In this book, English minister F.B. Meyer relates the story of David in a way that reveals practical truths for Christian living. Meyer explores David’s role as a musician, the ancestor of Christ, a shepherd, and a man after God’s own heart. He shows how David’s life can be an encouragement for Christians today.
I picked this up expecting a biography of David. It's not that. It's a series of sermons on scenes from David's life. For what it is, it's very good (though as a heads up, the sermons are almost entirely focused on application rather than exposition). I was just never able to switch mental gears to get in sync with Meyer, and therefore couldn't fully appreciate his work.
Phenomenal Book!! F.B. Meyer does an awesome job of writing about the life of David. It is a book that is simple to understand but filled with so much wisdom. As I read this book, I was able to appreciate the character of David and began to understand in a personal way of how it would have felt to be in David's shoes. This is an inspirational read and it is worth all the time in the world. An excellent book to have as you are reading through 1 and 2 Samuel including the Psalms.
I was looking for a book to read as a companion to a Bible study on 1 and 2 Samuel, and this was perfect. Well written, with an occasional insightful application, this reads like a biography of David. Thoroughly enjoyable. I will look for others by this author.
FB Meyer has a gift in portraying Bible characters. I felt as if Meyer knew David in a personal tangible way, thus after reading I felt like I knew the psalmist in a brand new way. Very great read, will read again.
Was worried a Biblical biography could be a little silly, but was instead so tasteful, and also life-giving. Meyer not only presented the life of David according to the Bible, but also pastorally applied it to my own life, encouraging me to learn from David in both his faithfulness and unfaithfulness, ultimately pointing me to Jesus.
He tied particular psalms to the according moments in David's life, reminding me David was a human just like the rest of us, but also a man of faith like no other, specifically the original "man after God's own heart", the shepherd, psalmist king that was promised, and most wonderfully, the one from whom the King of Kings would descend.
I picked this up from Half Price Books because I was interested in David and his life. However, I found this book to be a very difficult read. Meyer uses a plethora of "big words" when smaller words would work just fine. I also found Meyer to be a bit preachy at times. Probably the best thing I can say about this book is that it does provide some insight to David's life and times, and I particularly enjoyed how Meyers dated the psalms to particular moments.
F.B. Meyer has an incredible gift of finding perspectives of God's words that are simple yet often missed. I really enjoyed reading this book for this reason. I have become a fan of F.B. Meyer and have read many of his works. This one is my favorite.
