure out who the bad guy was. It was so suspenseful. Of course, I knew the bad guy wasn't Dare even though he was accused of it when Teal was 8.
Dare was the perfect hero. He was sexy, sweet, and protective. They instantly feel something for each other but both have their own reasons to fight it. At first, he blames her for ruining his life but it doesn't stop him from protecting her and helping her find out what really happened. As they begin to figure it out, they grow closer and closer but someone doesn't like that too much at all.
This book was full of romance, suspense, mystery, and sexy time. This was the first book I read by Chris Myers and it won't be the last. Thanks again!
Fantastic romantic suspense where Teal and Dare kept us intrigued and anticipating the next discovery. The writing was strong with awesome pacing and I was definitely hooked from the start.
This is my 1st time reading a book from Chris Myers.
I like the way she set up the characters and plot in this book. You think you know what is going to happen but then Myers throws you for a loop and totally surprises you.
This book had a good combination of suspense, mystery, hotness, sexiness with a psychological thriller all rolled into one.
Teal and Dare are on hot couple. Their romance is a steamy one. Was fanning myself every time they hooked up in this book.
I liked that while reading this book, I could not help but keep second guessing myself of who was the bad egg in the bunch of characters and who was the one I could trust. The end had me floored! Loved that!
Love me a good mystery book & glad I had an opportunity to read this author's work! I will be checking out her other books she has written.
Get this book if you want to read a steamy mystery read for the summer!

This is a first time read from this author and I'm now adding her other works to the books to be read list. This book was extremely engaging, as I didn't know what to expect, as the story unfolded for Teal it also unfolded for us so we learned what she did and it was very harrowing at times and really good all around. As I said the story is engaging, it pulls you into the mystery, you want to know what happened and why she keeps blacking out, because as she said this problem makes her extremely vulnerable. As evidenced by her high school experience. The story is told from the point of view of Teal and you get her emotions, confusion, fear, desperation and her sense of determination to discover her past and become a fully "normal" young woman, as she says she no longer wants to be different.
The story takes it's time to build and unravel especially because it's told from Teal's point of view. She's a eighteen year old girl trying to figure out her place in the world where people know her family's past and know her past but she's at a loss due to the memory loss stemming from that day so many years ago. She wants a future and it doesn't include being sick and being prone to the blackouts that have plagued her since she was eight. I loved the search for self and for her past and of course her complete loss when attempting to fall in love. This all felt realistic considering she'd been so sheltered and separate from others her whole life.
Chris managed to make the swamp and the Outer Banks feel so real while reading, I visited a few summers ago and this just made me feel like I was right back there. The world was described in a way to pull you in and make the swamp a character in the story just like the humans as well.
As the story unfolds you only learn what Teal knows because as a young woman who's life has been dominated by this mystery she's really focused on it. Teal isn't good at focusing on her outer appearance other than to say she looks like her mother so this gives you the opportunity to build her appearance in your head however you want other than knowing she's a red head and pale, she's pretty much a blank slate. The other characters are built the same way giving you the chance to make them appear however you want beyond the basic details that make them unique. I loved her best friend Kami who was a well written and rounded character, I wish we had gotten more form her because she was very good at making Teal feel "normal" and accepted her and her issues. I was pissed with Kami when Officer Tate pulled his b.s move and I totally get it, it happens quite often, way more than people think.
Eventually the plot thickens to the point where you are so absorbed you're just reading to find out what happened. I loved her cluelessness when it comes to love and even though she wants to change it doesn't happen immediately it takes sometime for her to become comfortable with Dare, and her other suitor. I loved that she had to choose, the one that is easy or the one that comes with complications and a few strings to the past? I liked her and Dare together, and especially as friends.
The only problems I had with the book took place because Dare had been with someone else less than a week before and y'all aren't being safe. The discussion didn't take place until after sex had taken place. My second problem with the book and really the part that pushed me to drop it to 4 stars instead of 5, is the immaturity shown in discussing their sexual body parts. Throughout the book hoops are jumped, lengths taken all in the desperation not to use the word vagina or penis. These are the clinical terms y'all, not "squeezebox" really WTF is a squeezebox?? Considering you're dealing with some adult content and then you do this?? His 'spear of her indulgence" for real?? Yeah no.
04/12 77.0% "I'm hollering, Chris has used every euphemism she can just so she doesn't say cock. I'm dying is too funny. Every thing else is clinically correct but those two parts? ? Nope. It's a "moule" and "the spear of my indulgence". Bwahaha. Still love it though" 04/12 92.0% "Why am I reminded of Reba's "song lights in Georgia" ? "
I loved the ending, however I'm not sure she made a good decision there, I loved that she was willing to be a shield for someone vulnerable and that she was willing to take the risk and be apart of Dare's world.
It's a wonderful story, engaging suspenseful, and extremely sensual (despite the euphemisms) and I finished it really quickly because I just needed to know what happened 10 years ago.
Blackout by Chris Myers Source: ARC from author My Rating: 4½/5 stars My Review:
Teal Covington has some sort of craptastic life!! At just eight years old she was attacked, her head split wide open like a melon, her best-friend was accused of molesting her, her mother disappeared from her life and, she began blacking out. In an effort to shield Teal from the small town fallout and harassment related to the events of her childhood, her father moves her to Paris where she spends two blissful years having only one blackout. Though Teal is thankful for the blackout reprieve she feels far from cured and desperately wants to understand what happened to her that fateful day ten years ago. In order to understand her past, Teal has to confront it and that means returning to the scene of the crime.
Returning to North Carolina is not something Teal ever thought she would do but her grandmother (a most delightful, Lulu!) needs her and if she is ever going to be cured, North Carolina is the place to be. Before she can even get home, Teal blacks out and buries her car in the swamp where her nightmare began. Before she can go down with the ship so to speak, Teal is rescued by her one-time best friend, Dare Tucker. The ten years between now and then have been both very good and very hard for Dare. On the one hand he has grown into the sexiest man Teal has ever seen and on the other hand, he has become hardened, cynical and, angry.
Dare Tucker only ever wanted to get out of his home town and become a veterinarian. The day he rescued Teal Covington in the swamp changed the course of his life and got him labeled as a sex offender for a crime he didn’t commit. Based on what Dare knows, Teal drove the final nail into his coffin with her testimony to the judge and though he has tried to forgive her, he just can’t forget how she derailed his life. To make matters worse, fishing Teal out of the swamp after her wreck gives Dare a chance to really see her. Dare is instantly struck by Teal’s beauty and though he wants to be mad at her, he just can’t control his body’s and heart’s reaction to her.
Within days, Teal knows coming home was the best and worst thing she could have done. She has a new therapist (a seriously funny and caring, Miles!) who is helping her understand the events of her past, she is actively pursuing why Dare hates her and thinks she hung him out to dry and, actively trying to push past her insecurities and stand on her own two feet for the first time in her life. Teal is determined to understand her past and someone is very intent on her not discovering the truth. It doesn’t take long for Teal to realize the closer she gets to the truth the more danger she is in. Her home is invaded, her security is threatened and those she chooses to be close too are in serious danger. Before all is said and done, Teal and Dare will rip the Band-Aid off a slew of old wounds, expose a crazy number of bat-shit crazy people and, find a way back to one another.
The Bottom Line: As always, Myers has created a crazy-complicated plot that is surprisingly easy to follow. There are more twists and turns in this plot than a crazy, country road but Myers takes you through it all with the smoothness and ease that only comes from a seasoned writer. Teal is a walking contradiction with her strength and her determination balanced by her vulnerability. She needs to understand her past in order to have any sort of future and she is willing to endure a whole lot of awful to get to her HEA. Dare is the highlight of this read with his actual physical strength balanced by a very caring nature. He and his brothers (whom I would love to know more about!) are a crazy mix of personalities that are ultimately loyal to one another and those they care for. Dare’s past has haunted him for ten long years and if he can do more than lust after Teal, he may have a bright and well-deserved future of his very own. The big reveal in this story is somewhat expected but the extent to which everyone is involved and the activities they were involved in is most unexpected. The reveal regarding Teal’s mother is as interesting as it is abhorrent and adds a whole new level of ick to this read. Finally, there are the naughty bits with Dare and Teal. In general, I was quite pleased with the naughty bits – Dare is quite hot, after all - but some of the language was a bit off putting for me. I don’t mean the dirty words but some of the adjectives used to describe the bits and pieces. No girl’s vagina should ever be referred to as a squeezebox, especially in the midst of sex. With that being said, I certainly didn’t let this one minor element distract me (too much!) from my overall enjoyment of the read. Honestly, if you haven’t yet discovered Chris Myers, it’s time you do so and Blackout is a fine place to start!
This synopsis immediately got me. I needed this book immediately. I am not a very big thriller reader. I don’t know why cause I love thriller movie but anyway. The plot in this book was really good. I had no idea what was going on and I couldn’t put the book down. I read it in one sitting and in a few hours. This book consumed me even though I had some big problems with some of it.
Let’s start with talk about the plot. Since Teal was eight years old the blackouts started. There was tragic day that she can’t remember. Ten years later she comes back home to deal with the blackouts and help take care of her sick grandmother. What she doesn’t expect are the blackouts to start again and the hatred that comes from Dare, her childhood friend. I thought that the mystery and the angst was amazing in this book. There were so many things going on and so many people that could be doing I really couldn’t make a good guess and those are the books I love the most. The plot and all of the twists and turns were really well laid out. They kept you guessing and kept your mind planted firmly in the world.
The characters were another good part about the book. Teal has been having blackouts since she was eight and you can really tell how they disabled her development. She seemed really naïve and childish sometimes. But I mean how easy is it to grow up not depending on people when you blackout at random times. For what Teal actually went through she was a pretty normal character. She has insecurities and bad moments but she was also strong. She stood up to her father and the monsters that were following her. She didn’t give up and hide, she kept fighting. Dare was interesting. His life was completely destroyed the night that started the blackouts. He was gentle, kind, and intelligent. Then one night and one set-up ruined everything. Now he is hard, cold, and filled with hatred. He has a rap sheet a mile long and everyone thinks he is a pervert. I didn’t like him as much as I liked Teal but he was ok. He was protective, my problem was that he never really gave his “good friend” the benefit of the doubt. All throughout the book you could tell that even though he wanted to claim her there was still some hatred there. The characters worked well together throughout the story.
Now this is where the story lost its stars, the romance. The romance between Dare and Teal really confused me because of the back and forth. Teal wanted to be with him but didn’t want to cause any more problems. She wanted to be with him but he wasn’t stable enough for her. I don’t mind back and forth as long as it stops at some point. Dare wanted her but hated her. Dare wanted her but didn’t trust her. Dare wanted her but couldn’t jeopardize anymore of his future. There was so much back and forth and it kept on right until the last chapter. The end of their romance really confused and angered me as well. Their whole romance just made me angry. There was nothing that I really like about them together. The story and the mystery was amazing and I loved that. Their relationship however is a different story.
Blackout is a physiological thriller, a romance, a mystery book all rolled into a New Adult format. It was a very interesting book that had a compelling premise. There is a great romance and a lot of cool physiological aspects. There is a fantastic, dark mystery that we get to explore, limited by our protagonist's memory loss. However, I found that a lot of potential was lost with the book as I found a couple problems with it.
Let's start with the good. The ambiance was executed very well. The unease and disquiet of an unfinished mystery in this town is definitely exemplified through the writing. The murder story that we only receive bits and pieces of throughout the book keep the story interesting and thrilling. It was much like a "whodunit." The narrative was engaging. The wrap-up in the end was very well done, bringing all the pieces and clues together to form a shocking and satisfying conclusion. The romance was steamy and passionate, and I did enjoy the relationship of Dare and Teal. I always looked forward to those scenes.
Some of the problems I found with the book was mostly to do with the characters. Most, if not all, of the characters were very flat and static, most of the supporting characters were just flat out stereotypes. Our protagonist, Teal, is a very typical "girl-next-door-turned-hot" character. I was annoyed with her at times by her ignorance to how attractive she is. Literally, every man she sees hits on her and she get's embarrassed and blushy every time. Her character was not very believable at all. Also, many of her decisions were pretty dumb. (*Spoilers: Her arm is broken and she decides to drive a car! She found out a boy got slaughtered and she goes to a distanced swamp with only one other person as protection! She knows she has a stalker and she walks home alone in the dark!) There were a lot of potential side story lines that I felt could have made the story much richer.
I found that the book was very heavily focused on physical appearance, which did take away a lot from the story itself. Teal is beautiful, Dare is beautiful, Graham is beautiful, Kami is beautiful, everyone is beautiful and attractive, and there would be pages and pages going on about how pretty every character is. This did take away from actual character building for me. The characters turned into nothing more than there appearance. The Tuckers were nothing more than the hot family. There are also a lot of cat calls and just random compliments that are thrown at Teal which seem misplaced and odd. It just felt weird for me and that did distract me from the story.
Overall, Blackout is a strong book in terms of the setting, the ambiance, and the story line, but weak in terms of character building. There was a great accompanying romance, however the dialogue and personas in the book fell flat for me. There is a lack of deep or believable characters. Blackout is recommended to those who wish to read a New Adult with some suspenseful elements.

I Really enjoyed reading this book!
It was well written, mysterious and full of suspense. I kept wondering what really happend that day on the swamp, when Teal was 8 years old...
“The one memory I have from that day in the swamp lies hazed in fog and plays in my mind like a recurring nightmare. I’m eight, and I’m running for my life.”
Someone hurt Teal... someone was trying to catch her and she was terrified!
“Don’t let him get me. Don’t let the monster hurt me.”
Since that day, Teal suffers from Blackouts...
“The doctors don’t really know what caused my blackouts. Some think epilepsy. I’ve had one seizure, and that occurred shortly after the day I was found in the swamp. One believed I was schizophrenic, which could be the case. I felt crazy when all I wanted to be is normal. At one time, I most certainly fit part of the description—lose touch with reality, blackouts. I definitely had panic disorder because when the flashes of light and jumbled images swirl in my head, I freaked because I knew what was coming next—another moment in time gone, completely erased from my memory bank, a blackout.”
Everyone believes Dare hurt her! ... But, that's the only thing she does remember from that day... that he didn't!
... But, can her memories from that day, really, be trusted?!
“I never said anything about Dare, other than he found me. Had they discovered something else? Am I wrong about him?”
10 years later, Teal believes her blackouts are long gone, that she's cured...
“I’ve been deemed cured by French doctors with no explanation, no solid diagnosis, and no recovered lost memories. No one has ever told me why part of my life is a blank canvas.”
...only to have a Blackout episode as she comes back home (after being away in France for 2 years) and passes through the swamp where it all started.
And, she ends up meeting Dare again... and he's way different from the 11 year old boy she last saw... but, somehow, deep in, he's still the same.
“I still like him. When I was eight, he was my hero.”
“I should steer clear of him I remind myself. Our friendship disappeared on that day in the swamp. But if I knew what Dare knows, maybe that would help my condition.”
Dare keeps saving and protecting Teal!
And it's Good that he does, because Teal might just be in Real Danger again!
“Someone breaking into your house, and now this. Us digging into your memory loss is probably putting you in danger.”
What really happend 10 years ago, in the swamp? Who hurt Teal? And, as someone starts stalking her, will she be okay?! Will she ever remember what happend on that awful day?
Read the book to find out ;)
***************** So, why 4 stars?!
Because... I really liked the relationship between Teal and Dare; and I Loved the Mystery and trying to guess what happend and who's really at fault here! :)
