Guido Knopp is a German journalist and author. He is well known in Germany, mainly because he has produced a great number of TV documentaries, predominantly about the Nazi era, but also about other topics, such as Stalinism.

Guido Knopp dokumentiert in diesem Sachhörbuch Gräueltaten des 2. Weltkriegs; in 4 Kapiteln, mit „Ghetto”, „Mordfabrik”, „Widerstand” und „Befreiung” betituliert, werden die Grausamkeiten des Holocausts geschildert. Durch eingeflochtene Beispiele von Einzelschicksalen und Zitaten von Zeitzeugen fühlt man sich dem Geschehen unheimlich nahe. So regt der Bericht stark zum Nachdenken und zur Auseinandersetzung mit diesem schwierigen Thema an.
Als sehr positiv empfand ich auch, dass der Autor selbst spricht. Das ganze Hörbuch war für mich sehr interessant, viele Fakten zum jüdischen Widerstand und zur Befreiung der Lager waren mir neu. Jedoch muss ich auch zugeben, kein großer Fan Guido Knopps zu sein. Ab und an glitt die Dokumentation meines Erachtens in sensationsjournalistische Tiefen ab, der Hörerin/dem Hörer wurden erzählerische Scheuklappen angelegt.

Holokaust jako výsledek modernity - chladný, neúprosný, průmyslově přesný - masová záhuba, jejímž zrcadlem jsou koncentrační a vyhlazovací tábory, především Osvětim. Holokaust je Osvětim, snaží se v knize říct autor. Přestože v době, kdy se Osvětim stala významným vyhlazovacím centrem, byla již většina židů po smrti, přestože většina židů zemřela blízko svého domu v jámách smrti - a to ve východní Evropě, přestože obvykle umírali kulkou do týla, což je spíše intimní než odosobněné. Přijmout Osvětim za symbol holokaustu znamená odlehčit si od nekomfortních myšlenek, změnit jeho podobu, zbavit vrahy zodpovědnosti, věřit, že se „o tom nevědělo“ (Podle autora prý devět z deseti Poláků nevědělo o tom, co se děje v Osvětimi.). Možná se nevědělo o masovém vraždění, které probíhalo v koncentrácích, s určitostí se ale vědělo o obětech jam smrti, o nichž domů psaly statisíce vojáků wehrmachtu a německé policie, a na jejíchž popravách se účastnili jako oni sami, tak další tisíce až statisíce pomahačů z řad kolaborantů nacisty obsazených a destabilizovaných států.
Kniha sice prohlubuje informace o fanatismu jednotlivců - pěšáků i nacistických špiček, jako celek ale slouží k pokřivenému chápáni minulosti.

Až přijedu domů, budu ti vyprávět spoustu krásných věcí. Ale už dost o tom, ještě by sis myslela, že jsem krvelačný.“

First review, simply to say that out of the many books I've read on this subject matter - I was seriously emotionally moved by this over any of the others.

I keep going back to one part, where it says this young man sent home to Germany asking for a reference to work as he'd really believed they were being sent away to do labour, before being shot that day. For some reason, that's affected me to my core and I don't think I'll ever forget that.

Read it, it's horrible and it's an account of the most disgusting period in recent human history but just read it, it's important.

Strange rating a book five stars when you seem to rate how good it is. I have had this book a while now and a very difficult book to read more than a few pages at a time, so horrifying what a human being can do to another human being. Six million died in the holocaust but many more were jews suffered and died long before the final solution was put into motion.
It is difficult to put into words the suffering that jewish families had to go through and it got worse and worse as the war went on. To understand the full horror and to read testimonies from both sides, a must read.
Incredibly moving but difficult read.

I'm choosing not to rate this book due to the subject matter, but please note , it is a well written book. What was most surprising is the holocaust victims' biggest fear - no, not the SS - it was the fear of being forgotten. I feel reading this book has has somehow honored their souls.
This is an extremely graphic novel and not a book for the gentle-hearted.

Difficult to read, but not because of any complexity. The subject matter is simply horrifying, but it is written in a way that anyone could digest, albeit slowly and painfully. I recommend this book to anyone willing to stomach the contents, because it should never be forgotten just how evil humans can be.
