Willow's books are fast-paced, nail-biting pageturners with twists you won't see coming. That's why her fans call her The Queen of Scream.
Willow lives on Florida's Space Coast. When she is not writing or reading, you will find her surfing and watch the dolphins play in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
This novel, Her Second Husband, by Willow rose, is for those readers who enjoy a fast-paced thriller with some character development. This is not the first novel I've read by Willow rose, and in spite of her name, I like her books. They are not high-level literary fiction, but that is fine by me and I suspect it is also what her readers expect. Sometimes, a good fast-paced read that keeps you turning pages is exactly what you need.
This novel sets up a conflict from the very beginning. This conflict is between, Emily, who is involved in a relationship with Nate, a man who has a past, and Kaylie, Emily’s daughter. Nate’s criminal past would raise red flags in most situations. The question is why Nate had been in prison and what kind of impact does it have on his relationship with Emily. The author spends the novel exploring the circumstances under which Nate was imprisoned. She sets up for the reader the suspense of finding out what will happen in the relationship that Emily has with Nate and has the reader wondering if Nate is a criminal, as he seems, obsessed and full of vengeance for the deaths of his daughter and wife. Kaylie, who is concerned for her mother, attempts to unravel the true circumstances, which creates conflict between Kaylie and Emily who, understandably, wants her relationship to work. One of the ways the author does this is by using a dual perspective point, from both Emily's and Kaylie’s perspectives alternating throughout the novel. I think the author recognized that it was essential that readers see both characters’ points of view because they will be very different. Especially because both characters see Nate very differently this works as a strategy. The author keeps the reader guessing as to what actually will happen and as to what the truth is about Nate. There are the usual twists and turns and the end was a little, unexpected. Which is the mark of a decent psychological thriller. The reader does not want to be able to predict exactly what is going to happen at the end. The pacing of the novel was also appropriate it was long enough to keep the reader interested but not so long as to exceed its welcome. I look forward to Willow Rose’ next book.
I received this novel on a blog tour from book a chair publishing via Netgalley. The thoughts and opinions in this review are completely my own.
What a fraught filled, tense read this book is! Not only because I was finishing it up while a raging thunderstorm pummeled the outside but the story is full of drama. I was Team Kaylie for the entire book. She was right to question her mother’s actions and Nate. I admired how Kaylie burrowed for answers and then connected the dots. I thought Emily was foolhardy to get involved with Nate but also wi defend what both of them were hiding. The answers came together beautifully at the end in an exciting crash of events! I liked the coming together of family at the end because it was long overdue. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars | Drama, Secrets, and One Suspiciously Charming Husband
Thank you to NetGalley, Willow Rose, and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of Her Second Husband in exchange for an honest review.
Listen. This book had more drama than a family group chat after someone says, "We need to talk."
When Kaylie starts getting bad vibes from her mother's new husband, Nate, she does what any determined daughter would do—she investigates. And once she starts pulling on those loose threads, everything begins to unravel. The questions pile up fast: Who is Nate really? What is he hiding? And why does everything about him feel just a little too perfect?
What I loved most was that this story constantly made me second-guess myself. Every time I thought I had Nate figured out, the plot would throw another curveball. The man was charming enough to make me question my own instincts, and that's exactly what kept me turning the pages.
Now, let's talk about why this isn't a full five stars. The beginning was sloooow. The first 75 pages felt like they were taking the scenic route to the destination. More than once I considered putting the book down, but curiosity won every single time. I needed to know whether Nate was Prince Charming or a walking red flag wrapped in a nice smile.
Once the story found its footing, though? Buckle up. The twists started coming, the tension ramped up, and suddenly I was flying through chapters wondering how on earth this mess was going to be untangled.
Final Verdict: If you enjoy domestic thrillers packed with family drama, secrets, manipulation, and enough twists to give you trust issues, Her Second Husband is worth the ride. Just be prepared to push through a slower start because once the story gets moving, it grabs hold and doesn't let go. Nate may be charming as hell, but don't get too comfortable—this book has surprises waiting around every corner. 📚🍿👀
4 stars — slow burn at first, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Willow Rose, and the publisher for the ARC.
Her Second Husband is a fast-paced domestic thriller that hooked me from the very beginning. Told through the alternating perspectives of Kaylie and her mother, Emily, the story immediately creates tension as Emily prepares to marry Nate after a whirlwind romance. While everyone else seems thrilled about the wedding, Kaylie is convinced something isn't right about her future stepfather. As the story unfolds, Kaylie starts digging into Nate's past and uncovers details that only deepen her suspicions. The more she learns, the more uneasy the situation becomes. Is she simply struggling to share her mother with someone new, or is her instinct warning her that real danger is lurking beneath Nate's charming exterior?
One of the things I enjoyed most was the mother-daughter dual POV. It added depth to the story and kept me questioning who knew what and who could be trusted. The short chapters also made this an incredibly quick read, and I found myself flying through pages because I needed to know how everything would come together. The story is packed with secrets, red herrings, and twists. While I did suspect part of the major reveal before it happened, there were still enough surprises to keep me engaged. I also appreciated that the book focused heavily on the relationships between the characters rather than relying solely on shock value.
That said, there were a few plot threads that felt underdeveloped, and some storylines seemed to be introduced only to fade into the background. A few chapters didn't have quite the impact I expected, and some of the suspense felt a little forced at times. Overall, though, this was an entertaining and addictive thriller that kept me invested from start to finish. Fans of Freida McFadden-style domestic suspense will likely enjoy this one. It's a quick, twisty read with family drama, secrets, and enough tension to keep you turning pages late into the night.
This is my second book by Willow Rose that I have read. I have bought a few more that are on my TBR list. In this story, the points of view are from Emily and her daughter Kaylie. The story after the prologue starts at a wedding. The wedding is for Emily and Nate, Nate is someone that Emily hasn't known all that long but they are getting married. Kaylie is at the wedding and making observations about Nate, she has this vibe that she doesn't trust him. There are a couple of things that happen at the wedding that really draws her attention to how much she doesn't trust him. She is concerned about her mother and doesn't want her mother to be taken advantage of. Kaylie decides to look into who Nate is and more about his past. There are some twists and turns in pursuit of more information about Nate and there are some secrets that her mother and her real father have kept from her that get revealed a long the way. There are some secrets revealed about Nate along the way. I love when authors make you feel conflicted about who the villain truly is, I was suspicious of Nate and his motives but I got led one way and then another about several characters in the book that could be potential villains. I don't want to spoil the outcome of who the villain was which is revealed close to the end of the book. I loved the story, thought the pacing and tension kept building until around the time the villain is revealed and then the story got fast-paced to the ending and then wrapped up in a very satisfying manner. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the complimentary copy and to Willow Rose for another great thriller!

Thanks to NetGalley, Willow Rose and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Her Second Husband was a fast-paced domestic thriller packed with secrets, suspicion and plenty of twists that kept me hooked from the very beginning. The prologue immediately pulled me in and gave the story an unsettling atmosphere that never really let up.
Emily is finally ready to move on with her life and marry Nate, but it quickly becomes clear that both of them are hiding things. Nate’s mysterious past and Kaylie’s growing distrust of him created so much tension throughout the story, and I constantly found myself wondering who could actually be trusted. I really enjoyed the mother/daughter dynamic and thought Kaylie added a lot to the story with her determination to uncover the truth.
The short chapters made this such an easy binge read and there was always another reveal or piece of drama pushing the story forward. Some twists I guessed, but others genuinely surprised me, especially towards the end when everything started coming together.
Willow Rose does a great job creating suspense while also making the emotional family elements feel believable and engaging. This was one of those thrillers where every character seemed to have secrets and hidden motives, which kept me second guessing right until the final chapters.
If you enjoy addictive psychological thrillers filled with family drama, dangerous secrets and twisty reveals, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up.
Her Second Husband is a tense, addictive psychological thriller that hooks you from the opening scene and never loosens its grip. The wedding should be a dream—white roses, chandeliers, a handsome groom who swept in like a saviour—but beneath the polished surface, danger pulses with every vow.
Nate is everything the guests admire and everything Kaylie distrusts. As a daughter watching her mother fall too fast, Kaylie’s unease becomes the book’s early warning system. And she’s right to worry. Nate’s past is a minefield: prison time, a dead wife, a murdered daughter. The kind of history no amount of charm can erase.
But the real twist is that the bride knows all of this—and still walks down the aisle.
The tension builds beautifully as the story shifts between mother and daughter, each holding secrets the other doesn’t see. The atmosphere is thick with dread, the kind that makes you question every smile, every coincidence, every too-perfect moment. Willow Rose leans into the paranoia, the claustrophobia of a marriage built on fear and necessity, and the creeping suspicion that someone is lying… maybe everyone.
Fast‑paced, twisty, and impossible to put down, Her Second Husband delivers exactly the kind of domestic suspense fans of The Housemaid and The Perfect Marriage devour. A chilling reminder that sometimes the most dangerous place is the one you choose to call home.
With thanks to Willow Rose, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
I was ensnared by this story from the first page, and my interest didn't wane until the last, it starts with a murder, a murder of a young girl, a beautiful, motivated young girl who was a champion swim star .....the main characters all become entwined, who was Marissa and who killed her. Kaylie Riley was a collage student studying journalism but she wasn't happy, her mother, Emily had married a man that she had only known for eight months, Nate Sullivan looked at her mother as though she hung the moon but Kaylie wasn't convinced, her mother deserved happiness but was Nate the man to give it ? Emily had been divorced from Kaylie's father, Tom, for many years, she had refused to let Kaylie have any contact with him, how many secrets was her mother hiding ? Kaylie needed to know and much to her mother's distress, she started digging, she dug into the backgrounds of all the main characters, the things that she uncovered were both terrifying and unbelievable, she must protect her mother but from whom ? This is a fast paced story, it has more twists than a corkscrew, the suspects are many, all of which I thought could be the villain until the very end, it has fast action, mounting tension and acute danger. A great "whodunit" I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest feedback. I would rate this wonderful book with five out of five! The story was fast paced, with plots and twists that I did not see coming. This was a quick read, in that I kept wanting to find out what happens next. The novel focuses on Emily, a woman who’s first husband left her with a young child, Kaylie, to raise on her own. We find out the complicated reasons behind her husband’s departure later in the story. Emily is now marrying Nate after an eight-month acquaintanceship, and her now grown daughter does not trust Nate at all. She notices elements of his personality that may hurt her mother more than her mother realizes. As the story progresses, we are introduced to other characters who add more levels of distrust to Kaylie’s repertoire. As Kaylie investigates, she is threatened by someone that she does not know; yet. I won’t spoil the ending except that I did not expect it at all. A wonderful read!
Nate walked into my life eight months ago like a knight in shining armour. Our wedding guests can't help but gaze at him, his salt and pepper hair set in perfect waves. Everyone apart from my daughter Katie. Se knows how lonely I've been since her father left, but I watch her grimace at Nate's speech before she forces a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. And she doesn't know the worst of it. He's been in prison. His first wife is dead. His daughter murdered. It must look like I've committed to a lifetime with a man more dangerous than my daughter could ever imagine. But she doesn't know my secret. I must do this to keep her safe.
I could not read this fast-paced, well-written story with well-developed and complex characters fast enough. I was hooked after reading the prologue. I loved the plot twists and how this storyended.

My Review: Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars) Wow, Willow Rose has done it again! I am a massive fan of psychological thrillers, and this one absolutely delivered. From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. What I loved most about this book was the dual perspective. Getting the story from both the mother and the daughter, Kaylie, added so much tension to the plot. Kaylie is watching her mum marry this seemingly perfect "knight in shining armour," Nate, but she is riddled with suspicion—and for good reason! Then you have the mum’s perspective, dropped into a marriage with a man who has a seriously dark, criminal past, all because of a secret she's keeping to protect her daughter. The dynamic between the two women kept me guessing the entire time. It’s packed with secrets, uneasy family dynamics, and a looming sense of danger that kept my heart racing. If you love a fast-paced thriller that keeps you hooked from the wedding dress to the final page, you need to pick this one up. A solid 5 stars from me!
Her Second Husband was an entertaining, fast-paced domestic thriller that kept me turning the pages, even if it didn’t completely hold together by the end.
The story alternates between a mother and daughter perspective and delivers plenty of suspense, secrets, and twists along the way. While the final reveal did catch me by surprise, the book relies heavily on red herrings, and some plot threads felt underdeveloped or unresolved. In particular, certain details that seemed important early on ultimately led nowhere, leaving me with more questions than answers.
That said, the pacing is strong and the short chapters make it an easy, bingeable read. I never felt bored and always wanted to know what would happen next. Fans of quick domestic thrillers will likely enjoy the ride.
For me, this was one of those books that was perfectly readable and entertaining in the moment but didn’t leave a lasting impression afterward. If you’re looking for a fast thriller to fly through over a weekend, this may be a good fit.
Like all Willow Rose books, this one sucks the reader in within moments and keeps their attention until the end. A girl is walking home from swim practice when she is abducted.
The next scene is a wedding where Emily, the mother of a teen, Kailey, is marrying Nate. As the story continues, we find out that Kailey isn't at all happy about the marriage. She and her mother were always close. This marriage was too soon, as far Kailey could see. And when she starts to look into the groom's history, he seems very shaky and the more she learns, the more suspicious and upset she becomes.
We learn about his past history; a felon, a violent temper, two members of his immediate family dead. The book propels the reader through to the exciting end.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's a free standing story, unlike many of Willow Rose books, which are usually part of a series.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for an early version of the e-book.
Emily gets married to a man she’s only known for eight months, but her daughter is immediately suspicious. As she starts digging into her new stepfather’s past, secrets begin to unravel and it quickly becomes clear that everyone is hiding something. With so many lies and twists, it’s impossible to know who to trust! 😂
I really enjoyed this book and found myself flying through the pages once I got into it. The short chapters made it incredibly easy to keep saying “just one more chapter,” which definitely helped keep me hooked. For a large part of the story, I was suspicious of almost every character, which made it a fun and addictive read. While I did manage to guess the main twist towards the end, there were plenty of smaller twists and revelations throughout that genuinely caught me off guard. Overall, it was an entertaining thriller packed with secrets, suspicion, and enough surprises to keep me turning the pages.
Fast-paced, tense and twisty, I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough!
Kaylie is suspicious of her mother’s new husband, Nate, not least because there is a police detective present at their wedding, observing quietly. Once she starts investigating and realises the danger she and her mother are in, Kayleigh is like a dog with a bone, refusing to leave any stone unturned.
The characters are so well written, I really felt I knew and related to Kaylie and Emily, and Nate shows every emotion, good and bad, in his eyes that drew me in so much that I fell a little bit in love with him myself, just as Emily has, despite knowing his past.
The plot is fantastic! Kaylie discovers that she can't trust anyone to tell her the truth, even those closest to her. When the twists land, they hit hard; nothing is what I expected and I loved it!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Willow Rose and Bookouture, for an ARC of this book.
WOW!!! I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put it down. With so many twists and turns and edge of your seat moments you couldn't stop turning pages. Emily had been divorced from her husband for a while so when she met Nate Sullivan, a man who showered her with attention and doted on her. But after only 8 months she married him. But her college daughter, Kaylie was very wary of him and felt there was something very wrong about him and decided to check him out. What secrets is her mother holding back? And how dangerous is her new husband? What has Kaylie scared for her mother, what did her digging into Nate find? This is a really well written psychological thriller that keeps you so engaged you just can't stop reading! Willow Rose is an amazing thriller author and each of her works are always unputdownable! I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my early copy in exchange to my honest review.
Following the two POVs of Kaylie and her mother Emily, you quickly enter a fast pace psychological thriller that grips you from Chapter One.
Kaylie is witnessing her mother marrying Nate after only 8 months together. She believes her mum is moving too fast and that something is not right about her new husband, Nate. Is it her protective instinct or jealousy over having to share her only family member?
Although, I loved the short chapters and the entertaining story, I did not enjoy the writting style and found some chapters fell flat and some storylines felt forced. I also suspected the twist half way through the book.
Overall, this was a pleasant read and would recommend it to the fans of Freida McFadden.
“Her Second Husband” by Willow Rose is a twisty 4-star psychological thriller! Emily is head over heels in love with Nate and is getting married after just eight months. Kaylie, Emily’s daughter, is alarmed by how quickly the relationship has moved and can’t shake the feeling that something isn't quite right.
Told from the perspectives of both Emily and Kaylie, the story keeps readers questioning everyone's motives. I found Kaylie to be a reasonable and relatable character who was easy to root for, while Emily was a bit too dramatic for my taste. With secrets lurking around every corner and plenty of twists along the way, this was a suspenseful read that kept me guessing.
Thanks to Bookouture, Willow Rose, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
I was on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing until the end. This one is about secrets. A mother's secrets. Who she really is and who she was, and her daughter’s secret investigation into her new stepfather that she suspects is keeping secrets which she fears could endanger her mother. Fast-paced with twists and turns in the plot that left me gasping and staying up way too late to finish this impossible to put down thriller. The characters are all compelling, each in his or her own way, with well written, straightforward motives be they good, downright sinister, or somewhere in between. I loved this book and will recommend it to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by the author.
Her Second Husband is a dark and twisty psychological thriller that felt like riding a roller-coaster. So many twists, turns and bumps that kept me intrigued all the way through.
Emily marries Nate rather quickly after meeting him much to her daughter Kaylie's chagrin. When Kaylie overhears some alarming information about Nate, she worries her mother jumped into the fire too quickly. Turns out Emily knows all about it but marries him anyway. That's because she too has a deep, dark secret she needs to protect at all costs.
This was a real page turner that had short, bingeable chapters. The secrets, lies and deception kept my emotions on high alert. I devoured every page greedily.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy
Since being introduced to this author a couple of years ago, I've been slowly adding their books to my tbr and read lists.
I'm still working on it, but have now read my fifth book and once again, I was completely hooked and yes, it's another 5* read for me.
The prologue grabs our attention instantly and then we follow the story from the point of Emily and Nate's wedding. I liked that these main characters were more on the mature side and that this wasn't the first wedding for Emily. Still a beautiful setting, but the dynamic is definitely different with older children and especially as we soonearn, that Kaylie has some reservations about Nate.
The story unfolds trough two contrasting pov's - Emily and her daughter Kaylie. Emily is obviously in love with Nate and he portrays the doting husband, charming all their guests - but Kaylie is determined to find out his secrets.
This is a tense read as more and more secrets are revealed on all sides and this had me really not trusting my judgment on any of the characters, which was ever changing.
I love the way this author manages to endear us to our main characters from the start, but then plays with our minds with shocking reveals and twists throughout.
This had me racing through the pages as I just had to know how things were going to end.
A great read and I'm already working out my next read ....
Although I did enjoy this book, I found myself frustrated multiple times. There were things that didn't track or make sense and some chapters ended seemingly out of nowhere. I had to flip the pages back a few times to check if I missed something. I found Emma's "secret past" to not be as dramatic as it was made out to be. The twist wasn't all that twisty either. I figured out what was happening pretty early. I liked Kaylie and her drive for the truth. I also really enjoyed the ending. Honestly, for me, Kaylie and the ending made the book. As always I do recommend this book to others as everyone likes different things.
Emily is so lonely, so when she meets Nate, she quickly falls for him hard. Emily’s daughter is suspicious of Nate so she decides to look into his life. Everyone seems to have secrets here. This book was not what I thought it would be in the best possible way! I truly didn’t know which was it was going and the ending was perfect! Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. #HerSecondHusband #WillowRoseBookTour #NetGalley #Bookouture #NewBook #ILoveBooks #BookLove #Bookstagram #SummerRead
ARC Review—Netgalley Star Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pub Date: June 8, 2026 Genre: Mystery/Psychological Thriller Format: Digital
This was a dramatic, fast paced read. We follow Emily who gets involved with a man who is mysterious as well as having a criminal past and we follow Kaylie, who’s Emily’s daughter and doesn’t accept Nate at all. Emily and Nate get married very quickly and there is tension through the whole book from beginning to end. Kaylie is highly suspicious of Nate and digs in on him as she has her own personal investigation. Lots of drama, tension and twists. I didn’t see the end happen the way it did with the person it was specifically. I enjoyed this read. 😊
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
Emily is newly married to Nate after a whirlwind romance. Her college student daughter , Kaylie, is suspicious. Nate’s been in jail. His daughter was murdered. As she investigates is she getting to close to the truth.
This was great. Both woman told the story taking chapters each. A slow build, led to a strong and exciting finale. The characters were written well and came across as genuine, with clear dialogue and thought processes. The conclusion was not obvious and was a surprise to me. This did take me a while to get into but I’m glad I persevered. Definitely read it.
Her Second Husband by Willow Rose is a stand alone published by Bookouture. Emily is about to marry Nate. Her daughter is grown, away at college and Nate has had a life too. But he's a man who keeps his past and its secrets lose to his chest. But this past shows up sooner than expected and puts everything upside down, brings danger to their doorstep. A fast paced, complex thriller that gives all the feels, is excellently written, let me conneect with the characters just fine. Recommend the book, 5 stars.
Title: Her Second Husband Author: Willow Rose Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Publication Date: June 8, 2026
Such a fabulous, suck-you-in Prologue! I thought the pace and excitement really picked up half way through the book. I had a list of 3 possible suspects, one of which was correct, but the culprit wasn't overly obvious.
Emily and Kaylie were very likable characters, so it was easy to want only good, positive things to happen to them.
This book was a quick, easy read that did not disappoint.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion/review.
OMG, what a fantastic book that you have written Willow! To say that this is a page turner is just not a very good statement! I picked this book up and I couldn’t put it down! I didn’t even want to stop to get something to eat. I love reading all of Willow’s books because they keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing! If you have never read her books you really must pick one up and get hooked like the rest of us! Just be sure to leave your review, because the author deserves that for giving us this awesome book! Thanks Willow for another fantastic book!
Rose is still a fairly new-to-me author and the books of her's that I have read so far have all been five star worthy.
Her Second Husband was no exception. Did you read that prologue? That sold it for me!
The plot unfolds through the eyes of Emily and daughter Kaylie. It was fast, tensions were taught, and the suspense on the lead up to the big reveal of those secrets was second to none.
Unreliable narrators and my own doubts had me questioning who exactly could I trust. That's half the fun though, right?
