Darkness is all consuming.
It swallows you whole from the inside out. Blanketing you like a shield of impenetrable danger. It makes you unstoppable. Invincible. At least in your own mind.
Maybe that’s why I couldn’t see the damage I was causing.
Looking back, I see the signs. The beginning of where it all fell apart. If I’d paid more attention maybe things would have ended differently. Maybe I wouldn’t be lying here in a pool of my own blood. Maybe she wouldn’t be lying lifelessly next to me.
My anchor.
Broken and damaged beyond repair. Her penance for trying to save me.
“If only you’d listened,” The thick accent teases at my consciousness. “Maybe it would not have come to this, Mr. Quinn.”
I felt his body shift, felt the warmth of his breath fan over my ear, felt the cool tip of the blade against my throat.
“You shouldn’t have crossed me.”
