DEEP SIX is the best yet in Debbi Mack’s Sam McRae series. The plot is sophisticated and even twistier than those of the previous novels. The characters are quite credible, especially, of course, the heroine Sam McRae, and although the characters are well drawn in her other novels, I think Mack has gotten even better at making them live. Add the good writing and vivid language, and the novel’s a winner. I recommend this to mystery buffs everywhere. And at a current price of 99 cents for the Kindle edition, you can’t go too far wrong.

This is the fourth book in the Sam McRae Mystery series and has Sam struggling to manage with a dire cash flow problem, caused by a lack of work and funds. She is a Maryland lawyer and has her own small office. She takes on a job she wouldn’t normally do, to help settle a land zoning dispute for her old college friend Linda Parker. Shortly after she starts the investigation, Linda is murdered. Matters have just jumped from an easy side-line case, straight into the frying pan. It seems some people are after a quick decision on a controversial plot, wanting to build a large development in wetlands. Somehow this organisation got a fast tracked approval to start building and the local residents are up in arms and have formed a protest group, which Linda was advising before her demise.

The group of protesters is split and undecided amongst themselves and the murder of Linda just makes matters worse. More people start dying and she has to figure out who she can actually trust. There is a tangled web of lies, corruption on a city level of political influence and lots of double-dealing. Who is behind everything and desperate to get the protesters away from the site will eventually be figured out by Sam we hope. How such a simple request to work on the protesters zoning request could turn out so deadly is hard to fathom, but it does, which adds to the enjoyment reading the book.

Certain local council and government people are mired in the muck, hidden behind the scenes and from untraceable bank accounts, showing who actually owns the piece of land in question. Some of the protesters group have left, after threats were made to some and damage done to members cars. Others are hiding their allegiance on the group, with possible links to those that own the land and local politicians! Sam certainly has quite a muddle to sort out. After her friends sudden death, whether she is still employed by the residents group, is under question, as Avril is not exactly keeping in touch or being very civil. She has political aspirations of her own apparently.

To keep her small business afloat she has to call in favours from her private investigator friend to check backgrounds on the people she is working with and against and even the receptionist of her landlord, who helps pay her rent to keep her going! A sad part where you realise that missing opportunities to visit or to see friends and long lost colleagues can so easily be missed and then it could be too late as is the case for Sam and Linda. An environmental conundrum as some seek to hide matters and delay as long as possible to cover things up. A well written mystery and unusual to have a lawyer as the main character in this genre, but it works! I can’t wait for the next Sam McRae mystery to come out. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Debbie Mack has really stepped up her game with the latest in the Sam McRae series, Deep Six. The plot follows an intriguing storyline dealing with corrupt politicians, land developers and the minions vying for their share of the pot of gold. That is, land that is purported to be clean and ready for a vast complex development. Murder & mayhem ensue as Sam steps out to help an old college friend unveil the corrupt practices tied to this massive land development project. Ms. Mack does an excellent job of emphasizing the behind the scenes wangling that goes on within seemingly benign city government offices and the shady deals made therein. The character of Sam McRae develops ever more strongly and courageously as she seeks to obtain justice for those being taken advantage of and uncovering the unsavory depths of those supposedly serving the public. Turning out those wealthier reprobates who use the "system" for their own self-serving purposes strikes a chord with the problem associated with a lot of politicians at varying levels of government throughout our country today.
A great read that really holds the reader's interest and a great ending to a terrific series!!!

Debbi Mack has a winner with Deep Six. Sam McRae is in need of cash, so she takes a case she really doesn't like. The big retainer helped her console her mind in taking the case until her friend Linda is found murdered. Now it's personal and things are getting really deep. Lies, deceit, Sam isn't sure whom to trust or IF she can trust anyone. The question is, can she survive? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Another Sam McRae thriller. Sam gets a call from an old friend, Linda, who wants here to represent her home owners group in a zoning appeal. Sam begins to investigate and finds out Linda is dead. A group wants to build over a wet zone. This group got a fast track approval to build. The more Sam investigates, the more she finds wrong doing. Other people in the case against this group are getting threats. There is something they want to keep hidden. This is a page turner thriller.
