The River #9

It Walks At Night

Rate this book
In the quiet town of Clearlake, something dark and evil roams the streets at night, searching for a victim to haul into the forest and kill. When it targets Eliza’s son, forces are quickly aligned to fight it. Eliza asks for help from Steven and Roy, her friends in Seattle who have “the gift,” an ability to see things others cannot by entering a place called “The River.”

Their battle will take them to dark mausoleums and haunted groves. The answer may lie in the hands of a reclusive woman, a specialist in death… or it may revolve around a stalker, a man intent on creating an abomination.

Eliza, Steven, and Roy have worked together before, but the creatures that walk the streets of Clearlake will challenge them, bringing them to the edge of disaster.

It Walks At Night is a fast-paced horror/paranormal mystery, and the ninth book in The River series.

IT WALKS AT NIGHT is the ninth book in the River series--not counting the novella, RESIDUAL, that comes in between books one and two. (FREE on Michael Richan's website!)

This is a more self-contained story, and as such, I feel it can be read as a standalone novel with minimum prior knowledge. The characters of Roy and Stephen are called to help their gifted friend, Eliza when reanimated corpses begin trying to kidnap her young son, Troy. A few new characters are introduced, but only to further this particular storyline.

The story didn't veer too much from its main theme at any point, but each of the scenes were quite memorable on their own. There was one character in particular that I would have liked to have learned more about, and would love to see return in a future novel.

Roy's personality is in top form (for Roy!), and there were many laugh-out-loud moments as a result of this. I also enjoyed the fact that Richan put more emphasis on Eliza's son, especially now that he's nearing the stage where he may be discovering his own abilities in the not-too-distant future.

Another great addition to the River series and return of m favorite Father/Son duo!

It Walks at Night by Michael Richan is the 9th book in the River series. Eliza son Troy, has become the target of reanimating corpses who want to kidnap him. Eliza calls on her gifted friends Roy and Steven from Seattle for help. It seems no matter what the trio does, it can't stop the corpses from rising at night and going after Troy. There are a few twist and turns in this story and it really makes it work. It would not surprise me to see one of the new characters in this book show up in future tales by Richan. I think this book can stand on its own with very little knowledge of the other books in the series. If you are a River reader, this is a must!

Here, to me, is the test of an excellent book: do the characters come alive for me, do they matter to me, do I want to join them on their journey? For every book the The River" and the "Downwinders" series, the answer is an enthusiastic "YES!"
Steven, Roy, and Eliza seem like old friends at this point. I'm so happy to see them again in another adventure.
As I've stated in previous reviews, I'm not going to rehash plot points. I'm just putting my 2 cents in, and encourage anyone who loves an original, thought provoking read, buy these books! I promise you will not be disappointed!

M.R. has done it again! Very imaginative and well told. I can always "see" the world of Roy, Steven and Eliza. I absolutely love these characters. Putting aside the fact that they're gifted, they are so very real and believable. Would be great to have anyone of them as a friend or neighbor.
Can't wait for the next one!

Interesting

The worlds and characters created are unique and believable... When you're wrapped inside, it's hard to leave...I only wish it lasted longer than 3 hours!
