Rate this book
Every illusion hides a truth. Every truth demands a price.

Runa, the Shadow Thief, breaks into the upper reaches of the mountain city of Aeralith to steal the Illusion Mask of the Air Trickster, a relic powerful enough to rewrite identity itself.
But the fae lord she sought to rob is waiting for her.

Vayriel Th’rae is the Air Trickster, master of riddles, illusions, and deceit. Instead of handing Runa over to the Council of Sages, he offers her a dangerous beat him at his own games before dawn, and she wins her freedom. Lose, and she belongs to him.

Each challenge pulls her deeper into his world of masks and misdirection, stripping away the lies she has used to survive. His touch unsettles her, his mind pierces her secrets, and the pain hidden behind his mask becomes harder to ignore.

Runa came to steal a new life. Vayriel has spent centuries hiding from his.

But in a city built on illusion, the most dangerous truth may be the desire neither of them can deny.

Shadow & the Air Trickster is a spicy romantasy novella filled with dangerous games, masked desire, thief-versus-trickster tension, and a fae lord who sees too much.

I enjoyed "The Shadow and the Air Trickster" so much that I wish it were a full-length novel. The world-building is so detailed that I could easily picture the environment and characters. My only question was how the characters determined they were each other's entire world and knew each other so deeply after such a brief interaction. Perhaps that's the magic of it? Either way, I enjoyed the story and will definitely be reading more from S. D. Huston.

Illusions and riddles

Another lovely short story, the third in the "Bound to the Elements" series set in the world of the "Brides of the Dragon Kings" and like the others I couldn't put this down. There is wonderful fun in this story, with a desire for freedom, illusions, trickery, trials, attraction and love. If you've read any of the other books set in this world you'll know the different wonderful types of fae (two types for each season) and their varying characteristics and powers, in this one we meet the air fae.

Runa has lived by theivery, originally to look after her mum and then for the challenge. But wanting to escape that life and become someone new she goes to steal the Illusion Mask of the Air Trickster only to find it not as easy as she'd expected with the fae lord expecting her.

Vayriel is a master trickster, using illusions, riddles and misdirection. Having caught her it's his right to keep her as his slave but he give her a chance of freedom, and the prize she was after.

"Beat me at my own games," he said voice lazy and lethal. "Three trials, three chances all before dawn. Lose any of them, and you're mine."
Her heart slammed once, hard. She had to win.

I loved the banter between these two as she meets his challenges of illusions and riddles, while realising that what she wants might not be what she thought and his challenges are making her see herself in a new light. It's also lovely how honest the trickster becomes with the shadow thief who wanted his most valued possession.

As with S.D. Huston's other books I have loved this one and would strongly recommend it, a lovely feel good short read that made me laugh out loud at points. She's created a fantastic world and I can't wait to see what she does next.

When you have nothing left to lose, a final dangerous theft seems like a good idea. Runa has lost all of her friends and family and wants a new life away from the world where she steals to survive. A final daring heist to steal the mask of the Air Trickster Vayriel, which can bend any reality and create any illusion, seems the only out. But she is not prepared for the trap laid with illusions, or the alluring Air fae behind the mask. Trapped in his lair her offers her a choice, beat him at three challenges , or become his possession to do with as he pleases. As the stakes mount ever higher and flirtation is turning the air steamy, neither side is willing to admit that what they both desire is each other. Can Runa open her heart to a man set on keeping her? Can Vayriel admit she is the only thing to bring him peace and stop being the illusion behind the mask? Sometimes you have to walk away to realize what you really were looking for, as two lonely tormented souls try to find their hearts desire.

This is another quick romantasy in S.D. Huston's Bound to the Elements series.

Runa is the Shadow Thief and she has come for her ultimate prize, the Illusion Mask. Why does she want it? Well, for that you have to read the story. Vayriel, the Air Trickster, catches her in the act and instead of prosecuting the theft or turning her over to the authorities, makes a bargain that if she can pass his three trials he will set her free.

This quick short novella pulls on some big themes as two characters have to decide to be vulnerable with one another, where vulnerability can bring connection or loneliness.

I loved how Runa solves the trials and how each trial reveals something about her.

This very short story, part of the Bound To The Elements series by S. D. Huston grabbed me right from the start. The intrigue, challenges, trickery, twists and turns, and the spice was absolutely spot on. It definitely held my attention. The characters were absolutely engaging and genuine and I loved how Runa grounded the air trickster. The world building was captivating and vivid.. And absolutely genius. S. D. Huston has a fantastic imagination for her worlds. I can't wait to read more of this series!

Vayriel and Runa stole my heart almost instantly. Their first meeting throws you right into the story, and I was hooked from the moment the offer was made. Every chapter had me reading faster because I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

I absolutely loved them together and honestly just wanted more of everything—their banter, their relationship, and the world around them. The story left me wishing I could stay with these characters for another few hundred pages.

If there's ever more of Vayriel and Runa, I'll be first in line because I'm already completely obsessed.

I didn’t think that a book/short story could draw me quite like this one. It kept me reading from the first the first chapter and on. Well worth the read and writing style is amazing. I love reading books and other stories where the main character doesn’t need anyone to save them but sometimes needs a nudge to forgive themselves and to make themselves stronger to realize what they really want.
Exceptional job and I cannot wait for more!

I enjoyed this short story, but it was too short. I wanted more! I hope the author will write more stories with these characters. They had chemistry from the very beginning. The characters were well developed for such a short story. There were some editing issues but nothing too major. For those who like spice, there was some at the end of the story. It was well written but didn't really add to the story.

This story was entertaining but quite short. I wished it was a bit longer with more connection and relationship development between Vayriel and Runa. It was a fun read though with vivid storytelling.

That was a fun and quick story. I like the games they played and all the riddles. It was very descriptive for being so short and that helped immerse you into the story.
