This review is based on an ARC the author kindly sent me.
This is the third instalment of the Etty & Tris mysteries, and this time, we're based out at Audley House, with Etty and Tris both trying to discover why, exactly, William at the end of Book 2, while also solving the mystery of what was going on with the - apparently - abandoned cottage on the edge of Audley Estate.
Like Book 2, this instalment had a bit more... meat... to it than the initial book in the series - there are political shenanigans going on in the background to the main romance plot thread, albeit not on a level with the Charity and Perry series. Also, I think the dual POV really works for the series, and I'm glad Ms Morrison continued using it after Book 2.
Seeing Etty and Tris's relationship developing in this instalment was rewarding, but not as much as watching her

The POV problem have become exacerbated in this installment. I like these two characters. The premise. The setting. But this novel didn’t deliver.
POV—the dual first person POV descended into serious sentimentality in this volume, altering the stoicism and feistiness of our two MCs. Love changes people, but in this case, some characterization is lost.
POV problem 2–maybe this is more of a tense problem. Most of the time, the POV is first person, present tense, but then, all of a sudden, the characters will slip into storyteller mode almost as if they are looking back on events that happened years ago. I think it is meant to be foreshadowing, but it feels strange. Additionally, sometimes, in the middle of the flow of the story, characters will break the fourth wall and speak directly to the reader…again in that storytelling mode. For example, “…Arabella’s favour had he stayed out of my way. Yet, as YOU well know, he did anything but that which he should. What had started as a mystery about poaching…” this paragraph is not in the middle of dialogue shared with another character. It is Etty’s own thoughts. YOU can only be the reader.
PLOT—By Tris’s own admission, none of this story would exist if folks had just spoken to each other like rational individuals. Etty’s fake fiancé, William, is especially next level crazy. It almost doesn’t make sense. The book was already short—a two hour and 15 minute read, but the last 15 minutes introduced a whole new story pretty much. The last few chapters would have been better placed as the beginning of the next story. It just seems that there wasn’t really enough of an idea for a whole novel here. Some great events, but more was needed for a full story.
I’m here for Etta and Tris and have no doubt that I will try the next one too…I’m hoping for a little more plot and characters more fully immersed in the circumstances in which they find themselves.

Book 3 begins right on the heels of the ‘omg, what on earth?’ ending in book 2 - thank goodness! Kudos to Etty as she decides to play along with the farce of an engagement in order to try and discover what William is hiding. In my head I’d taken to calling him William the Weasel in the previous books, and boy does he carry on living up to that moniker in this book. Every time Etty (and I!) thought there may be a glimmer of decency, or even awareness of others or situations around him, he managed to increasingly show his self centred nature and selfishness. And manages to make said situations a hundred times worse to boot 🤷♀️ At least he’s consistent I guess! 😆
I do love how Etty realises that her mother and father are both on her side and helping her, plus how James is doing the same for Tristan. It’s heartwarming for them both to have lovely family support.

And the main question throughout it all, does Tristan redeem himself with Etty? Thankfully this gets answered too 😁

Beginning in London in the late 1860s, "What's a Little Poaching Between Friends," the third book in Lynn Morrison's Etty and Tris series, continues the backstory of the Duchess of Rockingham, one of the significant supporting characters in author's WWI and following eight-book Dora and Rex series (now concluded or suspended).
Etty is Edith Redgrave, daughter of a viscount, the future duchess. Tris is Tristan Bankes-Fernsby, the Duke of Rockingham. In the first book, despite their different rankings in England's class structure, they had worked together to resolve a problem resulting from an indiscretion by Etty's good friend Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria. Along the way they invented a seemingly improbable faux courtship. In the second book they worked together to solve a murder as their friendship grew, then appeared to sour. This book picks up a moment after the end of the second book. As Etty regains consciousness after passing out her one time nemesis William Seaton announces that he and Etty are now engaged. Tris immediately leaves without a word. Action moves to the country where the newly engaged couple are among the guests at a house party. Tris makes a surprise appearance. Late at night, he and Etty follow William out through the woods to a burning cottage on another estate. Investigation of William's activities and the cottage leads to discovery of poaching with a surprise conclusion.
Entertaining, with an intriguing mystery, including a helpful list of the significant characters. Should not be read as a standalone as the beginning is so clearly a continuation of the previous book, "What's a Little Duelling Between Friends."

I was really looking forward to this third in series as the previous one left off on a bit of a cliffhanger. It did not disappoint.
This was a classic "country house party" with Etty and William's first public appearance as an affianced couple taking up immediately following the second book with the surprising announcement. Tristan has been conspicuously MIA following the news but makes a belated appearance with his brother's and Princess Louise's urging. The mystery does not involve murder but rather the odd discovery of "contraband" in a deserted cottage that is burned down near their hosts' home. A tense and acrimonious argument develops between the two neighbors as to the possible theft of the goods involved.
This book mostly involves the weird and evil machinations of William, Etty's supposed fiance and his obsessive fixation with Lady Arabella who lives on the adjacent estate. William is definitely painted as a despicable villain which gives rise to Tristan and Etty's teaming up to thwart him as well as solving the nearby arson. His strange behavior is explained away by being "spoiled", but at his age and with the extremeness of his actions, I didn't feel that that was a sufficient excuse for me. Be that as it may, his deeds allow some of the more heroic instances for Tristan to shine and things between he and Etty move along at a sweet pace.
Again, this series is becoming one that I really excitedly anticipate and am looking forward to where this book's cliffhanger will lead.

I loved this. This book is much more about family and relationships, although there is still a mystery to solve. Etty finds herself trapped in an engagement she did not ask for or want, to a man she really doesn’t like. William, is selfish, self centred and seems to believe the world owes him when he has done nothing to deserve it - this time he’s gone too far. Tris finally realises he is in love with Etty and if he wants her, he’s going to have to fight for her. Neither of them are alone. Etty’s parents, Tris’s brother, Princess Louise … they are all rooting for them.
The full extent of William’s lies, deceptions and appalling behaviour are finally brought to light and this time he is struggling to talk his way out of it. Even then, Etty and Tris are trying to help, not for his sake, but those he has wronged.
Through all the family drama, Lynn weaves a clever mystery that will keep you guessing to the end.

Absolutely love this sweeping regency series with Etty, Tristan, and a powerful host of characters! Etty is especially awesome as she has the courage to live her own principles and not kowtow to societal norms of the period This volume showcased Etty's mother and father along with Tristan's brother James. Good development ! There's lots of witty conversation and some innuendos. Overall a brilliant plot and the fact that sometimes a person doesn't deserve any more chances! Friendship is a strong bond within Etty's circle of both society folk and servants. Excited for the next book in the series to develop the cliff hanger and further Etty and Tristan along the rocky path of love.

OMG this is my favorite of the series! Etty and Tris follow William to the party at the Derby's to try and figure out why he's pretending to be in love with her and to hopefully end the fake engagement. I love how her parents are in on the ruse, and Lord James, Tristan's brother, is on hand to help them out.
I kind of feel sorry for William, and hope that he can eventually redeem himself- he's such a mess, but there are glimpses of actual feelings underneath his obnoxious facade.

What’s a Little Poaching Between Friends was worth the wait! At the end of book two (What’s a Little Dueling Between Friends), I was left wondering where on earth the story was going to go. The author did not disappoint! The story is fast paced, unpredictable, and yet believable. The dialogues witty, the scenery beautiful, and the supporting characters (looking at you, Lord James) add so much to the plot. I’ve enjoyed watching both Etty and Tris develop as they handle society's impossible situations. I eagerly await the next installment in the What’s a Little… Series!

Fabulous 3rd book in the Etty and Tris Victorian Mysteries series. Well researched, plotted and written. The characters are well developed. This book is a real page turner. After you read the book don't forget to read the historical notes at the end and the acknowledgement. It will add to your understanding of the time period and give you insights into the authors writing process. I highly recommend this book!

Although this sort of works as a standalone, it makes a lot more sense to have read books 1 and 2, as this is effectively the continuation of the story and its consequences. William's well intentioned and what he believed were clever lies and plans really makes me want to box his ears as it led everyone in a merry dance. And I do so like Lord James, so down-to-earth and totally likeable!

Their Back!
Etty and Tris are back! This is such a fun series. It’s an easy read to fall into and not want to put down. Well written and captures the time period wonderfully without bogging down the plot with period details, instead they enhances the atmosphere. I don’t usually like Historical Romantic Mysteries, but this one is special. The only problem is we have to wait for the next one to come out, and it won’t be soon enough.

A Duke/A Surprise/A Fire/A Beau…
Etty receives the surprise of her life by Duke William and she feels she has to play along for a while. Then the Duke Tristan comes mostly to her rescue and now that the puzzle has been solved..just as she’s getting used to everything Tristan is called across the pond for a job & now he’s on his way home & Etty & her family have been invited too. There’s only one problem..

This is the best in series so far. Lynn had me with the first line. Ettty wakes from a faint caused when her engagement was announced to a childhood "friend" that is the bain of her existence. Their families travel to a house party, the Duke arrives to determine if she needs saving from engagement and they find themselves involved in a poaching mystery. MUST READ.

The mystery of this book wasn’t as well developed as the last. But, the book didn’t feel like it was only written to move Etty and Tris’s relationship forward. They are good characters. Mom was amazing in this book! I look forward to the next.

The story did not disappoint
I fell in love with the character of Etty and waited impatiently for this third book. The plot was clever and not at all repetitive of the previous 2 books. I enjoyed seeing relationships shift and bonds of trust develop. The generosity of two characters was lovely.

Short on Mystery
While the mystery took a backseat to the shenanigans of false engagements, a self enter Lord, and love matches, it was a good read. William finally gets what he deserves. The goods found in the burned down cottage finds the Darbys and the Cliffords both in the wrong and the right. Petty and the Duke again solve the mystery.

This is a great story and addition to the series. It is well laid out and enjoyable. When the series first was announced, I was a little nervous, but it has far exceeded any expectations that I had. I have really been enjoying the series and looking forward to more.

I’d say like 3.5 maybe 4 stars? The mystery in this book didn’t make a lot of sense to me. Felt a little sloppier than the other books but I still had a good time I guess and I’ll still read the next one

Always fun when the series reaches that point when everyone finally figures it out. I continue to enjoy these characters. I find it sweet when the males learn that the women they discount are smarter than they are.

The problem with spoiled aristocrats
I enjoyed this third book in the series. The characters are well written and easy to become attached to. The mysteries are always interesting and I look forward to the next book in the series.
