Where the Flame Sleeps is one of my favourite reads in this genre so far this year. It isn't a book that breaks new ground or does anything particularly innovative. The plot is fairly linear, and many of its elements are familiar, but the execution is what made it such an enjoyable read.
A. Rey's writing is engaging and easy to immerse yourself in. The pacing kept me turning the pages, and I never found myself losing interest. The characters were likeable, and while there wasn't one particular aspect that stood out as exceptional, everything came together to create a story that felt thoughtful, cohesive, and well written.
That said, there were a couple of things that kept this from being a five-star read for me. My biggest issue was the portrayal of the male lead. As an incredibly powerful Fae, I expected him to feel a little more... Fae. Instead, he came across as surprisingly docile for much of the story. I also found that the human heroine was the one doing most of the rescuing. I don't mind capable female protagonists—in fact, I enjoy them—but I would have liked to see the balance between the two characters reflect his supposed strength and nature a bit more.
Even so, these points didn't take away from my overall enjoyment. This isn't the most original fantasy romance I've read, but it's one of the strongest examples of the genre I've picked up this year. It's a well-thought-out, well-written story with engaging characters and an enjoyable narrative, and I'd happily recommend it to anyone looking for a solid romantasy.

This was such a fun, engaging read and one I genuinely struggled to put down. Beautifully written and incredibly easy to lose myself in, I was completely swept up in Lyra and Fen’s story.
I connected with both of them so quickly, but it was their dynamic that really had me hooked. I loved watching their relationship develop, especially with all that tension, yearning and angst simmering away between them.
And honestly, this had pretty much everything I want in a fantasy romance:
✨ Forced proximity
✨ Reluctant allies
✨ Grumpy × sunshine
✨ A quest
✨ So. Much. Yearning.
✨ Tension and angst
✨ A loveable side character

There are books that feel like stepping through a doorway into another realm, and this is one of them.
As someone who believed in magic as a child this book felt incredibly nostalgic. I found myself thinking about the films that shaped my love of fantasy growing up: The Neverending Story, LOTR, The Last Unicorn etc. This book brought that wonderful feeling of being transported somewhere ancient, mysterious and just a little bit dangerous. Whilst it's not a groundbreaking, wholly original story, there is something wonderfully timeless about it.
This is a tale of fading magic, hidden truths and a quest to undo what evil has brought upon the land and it's people. True Tolkien vibes here!
A person highlight is how the Author has written the voices of each mythical character. Whimsical dialect and charming riddles are in abundance. Trust that you will find yourself longing for a pixie BFF immediately.

This was a sweet and very melodic high fantasy novel. While classed as adult especially for what takes place in the last few chapters it mostly read as YA and I think the plot line of the majority of the book was also at this level. Nevertheless I enjoyed this story, the pace, the world and the mysteries.
The FMC and MMC were both good leads with very thought out backstories however they were a little light on character development.
I enjoyed the different stages on the novel and the slow unraveling of the mysteries as the two hero’s progressed on the literal and non literal journeys.
My main drawback for this novel would be the repetitiveness both in dialogue and in each new act of the story. While it was a new scenario or trial it almost always went the same way with its action and at times dialogue.
A very enjoyable and rich world to read about however I think a lot of the travel parts could have been shortened so that the last 6 chapters which were epic could have been more throughly explored.

I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for the next one to come out. I enjoyed every intriguing page following Lyra, Fen and even Bluebell the pixie as their stories developed and became more entwined.
The story is full of magic, mystery and secrets, with plenty to keep you curious about what is going to happen next. I especially enjoyed watching the characters and their relationships evolve as more of the story was revealed.
A fantastic fantasy read that kept me interested from beginning to end. I am definitely ready for the next instalment!

I could not put this down! Such an enjoyable, exciting read. I love this genre but felt this was one of the best I've read. It is your classic, let's meet a sexy non human character and go on a quest with them. But really well written with twists and lovely description so it doesn't feel contrived. I can't wait for part 2!

This was a great start to a new series. I loved the multitude of different fantasy creatures (especially the pixies) and look forward to learning more about them throughout the series. Having a main MMC with a physical impairment, despite being a fae, was an interesting and much appreciated addition. The ending definitely made me excited for book 2.

This was an amazing book that I am pre-ordering the second book too.
The first 2 chapters were hard for me to get into, but that is im guess because of the writing style change between my last book and this book.
Definitely a slow burn. And a twist i wasn't expecting. It really did satisfy but always made me want the next book.
It has Fae, pixie, dragons, Orc, dwarves and more. It was a well rounded well thought out fantasy book. Sad I have to wait for the second book, but excited I got to read this book as an ARC

Please, I want the sequel right now!
I am certain this is one of the best fantasy books I've read this year, and I'm not saying it lightly. There are so many things I like about it that it's easier to say what I didn't like, which is that it ended in an edge of the seat cliffhanger (for now, which I knew from the start). I liked the story, the world-building and its slow reveal, the characters and their interaction, the deep emotional pull and especially the writing (don't get me started on the metaphors!).
It was easy to connect with the characters and get invested in the story, and there is still very much to discover about them. I can feel there's more, much more, and I feel like a kid again - full of wonder for the magic and horror for the evil, fidgeting and unable to put it down or get it out of my head.
A very promising new author, a fascinating weaver of images and feelings pulling all my strings. Very well done!

Did I just read this in basically one sitting? Yes, yes I did. This is an absolutely gripping fantasy reminiscent of Lord of the Rings in its epic nature and the amount of different magical species you encounter along the MCs travels; pixies, goblins, trolls, and humans too. I cannot tell you how much I loved the last chapter and its twists and turns. I have theories and need answers!!! I highly recommend giving this a read! The characters (be they pixies, goblins, trolls, or humans) are well developed, with the fog of forgetting drifting through all their stories. The world-building is vibrant and redolent with sound and smell. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Where the Flame Sleeps by A. Ray is a fantasy romance book with the kind of worldbuilding that gave me all the sensory details I needed to imagine each scene as if it were a movie playing in my head. The developing connection between the reluctant main characters, the mystery of the disappearing wild magic, and my curiosity of wondering what creature or situation the duo might encounter next had me turning the pages as soon as I could.

Identity, self-discovery, and the burden of heritage appeared as prominent themes throughout the book as both of the main characters are truly on a soul-searching journey as much as a physical journey. A societal outcast with a mostly-absent father and a hedge witch, whom I envisioned like an ugly Mary Poppins for a mother figure, has been raised understanding exactly what it means to be misunderstood, different, blamed.
So, when she frees a trapped Fae scheduled for execution from the stocks in her little town, she now has much bigger fish to fry than being an outsider accused of the atrocity of being different. She’s expecting him to heal and bail so she’s surprised when he still lingers… surprise - they’re now bound by a life-debt, but first, they have to get out of town pronto! They must journey together to discover why the magic is fading as well as uncover the secrets of Lyra’s past.

I enjoyed the FMC’s character as a whole. She was kind and I appreciate how she was in her own head - cause, same girl! She wanted to trust and be trusted. Initially, I liked our MMC as well, but his actions in the end gave me whiplash. I was absolutely floored at the abruptness of everything. I believe we all know who is going to make an appearance, but I’ll enjoy seeing that come to fruition.
The plot seemed very predictable and, to be honest, this read more like a YA novel than something high-fantasy. I could detect that it was going to be a slow-burn, reluctant-allies-to-lovers trope. Her kindness on the trail with the pelt made me smile. The third-act twist was predictable albeit abrupt. I’m not a fan of the “villains” monologuing the plot. One of our bad guys fell from a role of power to a fumbling, tongue-tied imp - that was strange. Hoping they, too, turn into an ally. Though, their comeback, however, felt way too soon in the plot. I also felt like the pixie’s quirkiness vanished which made me sad. I did appreciate the representation of able-bodied vs. non-able-bodied.
All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I do look forward to how the plot will further evolve.

I’ve read this book twice. There’s something comforting to me about a journey with good characters that goes clear back to when I was young and read Tolkien’s Fellowship of the Ring. Of all of Tolkien’s storyline, it was that simple journey that the Hobbits took in the beginning, the adventures they got themselves into, the interesting characters along the way, that I gravitate back to with a smile. That’s the same feeling I got with Where the Flame Sleeps. I relish that feeling when I can get it.
A. Ray has taken me on a wonderful journey and introduced me to characters that are fun to discover and immerse myself with. She has done a great job of creating a cast of unique and memorable characters with a good fantasy story to tell. There were many surprises along the way. Her main characters, Lyra and Fen, are not two-dimensional characters set in some Fantasy world, they get into your skin, become part of your family, and I genuinely cared about their fates. Some of her sub-character voices are fantastic. I could listen to Bluebell’s voice all day long. There were many scenes that were wonderful and I found myself wishing I had some secret extended version to enjoy more of those characters. But alas, like all books you enjoy, the story moves as it should. And the pacing is good. I get distracted easily because I read slow. I wasn’t distracted reading this. I’m sure I’ll read it again when I want to enjoy immersing myself back into Lyra and Fen’s journey and the world of Elidria.

A. Ray has taken me on a wonderful journey and introduced me to characters that are fun to discover and immerse myself with. She has done a great job of creating a cast of unique and memorable characters with a good fantasy story to tell. There were many surprises along the way. Her main characters, Lyra and Fen, are not two-dimensional characters set in some Fantasy world, they get into your skin, become part of your family, and I genuinely cared about their fates. Where the Flame Sleeps was everything I want in a fantasy. Hidden identities, mysterious happenings, a dangerous quest, found family, a broody closed off MMC, a strong capable FMC, and fantastical creatures. I absolutely devoured this book. The chemistry between Lyra and Fen is palpable and creates such a delicious tension. Though they are so fun to read about, Bluebell steals the show. I absolutely love everything about this character.

This is a beautifully written romantic fantasy that includes an exiciting and dangerous journey through a “borderland” between realms. Lyra is a young woman who grew up in a human village on the border of the Fae realm where the fae are hated and feared. But when a male fae is captured and held she makes a decision that will lead to an uneasy partnership with the male she rescued, and hopefully, finding the true reason that the magic is disappearing from Elidria.
The characters are all complex, well written, and very realistic in the way they interact. Whether “good” or “bad” these characters are all fascinating and kept me completely engrossed from the first to the last page, and I am already looking forward to the continuation of Fen’s and Lyra’s story. Magic, dragons, fae, pixies, and a whole host of other mythological creatures as well as an epic journey and some twists and turns in the plot that were completely unexpected and left me reeling. I will recommend this incredible fantasy romance to other readers.

I absolutely loved this book! The characters are well developed, even the ones we don't get to spend as much time with. Lyra and Fen are fantastic. They each have their own struggles that genuinely shape who they are and what they choose to do, and I enjoyed following along as their relationship progressed from antagonism to trusting and caring about each other. The world building is well balanced. It's vibrant and interesting without going overboard. The story itself is engrossing as Lyra and Fen find their questions and some of the answers, and I enjoyed the humor that Bluebell brought to the story once she joined them. The big reveals at the end of the book were surprises, but also made several things earlier in the story take on a whole new meaning. That said, the ending is a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read the next book in the series! I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy sword and sorcery style romantic fantasy with fae and other magical creatures.

This is book 1 of The Balance of the Wild series. It follows Lyra, who frees a wounded Fae and then finds herself on a journey in his lands to find out who she is.
This book has everything I usually look for in a romantasy book. There is magic, different beings, an epic journey, self discovery, and even some mystery.
This book was fun to read. It kept me engaged throughout each part. I could see the different places, found entertainment in the different characters and beings along the way, and was captivated with learning about what happened in the Fae lands.
I look forward to reading book 2

I throughly enjoyed reading this story. I haven’t read a lot of fantasy books but this was wonderful. Truly a delightfully fun read. She brought her characters to life and they became real to me. The pixie, Bluebell, was especially heartwarming. Her voice made me smile. The pacing was just right. I found the storytelling to be really rich. Her voice was unique, not like anything I have read before. Her descriptions were so good that I got every character and setting vividly in my mind. I am dying to read the next book in the series, which comes out in a few weeks. I can hardly stand the wait.

I thought A. Ray did a wonderful job with Where the Flame Sleeps. I was constantly engaged in the story, and I found it difficult to put the book down, even when I knew I really needed to get some sleep!
I loved the plot and especially appreciated how fresh and original it felt. It didn’t feel like I was reading the same story I’ve come across before, which made it even more enjoyable. The story kept me interested and wanting to know what would happen next.
Overall, this was a captivating read, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here. A great start to the series!

Her life changed forever when she freed the fae from the stocks and now she is bonded with him. Follow their journey to escape all those who wish him harm against the background of fading magic. Once I started reading found it almost impossible to put down until I knew where it was taking me. A brilliant tale which I really enjoyed

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is almost like a coming of age tale. There is warmth, struggle and love written in this tale. The betrayal is a heartache, full of sorrow. As the journey Fen and Lyra are on, grows closer to the answers, the journey unravels truth. A horrible truth, that can either set them free or kill them. I will await book two with bated breath.

My girlfriend read it, as she was looking for a good romantic fantasy. I skimmed through it. We both were a little disappointed. It's cute and kind of YA. But it feels terribly repetitive of the genre. Almost copied with no originality. Decent effort though.

A delightful fantasy with romance, adventure, and plenty of interesting characters. Extremely well-written with engaging prose and lots of action. The author excels in her description of places and people. Although both of the main characters are nuanced with depth and realistic tension in their interactions, the story comes alive with the addition of their colleagues, compatriots, and adversaries (both magical and mundane.)
While this is typically not my genre of choice, it hits all the right marks with witty conversation, flowing descriptions, mystery, adventure, and a slow burn love match.

This book was an amazing debut novel and a brilliant start to a series.
Epic world-building, quests, magic, romance and beautiful Fea creatures.
The storyline was enjoyable and well-paced. It didn't feel stagnant anywhere. There was perhaps a little repetitiveness, but not overly so.
I look forward to reading the next installment.
