I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for not only a very quick review, but also for my honest opinion. I'm thrilled to say that I absolutely loved this book. When I first read the synopsis, I was afraid this book would be like The Raven Boys, a book I still haven't finished to this day because it was such a disappointment. But I'm happy to say that Touching Fate is everything I had hoped The Raven Boys would be and more. I adored every second of this book and read it within a few hours.
This story is told from multiple points of view- Aster, a teenage girl with the ability to change fates, and Reese, a hot Dutch boy with a curse that will kill him on his eighteenth birthday. Through a chance encounter, Aster and Reese meet on the boardwalk in Ocean, City, and that's when Reese realizes his "Girls Gone Wild holiday" before he dies will have to be cut short to pursue Aster, the only person who can save him from his family's curse. Aster has no idea she can change fates until she touches a tarot card on the boardwalk, reversing her sister's fate.
But once she realizes what she can do, things start to take a bad turn for her family. After Aster changes a person's fate, that same fate is now transferred to someone in her family. So, when the handsome Dutch boy that Aster can't get out of her head continues to pursue her for his own selfish reasons, she falls right into his trap. But, as luck would have it, the pair are also fated for each other. Reese and Aster are both likable and I wanted things to work out for them not only individually, but also as a couple. They were cute together, and there was plenty of adorable kissing scenes that were swoon-worthy. i was a little annoyed with Reese trying to dupe Aster and tricking her into working with the tarot card reader, but in the end, I really wanted them to end up together.
I loved the ending of this book. It is wrapped up nicely with a perfect happy ending to this story. I also received an ARC of Cursing Fated, book #2 of the Fated series, and at first, I thought it was the continuation of this story, buy it's actually a new story involving characters mentioned in this book. I'm excited to read that book next.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes YA contemporaries, romances, or books with paranormal and magical realism. I'm posting this review on Goodreads, with a review to follow on my blog, Twitter, and Amazon.
I should also mentioned that Brenda Drake and I have followed each other on Twitter for months. She's the Pitch Wars and PitMad creator, and as a writer, I've found this to be incredibly helpful. After an editor from Entangled requested to see more of my work during one of Brenda's events, I then signed up for the blogger newsletters, and months later, I received an email to review this novel within a very short time frame, two days to be exact, and I was happy to read this book right away once I realized Brenda is the author. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Brenda is now on my auto-buy list going forward.
The review on my blog: rantandraveaboutbooks.com, Twitter @jillianquinn7, and Amazon are coming soon.
