REVELATIONS FOR THE BLACKENED SOUL
by Stuart Bray

Holy cannoli. Not gonna lie. The stories in this collection gave me a run for my money, lol. And yes, I sure did read the entire thing within three/four hours of it releasing. 🫣 It’s also been a while since I’ve done a review like this—I’m just gonna straight up copy/paste the notes I took while reading and hope they make some sort of sense. 😅🙆🏻‍♀️

But overall, if you’re a fan of Stuart Bray’s writing, you need to read this collection asap; and if you’re new to Bray and want to test your limits, you need read this collection asap. If you’re easily triggered or offended, you need to avoid this collection asap. Godspeed. 😭💀

JOHN DOE:
“Eternal damnation isn’t enough for some of these people. Some need a head start in suffering.”

Starts the collection off with a bang. Chooses violence from the start, lol. Love. Classic Bray. Unhinged journal entries. Descent into madness. HELL YEAH.

SHOTGUN DIARIES:
“Braces around the barrel of a twelve-gauge? It’s poetic if you ask me.”

Oh okay, lol. Chaotic first line. YASS. Ffs. So glad I’m an only child. Wild. Lol. Damn. Bruh… holy shit. WHAT?! JFC. Mind blown. Loved this one A LOT.

THE PIG FACTORY:
“If it please the reader, Donald Lovegood’s neck meat resembled that of a female pig’s vaginal region. Strangely, the sight of Mr. Lovegood’s neck fat aroused Charles Mason in a way he had never felt before.”

Okok. Idek what to call this. But it’s like being on a movie set. Idk. 10/10. Love this style. Dialogue is savage, lol. Ok wait or like the narrator is speaking to/about the reader. Idk. I love this though. But it’s wild, ha. How does this get more diabolical as it goes on?! Faaack.

HEAD CHEESE:
“‘You’re a slow one, ain’t yah, Bubba?’ the man’s older brother asked, stirring a huge pot of chili on the stovetop. ‘Yeah, you’re a slow one, that’s a fact. But I’ll tell you what, that other idiot, he’s far worse off than you’ll ever be.’ Bubba glanced over at his other brother, scowling from the dining room.”

I hate the title, lmao. Ope some backwoods shenanigans. Eek. Quick and fked. Love that.

CIGARETTE BURNS:
“I crawled across the kitchen floor, bloody, beaten, and ready to dick tap death with the tip of my pressed-on nails.”

Broken Pieces of June Part FOUR! Omg yessss. Hehe. Savage. Okay yes I love this. Perfection. Exactly what I needed for a part four. I love that this was one of the longer ones. Satisfying. But totally fked.

BENEATH THE ROOTS:
“I can’t tell what’s real anymore.
I see these images that I think are real, but come to find out, they’re fake. Pretty soon fake will be our new reality. Deception will just be an exaggerated form of truth.”
-Modern Society in the eyes of the author

My most anticipated read from this collection! This story is fking wild. Not unhinged and violent. But fking wild. So many WTF’s. Everything I could’ve anticipated and more. Love. I could’ve read 500 pages of this Bray writing style. Mind fked.

HIS NAMES VICIOUS: DOG DAYS:
“Whatever the case, this maniacal killer dog had its sights set on the lonely teenage girl in the driver’s seat of an old station wagon, and it wasn’t going away anytime soon.”

Love a Moon City Easter egg. Lol. I love this dialogue so much. Goes rogue QUICK. Fack. This is wild. Rogue dog. TBC. Obsessed!!!

HARLEY HECK AND THE TWIN OUTLAWS:
“I learned that it pays to have friends and family in your life. Otherwise, you find yourself in a really shitty situation with no one around to offer you a helping hand.”

Ok so splatter westerns usually aren’t my thing but I am in love with THE BALLAD OF HARLEY HECK by Bray and think it’s one of his most underrated books so I am super excited with this one. Unhinged && brutal AF. Depraved AF. 10/10. Another perf follow up.
