When two former classmates are reunited in the workplace, sparks fly in spite of their so-called social differences. A BL love story about overcoming self-doubt and embracing self-worth!
Office worker Mochizuki leads an average, ordinary life in the countryside—and that's just the way he likes it. Besides the mundanities of his daily routine, not much out of the ordinary happens to Mochizuki... until the day his former classmate—the man who turned his world upside down—shows up at his workplace.
Natsuki Hyuga has been infatuated with Mochizuki ever since they were in school together, but Mochizuki always avoided his advances... until now. Now that they've been reunited, Hyuga is determined to finally take their relationship from colleagues to lovers, but Mochizuki can't imagine why someone so extraordinary would want to be with someone so... ordinary. - Content Warnings: Explicit sexual content, dubious consent.
There was really nothing to it. Art is also censored too. Possibly if this was fleshed out a bit more, and maybe if the top was a bit more stalker-ish then that would be great.
I need to take a look at my preorders list and cancel more one shots from Tokyopop, because they have a serious track record of licensing the worst stories. I'm particularly annoyed about this one because it'd looked interesting! Good cover art, with an intriguing summary.
I should've checked the content warnings more carefully, because this is literally just a story about a stalker who spends the entire book assaulting the guy he's been obsessed with for a decade - a straight guy who'd moved to the countryside partly to get away from him.
Not that there's enough backstory to really flesh any of that out. All we get is Mochizuki sweating with anxiety when Hyuga suddenly shows up at his workplace, and fretting a bunch about how he'd thought/hoped he would never see him again.
Hyuga starts groping Mochizuki during his welcome dinner, then pretends to be drunk so Mochizuki will take him home, then assaults him in the shower. (Mochizuki choosing to stay the night there was also pretty stupid - that's not victim-blaming, that's just bad storytelling.)
There's a slight attempt to show them bonding over doing well at work together, with Mochizuki appreciating how serious Hyuga is about his job, and how they balance each other well in presentations. Mochizuki is great at behind the scenes work, and Hyuga is a good public speaker.
Other than that, they literally have no conversations and no chemistry. Just the typical, very old school BL "no means yes" narrative, with a random evil woman thrown in just to show that Mochizuki would choose his male stalker over his female options.
This was genuinely one of the worst I've read in a while, which was a real downer. And the art isn't even good...I actually flipped to the back to see if the cover art was drawn by someone else! They hardly look like the same characters.
This is going straight to the "I will never read this again" part of my bookshelf. The main character's stalker of the past ten years transfers to work with him, then repeatedly sexually assaults him. When the main character eventually gives in, it's framed as romantic rather than horrifying. Romance is dead.
I'm not someone who needs his manga to be politically correct and unproblematic in order to enjoy it, but genuinely nothing about this story is appealing. The "romance" is just awful, but it doesn't tip over into erotic thriller either because the author doesn't seem aware of how terrifying this shit would be in real life. The story outside of the "romance" is nonexistent, we get absolutely no character arc or anything. The cover art is gorgeous, but the actual art in the manga is passable at best. Yaoi as a genre is pretty well-known to have issues with how consent is portrayed, but this is genuinely one of the worst examples I've come across, especially compared to how tame the cover and blurb is. Don't read this.
This was disappointing. I was looking forward to this one based on the description but was thoroughly let down. I did not check the content warnings on this one and I wish I had. Take the dubious consent warning seriously, although I'd argue there's nothing dubious about it, just straight up assault. The story is quite short, and that's because it skips over most of the backstory and plot development in favor of unwanted smut where the MC clearly wants nothing to do with the stalker "love interest". I ended up flipping through this one, looking for any bit of plot development or backstory that just wasn't there. I wasn't even rooting for a relationship to happen, just gross. 0/10 avoid it
Ugh this really is kind of boring. There is what I would consider non/dub con multiple times but he likes so you know LOVE. The premise of someone not feeling worthy of the popular guy never really happened. We don't even know why he went to the countryside but it was implied to get away from popular guy soooo I don't get it cause there is no growth to make me understand why they would get together.
Man 1: stupid. Man 2: a creep. There was no story beyond vague "office things", and I thought maybe the creepy stalker/predator vibes would only last for the first encounter but I was wrong. Tokyopop really let me down with this one (also the cover is so misleading). I'll give it a bonus half star because at least the creep's face was pretty? I'm grasping at straws here...
If you gonna write a stalker character, I need more than just following them to the next city. I want pictures, schedules, notes, isolation, and all the iconic stalker bits…. Not this half-assed mess.
