This book was good and it told you about the past of a black kid who was amazing at football he didn't get along with many kids when he was growing up and had a younger brother who he had to look after most of the time. When he grew up he got scouted by Tottenham Hotspurs Fc which he liked he played their for along time and most of his career. When he got older he went to war and fought like a man and protected his country from getting taken over. He died in the final battle of the war when Germany and Japan surrendered and he was remembered as a footballing legend through out his football career and a brave hero during his War career.
Have you ever watched the movie ‘Forrest Gump’? The movie is about a person who lived a spectacular life. If you liked that movie, you might like this book ‘Respect: The Walter Tull story’ written by Michaela Morgan, published in 2020. It is a biography of Walter Tull. He was a black professional soccer player and black officer in the British Army. You can see Walter’s entire life. Walter's childhood wasn’t that good. Walter’s mother died two weeks before Walter’s seventh birthday and Walter’s father who was the first free man in his family died when Walter was nine years old. After Walter’s father died, the family split up and Walter and his brother Edward were sent to Children’s Home. Two were special, they were the only black kids. Sometimes they get bolly by other big kids. Then, in 1900, Edward was adopted by a family and Walter was left on his own at the Children’s Home. After separating with Edward, Walter hangs out with other kids on the street. In that time period, things were different. They were often very cold and nearly hungry. Also, they didn’t have any technology like TV or mobile phones. They did things differently these days. But, they did like playing soccer. They played in the street and made their own Children’s Home team. Walter was a star player and also a leader every time. He was really good and he got a scout for amateur team ‘Clapton FC’. The team was amteur but they were good. They won every time and from that Walter had become famous. Then, he was scouted from professional team Tottenham Hotspur ‘The Spurs’. He was the first black professional soccer player. Does it sound wonderful? Some parts were yes, but some parts weren't. He was brilliant. But, some people didn’t like him because he was black. People made up rude songs about him, spat at him, and made fun of him. It was a nightmare. But, he overcame it thanks to his teammate who encouraged him and supported him. He transferred to Northampton and Rangers. Edward and Walter met together and lived nearby. It was really good but then 1914, war broke out. He signed up to fight for his country. The War was awful. He lived in trenches, it was cold and wet. Every day, the men kill each other. Many people died, but Wlater survived. He survived a nightmare of blood and mud, guns crashing, men screaming, friends dying. After that, he became the first black officer in the british army. At the end of the war, Walter got shot and couldn’t survive. He died and became a war hero and got some medals. This book has some stories about racism. It shows us living as a collared people in around 1900. It reminds me about racism and I felt really bad about this because I’m one of the collared people and we still live in a world where racism exists. I haven’t experienced racism yet but before I came here, it was a really bad time because of Covid Virus. There were a lot of Asian Hate crimes (racism), so I worried about racism. It is a good book to read. It shows some parts of around 1900, the bad of racism and the bad of war. But, it didn't interest me while I was reading this. It was boring and too childish for a teenager to read. If under 10 years old read this, it can help them to realize the bad of racism and can learn things and have a more grateful dream after reading this book. But, teenagers who have already decided their dreams, values and more interest in Fiction or other things rather than other peoples life, this book might be boring to read. So, I recommend this book to parents to show their children under 10 years old rather than teenagers.
This is a true story of someone I had never heard of. It's one of the Barrington Stoke series of 'super-readable' books and is a brief re-telling of an incredible life. People like Walter Tull should be known about and I would recommend this for children and adults alike.
An interesting biography that tells the story of Walter Tull. A black footballer who fought in World War I. It has a mature look to the book for older readers, but is very accessible for all types of readers. It is a great way to share his story and one that I didn't know.
I had never heard of Walter Tull before reading this book. I think this should be taught in schools because it's wrong that so many people haven't heard of him. What a hero!
I have just read the book Respect and I thought it was a really good book. the only reason I didn't like it was because some of the people in the book are extremely racist, this book is a good book because it tells you about the past and how people reacted to black people when they step onto a football pitch.
