This was my least favorite of the Cafferty and Quinn series.

description

Danni & Quin are on the hunt for a "magic" sax, that someone is killing musicians to get a hold of. Unfortunately, I just didn't love this one. First there wasn't really any paranormal angle at all, and one of the things I really like about Heather Graham books is the history, and detailed stories we get of places etc. around New Orleans. This book had almost no history, or any of the good stuff I love.

Add in the fact that it had one of the most obnoxiously whiny characters ever *cough Jenny cough* and some of the red herrings made no sense. Like why did Amy think I know it was to throw us off, but it led absolutely nowhere. I also figured out who the baddie was fairly early in this one.

Overall this one was just OK for me.

Musicians are being murdered in New Orleans and Danni and Quinn soon discover that sometimes the line between passion and obsession is too hard to draw for some people and only in uncovering the truth can they hope to save everyone from the hands of a deadly killer in this thrilling romantic suspense.

An apparent suicide and two murdered musicians quickly lead Danni and Quinn on the path of a ‘magical sax’ and a game of musical bands as they try to keep everyone safe while they work with the police to uncover the truth and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the spine tingling suspense that builds throughout the story. The characters are strong, compelling and easily draw readers to them and the fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge with lots of suspense, excitement and romance.

The danger escalates as the killer moves closer to home and Danni and Quinn uncover some shocking clues that may or may not be related to the case and while one man’s musical talent may be the key, discovering that key is an exercise that requires a lot of finesse and dedication of these two investigators. The well written scenes and details paint vivid images that capture the imagination and the well orchestrated events draw the readers in and ensure that they want to know every last detail. The New Orleans setting along with a hint of paranormal add just the right note to the story giving it a little something extra and the strain between Danni and Quinn that this case puts on their relationship adds a bit of spice and depth.

Lots of twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end and there was no way I could put this story down until I knew who done it – and I can’t wait for the next Cafferty and Quinn case.

Three stars: A good murder mystery set in New Orleans.

Danni pauses outside one of the night clubs on Royal Street, drawn in by the music. A handsome saxophone player holds the audience in his sway with his exceptional music. He catches Danni's eye, and he seems to know her. Startled Danni hurries home, only to find that the saxophone player has followed her. His name is Tyler and he does indeed know Danni. They went to high school together. Tyler begs Danni for help. He believes one of their fellow classmates, Arnie, who was recently found dead of an apparent drug overdose, was murdered. Arnie had a special saxophone that is now in his possession, and Tyler thinks that someone is murdering musicians to find it. Can Danni and Quinn discover the truth behind the saxophone and catch another killer?
What I Liked:
*I like that you can jump right into this series at anytime and not feel lost. This is my second book in this series and even though I still haven't read the first book, I have had no trouble. Ms. Graham does an excellent job with recap, and she provides plenty of background information so the reader is never lost. If you are on the hunt for a good paranormal, murder mystery series, try these books.
*At the heart of the series are Quinn and Danni. Quinn is a private investigator who has seen his fair share of paranormal ongoings. Danni his partner and lover, is rather new to the whole paranormal scene. She inherited her father's shop not knowing that in the basement is a large collection of paranormal items, some cursed and even deadly. Together, Quinn and Danni help the local law enforcement solve crimes that delve into the paranormal. I like the way the two work together, and I enjoy their chemistry. With each and installment, the romance and partnership continues to grow and strengthen. This time around, it was all about boundaries and learning to trust the other's judgement. I am liking where the relationship is going, and I am eager to see it continue to grow.
*The mystery in this one is solid. There are of course, lots of suspects, motives and leads to follow up on that will keep you guessing until the final reveal. I have to admit, I had no idea who the murder was until the finale. My conjectures were wrong. I always like a mystery that keeps me guessing.
*I loved the New Orleans setting. Ms. Graham delivers the flavor of New Orleans with all of its unique shops, eccentric citizens and darker side perfectly. It was easy to settle in and feel like I was in New Orleans traversing the streets with the characters.
*This book has a rather large cast of characters, and sometimes that doesn't always work, but in this case it does. Everyone meshes together like one big happy family, and I liked that.
*The story opens with two gruesome murders, but after that, things tame down. The violence and creepiness in this book are pared back compared to the last book. I liked that this one was a bit more tame especially when it comes to blood and gore.
*The ending is fast and furious and it draws everything to a satisfactory close. There are no loose ends and no cliffhangers. With each book in this series, you get a complete story which enables you to read them in any order.
And The Not So Much:
*I was disappointed that this one didn't have any paranormal items or occurrences. When everything was said and done, there weren't any ghosts, demons or cursed or magical items. I have come to expect that in a Cafferty and Quinn book, so I was let down.
*Even though I appreciated there were only two murders, I felt that the action and suspense dwindled significantly as the book wore on. Not much happens to notch up the terror. The last book was creepy good, and this on in comparison is a fizzle.
*The mystery was good, but overall, this book was missing something. It lacked the creepy atmosphere, scary tension and paranormal flair. This ended up reading like a regular murder mystery. I wanted ghosts and curses!

The Dead Play On was a bit of a disappointment. While it featured a good mystery, I missed the paranormal. I thought the story lacked the creepy tension and scariness that I was expecting. It is worth reading for the characters and the setting. I am hoping next time out, Ms. Graham will get this series back to its paranormal roots.

I loved the first two books in this series but I really struggled with this book as too many of the characters were getting on nerves, which really upset me as I love Quinn and Wolf :(

I usually really enjoy this series but this one missed the mark for me. I found Quinn way overprotective in this novel and it came off a bit controlling. Graham did begin to tone it down towards the end so hopefully this will not be an issue in the next novel. Danni was all over the place and I didn't get a sense of the paranormal like the past two novels. The villain was so-so but I didn't guess the right person so that is something. I will definitely continue the series but just wasn't feeling this one.

In The Dead Play On, a maniac is going around killing musicians in New Orleans in search of a magical saxophone. Whether the saxophone is actually magical or whether the killer is just a lunatic is up for debate. Danni Cafferty and Michael Quinn, who have a history of taking on paranormal cases and investigating paranormal objects, are on the case, as many of their friends are musicians.

This novel is a bit of a mixed bag. On the plus side, I thought most of the characters were well crafted. The novel wasn’t too long and moved at a good pace. I didn’t find many plot holes or flaws in the logic. On the downside, despite the fact that the novel wasn’t very long, I found that it got repetitive at times. There was a lot of repeating of information or recapping a scene that just happened in dialogue between the characters. Much of that was unnecessary and could have been cut from the novel. The other negative for me is that as far as mysteries go, this novel left a bit to be desired. Until the end, there was very little focusing in on characters who could be the killers and creating a more dramatic narrative by emphasizing who might be doing the killing. As a novel, this was a solid read. As a mystery, it left a bit to be desired.

One hell of a good Paranormal/Mystery. Heather Graham is one of the best writers there is. The Dead Play On book #3 in the ( Cafferty and Quinn Series ) by: Heather Graham will have you wanting more. The story lines pulls you in so you are mixed in with the characters as they try and solve 3 murders and several attacks on others that plays music and works in bars. So Cafferty and Quinn go undercover with the help of some new friends they are going to find out what happened.

I liked this book, but I figured out the killer early so that knocked it from being a 5star, considering I hardly ever guess the killer. Still I liked the story and thought their were cute moments

I waffled a bit on requesting this through NetGalley but, obviously, I decided to go for it. It was the New Orleans setting that did me in more than anything and I’ve been liking Heather Graham books enough so I figured why not? I haven’t read the first two books in the Cafferty & Quinn series but considering I’ve been reading her books all sorts of out of order I doubted it would make a difference. It didn’t.

It starts off with a sort of supernatural bent and it strings the main murder mystery together but it’s ultimately very thin, to the point where I wouldn’t consider this story supernatural at all. Sure, it’s mentioned that Cafferty’s dad collected weird objects and it’s mentioned repeatedly at the store she owns houses a bunch of objects in the basement that could be cursed or possessed or other ghostly things but none of that is actually seen. This serial killer keeps attacking people because of a supposed special saxophone but the way the story’s wrapped up it’s largely irrelevant and there’s no supernatural aspect to speak of. It was kind of a disappointment.

I found myself bored a lot with the story. New Orleans wasn’t its own character in the book like settings can be in other Graham novels and that was a disappointment too. I like her Krewe books because she makes the place come alive. I didn’t feel that here and I felt let down.

The dialogue was a bit bland too. Very stock, a bit too neat in exchange, making the characters monotonous and their interactions Lifetime movie awkward. Just very stilted, unnatural and a bit too set up. I felt myself cringe a bunch of times as the characters were interacting because it just didn’t feel like a natural flow of dialogue.

The sex scenes, I’m not sure why they’re in there. I have no doubt I can imagine that an adult couple has sex but the act of coupling is glossed over but there doesn’t seem to be a reason for it. It’s definitely a constant thing I’ve found in Graham novels that she wants to include a hint of sex to demonstrate that the characters can screw but it’s largely irrelevant to the plot. It doesn’t really do anything for the characters involved; I don’t find their relationship deeper or more meaningful. They like to bang. Most humans do. I mean I don’t need explicit sex scenes all the time but these start off bordering on hot then the scene ends in the next sentence as they’re lying naked with each other in the bed. I don’t know. It bugs me. If you’re intent on giving me a sex scene then give me a sex scene. Make me FEEL it. But these just feel thrown in there, they’re not hot, they’re not intense, they’re over and done with and mean nothing to the story. Since it’s not about Cafferty and Quinn’s relationship (although there is tension between the two, the story isn’t about them) there’s no need to have it there as it is.

Overall this book was meh. I didn’t hate it but I certainly didn’t like it. I didn’t care for any of the characters, all of their interactions were gawky and forced, the supernatural element is nonexistent and I don’t know why it’s even insinuated for how irrelevant it is. Yes, it plays into the motive behind the murders and I did like how that line of the story ended but at the beginning there was a supernatural element involved and then never again. I don’t know why that was there at all. I just didn’t feel involved with the book. It was talking a story at me instead of making sure I was part of it. I have quite a few of Graham’s older works piled up and ready to read and this hasn’t turned me off of her writing; I just wasn’t thrilled with this book. Maybe the first book in this particular series would be more my style with a heavier supernatural element to it but I’m not going to tackle it too soon.

2.5

Arnie Watson could play the sax, like he had been born to do just that. It had been a gift from his grandmother, and she had told him , that he could make magic come from it, and that is what he had done, until he died. He was found on a street in NOLA. with a needle in his arm, an overdose, another soldier home from two tours, with PTSD. That is all the police saw. The fact that he never used drugs, and had no other marks on him, seemed to make no difference. It also was strange that the sax , he had played that night was missing, but that was dismissed as well, until other musician's began dying. This is my fourth book in this series, and my favorite. I love Danni, and Michael,, and the usual gang. I love that the characters are so vivid, and that it takes place in New Orleans. Everything in that city, can be haunted, or just magical. The murderer was sure if he could just get hold of that sax, he would be noticed, really noticed. The last words Arnie said told him, he had killed a man for nothing, because that was just a sax, no magic. He was determined to go through every friend, or band player in the city, and keep killing until he had it. The story was really engaging. It wasn't about a magical sax, as much as the perception. It didn't matter that the top musicians , in the city, played every waking hour to hone their craft. He wanted the short cut to fame, and fortune. The sad thing was he had all that, but he was to busy being envious. The investigation was exciting as the killer who dressed in every possible costume, which fit right in , and knew the city like the back ,of his hand evaded Quinn, Danni, the detective, and all the police. The story was interwoven between musicians, and friends that grew up together in school. There was also love, not just Michael, and Danni, but Arnie had been in love. It was a mystery, and a race to keep friends safe, and stay on the trail of a murderer, that seemed to appear, and disappear like magic. The ending kept you guessing, with lots of false leads, and the final outcome was great. I love this series...It also brought in wounded soldiers, and those that had been handicapped. That part brought tears to my eyes. The spirit of those that had lost part of their bodies, for their nation, verses someone who just killed out of envy.

I enjoy reading Heather Graham and have recently been to New Orleans so this book intrigued me. At first it seems that the saxophone that belonged to now dead Arnie has some sort of mystical powers because when his friend Tyler plays it he envisions what really happened to Arnie (everyone assumed it was suicide). There is someone out there killing musicians to gain possession of this special sax. Cafferty and Quinn investigate (this is the third in the series involving these characters). I liked the story and there were twists and turns and mystery no doubt, but I didn’t connect with the characters.

★ 5/5 ★

2.5 Stars.

This book was just plain. No ups and downs, too long a book to tell a story. I felt like half the book the same thing was happening over and over again. Just plain and boring.
Not a bad book, but just not good. So sad.

This is my second Cafferty & Quinn book and I really enjoyed it … not as much as the first one I read but still, the plot and characters are compelling. This time, musicians in NOLA are being attacked and murdered by someone who appears to be seeking an allegedly “magic” saxophone. First the killer bumps off the owner of the sax and then goes on to attack an kill a number of others. Danni and Quinn once again open their home to a number of traumatized and/or frightened musicians, and the book ends with a strong climax.

My quibbles with this story is that the paranormal qualities of the sax are imputed rather than proven - although one character swears its paranormalities are real - and I figured out who the likely culprit was. Whether this was because I saw a formula that reminded me of the last C&Q book I read or not, I can’t say but there it is. Nonetheless, the people of NOLA are as interesting as ever and it was also nice to re-encounter Father Ryan, Natasha, the Voodoo Queen, and Hattie Lamont.

The third (and what appears to be final) book in the Cafferty and Quinn series starts off with a man being murdered over what the assailant believes is a magic saxophone.

You read that right. A magic saxophone. So, needless to say, paranormal investigators Cafferty and Quinn wind up being involved. Danni Cafferty specializes in dealing with haunted objects, and her fellow investigator and life partner Michael Quinn is a private investigator with that certain something extra that's always hinted at but never seems to be explained.

When other musicians turn up dead, or are robbed of their instruments (always including a saxophone), things get even more complicated.

While I love the setting of the books (New Orleans) and how characters from previous books turn up in subsequent ones, I keep getting back to "When are we going to find out what's going on with Quinn" and turning up dissatisfied. That's a personal beef, though, because the mysteries are always well constructed. This time, the "whodunnit" was broadly hinted at early on, but in such a way that made it easy to skim over and disregard.

Anyway, the books are entertaining light reads and worth your time if you enjoy the setting and/or the genre.

Ainult see, kuidas lugu paarile lahendada satub sisaldab endas müstilisi elemente.

Someone is murdering musicians in New Orleans. It starts with a simple hold up and progresses rapidly to murders. The musician friends of a supposed over dose victim believe he was murdered and ask out private investigators to investigate. It is noted that his saxophone was stolen at the time and it has never been recovered. The investigators also note that saxophones have also been stolen in the more recent murders. His friends all say that the victim felt he played so well because the saxophone was magically and that anyone who played it would also be fabulous. Is the murderer looking for a specific sax? A convoluted mystery involving our deceives going under cover as musicians to catch the culprit!

Meski begitu, penjahatnya agak susah ditebak sih. Secara keseluruhan aku suka sama novelnya, cuma menyayangkan aja knpa cerita menuju endingnya terkesan trlalu cepat selesai (adegan penangkapan penjahatnya trlalu singkat, smentara pencariannya serasa berkelok-kelok). Still, ini novel bagus. Harusnya aku baca seri pertama dlu dari seri Cafferty and Quinn ini tpi krna ga punya bukunya, malah baca The Dead Play On dluan. Fix sih nnti bakal beli semua seri Cafferty and Quinn, ceritanya cukup menjanjikan untuk dinikmati. Mantap! 💕

In this one, there is a "magic" sax that someone is willing to kill for. This was by far the best of the Cafferty and Quinn short series. Set in New Orleans, it revolved around the world of the musicians who populate the French Quarter. There is generally a supernatural element in Graham's novels but in this one it was more hinted at and speculated about than anything else. It was mostly about relationships, how they can flourish and enrich our lives and how jealousy and resentment can poison the minds of some. Not literature but a very good diversion.

To Honor and To Rest in Piece

1 Billion Gold Stars for this series of Heather Graham. Book 3 The Dead Play On tells a tale of missed guided youth that built up into anger and murder of several people that didn't know who he was. But what really was good about this book is who they brought the Military in and how people were helping them out. This book needs to be read with a opened heart and mind. A book that I well recommend to everyone.

i found this book hard to hold my interest. the story line was good but i found to much of repeating and repeating that made me want to flip pages to get to the exciting finish. This story takes place in new Orleans in the music world and someone thinking that a certain saxophone may have magical powers.and is willing to murder who ever got in the killers way to obtain this sax. It didn't hold my interest for long like most of her books do.

This was an "okay" entry into the Cafferty & Quinn series. It took quite a bit of time to get into the story. There seemed to be a lot of hanging around and waiting without all that much action taking place. Around 3/4 of the way through, things picked up a bit and made the ending much more engaging to read. Overall, if you like these characters, it is worth reading. Otherwise, it might be worth skipping this one.

As per her norm, INCREDIBLE!!!!

I Love Ms. Graham's books. You are always guaranteed an amazing ride, and the ONLY caveat I would put out there is, Don't pick up the book unless you have 4-5 hours to read it.
There are VERY HARD to put down!!
Enjoy the ride!! She never disappoints!!

Loved it

Man oh man. Heather always keeps me on my toes and this one was no different. This time we hit the music scene. Unfortunately it also hits back. There was lots of adventure and mystery surrounding this case and I kept guessing until the end. I was still wrong BUT it was fun trying to figure out who the bag guy was here. I hope to see more of this series soon.
