Jake Miller likes his life. It’s simple and quiet. Solitary. He’s taking the last thing his mother truly cared about before she died, the properties she owned, and making them his purpose. His time in the Army hadn’t allowed him to be there for her before, but this is something he can do now. Just him and his dog. Exactly how he wants it. Until her, his first tenant. With her innate openness and blinding smiles, the opposite of everything he thought he could possibly want.
She needs to grow up.
Casey Steadman has less to show for her twenty-nine years than she’d hoped. No white picket fence. No 2.5 kids. And definitely no loving husband. Just a few lukewarm relationships, an exceedingly crappy apartment, and a fabulous shoe collection (and the credit card debt to prove it). Moving into her new place is one big, high heeled step towards a new life. The stable, make-boring-mature-decisions kind of life that she needs to be able to prove to her family that she can live. What she wasn’t planning on was her hotter-than-Hades new landlord.
Sparks are a-flying, and they’re the kind that can only come from a stiletto-loving, dog-hating, budget-repelling, relentlessly optimistic, youngest of five becoming the tenant and next door neighbor to a stoically silent, slightly pessimistic, ‘my only friend is my dog’, only child and former Army Ranger. Casey and Jake are total opposites. But when they come together, it just might be true love.
This was a very engaging, well written and sweet debut. It was hard to put down and had great comedic timing. Casey Steadman is ready to be the adult she envisions for herself. She's had her eye on a property that finally went up for rent and she sees it as a sign that things are going to change for the better. She's worked at the same place for many years and loves it, she has a great family and a supportive, yet hilarious set of best friends. Did I mention she has an alarmingly vast shoe collection? That I was deliriously envious of?? That's the one thing Casey will splurge on, save every last penny for that hot designer slingback or stiletto. But she also feels her life is somewhat stagnant, so getting the brooding and quiet landlord, Jake Miller, to agree to her lease is the game changer.
Jake Miller has made it his life mission to renovate and make good with his deceased mothers' properties. Having been absent for so much because of being in the army, Jake wants to make up for lost opportunities and make his mom's memory proud. He has his trusty and loyal German Shepherd, Remy, his power tools and little else, and he likes it that way. Until the lovely and colourful Casey comes to rent one of the duplexes. Then...everything changes, for the both of them.
What I loved about this was the slow and realistic relationship development between Jake and Casey. There was no insta-anything, things progressed naturally and doing otherwise would have been unbelievable and in opposition with the heroes character. Jake was a quiet, short sentence kind of man. He's used to being alone and approaches everything with caution, including Casey, so him jumping headfirst into something would have been suspicious. He tried to deny his feelings, tried to avoid the churning, gut deep reaction to his new tenant, but eventually he realized it was futile. Casey was the opposite of Jake: effervescent, talkative, lively, and didn't hold anything back. They complemented each other beautifully, she brought out the best in him and made him the best version of himself.
There were some very interesting developments here was well. I loved how this book not only focused on Jake and Casey, but has other sub-plots that kept everything interesting. Casey's besties, Rachel and Liz, were a riot! Loved them. Casey's family was awesome as well. Four older brothers and great parents, they spoiled Casey but were also there for her when she needed it. The funny banter between siblings was priceless! Loved that.
But, not everything was as easy as Casey was used to. Jake had to deal with some pretty significant issues and I loved seeing how the author incorporated the reality of being with a soldier. It can be disheartening, stressful, tense and scary. It's not a glamorous life and Jake had to come to terms with being able to accept someone else accepting that about him. This is where the story shined for me, not that it didn't shine anywhere else! It did. But I loved how Jake and Casey both grew a little, both came out of their comfort zones and both were willing to risk their hearts for a shot at true love. Jake could have handled an issue he had with Casey better, I wanted him to be stronger than that, but I forgave him. The only other thing I wanted was for some more steam. I can completely appreciate closed door sex scenes, but if that's the way a book is set up, then I need lots of sexual tension and a more detailed work up to the sex. That way, a couples attraction is more believable, the, I-can't-keep-my-hands-off-you, type of simmering attraction. At least that's what I expect from CR.
Anyways, this was a lovely book filled with laughter, love and great writing. There were some very tense moments, some angsty moments and of course touching moments. The epilogue was fantastic, I loved it and only wish we got to see a bit of Jake overseas. I can't wait for Tate's and Rachel's book, I think that's going to be incredible as well. Looking forward to reading more of this authors work.
Ok I'm going to be honest (as ever) and give this one a 2 stars encouragement.
I picked this one at an attractive price ($0.99) after the author contacted me for a review, and quite frankly this should have been a perfect read for me. Well, based on the synopsis, anyway.
Unfortunately, what the blurb promised never happened, Neighbors to Lovers trope, mixing in Enemies to Lovers, Army Hero, Sassy Heroine, a supporting and loving family with 4 protective brothers. ALL the aforementioned are favorite tropes of mine. ALL of them.
There was lot of ideas, and maybe too much of them while the story never really "started". It seems all too forced, the characters sharing no chemistry at all in my opinion. I don't mind the absence of steam in my Contemporary Romances, but for 2 characters living next to each other, I never felt any sparks between them, I was told that there was some kind of attraction but it never showed. Even when the author introduced an incentive for the heroine to get jealous, it fell flat.
The author referred to Jake, the military hero, as an "alpha male". In my book, an alpha male, even struggling with his feelings and commitments issues, will SHOW possessiveness toward the woman he covets. But Jake seemed unfazed most of the time, and I don't mean only by the cold shoulder and facade he was wearing on purpose, I'm talking about his general attitude, even in his Pov, I never got from him an Alpha Hero vibe.
The pace was very slow and despite the profusion of drama and new developments the author tried to throw in, the story never held my attention. I keep in mind that this is a debut novel, but as a romance reader, I read every drama and their lamas out there, so reading them all packed in this book was really overwhelming, and I had to (finally) close the book at 87% after rolling my eyes one time too many.
To conclude, while this started with a good idea, By Your Side lost me at the excess of manufactured drama, lack of chemistry and dynamic. The ingredients were there, but the execution failed to satisfy this romance reader. Leaving a positive note about all the their relationship with Remy. Yes, I loved "him"!
(And yes I was totally picturing myself cuddling with the dog. :/ )
I don't usually laugh out loud while reading. In fact, I don't think I ever have. But while reading BY YOUR SIDE, I actually snorted. This, for me, is a BIG deal. Humor is subjective so when I find myself amused by a story, I automatically sit up a little straighter and pay closer attention.
Karla Sorensen crafted a well-rounded and vibrant story, and she did it while splashing plenty of humor throughout. Even though I don't have a lot in common with Casey, the heroine of this story, I understood her. It's a challenge for an author to write a character that you find yourself, as a reader, understanding, even when they make decisions you wouldn't make yourself. That's a testament to Ms. Sorensen's talent at writing inner monologue in a way that is not cumbersome to the story, or unnecessary fluff. All of the inner monologue, from both points of view, was *just enough* to understand their motivations and their desires.
I read a lot of debut novels and what sets Karla Sorensen's novel apart from the rest is how fresh her characters are. In a sea of perfect heroines, Ms. Sorensen has created characters that are real, flawed; characters who make mistakes and grow throughout the story. The secondary characters were written so well that the moment I finished By Your Side, I wanted to keep reading. I wanted to stay in the world this author created a little while longer.
By Your Side reads like a novel written by a seasoned author, an who is author confident in their craft. I am genuinely impressed that this is Ms. Sorensen's first attempt and am eagerly anticipating the subsequent novels in this series!
Broody Hero. Super positive heroine. Cute dog. Excellent secondary characters. No intimate scenes with anyone other than the Hero and heroine. Pushing away for a good bit. No ex drama. No intimate scenes with anyone other than the Hero and heroine. HEA. Epilogue 18 months later.
First off: Karla Sorensen is a name you need to remember!
I'm in awe that this is her debut novel and I can not wait to read more from her. Her writing style is perfect for anyone who loves contemporary romance. It's so refreshing and sophisticated. With well developed characters that I wish were real, By Your Side is a book everyone needs to read! Casey, her family and friends, Jake, and Remy (yes, the dog) were characters that I didn't want to stop reading about. They're all so different yet they work together. I loved the funny and sweet moments, the suspense, and the character growth.
Casey's life isn't going as planned so she moves into a new place which is owned by the one and only Jake Miller. Hot damn, Casey just scored the perfect apartment for her to start getting her life back on track. What I loved most about this book was that their relationship wasn't instant. It slowly built up. It was real. There was some push and pull that only made them closer in the end. And that ending had my heart fluttering in my chest. <3
I highly recommend this!

Aww, I feel so warm and light-headed after finishing this sweet romance. It was amazing, I haven't laughed and been moved so much at once by a book like here while reading By Your Side. I really enjoyed this story. There were some hilarious scenes that made me snort from laughing (mostly thanks to Casey and Remy's many interactions) - great humor is a big advantage of this novel. Besides laughter the story stirred up some rage (Melinda ugh, I want to punch her so badly), plus the angst and heartache the author delivered here - all that creates one good story that you don't want to end.
I was hooked from the first chapter, I loved Casey, a joyful shoe-holic who needs to grow up and (my newest book boyfriend) a brooding landlord and dog owner, Jake aka "Sexiness Personified" with his tool belt, yum! ;) I couldn't help but turn into mush everytime he and Remy appeared <3 I was impatiently awaiting the story to unravel, ever since the main characters' first meeting I found myself grinning at my e-reader which lasted for most of the time I've spent with this book. Also, all the secondary characters: Casey's best friends and family, even the evil guys: Creepy Eye Guy Steve (bleh) and Melinda (ugh) were a great background to Casey and Jake's love story. It was fun to see sparks fly between Rachel and Tate already here, it was a good foretaste to the second book that I hope will follow very soon. I'm sure Liz will find her soulmate too (Officer MacMillan seemed a very good candidate, lol ;)). And the ending was the perfect cherry on top, so sweet and romantic.
By Your Side is a refreshing story with this great balance of love, humor and angst - perfect to read with a cup of tea in hand and under a warm blanket. I highly recommend it to every fan of Jill Shalvis's books.
Congratulations on such a good debut novel, Karla, can't wait for more of your writing! :)
Here's a fan-made teaser with my favorite quote and character cast
What I liked: 1) The dual povs. 2) The h. She may be a little silly or naive, with her list of things she wanted to accomplish by a certain age, but she was very hardworking, genuine and loved fiercely. 3) The H. I like that he was a hardworking, responsible guy, trying to be a good son to his late mother, and serving our country too. I also love the fact that he didn't need to fill the void with meaningless sex. Honestly, I have a hard time reading those stories. They are just so sad to me. I do wish the H were less stubborn, since he was the main reason the angst was drawn out for so long. 4) The relationship between the MCs develops slowly, sometimes at a snail's pace, which isn't my personal preference, but is a nice change to MCs who jump into bed right away. That's just my preference. 5) The pacing. Other than the slowness in the beginning of the book, I felt like events in the plot were space out quite nicely and realistically. There also wasn't a whole lot of drama. You know when you're reading stories where bad things just never stop happening to the MC? If you like that kind of story, this one isn't for you. 6) The secondary characters actually added value to the story. There was a purpose for them being included, not just for the sake of selling future books. 7) Remy. Except for the property destroying, he is awesome. 8) This book wasn't filled with explicit sex scenes to be meaningful. The one sex scene was written in a very tasteful, very non-graphic way and it was much more powerful than much more explicit scenes that I've read elsewhere.
What I didn't like: 1) The beginning was really slow and rather boring. I almost put it down, but I'm glad I soldiered on. (You see what I did there?) 2) I felt like the end was rushed. I wish there was more story after the MCs resolve their issues.
By Your Side follows the story of Jake and Casey. Casey is 29 years old and is finding that her life isn't living up to her expectations. In an effort to make her life go in the right direction, she moves into a new place. What she wasn't planning on, was her landlord, Jake. Jake likes his life just the way that it is. He's enjoying the simple, quiet life. He didn't realize exactly how lonely he is until he meets, Casey. Her smiles and openness are now making him question and want things he's never wanted. Casey and Jake are complete opposites, but you know what they say, opposites attract. Will Jake and Casey find more with each other or will they be destined to just be friends?
Overall, I found this to be quite an enjoyable read. I found the plot and writing style very refreshing. It is a fantastic story of family, friendship, growing up and finding love. I was intrigued by the characters upon the first meeting. I found Casey's family to be very entertaining and I loved how overprotective her older brothers are. I also really liked Casey's girlfriends. They were funny and real. Just the kind of women you'd want to hang out with and call your friend. Casey was a really fun character. I loved her shoe obsession, and her inability to budget her money. I thought that Casey and Jake had some really great chemistry. I loved the slow build of their relationship. By Your Side is a refreshing debut novel by Karla Sorensen and I'm looking forward to reading more from her in the future.
Casey and Jake story was beautifully written. I absolutely loved them from the very beginning. I love how different they were and they worked perfectly. This was my first book from Karla and it definitely won't be my last. 💙💖

As a debut novel, I must really say that I was blown away by this book. The author’s prowess was thorough and fun, clearly picturing out each scene. Her characters were entertaining but shared a tinge of depth that had me flipping pages at odd hours of the day.
But she was just so...overwhelming. Her hair was. Her body was. Her eyes? Yeah. Her smile was like a friggin spotlight, everywhere she unleashed it.
Casey Steadman wanted to prove something to her family and to herself—she can lead a mature life. Her first move was transferring to a new house. But she didn’t know that by moving to that house would pose a danger to her heart. Casey was a really quirky and fun character. She was barely a woman yet no longer a girl. She was amidst this really nice mix of mature and carefree. I really enjoyed her character. I loved learning with her and feeling with her.
Every time she was around him, another little piece of the Jake puzzle fell into place. There was no way she could live here and not fall, just a little bit, for him.
Jake Miller decided that the best way to live his kind of life was to live it with Remy—his two-year-old German Shepherd. Carrying the pain of not being there on his mother’s death, Jake decided that he no longer wanted to burden someone with the nature of his work. Jake was an honest, genuine, and insanely hot military man. I am ogling at the mental picture the author has helped me create in my head. He wasn’t a broken man but you still want to take care of him.
She wanted Jake. Really, really wanted him. And Jake? Well, Jake did not seem to want her.
The chemistry between Jake and Casey simmered at first, an instant connection that shows a huge probability of heated passion. I loved the push and pull between them, how they fought the feelings at first but ended up falling harder. The author has a way of dancing with words and each scene was a delight. Her writing prowess is perfect for avid readers of chic lit romances. It’s quirky, sassy, sophisticated, and hits all the tender female spots!
“By Your Side” is the first book in the Three little words series by Karla Sorensen. I like the way this author write strong smart women, who don’t fade just because they fall in love. This book is no exception. Casey is smart and likes working at “Hearth and Home” but she has bigger aspirations, and she wants more. This story deals with what a lot of us are going through, not getting recognize for your work , and colleagues that seem to get all the breaks. Casey had to move now or be homeless. She found a place she wants call home, but being late for her appointment with the landlord was almost enough to lose the apartment. So when she comes back and confronts Jake he gives in, this of course will be either the best decision he ever makes. Jake spend his time remodeling the complex when he isn’t away serving as an army ranger with the Michigan National Guard. To save money on her rent Casey agrees to taking care of Jake’s dog, Remy and shares her decorating skills.
There’s a strong sexual attraction between the two and they try to resist each other but living so close doesn’t make it easy. Casey is determined to not get too close and Jake isn’t sure what he wants. An unfortunate and painful argument while away with friends end in an unspeakable situation that leaves Casey injured and alone. Jake is left feeling guilty for not protecting Casey and for the word that hurt her more than her attacker.
Being a strong women she isn’t broken from the experience[JH1] instead Casey takes a hard look at herself and takes back control of her life. Jake realizes his life is so much better with her than without her and he makes sure she know how much he loves.
This book is fun to read and reminds us to be strong when faced with bad life situations. It also reminds us that life is better shared with someone you love. 4 stars
This book was a breath of fresh air for me. There isn't a ton of swearing and, the relationship wasn't instant lust/gratification. It was nice to read how a normal relationship might form without all the sex that happens right away in most books in the romance genre these days.
I loved the storyline and the characters were strong. I laughed a lot while reading it and got a bit misty multiple times as well. Pretty good range of emotion/feelings in the story.
I love Casey's sass and humor. She is a go getter who doesn't take no for an answer. Always positive, a cup half full kinda gal.
Jake is broody and keeps to himself. He doesn't let people in...the less people you let in the less chance you have of being hurt.
Well, Casey's bright light and positivity will wear on a guy after a bit...specially since he lives next door to her AND he's her landlord!
See how the story evolves! You'll love the characters. Can't wait to read more about them all!
I did not expect the last 25% of the book to end up the way it did, so kudos to the author for surprising this jaded romance reader.
Story: Casey is an interior decorator/designer and moves into one of a few units owned and under renovation by Jake, an Army Ranger who now is in the National Guard. They're attracted to each other, but as usual, each has their own issues to deal with before they can be in a relationship together. And, this is a Military Romance, so just be prepared.
Admittedly, Casey annoyed me in the beginning and Jake's the silent type, so there's not much dialogue, but both redeem themselves in the the end.
Holy moly, this is a fantastic book! The fact that this is a debut is super impressive. It was well-written, funny, heartfelt, romantic, and overall wonderful. The characters are really well-developed and grow with the story, which is perfectly paced. I can't say enough good things. The only reason this didn't get a fifth star is that I reserve those for books the completely rock my world emotionally. This wasn't that kind of book, but for the kind of book it is, this is as good as it gets. Really, really well done.
I kept looking for the story to happen...but was never able to find it. The book just seemed to meander and was pretty boring. The main female character was supposed to be strong and feisty...but she didn’t stand up for herself with a coworker and was incapable of not buying shoes. Really? Sigh. All-in-all, not a book I would recommend.
Jeezus! This girl! Our heroine, Casey. While I mostly liked her, she was kind of a dingbat.
She was the girl who packs up her entire apartment in anticipation of moving into a duplex she wants, but hasn't yet met with the landlord. And instead of getting to the meeting with him on time, she's late, not because of traffic or some other unavoidable reason, but because she was distracted getting her makeup just right.
She was the girl who stayed mad at a dog, ignoring him for weeks, for chewing up her shoes. Shoes that she left out when she left him alone for hours for the first time in a new place without anything to keep him occupied.
She was the girl who let coworkers and customers at work walk all over her, sexually harass her, steal her ideas - all without ever trying to stand up for herself. Jake, our hero, said to her, "I don’t think you’re the kind of girl who lets herself get pushed around.”. But he was so wrong. That's exactly the kind of girl she was! Good god, grow a pair, sister!
She was the girl who bought a pair of boots instead of paying her rent the very first time it was due. knowing that Jake had taken a chance on her and she'd had to convince him to rent to her in the first place.
But then, holy cow, there were a few times I didn't think too highly of Jake either.
He was the guy who would kiss the girl and then avoid her.
He was the guy who decided to end their could-be relationship after asking for a first date, but then thought it would be okay to lead her on for awhile before letting her know.
He was the guy who asked her to go camping with him and all his Army buddies and then decided to cut her down, crush her feelings and then finally break it off with her.
He was the guy who, after a scary, traumatic thing happens to her, doesn't throw himself at her feet and beg for forgiveness. No, he decides to "give her space" that she didn't ask for, like a cowardly coward! So, it's her that has to finally get them past it. Her, that has to come to him. By that point, I kinda thought he was a giant p*ssy, and she was better off without him.
It is was a little difficult to like either of the protagonists in this book: Casey was portrayed as a shallow, spoilt shopaholic, and Jake was a closed off, soldier-grunt persona.
Casey had a shoe obsession, and the only thing that seemed to give her joy in life was the latest pair of Louboutins or Jimmy Choos. I just don't get this thing with shoes. I am never gonna drop a thousand bucks on a pair of shoes- I reckon that money would go a long way in some village in Africa, just quietly. It isn't so much me being judgey as just not understanding the attraction. So my connection with the heroine remained tenuous for much of the book.
Jake was, frankly, a bit of a prick. His choices were poor and I absolutely hated his actions towards heroine near the end of the story. Unfortunately, he never got the arse-kicking he deserved. Which brings me to the issues I occasionally have with this author: her heroines are a bit too forgiving and tend to do the chasing. The excuse for this is that the hero is so emotionally shut down, he needs the warmth and love of his woman to thaw him. I think those girls need to have higher expectations of their men. Just sayin'.
Casey did go through a transformation, although it took a traumatic event for her to heed the wake-up call.
Finally, not being American makes it hard for me to identify with all the stars-and-stripes patriotism, and the idea of being an active soldier's wife, where he is on deployment in a dangerous foreign country for a year at a time, not being there when kids are born and while they are growing up, is my idea of hell. Given we are talking Afghanistan here, and knowing, now, how that all turned out, the waste of human life and the destruction of relationships and families back home seems a very high price to pay. Yes, the benefit of hindsight, I know. From my Aussie/European perspective, I just struggle with it all. I am sure many will disagree with me- apologies. I know we need soldiers, but boy, it is a hard gig. I won't read the next in this series, as the Rachel character was so obnoxious in this book, I really don't give a FF what happens to her. I will give the third book a shot.
Heartwarming *trigger warning in review that does reveal a plot point/spoiler*
Karla is an excellent writer that never disappoints. This book was a extremely heartwarming, & hopeful. Characters are 3D, with true to life dreams, failings, fears, and lives. Kara takes the time to flesh out a plot that flows seamlessly, and has great pacing. Supporting characters are just has full and fresh as the main, and I was instantly invested in them which took me perfectly into the world created in the book. I could see the scenes coming alive as I read and had a smile on my face throughout the story. I also laughed, a lot, this books funny! In a true to life humorous way, it didn't feel put on or cheesy.
***trigger warning*** While it is a "spoiler" - I feel it is very important to warn survivors that an attempted SA does take place. Discerning readers will quickly see the signs the plot is moving thst way. The scene is NOT graphic in nature, and the writing of the scene & its after affects is handled with care by the author. I would like to thank the author for the care shown in book towards this subject.
I'm writing this review to say: don't read this book by Karla Sorensen; but do read all the rest of hers. I've just binged on eleven of her books over the past fortnight, but this one, her first, just isn't as good as the rest. So, go, please, read the rest! This one didn't work for me. The heroine seemed whiny, immature, addicted to shopping (which I find creepy and damaging, not a cute, harmless hobby), and claimed to be OCD. Ah, I thought: how interesting to read about a character with this disability! Alas, no: it's a thoughtless way to say that she organizes things in her spare time. (Consider the comics of Lily Williams for a glimpse into this disorder. https://lilywilliamsart.com/portfolio... ) Since I wasn't interested in the characters and disengaged with the conflict that was signaled, I quit 30% in. But read her other books. I liked them!

My Thoughts Okay story, but I felt like it dragged at parts.Safe read
I enjoyed that the character’s in this were vastly flawed. I feel like within the romance world there is usually one emotionally mature MC and one that is “broken” or immature. Both characters in “By Your Side” had issues and things to work through together as well as a part. This made it feel more realistic and I appreciated the character growth, specifically in the FMC. Although, I believe we could have gotten more insight into the mind of the MMC.
There are themes of sexual misconduct/assault. One scene could be considered graphic and triggering to readers.
You would enjoy this if you want a little depth and even a little darkness in your romance books.
I loved how ditzy Casey is and boy Jake was an absolute snack BUT......this novel needed some SMUT. Even just a little bit. I know it was a slow burn, but it was a ridiculous level of slow burnt.
There sorry line was beautiful. Both main charaters were described wonderfully, but there was no significant sex scene and its a romance novel.
That was very disappointing. I loved that Jakes a bad ass military Ranger. He seemed like a guy any woman including I would want to be with. He was great wish his hands and an excellent builder and landlord.
I will read the rest of books in this serious, but I'm hoping Karla picks up her game with writing some actual sex scenes in her future romance novels.
This was a sweet, straightforward story with a good balance of heart, humor, and a touch of drama. The secondary characters were developed without distracting from the main couple. Jake and Casey both grow as individuals. She learns to be a more responsible adult after a lifetime of usually getting her way as the baby of a loving family with four older brothers. Jake opens himself to love and be loved again after closing himself off due to losses and lack of family. Their interactions are fun and realistic as they work their way from landlord-tenant, to friends, to couple. I look forward to reading about Rachel and Tate in the next book.
